Conception et analyse d’algorithmes d’approximation dans les réseaux de communication de nouvelle génération / Approximation algorithm design and analysis in next generation communication networks

Avec l’avènement de l’ère intellectuelle et de l’Internet of Everything (IoE), les besoins de la communication mondiale et des applications diverses ont explosé. Cette révolution exige que les futurs réseaux de communication soient plus efficaces, intellectuels, agiles et évolutifs. De nombreuses technologies réseau sont apparues pour répondre à la tendance des réseaux de communication de nouvelle génération tels que les réseaux optiques élastiques (EONs) et la virtualisation de réseau. De nombreux défis apparaissent avec les apparences de la nouvelle architecture et de la nouvelle technologie, telles que le routage et l’allocation de ressource spectrale (RSA) dans les EONs et l’intégration de réseaux virtuels (Virtual Network Embedding ou VNE) dans la virtualisation de réseau.Cette thèse traite la conception et l’analyse d’algorithmes d’approximation dans trois problèmes d’optimation du RSA et du VNE : les impacts de la distribution du trafic et de la topologie du réseau sur le routage tout optique, de l’allocation de ressource spectrale, et du VNE dans les topologies des chemins et cycles. Pour le routage tout optique, le premier sous-problème du RSA, il y a toujours un problème en suspens concernant l’impact de la distribution du trafic et de la topologie EON. Comme le routage tout optique joue un rôle essentiel pour la performance globale de la RSA, cette thèse fournit une analyse approfondi théorique sur ces impacts. Pour le deuxième sous-problème du RSA, l’allocation de ressource spectrale, deux chemins optiques quelconques partageant des fibres optiques communes pourraient devoir être isolés dans le domaine spectral avec une bande de garde appropriée pour empêcher la diaphonie et / ou réduire les menaces de sécurité de la couche physique. Cette thèse considère le scénario dans lequel les exigences de bandes de garde réelles optiques sont différentes pour différentes paires de chemins, et étudie comment affecter les ressources spectrales efficacement dans une telle situation. L’hétérogénéité de la topologie des demandes de réseau virtuel (VNR) est un facteur important qui entrave les performances de la VNE. Cependant, dans de nombreuses applications spécialisées, les VNR ont des caractéristiques structurelles communes par exemple, des chemins et des cycles. Pour obtenir de meilleurs résultats, il est donc essentiel de concevoir des algorithmes dédiés pour ces applications en tenant compte des caractéristiques topologiques. Dans cette thèse, nous prouvons que les problèmes VNE dans les topologies de chemin et de cycle sont NP-difficiles. Afin de les résoudre, nous proposons des algorithmes efficaces également analysons leurs ratios d’approximation / With the coming of intellectual era and Internet of Everything (IoE), the needs of worldwide communication and diverse applications have been explosively growing. This information revolution requires the future communication networks to be more efficient, intellectual, agile and scalable. Many technologies have emerged to meet the requirements of next generation communication networks such as Elastic Optical Networks (EONs) and networking virtualization. However, there are many challenges coming along with them, such as Routing and Spectrum Assignment (RSA) in EONs and Virtual Network Embedding (VNE) in network virtualization. This dissertation addresses the algorithm design and analysis for these challenging problems: the impacts of traffic distribution and network topology on lightpath routing, the distance spectrum assignment and the VNE problem for paths and cycles.For lightpath routing, the first subproblem of the RSA, there is always a pending issue that how the changes of the traffic distribution and EON topology affect it. As the lightpath routing plays a critical role in the overall performance of the RSA, this dissertation provides a thoroughly theoretical analysis on the impacts of the aforementioned two key factors. To this end, we propose two theoretical chains, and derive the optimal routing scheme taking into account two key factors. We then treat the second subproblem of RSA, namely spectrum assignment. Any two lightpaths sharing common fiber links might have to be isolated in the spectrum domain with a proper guard-band to prevent crosstalk and/or reduce physical-layer security threats. We consider the scenario with diverse guard-band sizes, and investigate how to assign the spectrum resources efficiently in such a situation. We provide the upper and lower bounds for the optimal solution of the DSA, and further devise an efficient algorithm which can guarantee approximation ratios in some graph classes.The topology heterogeneity of Virtual Network Requests (VNRs) is one important factor hampering the performance of the VNE. However, in many specialized applications, the VNRs are of some common structural features e.g., paths and cycles. To achieve better outcomes, it is thus critical to design dedicated algorithms for these applications by accounting for topology characteristics. We prove the NP-Harness of path and cycle embeddings. To solve them, we propose some efficient algorithms and analyze their approximation ratios.

En kvalitativ studie om hur arbetsförmedlare hanterar mångfalden bland nyanlända flyktingar i etableringsuppdraget / A quality study about employment officer handle the refugees in the Introduction

The purpose of this study is to investigate/evaluate how employment officers handle the refugees who have different backgrounds and therefore different conditions for entering the labour market. Semi-structured interview was used and a total of seven employment officers participated and the result shows that all the participants experienced cultural clashes in their work. Everyone has their own way for solving this issue, for example to inform the clients how the employment officer works or helping the clients with their issues and questions. The aspects of ethnicity and gender are important especially for female clients during conversation for establishment since the living conditions between the genders are not always equally. Depending on the clients individually qualifications the employment officers will decide how to help the clients. Furthermore, the employment officers considered that those efforts offered to the clients are sufficient. However, establishment within two years is hard to achieve, especially for clients who are illiterates and women who have been housewives their whole life. The result should be interpreted with caution due to the few participants.

Implementation and evaluation of two prediction techniques for the Lorenz time series

Thesis (MSc)-- Stellenbosch University, 2003. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis implements and evaluates two prediction techniques used to forecast deterministic chaotic time series. For a large number of such techniques, the reconstruction of the phase space attractor associated with the time series is required. Embedding is presented as the means of reconstructing the attractor from limited data. Methods for obtaining the minimal embedding dimension and optimal time delay from the false neighbour heuristic and average mutual information method are discussed. The first prediction algorithm that is discussed is based on work by Sauer, which includes the implementation of the singular value decomposition on data obtained from the embedding of the time series being predicted. The second prediction algorithm is based on neural networks. A specific architecture, suited to the prediction of deterministic chaotic time series, namely the time dependent neural network architecture is discussed and implemented. Adaptations to the back propagation training algorithm for use with the time dependent neural networks are also presented. Both algorithms are evaluated by means of predictions made for the well-known Lorenz time series. Different embedding and algorithm-specific parameters are used to obtain predicted time series. Actual values corresponding to the predictions are obtained from Lorenz time series, which aid in evaluating the prediction accuracies. The predicted time series are evaluated in terms of two criteria, prediction accuracy and qualitative behavioural accuracy. Behavioural accuracy refers to the ability of the algorithm to simulate qualitative features of the time series being predicted. It is shown that for both algorithms the choice of the embedding dimension greater than the minimum embedding dimension, obtained from the false neighbour heuristic, produces greater prediction accuracy. For the neural network algorithm, values of the embedding dimension greater than the minimum embedding dimension satisfy the behavioural criterion adequately, as expected. Sauer's algorithm has the greatest behavioural accuracy for embedding dimensions smaller than the minimal embedding dimension. In terms of the time delay, it is shown that both algorithms have the greatest prediction accuracy for values of the time delay in a small interval around the optimal time delay. The neural network algorithm is shown to have the greatest behavioural accuracy for time delay close to the optimal time delay and Sauer's algorithm has the best behavioural accuracy for small values of the time delay. Matlab code is presented for both algorithms. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: In hierdie tesis word twee voorspellings-tegnieke geskik vir voorspelling van deterministiese chaotiese tydreekse ge"implementeer en geevalueer. Vir sulke tegnieke word die rekonstruksie van die aantrekker in fase-ruimte geassosieer met die tydreeks gewoonlik vereis. Inbedmetodes word aangebied as 'n manier om die aantrekker te rekonstrueer uit beperkte data. Metodes om die minimum inbed-dimensie te bereken uit gemiddelde wedersydse inligting sowel as die optimale tydsvertraging te bereken uit vals-buurpunt-heuristiek, word bespreek. Die eerste voorspellingsalgoritme wat bespreek word is gebaseer op 'n tegniek van Sauer. Perception of integration in the MBChB III programme at Walter Sisulu University

Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2013. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Since the SPICES (S: student centred; P: problem-based learning; I: integration; C: community based/hospital based; E: electives; and S: systematic apprenticeship based) model of medical curriculum was proposed by Harden, most medical schools worldwide have introduced curriculum changes toward a paradigm shift in teaching and learning. Walter Sisulu University (WSU) introduced such changes in 1992 when problem-based learning (PBL) was implemented in the medical school. This research assignment examines the level of horizontal integration within the WSU Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB III) programme. The purpose of the study was to determine the students’ and tutors’ perceptions of integration in the curriculum. A cross-sectional descriptive survey was designed and piloted in 2009 and the questionnaire was then administered to MBChB III students who agreed to form part of the study. The tutors’ opinions on integration were also explored. A questionnaire on integration using a five-point Likert scale, was administered to both the students (12 questions) and the tutors (six questions). Six open-ended questions on integration were added to the students’ instrument and one to the tutors’ instrument, for qualitative analysis and to assist in triangulation. In addition, semi-structured interviews were conducted with the tutors individually. As a result of the survey, it seemed that all the students were “satisfied” or “very satisfied” with the level of integration of content and learning. All the tutors were aware of the need for integration, but some were not familiar with how the learning environment could be modified to enhance students’ approach to integration. MBChB III students at WSU highly valued the integration of learning and teaching during tutorials. Thirty-three per cent of the tutors, though, believed that integration increased their workload. All the tutors thought that integration facilitated students’ learning skills and promoted student engagement, learning and interaction with faculty. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Sedert Harden die SPICES-model as mediese kurrikulum voorgestel het, het die meeste mediese skole in die wêreld kurrikulumveranderings ingevoer as ʼn paradigmaskuif in onderrig en leer. Die Walter Sisulu-universiteit (WSU) het in 1992 sulke veranderings aangebring toe probleemgebaseerde leer (PBL) in die mediese skool geïmplementeer is. Hierdie navorsingswerkstuk ondersoek die mate van integrasie in die Baccalaureus in Geneeskunde-program en Baccalaureus in Chirurgie-program (MBChB III) aan die WSU verder as die PBL-tutoriale kan vorder. Na afloop van die toepassing en ontleding van die opname was al die studente “tevrede” of “baie tevrede” met die vlak van integrasie van leer, met begrip en met die vlak van integrasie van inhoud. Al die studieleiers was bewus van die behoefte aan integrasie, maar sommige was nie vertroud met hoe die leeromgewing aangepas kan word om die studente se benadering tot integrasie te bevorder nie. MBChB III-studente aan die WSU het 'n hoë waarde geheg aan die integrasie van leer en onderrig tydens tutoriale. Drie-en-dertig persent van die studieleiers het egter geglo dat integrasie hulle werkslading verhoog. Al die studieleiers was van mening dat integrasie die studente se leervaardighede fasiliteer en die studente se deelname, leer en interaksie met akademiese personeel bevorder.

Διερεύνηση βελτιωμένων τεχνικών εφαρμογής του μοντέλου κυκλοφοριακού σχεδιασμού SATURN

Αντικείμενο της παρούσας μεταπτυχιακής εργασίας είναι η διερεύνηση βελτιωμένων τεχνικών εφαρμογής του μοντέλου κυκλοφοριακού σχεδιασμού SATURN. Για το σκοπό αυτό επιλέγονται να μελετηθούν δύο διαφορετικές περιοχές στην υφιστάμενη και σε μία νέα κατάσταση. Συγκεκριμένα, η πρώτη περιοχή μελετάται ως ρυθμιστικό δίκτυο και οι αλλαγές στη νέα της κατάσταση αφορούν αλλαγή λειτουργίας κάποιων υφιστάμενων οδών όπως είναι αλλαγή κατεύθυνσης ροής οχημάτων και οι μονοδρομήσεις, και η δεύτερη ως προσομοίωσης και οι αλλαγές στη νέα της κατάστασης αφορούν την πεζοδρόμηση μίας οδού. Τα δίκτυα αυτά μελετώνται και ως ντετερμινιστικά και ως στοχαστικά με τη χρήση του αλγόριθμου Frank & Wolf και του Burrell αντίστοιχα, αλγόριθμους που διατίθενται μέσω του SATURN. Από την ανάλυση των αποτελεσμάτων παρατηρείται ότι οι αλλαγές που εφαρμόστηκαν στα δύο δίκτυα της παρούσας εργασίας φορτίζουν τα δίκτυο περισσότερο με αποτέλεσμα να επιβαρύνουν την κυκλοφοριακή κατάσταση. Επιπλέον διαπιστώθηκε ότι οσο πιο απλό είναι ένα δίκτυο τόσο πιο εύκολη είναι η επιλογή της συντομότερης διαδρομής από τους χρήστες, ενώ όσο πληθαίνουν οι εναλλακτικές διαδρομές παρατηρούνται διαφορές στην κατανομή των φόρτων σε αυτές και στην επίλυση του προβλήματος καταμερισμού, καθώς επίσης και ότι σε περιπτώσεις όπου οι εναλλακτικές διαδρομές καθίστανται ανταγωνιστικές παρατηρείται διασπορά των μετακινούμενων σε αυτές. Επιπροσθέτως ενδείκνυται το στοχαστικό μοντέλο ως καταλληλότερο και στις δύο εφαρμογές. Τέλος τo SATURN αποτελεί ένα χρήσιμο προγράμματα ανάλυσης δικτύων, προσομοίωσης και κατανομής της κυκλοφορίας. / The subject of this thesis is the investigation of improved application techniques of model transport planning SATURN. For this purpose, two different networks were chosen to study in two situations, one in an existing and one in a new situation . Specifically , the first area is being studied as a buffer network. The changes in the new situation are changes as the flow direction of vehicles and one-way. The second area is being studies as simulation network. In the new situation one street become way for pedestrian. These networks are studied as deterministic and stochastic using the algorithm Frank & Wolf and Burrell respectively, these algorithms are available through the SATURN. After the analysis of the results, it is observed that changes implemented in both networks affect in a worse way the traffic situation. In addition it was found that the simpler is a network the easier is to select the shortest route from the users. Opposed to this, increasing the alternative routes observed differences in the distribution of flows in them and in the assignment problem’s solution. Moreover in cases where alternative routes become competitive, dispersion of traveling is observed in them. Additionally stochastic model is showed to be appropriate in both applications . Finally to SATURN is a useful network analysis programs of simulation and assignment of traffic to urban road networks.

INTEGRATION OF THE REGRESSION-BASED LAND USE MODEL AND THE COMBINED TRIP DISTRIBUTION-ASSIGNMENT TRANSPORTATION MODEL

Regional growth caused the emergence of traffic congestion and pollution in the past few decades, which have started to affect small urban areas. These problems are not only related to transportation system design but also to land use planning. There has been growing recognition that the relationship between land use and transportation needs to be understood and analyzed in a consistent and systematic way. Integrated urban models have recently been introduced and implemented in several metropolitan areas to systematically examine the relationship between land use and transportation. The general consensus in the field of integrated urban models is that each model has its own limitations and assumptions because they are each designed for different application purposes. This dissertation proposes a new type of methodology to integrate the regression-based land use model and the combined trip distribution-assignment transportation model that can be applied to both metropolitan areas and small urban areas. The proposed integrated land use and transportation model framework has three components: the regression-based land use model, the combined trip distributionassignment transportation model, and the interaction between these two models. The combined trip distribution-assignment model framework provides the platform to simultaneously integrate the transportation model with the land use model. The land use model is developed using an easy-to-implement method in terms of correlation and regression analysis. The interaction between the land use model and the transportation model is examined by two model frameworks: feedback model framework and simultaneous model framework. The feedback model framework solves the land use model and the transportation model iteratively. The simultaneous model framework brings the land use model and the transportation models into one optimization program after introducing the used path set. Both the feedback model and the simultaneous model can be solved to estimate link flow, origin-destination (OD) trips, and household distribution with the results satisfying network equilibrium conditions. The proposed integrated model framework has an “affordable and easy-toimplement” land use model; it can be performed in small urban areas with limited resources. The model applications show that using the proposed integrated model framework can help decision-makers and planners in preparing for the future of their communities.

"... en utbildning är ju inte allt, erfarenhet väger mer ibland" : - en fenomenografisk studie om personal i fritidshemmet

Studiens syfte är att belysa och analysera hur fritidspersonalen uppfattar uppdraget i fritidshemsverksamheten samt om deras uppfattning påverkas av deras olika bakgrunder. Vi menar med bakgrund vad de har för erfarenhet samt deras utbildningsnivåer. I vår studie har vi använt oss av kvalitativa intervjuer för att införskaffa datamaterial, detta har vi gjort i två fritidshemsverksamheter. För att kunna analysera och kategorisera vårt inhämtade datamaterial har vi utgått från den teoretiska utgångspunkten fenomenografi.   Vi intervjuade fjorton personer som arbetar i fritidshemmet och av dem var det bara en högskoleutbildad fritidspedagog, resterande hade ingen liknande utbildning och baserade sina kunskaper på erfarenhet. Med fenomenografi som utgångspunkt kunde vi kategorisera fritidspersonalens uppfattningar om uppdraget i fyra kategorier. Dessa kategorier var fostran, barnen, aktiviteter och vuxnas samverkan. Vi fick även fram uppfattningar om deras syn på utbildning och dess relevans för fritidshemsverksamheten. Ytterligare framgår det om hur fritidspersonalen beskriver hur det är att arbeta i fritidshemmet. / The purpose of this study is to illuminate and analyze how afterschool educators perceive their assignments in leisure activities and whether the perception is influenced by their backgrounds. With backgrounds we mean what experience they have and what their level of education is. In our study we have used qualitative interviews to acquire data, we have done this in two afterschool centers. In order to analyze and categorize our collected data we have used the theoretical point of phenomenography.   We have interviewed fourteen people who works in afterschool centers and it was only one of them who had an afterschool teacher degree, the rest had no similar education and based their knowledge on experience. With phenomenography we could categorize the perceptions of the afterschool teachers in four categories. These categories were nurture, children, activities and cooperation between teachers. We also obtained perceptions about their views on education and its relevance to afterschool center. Furthermore the afterschool teachers describe how it is to work in afterschool center.

Les déterminants de l’acceptation d’une affectation à l’international

Cette étude porte les raisons de l’acceptation d’une affectation internationale. Alors que l’augmentation du nombre d’entreprises et d’activités internationales crée une pression de plus en plus forte à recourir à la mobilité internationale, ces entreprises éprouvent toujours certaines difficultés à attirer et à sélectionner les bons candidats. Notre étude, effectuée auprès d’individus travaillant dans le domaine de l’ingénierie-construction, visait, dans un premier temps, à connaître quels sont les déterminants individuels, organisationnels et de l’affectation dans l’acceptation d’une affectation à l’international. Dans un second temps, nous avons cherché à vérifier l’importance relative de ces déterminants dans l’acceptation d’une affectation à l’international. Nos analyses ont révélé que deux déterminants individuels et sept déterminants organisationnels ont influence positive significative dans l’acceptation d’une affectation internationale. / This study’s main focus is the reasons that are involved in the acceptance of an international assignment. While the number of multinational corporations is increasing, so is the pressure to attract and select candidates that will accept an international assignment. Based on a sample of employees working in engineering and construction, our study had two main goals. First, we sought to identify which are the key individual, organisational and assignment variables in the decision to accept or refuse an international assignment. The second goal was to verify the relative importance of those key variables in the acceptation of an international assignment. Our analyses revealed that two individual variables and seven organisational variables have a significant and positive influence in the acceptance of an international assignment.

Using metrics from multiple layers to detect attacks in wireless networks

The IEEE 802.11 networks are vulnerable to numerous wireless-specific attacks. Attackers can implement MAC address spoofing techniques to launch these attacks, while masquerading themselves behind a false MAC address. The implementation of Intrusion Detection Systems has become fundamental in the development of security infrastructures for wireless networks. This thesis proposes the designing a novel security system that makes use of metrics from multiple layers of observation to produce a collective decision on whether an attack is taking place. The Dempster-Shafer Theory of Evidence is the data fusion technique used to combine the evidences from the different layers. A novel, unsupervised and self- adaptive Basic Probability Assignment (BPA) approach able to automatically adapt its beliefs assignment to the current characteristics of the wireless network is proposed. This BPA approach is composed of three different and independent statistical techniques, which are capable to identify the presence of attacks in real time. Despite the lightweight processing requirements, the proposed security system produces outstanding detection results, generating high intrusion detection accuracy and very low number of false alarms. A thorough description of the generated results, for all the considered datasets is presented in this thesis. The effectiveness of the proposed system is evaluated using different types of injection attacks. Regarding one of these attacks, to the best of the author knowledge, the security system presented in this thesis is the first one able to efficiently identify the Airpwn attack.

Development of a behaviorally induced system optimal travel demand management system

The basic design concept of most advanced traveler information systems (ATIS) is to present generic information to travelers, leaving travelers to react to the information in their own way. This passive way of managing traffic by providing generic traffic information makes it difficult to predict the outcome and may even incur an adverse effect, such as overreaction (also referred to as the herding effect). Active traffic and demand management (ATDM) is another approach that has received continual attention from both academic research and real-world practice, aiming to effectively influence people's travel demand, provide more travel options, coordinate between travelers, and reduce the need for travel. The research discussed in this article deals with how to provide users with a travel option that aims to minimize the marginal system impact that results from this routing. The goal of this research is to take better advantage of the available real-time traffic information provided by ATIS, to further improve the system level traffic condition from User Equilibrium (UE), or a real-world traffic system that is worse than UE, toward System Optimal (SO), and avoid passively managing traffic. A behaviorally induced, system optimal travel demand management model is presented to achieve this goal through incremental routing. Both analytical derivation and numerical analysis have been conducted on Tucson network in Arizona, as well as on the Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (CAMPO) network in Austin, TX. The outcomes of both studies show that our proposed modeling framework is promising for improving network traffic conditions toward SO, and results in substantial economic savings.
