Exploring the Initial Period of Settlement Among Immigrant Women Experiencing Intersectional Barriers in Toronto Through a Photovoice Project

Kim, Minju January 2023 (has links)
Numerous women embark on migration journeys, driven by aspirations to secure enhanced opportunities for themselves and their families. However, they often encounter significant impediments due to intersecting systems of oppression related to gender, race, immigration status, and other social dimensions. This study aims to elucidate the experiences of immigrant women during their initial settlement period. Employing Community-Based Participatory Research and Arts-Based Research approaches, the research used the photovoice method, with collages and storytelling, to explore the experiences of twenty immigrant women. Grounded in an intersectional feminist framework, this thesis presents findings based on visual and narrative data gathered from a creative empowerment program at Newcomer Women Services Toronto. Three predominant themes emerged: (1) pre-migration expectations and post-migration realities, (2) welcome and reception of settlement support, and (3) barriers experienced during initial settlement. The study offers a detailed examination of a range of experiences, both positive and adversarial, that immigrant women navigate throughout their migration journey. The research implications include recognizing the holistic needs of newcomers and providing a comprehensive support system to foster a more inclusive and equitable experience. / Thesis / Master of Social Work (MSW)

Investigating Elementary School Teachers' Interactions Relating to Newcomer Emergent Bilingual Students

Cain, Amelia A. 12 August 2016 (has links)
ABSTRACT Five of the top 16 counties in the United States with the fastest growth in the Latino population from 2000 to 2007 are in Georgia (Pew Hispanic Research Center, 2015). The Georgia metropolitan area where the study occurred has more Latinos than Austin, Tampa, Fort Lauderdale, or Tucson (Pew Hispanic Research Center, 2015). Particularly following the New Latino Diaspora (Hamann, Wortham, & Murillo, 2002; Murillo, 2002; and Villenas, 2002) schools in the Southeastern United States have more and more Spanish-speaking students (Pew Hispanic Research Center, 2015). However, most classroom teachers have not received specialized training or professional development relating to these students (Ballantyne, Sanderman, & Levy, 2008; Barrera & Jiménez, 2000; Carrasquillo & Rodríguez, 2002; Dove & Honigsfeld, 2010; Echevarria, Short, & Powers, 2006; Kim, 2010; Walker, Shafer, & Iiams, 2004). My study’s purpose was to explore the interactions between an English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) teacher (myself) and classroom teachers in my school relating to newcomer emergent bilingual students. The main research question guiding this study was: What happens when an ESOL teacher and classroom teachers intentionally gather to focus on newcomer emergent bilingual students? Teachers attended 12 weekly gatherings which were audiotaped, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed. This study exemplifies practitioner research and thematic analysis of the data. Sociocultural theory (Vygotsky, 1978, 1986) and critical pedagogy (Freire, 1970) frame this study and were used as interpretive lenses for data analysis. Five major themes emerged: newcomers, resources, connections with classroom experiences, perceptions, and professional development. Findings related to teachers’ sense of self-efficacy relating to newcomers, their awareness of linguistic and cultural issues, and the importance of the social-emotional climate. A kit for classroom teachers of newcomers was prepared. Recommendations include support for classroom teachers who receive newcomer students—resources for the first days with a newcomer and ongoing interaction with other teachers for discussing strategies and reflecting on classroom experiences. Additional research is needed to increase awareness of the transition for classroom teachers and students when a newcomer arrives.

Introducera mera : En intervjustudie kring medarbetares upplevelse av en introduktionsprocess / Please let me onboard : An interview study about employees’ experiences of an onboarding process

Roos, Andreas, Norén, Magdalena January 2017 (has links)
The purpose with this bachelor thesis is to examine employees’ experiences of an onboarding process at a given organization. The study was conducted at a logistics company in southern Sweden with several hundred employees. The empirics was collected using semi structured interviews and the number of respondents were six. The empirical analysis was inspired by the phenomenological approach, with the intention of finding correspondence in the respondents' experiences. The results revealed both similarities and differences. Overall, all respondents were satisfied with their onboarding, although there was a large variation between which aspects were more positive versus negative. The varied experiences were a consequence of differences in the onboarding processes the respondents had undergone. This was in turn an effect of who had been responsible for each introduction, rather than a conscious choice for individual adaptation. Overall, the authors of the study conclude that the organization could advantageously standardize the onboarding process, this to ensure equal treatment between employees.

Exploring a shared history : Indian-White relations between Fishing Lake First Nation and Wadena, 1882-2002

Nicholat, Christa Leanne 03 July 2007
A great deal of literature exists that documents the nature and development of relations between Native and Newcomer groups in what is today the Eastern and Maritime regions of Canada. By comparison, however, studies which examine interaction between these two groups in Canada's prairie region are considerably lacking. Although a sufficient amount has been written about prairie Indian peoples and their experiences with government officials and policy, relatively little is known about relations between Indian reserve communities and neighbouring immigrant communities, particularly during the early years of settlement. A survey of existing sources suggests that during this time Indian people were simply settled on reserves and immigrant towns grew up around them, each, it seems, operating in complete isolation from the other.<p>This thesis aims to fill this gap in the historical literature by attempting to draw out the essence of the integrated and intertwined elements of the history shared by two prairie communities. The basic aim of this study is to trace the nature and development of relations between Fishing Lake First Nation and Wadena, located in the east central portion of Saskatchewan, from the 1880s to the present. Exploring a Shared History seeks to provide a more thorough understanding of and broader perspective on an important, yet much-neglected, facet of the region's history.

Introduktionen - en interaktiv process : En kvalitativ studie av en introduktionsprocess för nyanställda på ett fastighetsbolag

Jansson, Felix, Kvibäck, Pauline January 2013 (has links)
The aim of this essay is to examine the experiences of an introduction process of newcomers through an integrative perspective, by two guiding questions: How does the examined organization socialize newcomers? How is the organizational socialization experienced by the employees? Most Swedish corporations engage in some form of workplace introduction and this introduction should give the newcomer an understanding of his work and its relation to the organizations other business practices. Earlier studies have mostly focused on the effects of socialization tactics but few on the experience. This study, based on qualitative interviews with a regional manager, newcomers and established employees shows that the studied organization socializes its newcomers through many socialization tactics where the newcomers’ personality and previous knowledge allows to direct the socialization process. The introduction is perceived by the interviewed parties to happen most intensively at specific events; the first impression, the welcoming, while performing work and during the breaks. The newcomers and the established employees both perceived the social aspect as central to the introduction and the work execution secondary. It’s very important according to both parties that it creates a dialog about both work and private life for a successful introduction.

How to enhance newcomers' retention and performance? Exploring the moderating effects of mentoring and newcomers' personality on the relationships between newcomers' Person-Job fit/Person-Organization fit and task performance/turnover intentions

Huang, Shu-Chen 07 September 2012 (has links)
In order to enhance newcomers' retention and performance, the present study explored the moderating roles of mentoring and newcomers' personality (conscientiousness and emotional stability) on the relationships between newcomers' perceived person-job fit, (P-J fit) person-organization fit (P-O fit) and their task performance and turnover intentions. The data was collected from newcomers who have passed probation with their organizational tenure less than one year. In total, 198 usable questionnaires were collected from 20 firms in Taiwan. The present study applied the hierarchical regression analysis to test our hypotheses. The results showed that: (1) when mentoring relationship is low, the positive relationship between newcomer P-J fit and task performance is strengthened; (2) when conscientiousness and emotional stability are high, the negative relationship between newcomers P-O fit and turnover intentions is strengthened; (3) the interaction between newcomer P-J fit and P-O fit is positively related to task performance. Based on our findings, we proposed several practical implications as below: (1) organizations should pay attention to newcomers¡¦ P-J, P-O fit, and their socialization processes; (2) using selection tools to hire newcomers with high conscientiousness and emotional stability; (3) organizations should apply different socialization practice for newcomers with different attributes.

The Relationship between Organizational Socialization, Information Seeking Behavior, and Organizational Commitment of New High-tech Professionals

Huang, Ya-Yun 29 July 2000 (has links)
The Relationship between Organizational Socialization, Information Seeking Behavior, and Organizational Commitment of New High-tech Professionals Abstract Due to the rapid growth of high-tech industry in Taiwan, there is an increasing need for high-tech professionals. Therefore, it is easy for high-tech professionals to switch jobs frequently. This phenomenon causes high-tech companies to spend a lot of money and time on the management of newcomers every year, so it is important to understand how newcomers adjust to the new environment and increase their commitment to the organization. Organizational socialization is generally defined as the process whereby newcomers learn the behaviors and attitudes for assuming roles in an organization. Research on socialization has focused on the socialization tactics used by organizations and tends to portray newcomers as passive in the socialization process. However, relatively is known about how newcomers obtain the information they need. Hence, this study was designed to examine the relationship between organizational socialization, information seeking behavior and organizational commitment of high-tech professionals. Besides, this research also examined the mediating effects of socialization content on the relationship between organization socialization and organizational commitment and the relationship between information seeking behavior and organizational commitment. Surveys were given to 99 new professionals six and twelve months into their jobs. The results of the research indicate that: 1. High-tech companies tend to use institutionalized socialization tactics; new professionals tend to use overt, third party and observing tactics to obtain the information . 2. Collect, sequential, fixed and serial socialization tactics are associated with high socialization content; overt and observing information seeking tactics are associated with high socialization content. 3. Sequential fixed and serial socialization tactics are associated with high organizational commitment; observing information seeking tactic and high socialization content are associated with high organizational commitment. 4. The mediating effects of socialization content on the relationship between organization socialization and organizational commitment and the relationship between information seeking behavior and organizational commitment are not obvious. Key words: organizational socialization, information seeking behavior, socialization commitment, high-tech company, newcomer

Recent high school immigrants’ program placement and academic performance in Texas schools : what do we know and what do we need to know

Lee, Pei-Ling 06 July 2012 (has links)
The study explored the relationship between program placement policies regarding the education of recently immigrated students and selected outcomes for these newcomers in urban high schools located in Texas under the implementation of NCLB. In an effort to better understand the impact of such policies on immigrant learning opportunities, this research investigated how newcomers’ identification and promotion, which were based upon English language proficiency testing, affected recent immigrant students’ program placement, course completion and educational achievement. In addition, this study used secondary data analysis to examine how newcomers’ background characteristics were associated with their grade retention rates. Finally, the relationship between students’ background characteristics and newcomers’ academic performance in language arts and mathematics subject areas were examined. This research attempted to answer questions including: 1) How do newly arrived youth students enrolled in newcomer programs, schools, and those enrolled in traditional English as a Second Language (ESL) programs differ with regard to characteristics, such as race, gender, socioeconomic status (SES), course completion, grade retention, and language spoken at home?, 2) How do the differences in characteristics of newly arrived youth students relate to grade retention?, 3) What is the relationship between the growth in academic achievement and newly arrived youth students’ demographic characteristics while enrolled in different programs?, and 4) What kinds of learning opportunities and educational supports are provided by traditional ESL programs, newcomer programs, and newcomer schools for newly arrived youth students in northern and central Texas? Findings indicated newly arrived immigrant adolescents are consistently the most disadvantaged group due to their later start age with limited English proficiency facing a new culture. In general, recently arrived immigrant youths appear to benefit more from teachers with ESL certification as well as even much more experience for serving immigrant adolescents in a safe and caring environment, newcomer schools. / text
