Naked truth: a glimpse into the lives and experiences of exotic dancers

Tillier, Rachel Joanne 08 1900 (has links)
This research explores the lives and experiences of female exotic dancers with the aim of gaining an empathic understanding of their involvement in the stripping industry. The stereotypes and generalizations of exotic dancers and the stripping industry undermine the exotic dancer's ability to be seen as an individual with her own story and her own experiences. The participants of this research were selected through convenience sampling and consist of three female exotic dancers. The researcher interviewed the participants using a semi-structured interview format and focused on the dancer's experience within the exotic dancing industry, her family history, her relationships, and personal life. The data was analysed using thematic network analysis. The thematic networks are often contradictory and inconsistent with the common stereotypes and ideas held about exotic dancers. The results indicate that some exotic dancers experience meaning, healing, gratification, and power within their work and live responsible, productive lives. / Psychology / M.A. (Clinical Psychology)

Abarca Fernández, José Miguel 01 September 2017 (has links)
The following document sets forth the validity and usefulness of the promotional and outreach tools that industrial designers and design studios currently use to advertise their products and promote their services. From the perspective that the new media, platforms, and social networks pose as well as the technology that is associated with them, we will analyze tools and actions that traditionally have been applied by this group. From the virtual portfolio, the managing of exhibition events and creative talks, to interacting with new digital media and the general public. Focused on a national scope, the research work deals with aspects such as the current industrial designers employment situation and the industrial design economic impact in our society, always from the perspective that our recent socioeconomic measures carried out by the Different governments have imposed on this group. In addition, we have analyzed the current situation and the way of working that more than 80 currently active studies or industrial designers (from more than 380 creatives in total that have exhibited at Nude contest) and now are considered the current quarry of Spanish design. Their reality, the success or otherwise of their way of working, and the results they get, have been considered the benchmark on which to base the new methodologies of action. This study aims to show how the current industrial designers operate in a changing society, which requires to be constantly connected, sharing information and interacting, not only to maintain an updated knowledge of the reality that surrounds them at global level, but to get a place in an increasingly competitive and demanding market. The cytoplasmic dynein motor complex at microtubule plus-ends and in long range motility of early endosomes, microtubule plus-end anchorage and processivity of cytoplasmic dynein

Roger, Yvonne January 2013 (has links)
Cytoplasmic dynein is a microtubule-dependent motor protein which participates in numerous cellular processes. The motor complex consists of two heavy chains, intermediate, light intermediate and 3 families of light chains. Dynein is able to bind to these accessory chains as well as to regulatory proteins which enables the motor protein to fulfil such a variety of cellular processes. The associated light chains participate in long-distance organelle and vesicle transport in interphase and in chromosome segregation during mitosis. However, how these light chains control the activity of the motor protein is still unknown. In this study, I combine molecular genetics and live cell imaging to elucidate the role of the associated dynein light intermediate and light chains in dynein behaviour and early endosome (EE) motility in hyphal interphase cells as well as the anchorage of dynein to the microtubule (MT) plus-end in interphase and mitotic cells. I show that the dynein light intermediate chain (DLIC) as well as the light chain 2 (DLC2, Roadblock) are involved in dynein processivity and EE movement in interphase. The downregulation of either protein results in short hyphal growth which could be caused by a decreased runlength of EE and dynein. In addition, both proteins participate in dynein anchorage to the microtubule plus-end in interphase and mitosis as well as in spindle elongation during mitosis. Each protein causes a decrease of the motor protein dynein at MT plus-ends. Surprisingly, I found only minor or no defects in LC8 or Tctex mutants in the observed functions of dynein. LC8 seems to affect the dynein but not the EE runlength. In this case, dynein is still able to move into the bipolar MT array from where kinesin3 is able to take over EEs and move them towards the cell center. In contrast, Tctex has no effect on dynein or EE runlength or any other observed dynein function in hyphal cells. However, it causes a reduction in spindle elongation. Taken together, DLIC and DLC2 are important for dynein behaviour in long distance transport as well as in spindle positioning and elongation during mitosis. Furthermore, I studied the involvement of the dynein regulators Lis1 and NudE as well as the plus-end binding protein Clip1 (Clip-170 homologue) in the anchorage of dynein to the astral microtubule plus-ends during mitosis. The disruption of the anchorage complex at the astral MT plus-end causes a decrease in dynein number at this site and therefore slower spindle elongation in Anaphase B. Taken together, all three proteins are involved in anchorage of dynein to the astral microtubule tip and the subsequent spindle elongation. Furthermore, these findings also show that Ustilago maydis evolved two different mechanisms to anchor the motor protein to MT plus-ends in hyphal and mitotic cells. The plus-end binding protein Peb1 (EB1 homologue) and the dynein regulator dynactin mediate the dynein anchorage in hyphal cells whereas in mitotic cells the plus-ends binding protein Clip1 and the dynein regulators Lis1 and NudE anchor dynein to astral MT plus-ends.

Dermaseptine B2 : un peptide antimicrobien issue des sécrétions de peau de Phyllomedusa bicolore avec des activités antitumorales et angiostatiques / Dermaseptine B2 : an antimicrobial peptide from skin secretions of phyllomedusa bicolor with antitumor and angiostatic activities

Van Zoggel, Johanna 09 December 2010 (has links)
The skin secretions of neotropical and South American frogs contains large amounts of a widerange of biological active molecules. Commonly studied are peptides with antimicrobialactivities. In this study we have postulated that the skin secretions from the South Americanfrog Phyllomedusa bicolor contain molecules with antitumor and angiostatic activities. Twowell known cationic alpha helical antimicrobial peptides of the dermaseptin (Drs) family wereidentified to have these activities: Drs B2 and Drs B3. Both peptides inhibited proliferationand colony formation of various tumor cell lines, and the proliferation and capillary formationof endothelial cell in vitro. Furthermore, Drs B2 inhibited tumor growth in a PC3 xenograftmodel in vivo.Research on the mechanism of action of Drs B2 on tumor cells PC3 demonstrated a rapidincreasing amount of cytosolic LDH, no activation of caspase-3, -9 or -8, and no changes inmitochondrial membrane potential. These data together indicate that Drs B2 does not act byapoptosis but possibly could fix to the tumor cell surface, disrupt the cellular plasmamembrane leading to its death by necrosis. In conclusion, Drs B2 could be an new interesting and promising pharmacological leadermolecule for the treatment of cancer. Its antitumor and angiostatic activities, especially itsselective targeting of tumoral cells with micro molar concentrations propose Drs B2 as anpotential candidate for the development of a new efficient targeting therapy against cancer.
