Fagerberg, Emma, Larsson, Elsa January 2010 (has links)

The study, carried out by using interviews, also covers how these journalists' work is influenced by social media. For the journalists in the study social media has become a tool to do research, get news ideas and find interviewees. At the same time social media affects the work of the journalists, as the social media increases the speed of news and flow of information. Even though they involve some challenges, social media facilitates news work and the journalists in this study have a positive attitude towards the phenomenon. Keywords: Social media, news journalism, the national media.

Ferro Soriano, Jose Ignacio 22 October 2019 (has links)
This study focuses on the analysis of news published by El Comercio y La República, newspapers with nationwide circulation, which are related to Ollanta Humala Tasso’s bid for presidency during the previous week to the results of the second-round round-off elections in Peru in 2011. It also aims at showing, if under circumstances of political tension, as it is a second-round election, the equilibrium in news journalism and its elements are affected by context. For this purpose, it explains the close relationship between journalism and politics. Then, it deals with the fundamentals of journalism in order to define the nature, nuances, and language of news journalism. Based on the abovementioned, the concept of Equilibrium in News Journalism is developed, which is supported by a series of elements and referents. Similarly, the political context at that time is considered as a reference. From this, the results of this study show that the concept of news journalism, which is supposedly to be the foundation of both local newspapers involved in this study, loses certain references due to the presence of a series of elements and tensions from the contexts where there exists a political polarization. / Tesis

Insight Cuba : A Reflection Rapport and Three Features Connected to Cuban Economy

Wahlström, Sara Charlotte January 2019 (has links)
Cuba! The name alone connotes many things for people be it rum & cigarrs, old Chevys & colonial buildings, Hemingway & Daquires, Castro & communism, Salsa & Reaggaton, parties & calm life, blue oceans & white sandy beaches, poverty & oppression.  As a tourist destination Cuba is sold as a country caught up in a time capsule. Visit before it is too late, before it forever changes (Culturetrip 2017).   When we read or hear about Cuba in the news its usually when extraordinary events are being covered such as President Obamas visit in 2016, the death and funeral of Fidel Castro in the same year or after hurricane Irma hit the island in 2017.  The image we get, on our side of the world, is often fragmented and without an understanding of the context.  This study consists of three reports connected to the Cuban economy. They have been written in an attempt to creat a different type of journalism - slow news journalism.  Instead of using journalism as a way to extract specific information during a specific event the aim has been to extract conceptions of the lived world by using qualitative methods like participant observation and spending time with Cubans in their own society for a longer period of time. The information has unfolded with and through time during fieldwork in Cuba, rather than having been created from a set of already determined priories before leaving Sweden.  The aim has been to find out what Cuban people (in Cuba) think is important in their daily life. What matters to them? What problems are they facing everyday and how do they cope with some of the daily challenges presented to them?  Are Cubans living their lives cut off from the rest of the world?  One of the most discussed or talked about issues in society was connected and related to the economy, which is why the reports focus on this subject. The reports take an economic insight from different perspectives in an attempt to show that the economy effect people differently depending on where they are situatedgeographically, economically, spatial, and societal in cuban society. / Skänkta cyklar får nytt liv på Kuba- Tells the story of a Norweigan aid project in the cuban province Artemisa. What does a bike mean for a family in Cuba? Can everone afford and get one? What do bikes have to do with the cuban economy? Ekonomin, en av de största utmaningarna på Kuba-  Tells the story of the informal and formal market in Cuba. Why are so many Cubans traveling abroad for business? How does the Cuban economy effect people’s daily lives and how do they face the challenges presented to them? Utbredd sexturism på Kuba- Tells the story of sex tourism on the island with the help of interviews with sex byers, jineteiras and procurers. What does the relationship between foreigners (Yumas) and cubans look like?

Manufacturing audiences?: policy and practice in ABC radio news 1983-1993

Dunn, Anne, n/a January 2005 (has links)
This thesis sheds light on the ways in which audiences are made through the relationships between organisational policy and news production practice. It explores the relationships between news practitioners perceptions and definitions of audiences, production, and organisational policies, using the radio news service of the Australian national public broadcaster, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC). In so doing, the thesis demonstrates that production, in its institutional context, is a crucial site for the creation of audiences in the study of news journalism. In the process, it illuminates the role of public service broadcasting, in a world of digital media The conceptual framework utilises a new approach to framing analysis. Framing has been used to examine the news "agenda" and to identify the salient aspects of news events. This thesis demonstrates ways in which framing can be used to research important processes in news production at different levels, from policy level to that of professional culture, and generate insights to the relationship between them. The accumulated evidence of the bulletin analysis - using structural and rhetorical frames of news - field observation and interviews, shows that a specific and coherent audience can be constructed as a result of newsroom work practices in combination with organisational policies. The thesis has increased knowledge and understanding both of how news workers create images of their audiences and what the institutional factors are that influence the manufacture of audiences as they appear in the text of news bulletins.

The Portrait of a Homeland : An Analysis of the Image of Sweden and Swedish Poverty in the Swedish American Post, Year 1887

Williams, Elin January 2022 (has links)
In the late 1800’s, Sweden was undergoing a population growth and had experienced several crop failures. With the majority of the population being farmers, the migration to North America gave Swedish emigrants an economic opportunity that wasn’t available in the homeland. This resulted in a mass exodus. During the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, around 1.25 million Swedes left their home country in search for a better life in the United States of America. In the year of 1890, around 478,000 Swedes had moved across the sea in search for better yields and economic prosperity. There is no exact number of how many Swedish-language newspapers that were published in North America to cater to the large number of Swedish immigrants, but an estimate says that between 600 and 1,000 Swedish language newspapers were published in the United States. The aim with this thesis is to analyze the representation of Sweden to Swedes who emigrated to look for a better life in the USA. The purpose of the study was to research how Swedish poverty was represented in the news. The research questions focus on how Sweden is represented in the Swedish American Post in 1887; how Swedish poverty is described and represented in the news and what representations of poverty can be seen in the material. The study was conducted through a qualitative text and thematic analysis of 48 newspapers from the Swedish emergency year of 1887, when the emigration hit its peak. The analysis of the data draws on theories of representation and social change, and the theoretical concepts of how the media can influence people’s lives and perceptions. The study found that the newspaper presents a somewhat simplified picture of poverty that rarely goes into underlying factors or societal structures but represents poverty mainly through personal stories of private individuals. The thesis also reveals that the image of Sweden is based on nostalgic, often fictional features of the homeland and news that often focused on accidents and deaths. This is interpreted as that the newspaper, on the one hand, gave the readers a relaxing read which spoke to their possible homesickness, and also contributed to confirm the decision to emigrate to the USA as something positive.
