Denna uppsats gör framför allt en textanalys av Rökstenen baserad på en modern historiesyn av den sena järnålderns förhållanden i Skandinavien. Med en sådan kontexuell bakgrund kan ett sameuropeiskt, senantikt idégods användas i en komparativ analys. Utgångspunkten är att Rökstenen manifisterar ett kosmologiskt budskap och att denna kosmologi är en variant av den under perioden alenarådande platonska harmoniska kosmologin. Även futharken analyseras från samma utgångspunkt.

In this paper the author has read and compared The Poetical Edda, and Margaret Clunies-Ross' book, Prolonged echoes: Old norse myth in medieval northern society(1998). The aim of this paper is to offer alternative interpretations to the ones Clunies-Ross has made by drawing on The Poetical Edda and other sources. Margaret Clunies-Ross' interpretations left much unaccounted for by giving one-sided analyses of love, marriage, status and family relations. She simply focused on the female as the one who gets undermined in all of these categories. Modin finds that this is a very narrow perspective of the gender dynamics in Norse mythology, especially after reading The Poetical Edda. She is not alone in her opinion. There is much evidence that contradicts Clunies-Ross' theories which the author of this paper aims to clarify by offering new perspectives on these texts. She also gives the reader examples of parts in Norse mythology that are not only interpreted differently from Clunies-Ross, but also several other authors, such as Catharina Ingelman-Sundberg, Peter Andreas Munch, John Lindow et cetera.

The aim of this essay is to observe how the pre-Christian mythology of Scandinavia, commonly known as Norse mythology, is depicted during the first season of the History Channel TV-series Vikings from 2013, and to analyze how well those depictions correspond with modern day knowledge of that mythology. More specifically this essay studies how the pre-Christian gods, myths and rituals are depicted. To accomplish this the essay uses a modified version of a method called structured observation, a method otherwise associated with observing people. Roland Barthes theory of a primary- and secondary meaning of language is used as the theoretical framework for this essay.  The results show that many Christian themes can be detected in Vikings. For example, in the depictions of the god Odin who sometimes becomes a symbol for the Christian God. This is shown by depicting Odin being able to have decided people’s destinies, he is not tied to a specific task, and is prayed to in a manner that looks like a Christian prayer. Modern norms of equality between genders, a linear perception of time, and a distaste for human sacrifice can be detected in the Series’ depictions of Valhalla, Ragnarök and rituals of sacrifice. The myths depicted in Vikings can be divided into three categories: how humans understand the world, what happens after you die in battle and what will happen during the end of the world. The rituals depicted all happen during one of two ceremonies: funerals and sacrifice.

Denna uppsats ämnade att undersöka två fornskandinaviska myters potential som material i religionskunskapens etikundervisning på gymnasiet sett till ämnets syfte att bredda elevens kunskap om och förståelse inför olika etiska förhållningssätt. För att ta reda på detta gjordes en idéanalys av etiken i de valda myterna utifrån olika etiska teorier. Resultatet från idéanalysen visade att agerande utefter flera etiska teorier återfanns i båda myterna. Analysens resultat sattes i relation till ämnesplanen för religionskunskap och kursplanen för Religionskunskap 1 samt tidigare forskning om etikdidaktik och etik i fornskandinavisk mytologi. Utifrån diskussionen kunde flera slutsatser dras. En slutsats var att myterna verkar kunna användas sett till det undersökta ämnessyftet att bredda elevens kunskap om och förståelse inför olika etiska förhållningssätt. Detta kan bli möjligt bland annat genom goda förkunskaper om etiska teorier och sedan samreflektion med frivilligt deltagande. Då varken utrymme i uppsatsen, och inte heller tid fanns, avgränsades arbetet mot bland annat fler myter, kompletterande kvalitativa metoder och ytterligare etiska teorier.

I uppsatsen undersöks det hur idéinnehållet i det götiska kulturarvet gestaltas och kommer till uttryck i tre fornnordiskt föreställande konstverk under 1800-talet. Med utgångspunkt i tre konstverk av Johan Gustaf Sandberg, Nils Jakob Blommér och Johan August Malmström diskuteras kopplingar mellan deras innehåll och götiska idéer kring nationen i 1800-talets Sverige. Hur dessa kopplingar ser ut varierar mellan de tre konstverken, men att innehållet i någon mån kan förankras i det götiska kulturarvet påvisas i uppsatsen.
