How actively managed are Swedish mutual funds and which fund characteristics affects itsactivity rate?

Fagerman, Juni, Hallborg, Adam January 2016 (has links)
Background: The existence of closet index funds has been shown highly correlated to regulations andcompetition of explicit index funds on a market (Cremers et al. 2013). Despite its strong regulations andpresence of explicit index funds, studies have shown that Sweden has a high amount of closet indexfunds. This fact has led to our interest in examining the presence of closet index funds on the Swedish market, and to try to identify and analyze potential characteristics of a fund that affect its choice ofactivity rate. Aim: The aim of the study is, by reason of the proven high presence of closet index funds on the Swedish market, to examine the activity rate within the funds, and to identify and analyze potential characteristics that affects it. Completion: The study is conducted through quantitative research. The activity rate of the fund marketis measured through active share and then analyzed for how different characteristics influence the funds activity rate. Eventually the results of the study are being analyzed for if and how they are concatenated to the rules of the Swedish fund market. Conclusion: The result of the study shows that 52 % of the predicated actively managed funds were actually proven to be closet index funds. However, the result also shows that the degree of active share has generally risen, and that more funds are being actively managed in Sweden. The alignment of the fund, as well as if the fund is managed by a major bank, are proven to have a significant negative impactof the activity of the fund. This negative relationship is largely linked to the regulations as well as the size of the Swedish stock market, which creates incentives for low activity of the funds.

Contribution à la modélisation de produit actif communicant : spécification et évaluation d'un protocole de communication orienté sécurité des produits / Contribution to the modeling of active product : specification and Evaluation of a communication protocol oriented products security

Zouinkhi, Ahmed 07 April 2011 (has links)
Les résultats montrent l'intérêt et la faisabilité du concept de produit actif / Monitoring of chemical product storage is a delicate operation in the sense that it requires knowledge of the nature of each stored product, their location, their interaction and possible actions to be implemented in case of emergency. To facilitate the storage management, this thesis proposes to use the concept of ambient where the product has its own information system and wireless communication so as to make it intelligent and autonomous. This thesis proposes and develops a model of internal behavior of active product that allows a distributed approach of active security. This can lead to a communication protocol of application level to embed the active products. This protocol is formally assessed using hierarchical colored Petri nets. Finally, this protocol is implemented in the simulator Castalia/Omnet++ to analyze it in several scenarios and also for the experience when going to scale. The results show the usefulness and feasibility of the concept of active product

Novel methods of utilization, elimination, and description of the distortion power in electrical circuits

Al-Bayaty, Hussein Kamal Anwer January 2018 (has links)
Firstly, this thesis investigates the electrical power harmonics in an attempt to utilize harmonic current and its distortion power in a novel idea to reconvert the distortion power into useful power. This is done, in order to feed different DC or AC loads in single and three-phase power system by using passive or active filters and accordingly, develop a new topology of hybrid active power filter (HAPF). In addition, this circuit can be considered as a power factor corrector (PFC) because it reduces the total harmonic distortion (THD) and improves the power factor (PF). Secondly, this thesis works on a new design of active power factor correction (APFC) circuit presenting two circuits with the same design principle: the first design consists of two active switches without an external complex control circuit, while the second design contains a single active switch with an additional control circuit. The main contribution of this circuit is 98% reduction of the inductor's value used in the newly proposed PFC circuit in comparison with the conventional boost converter which may lead to a huge reduction in size, weight and the cost of the new PFC circuit. Also, the active switches depend on a carefully designed switching pattern that results in an elimination of the third order harmonic from the input source current which decreases the value of total current harmonic distortion (THDI) to (14%) and improves the input PF to (0.99). Consequently, the simplicity of the design without requiring a complex control circuit and without a snubber circuit plus the minimum size of inductor, gives the newly proposed circuit the superiority on other PFC circuits. Thirdly, this research aims to describe the distortion power through submitting two novel power terms called effective active power (Pef ) & reactive power (Qef ) terms with a new power diagram called Right-Angled Power Triangle (RAPT) Diagram. In addition, a novel de nition of total apparent power (St) has been submitted in order to illustrate the physical meaning of (St) in non-sinusoidal systems. The new RAPT Diagram is based on the orthogonality law and depends on geometrical summation to describe the relationship between different aspects (apparent-active-reactive) of power, and different components (total-fundamental distortion), drawing a bridge to connect the time domain with the frequency domain in a two-dimensional diagram.

Influence of the coupling between flow and bacteria on the fluid rheology and on bacterial transport / Influence du couplage écoulement/bactéries sur la rhéologie des fluides et sur le transport des bactéries

Lopez, Hector Matias 10 September 2015 (has links)
The question of transfer and spreading of living microorganisms, such as motile bacteria, is of interest in biology and ecology, but also in engineering and medicine. The way in which the background flow affects the behavior of these bacteria and how it impacts the bacterial transport through complex systems and on the macroscopic properties of the fluid remains unclear and little studied. In this thesis, I present an experimental investigation of the coupling between the local bacteria-driven motion and the fluid advection. In a first part, I investigate the rheological response of E. coli suspensions when subjected to weak flows (low shear rates). I show that, in particular conditions, the microscopic perturbations caused by the bacteria highly impact on the macroscopic viscosity of the suspension, leading to a striking viscosity decrease and eventually overcoming the dissipative effects due to viscous loss. I also identify the relevant time scales defining this viscosity decrease. In a second part, I perform experiments in a capillary channel and analyze the coupling for stronger flows (higher shear rates), at which bacteria were found not to impact on the macroscopic viscosity. Instead, by analyzing the bacterial trajectories under flow, I evidence a breakage of the symmetry of this trajectories which, characterized by a preferential migration, causes the localization of the bacteria in a layer that extends over a significant distance from the surface, and thus potentially influencing the bacterial transport in complex systems

Defretin, Joseph 23 November 2011 (has links)
This PhD thesis, conducted in cooperation with ONERA, focuses on active 3D object recognition by an autonomous visual agent. Whereas in passive recognition, acquisition modalities of observations are fixed and may generate ambiguities, active recognition exploits the possibility of controling these modalities online in a sequential inference process in order to remove these ambiguities. The aim of this work is to design, in a statistical learning framework, planning strategies in the acquisition of information while achieving a realistic implementation of active recognition. The first part of the work is dedicated to learning to plan. Two realistic constraints are taken into account : on the one hand, planning with imperfect object modeling may generate further ambiguities - on the other hand, the learning cost (in time, energy) is expensive and therefore limited. The second part of this work focuses on maximally exploiting observations acquired during recognition. The possibility of an active multi-scale recognition is investigated to allow an interpretation as soon as the sequential acquisition process begins. Observations are also used to robustly estimate the pose of the object to ensure consistency between the planned and actual modality of the visual agent.

Public participation in town planning : towards a pro-active participatory process / Barbara Raubenheimer

Raubenheimer, Barbara January 2014 (has links)
This dissertation sets out to describe a pro-active process of public participation in urban planning, motivated by a lack of planning theory and also available South African legislation to describe how pro-active public participation is achieved in planning practice. Communicative planning theory advises on and describes public participation as being meaningful focussing on consensus between stakeholders. Empirical evidence of such public participation is however scarce, and also a critique against communicative planning theory. South African legislation supports and uses the concept of pro-active public participation but has few practical guidelines to facilitate such a public participation process in planning. The context of public participation in South Africa, in specifically two communities (Khuma and Stilfontein) in the North-West Province was the primary focus in describing a pro-active process of public participation. These two communities that had participated in a previous project where public participation was conducted and most importantly documented were specifically chosen because they represent two different community contexts, with Stilfontein being a community primarily consisting of retired mineworkers and Khuma a community that came into being as a result of forceful removals during the apartheid era. Furthermore the process of public participation that was followed was unique in this project as methods from community psychology were applied to guide communication. The importance of context and communication were identified as the most important aspects when conducting public participation pro-actively. The importance of communication and context should be considered if a pro- active process of public participation is to be conducted. It is a timeous process to consider the context of community members when conducting public participation, but it must be considered by spatial planners. The possibility of multidisciplinary teams facilitating public participation processes in planning should be considered. In this way planners can be assisted when conducting public participation processes. The refinement of legislation describing public participation may also be helpful in attempts to enhance pro-active processes in public participation. / MArt et Scien (Urban and Regional Planning), North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2014
