Redes de comunicação pública, visibilidade e permanência do acontecimento público Tragédia Kiss (Santa Maria, Brasil, 2013) / Public communication networks, visibility and permanence of the kiss nightclub tragedy public event (Santa Maria, Brazil, 2013)

Kegler, Bruno January 2016 (has links)
This study has as central themes the public event notions and the public communication. The research problem is intended to analyze the communication networks configuration that make up the public event, formed from the actuation borderline issues between public and private interests. The hypothesis that guides this research is that the visibility and permanence of Kiss Nightclub Tragedy public event are supported by Networks of Public Communication, as they potentiate the debate on responsibility, judgment, legislation and State assistance to survivors and families of the victims from the tragedy. Between desired and unwanted visibilities, pacts and disputes are laid down in the nodal points where the subjectivities of the interlocutors are inserted. In this sense, the overall research objective is: to analyze the Public Communication Networks configuration on the Kiss Nightclub Tragedy. The specific objectives are: a) identify the main institutions and actors of the event from their own connection/ how they have been affected / accountable; b) identify the constituent visibility process of the public event Kiss Nightclub Tragedy; c) identify the dynamics of communication processes based around issues of public interest related to Kiss Nightclub Tragedy; d) identify structuring episodes of the event, of which derive from the issues triggered by the actors in network communication processes; e) define axes\ structural categories that allow the analysis of the public event configuration from the Public Communication Networks. The thesis is structured in three parts: first, the description of the research object is carried out with discrimination of the Kiss Nightclub Tragedy, the event chronology, the relationship with similar tragedies and legal proceedings in course. The second part, with the theoretical framework, is divided into three chapters. In the first, there are different meanings of public - in dichotomous opposition with the private -, aimed at delineating normatively the horizon tension between the terms, in the communication processes established between the actors. In the second chapter, there are the public sphere notions, visibility sphere and public discussion, public opinion, public - sociability; public communication and public communication networks. The last theoretical chapter is devoted to understanding the public event; and the impact of collective death. In the third part, there are the methodological references, formed by historical and descriptive research, based on genealogy, and documentary research technique, which resulted in the data collection that served the analysis; then the analysis of the functioning of the Kiss Nightclub Tragedy public event networks, from the visibility and permanence categories. The results point to the confirmation of the hypothesis, because they show the maintenance of the debate through the networks' activity, in traditional and alternative media.

Investigação do acidente da Boate Kiss em Santa Maria - Rio Grande do Sul - Brasil / Nightclub Kiss Accident Analysis in Santa Maria / RS: A case study focusing on the investigation of the accident as an opportunity to return the learned experience

Marcelo Loutfi 14 October 2015 (has links)
Introduction: The accident in Santa Maria / RS is one of the most publicized by the media having international repercussions. The criminal investigation conducted by the police and also by the technicians of the Regional Engineering Board, resulted in an understanding of immediate facts, i.e., the causes and effects which clearly established without seeking for the roots of the problem. In other words, here we seek to contextualize the accident within the cultural, political, regulatory and economic aspects. If we did not analyze the correlated aspects, the feedback, learning and risk management itself would be restricted to the accident proximal sphere. Questions about the use and sale of fireworks, the use of lining materials in clubs and nightclubs, the organization of events with large amounts of people indoors, are not detailed in the reports. It was also not broadly discussed questions about the role of governmental agencies in providing operating licenses for nightclubs, the role of risk prevention experts and the role of public officials in major disasters and major accidents, especially those related to chemical substances, that, in this case, killed two hundred forty two young people in a few minutes, all of whom died due to the action of the cyanide gas. Objectives: In face of these and other shortcomings, this paper proposes a method of coping with these issues. This proposal may be easily perceived as multidisciplinary since it would be difficult to develop a single disciplinary study without putting in jeopardy the opportunity of learning from the tragic accident. The focus is to find and present the contingent of influences that were at stake in the club management system. These findings may path the way for deeper studies of the social sphere and techniques which were present at that time and that were revealed by the tragedy. 11 Materials and Methods: In order to achieve this goal, we went far beyond the immediate relationship of cause and effect; we used a descriptive and analytical model of Vertical Maps, AcciMap proposed by the engineer Jeans Rasmussen with a qualitative approach. In this kind of study it is imperative to identify high political level influences, analyzing the events from top to bottom, and also going through state and municipal management data including the nightclub management itself. The data was collected from available media, from governmental agencies, particularly the civil police report and the Engineering Board report. Results: The vertical maps revealed the interaction and the systemic institution loss of control. The distribution of actors and influences that act in order to bring the system slowly but forcefully to the zone of instability is visible. The idealized conceptions, regulatory documents and public policies deviated due to uncontrolled interactions from security principles, without the system being able to detect these rapid changes. Institutions are pressed by a routine that on one hand leaves out risk management aspects and on the other hand by the inconsistency of coercive governmental supervision. Final thoughts: Even a single case study, due to the strength of the vertical maps, can expand the understanding of the social, organizational and political phenomena. By seeking relationships between actors and between events, the study encodes a unique structure which in theory is related to several cases. On the one hand the data obtained in the investigation itself, is not identical to other cases, on the other hand as we examine and analyze the documents important features for theoretical and methodological comparison emerge, thus increasing understanding of this and other accidents. Two other contributions are particularly relevant. The first one is the theoretical and academic contribution; it has as objective to debate the implementation of vertical maps in the study of accidents, especially the multifaceted ones with numerous actors. Another one is given by the display of numerous subsystems, which result from the vertical analysis, where each subsystem can be studied separately highlighting new ways of coping with major accidents.

By analyzing Jornal Nacional television reports, the use of melodramatic resources is investigated to initially understand the reasons of this union and based in which aspects it happened. After that, the intention is to problematize how Jornal Nacional information is built and how journalists tell their stories. The aim is to reflect on the consequences of this union, that highlights content over form (language), once any fact can become important and interesting when melodramatic resources are incorporated to the reports. In order to accomplish this study, Jornal Nacional press coverage of Kiss nightclub fire, that killed 242 people, mostly young university students, and hurt another 116 in Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul will be analyzed. After gathering this material a selection of reports that best represent this kind of coverage will be carried out. Reports will be analyzed based on classical film structure theory to identify melodramatic elements in journalistic narrative construction, built to seek audience through identification, sensations, shallow content and moralizing pedagogy. By that, the intention is to problematize journalism and to answer if what we have in television nowadays still is journalism, considering genre criteria, or if it got lost in suspense and repetition sensationalism.

Säkerhetsarbetet inom nattlivs- och evenemangsbranschen : Arbetssättet på strategisk nivå / The work safety procedures in the field of nightlife and social gatherings : Work procedures at a strategic level

Skröder, Emelie January 2017 (has links)
Background: Public gatherings in confined spaces such as bars, restaurants and events relates to crowds. From a safety focused perspective, environments with crowds carry with them a degree of risk. A work of safety is therefore an effort to recude accidents and injuries. The safety guidelines are initially regulated by laws which contains a mixture of technical systems and a risk management team. There is no step by step guide which details how to set up a safety procedure, rather agreed upon empirics and theories in the field which provides a broad and loosely defined set of terms which can be met. Scope: The aim of the study is to explore the work safety procedures in the field of nightlife and social gatherings. Specifically, this thesis explores the strategy and methods of implementing safety procedures and if they are based on theoretical assumptions. It also explores differences between the size of venues. Method: The study is done in a qualitative nature, using qualitative content analysis with an inductive design. The selection of locations have been strategically chosen from two towns in Sweden. The study contains six objects with an variation of maximum amount of guests and type of event. They are called "small venues" with a maximum of 1500 person and "large venues" with a capacity exceeding 1500 person. In the study small venues are nightclubs while the large venues include a nightclub with event, a venue with musical gathering and an arena. Results and conclusion: The study is represents a small selection of how the work safety procedures are organised in the field of the nightlife and entertainment industry. The safety guidelines of the small venues are made to meet the minimum standards set in place by the law. The safety procedures of these venues primarily rely on technical barriers. These organisations were observed to have very basic emergency procures and very little idea how to handle unknown incidents. The studies large venues have independent safety organizations several levels of independent risk management. These venues have extended their strategies to handle unknown incidents, because they can act independently or interact with technical support. The two smaller of the larger venues, do not have the same established safety strategies in place as the biggest one. They all have a strategy to control crowd movements in case of emergency. The other venue take one more step, and features strategies to handle the movement of the crowd during the event routinely. The biggest venue’s strategies are extrapolated from a basis of one theoretical assumption, a safety management model. Throughout the brand lack of understanding relate to the design of the actual place. There is also a perceived knowledge gap between the buildings design and the management of the venue. There is little effort to manage the behaviour in these venues, especially the small venues observed in the study. According to empirics and theories the venues in the study need to develop strategies to create multiple safety systems (barriers) to handle unknown incidents.

Assessing Excessive Noise Exposure of Music-Oriented Nightclub Employees

Fitzgerald, Aiyanna 25 June 2016 (has links)
Much research has gone into noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) and the effects of high intensity noise levels on the hearing mechanism of individuals. A study by the National Institutes of Health has established that high intensity sounds can cause hearing damage of either a temporary, or worse, a permanent nature; regardless of the age of the person. While sound levels below 75 decibels are considered comparatively harmless and have been found not to cause any kind of permanent hearing loss; sound levels greater than 85 decibels and regular exposure of approximately 8 hours per day, on an average, has been found to cause permanent loss of hearing (Bulla, 2003). The purpose of this research study was to assess excessive noise exposure of music-oriented nightclub employees, with music playing. Two employees were used as candidates for the purpose of this study, which was conducted on three days during a work week. Data on personal noise exposure was collected using personal noise dosimeters on a server and a promoter. For purposes of the study, a sound level meter was used to collect the noise levels in the working area, and prepare a sound map. The study was conducted in a nightclub in Tampa, Florida, with music playing. Data was collected on Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday. In total, the data was collected over six sampling nights. The data on noise levels was collected for both personal noise data levels and area noise levels during the period of study. In addition to the personal dosimeters, a sound level meter was also used for data collection. The results of this study indicate that noise levels were highest on nights with live entertainment. The days with performance of live entertainment were random and followed no particular order. The highest TWA noise exposure of 97.3 dB, for the server, occurred on Saturday, when a live entertainer performed in the establishment. The highest TWA noise exposure of 94.3 dB, for the promoter, occurred on Wednesday. Using the OSHA PEL and OSHA Hearing Conversation measurement methods, the server was exposed to excessive noise levels, greater than 85 dBA, on every night of the study (6 nights), while the promoter had three exposures that were greater than 90 dBA, using the OSHA PEL method, and exposures greater than 85 dBA on every night of the study, using the OSHA Hearing Conservation method. However, using the ACGIH measurement method, both the Server and the Promoter were exposed to excessive noise levels every night of the study (six nights).

The effects of alcohol access on the spatial and temporal distribution of crime

Fitterer, Jessica Laura 15 March 2017 (has links)
Increases in alcohol availability have caused crime rates to escalate across multiple regions around the world. As individuals consume alcohol they experience impaired judgment and a dose-response escalation in aggression that, for some, leads to criminal behaviour. By limiting alcohol availability it is possible to reduce crime; however, the literature remains mixed on the best practices for alcohol access restrictions. Variances in data quality and statistical methods have created an inconsistency in the reported effects of price, hour of sales, and alcohol outlet restrictions on crime. Most notably, the research findings are influenced by the different effects of alcohol establishments on crime. The objective of this PhD research was to develop novel quantitative approaches to establish the extent alcohol access (outlets) influences the frequency of crime (liquor, disorder, violent) at a fine level of spatial detail (x,y locations and block groups). Analyses were focused on British Columbia’s largest cities where policies are changing to allow greater alcohol access, but little is known about the crime-alcohol access relationship. Two reviews were conducted to summarize and contrast the effects of alcohol access restrictions (price, hours of sales, alcohol outlet density) on crime, and evaluate the state-of-the-art in statistical methods used to associate crime with alcohol availability. Results highlight key methodological limitations and fragmentation in alcohol policy effects on crime across multiple disciplines. Using a spatial data science approach, recommendations were made to increase spatial detail in modelling to limit the scale effects on crime-alcohol association. Providing guidelines for alcohol-associated crime reduction, kernel density space-time change detection methods were also applied to provide the first evaluation of active policing on alcohol-associated crime in the Granville St. entertainment district of Vancouver, British Columbia. Foot patrols were able to reduce the spatial density of crime, but hot spots of liquor and violent assaults remained within 60m proximity to bars (nightclubs). To estimate the association between alcohol establishment size, and type on disorder and violent crime reports in block groups across Victoria, British Columbia a Poisson Generalized Linear Model with spatial lag effects was applied. Estimates provided the factor increase (1.0009) expected in crime for every additional patron seat added to an establishment capacity, and indicated that establishments should be spaced greater than 300m a part to significantly reduce alcohol-associated crime. These results offer the first evaluation of seating capacity and establishment spacing on alcohol-associated crime for alcohol license decision making, and are pertinent at a time when alcohol policy reform is being prioritized by the British Columbia government. In summary, this dissertation contributes 1) cross-disciplinary policy and methodological reviews, 2) expands the application of spatial statistics to alcohol-attributable crime research, 3) advances knowledge on local scale of effects of different alcohol establishment types on crime, 4) and develops transferable models to estimate the effects of alcohol establishment seating capacity and proximity between establishments on the frequency of crime. / Graduate / 2018-02-27

Gonçalves, Camila dos Santos January 2017 (has links)
The theme of this thesis emerged from the discomfort caused by an intense experience: the volunteer work as a psychologist in the psychosocial actions offered after the fire at a nightclub in Santa Maria/RS/Brazil, on January 27, 2013. This fact mobilized psychologists from all over the country, who started an active role together with other organizations to plan and care for families, survivors, professionals and the population in general. This critical event triggered the dismantling of prevailing and dominant knowledge in the field of Psychology, which, historically, has contributed to the psychologization and pathologization of life by creating strategies and solutions for everyday experiences. We started from the recognition of the incompleteness of knowledge itself and the possibility of fallibility of instituted knowledge. Therefore, given the necessary creation of conditions to problematize our practices, we took the fire as a starting point for rethinking forms of emergence and visibility of certain ways of psychological practice. The general objective was to investigate which psychological knowledge and practices the critical event made emerge. The specific objectives were: to map the characteristics of the psychologists who worked as volunteers after the fire at the nightclub in Santa Maria; to check the processes of meanings attributed by psychologists to psychological knowledge and practices in the voluntary care and the representational process that generated these meanings; to identify the problematizations about psychological knowledge and practices pointed out by the psychologists concerning the generated demands, and their (in)visibilities in their performance in Psychology; to analyze the absences and emergencies that the professionals identified regarding psychological knowledge and practices; to reconstruct the memories of the collective work of these psychologists/volunteers from their narratives. The methodological itinerary used different resources of gathering information, and the corpus of investigation was composed of field diary, documentary research, individual interviews and a focus group After analyzing the information, we delimited three sets of analysis: plurality of knowledge: processuality and coexistence as constituents of the field of knowledge; paths of psychological thinking from a historical-critical perspective: the construction of the field of knowledge and ways of doing politics; and emergencies of the psychological field regarding the critical event: the construction of knowledge against the waste of experience. Therefore, when we consider the critical event as an analyzing device for psychological knowledge and practices, it was possible to raise aspects that we consider to be the absences of the field of knowledge, referring to training in Psychology, to techniques and to the relation of knowledge and practices with the city and the collectives. On the other hand, the emergencies raised by the professionals strengthen the sense of valorization of the present against the waste of experience, through local protagonism, the creation of singular practices and the affective collaborative networks in the collective construction of work.

Interaction: portraiture in a digital world

Yashcheshen, Shannon 12 September 2013 (has links)
The thesis and exhibition, Interaction: Portraiture in a Digital World, seeks to analyze digital portraiture today. I choose to depict concepts and ideas, as they relate to digital portraiture, through four distinct series of work, which encompass similar ideas and themes, but come at them from different perspectives. The work within the exhibition is comprised of several portraits of personal friends, family, and acquaintances, which have all been appropriated from online sources such as Facebook, and online dating sites. Because the portraits consist of people that I know on a personal level, are a collection of portraits that are derived from my personal social media profile, and represent individuals with whom I have frequently interacted with online, one could assess that in addition to being a collection of unique individual portraits, the exhibition is also a self-portrait of me, the artist. The exhibition includes Facebook Text Portraits, Nightclub Portraits, Online Dating HTML Portraits, and a Crying Girl Portrait, all of which strive to blur the lines between art and digital design, while addressing the function and meaning of digital portraiture today.
