A surviving legacy: Nonviolent resistance in the Congressional Black Caucus, 2001-2007

Fraser, Rhone Sebastian 01 June 2007 (has links)
Select members of the Congressional Black Caucus through their votes, speeches, arrests and nonviolent forms of protest practice a renewed kind of nonviolent resistance against a neoconservative political agenda advanced by the executive branch of the U.S. government in the past six years. Their practices are nonviolent according to the definition of nonviolence discussed by Martin Luther King, Jr. in his 1962 New York Times Magazine article: "we will take direct action against injustice without waiting for other agencies to act...We will try to persuade with our words---but if our words fail we will try to persuade with our acts." Nonviolent resistance according to this quote means first trying to persuade with words then trying to persuade with direct action. This study will compare nonviolent methods of direct action between 2001 and 2007 and those between 1955 and 1963. The nonviolent methods between 2001 and 2007 resist the neoconservative policies that are based on the same assumptions as those in the civil rights movements between 1955 and 1963. The identification of five comparisons in particular proves a continuing tradition of nonviolent protest identified as a 'surviving legacy' of resistance against neoconservative policies. First, Rosa Parks's refusal to give up her seat on a city bus is comparable to U.S. Representative Barbara Lee's refusal to support the military invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan. Second, Daisy Bates's commitment to ensuring a quality public education for the Little Rock Nine is comparable to U.S. Representative Chaka Fattah's efforts to improve the Philadelphia public school system. Third, the organizing work of Ella Baker in creating the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee in 1960 is comparable to the organizing work of Maxine Waters in creating the Out of Iraq caucus in 2005. Fourth, the appeals to the U.S. Constitution of James Farmer and the Freedom Riders serves as a foundation for John Conyers' appeal to the U.S. Constitution in his lawsuit against George W. Bush. Fifth, the strategy of getting arrested to call attention to unjust foreign policies within the past five years is comparable to the "jail, no bail" strategy during 1962 and 1963. The major point of this thesis is to argue the existence of a concerted strategy of nonviolent resistance practiced by specific Congressional Black Caucus members. The thesis will compare nonviolent resistance in the 21st century to that of the early 1960s.

SHRACK: A SELF-ORGANIZING PEER-TO-PEER SYSTEM FOR DOCUMENT SHARING AND TRACKING

Tanta-ngai, Hathai 23 April 2010 (has links)
Given a set of peers with overlapping interests where each peer wishes to keep track of new documents that are relevant to their interests, we propose Shrack-a self-organizing peer-to-peer (P2P) system for document sharing and tracking. The goal of a document-tracking system is to disseminate new documents as they are published. We present a framework of Shrack and propose a gossip-like pull-only information dissemination protocol. We explore and develop mechanisms to enable a self-organizing network, based on common interest of document sets among peers. Shrack peers collaboratively share new documents of interest with other peers. Interests of peers are modeled using relevant document sets and are represented as peer profiles. There is no explicit pro file exchange between peers and no global information available. We describe how peers create their user pro files, discover the existence of other peers, locally learn about interest of other peers, and finally form a self-organizing overlay network of peers with common interests. Unlike most existing P2P file sharing systems which serve their users by finding relevant documents based on an instant query, Shrack is designed to help users that have long-term interests to keep track of relevant documents that are newly available in the system. The framework can be used as an infrastructure for any kind of documents and data, but in this thesis, we focus on research publications. We built an event-driven simulation to evaluate the performance and behaviour of Shrack. We model simulated users associated with peers after a subset of authors in the ACM digital library metadata collection. The experimental results demonstrate that the Shrack dissemination protocol is scalable as the network size increases. In addition, self-organizing overlay networks, where connections between peers are based on common interests as captured by their associated document sets, can help improve the relevance of documents received by peers in terms of F-score over random peer networks. Moreover, the resulting self-organizing networks have the characteristics of social networks.

SYNTHESIS AND EVALUATION OF PYRIDINIUM DERIVATIVES AS CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM NICOTINIC ACETYLCHOLINE RECEPTOR LIGANDS

Ayers, Joshua Thomas Longen 01 January 2006 (has links)
This project utilized synthesis and in vitro assays to generate antagonist SARs at various nAChR subtypes. Alkylation of the pyridino nitrogen of the nicotine molecule afforded subtype specific antagonists at a42* nAChR subtypes and nAChR subtypes that mediate nicotine-evoked dopamine release. Using this data, a series of mono-azaaromatic quaternary salts were produced and evaluated in binding and functional assays for a42* and a7* nAChR subtypes and nAChR subtypes that mediate nicotine-evoked dopamine release. Additionally, bis-azaaromatic quaternary salts were synthesized and evaluated in the same assays. Two potent lead compounds were identified. N-n-dodecylnicotinium iodide (NDDNI) was found to be very potent at both a42* nAChR subtypes and nAChR subtypes that mediate nicotine-evoked dopamine release. And the most promising candidate was N-N-bisdodecylpicolinium dibromide (bDDPiB), which was selective for the nAChR subtypes that mediate nicotine-evoked dopamine release (IC50 = 9 nM). Additionally, using the data from the SARs, predictive computer models were generated to assist in future compound assessment without in vitro assays. Three self-organizing map (SOMs) models were generated from three different sets of compounds. The groups consisted of the mono-substituted compounds, the bissubstituted compounds, and both sets combined. The models were able to successfully "bin" the test set of compounds after developing a model from a similar set of training compounds. Additionally, using genetic functional activity (GFA) algorithms an evolutionary approach to generating predictive model equations was applied to the compounds. Three separate equations were generated in order to form a predictive method for evaluating affinities at the a4b2* receptor subtype. In addition to the modeling and SAR work of the quaternary ammonium compounds, novel synthetic methods were also employed to develop enantiomerically pure nicotine analogs. Efficient enantioselective syntheses of (S)- and R-(+)-nornicotine, (S)-and R-(+)-anabasine, and (S)-and R-(+)-anatabine have been developed, affording isomers in high enantiomeric excess.

Darbe atlikta teorinė ikimokyklinio ugdymo pedagogų ir tėvų bendradarbiavimo galimybių apžvalga. Anketinės apklausos metodu buvo atliktas tyrimas kurio tikslas - atskleisti tėvų savanorystės organizavimo galimybes ikimokyklinėje įstaigoje. Uždaviniai: 1. Išryškinti pedagoginio bendradarbiavimo organizavimo galimybes. 2. Atskleisti savanoriškos veiklos ypatumus. 3. 3. Tyrimo duomenys atskleidė, kad ugdytinių tėvai savanoriauti galėtų visose keturiose veiklos srityse; metodinėje, ūkinėje... [toliau žr. visą tekstą] / In this work an academic survey on possibilities of collaboration between preschool educators and parents was carried out. Using a questionnaire we tried to analyse the possibility for parents to organize volunteering activities in a preschool facility. Tasks: 1. To highlight the possibilities of pedagogical collaboration organizing. 2. To educe the characteristics of volunteering. 3. To find out the possibility for parents to volunteer at preschool facilities. 18 preschool educators and 148 parents of children attending a preschool facility took part in this survey. In the empirical part of this survey the situation of collaboration between parents and preschool educators was discussed. The most important conclusions of this survey are these: 1. The foundation of pedagogical collaboration system is relationships. This system is as well based on the relationship between one scholar and the rest of the class, between scholar’s family and other parents of the class and school, also the relationships between educators themselves, and between educators and school’s administration. 2. Volunteering is a non-profitable, unprofessional activity without any payment, and conditions are based upon the agreement between a volunteer and the organiser of such activity. Parents’ participation in school’s activities provides benefits for the parents themselves, for schools, children and school’s community as well. Parents can volunteer in these sections: methodical, economic, social and... [to full text]

Management control in international joint ventures as self organising systems

Djajadikerta, Geri Hadrian. January 2002 (has links)
University of Technology, Sydney. Faculty of Business. / The need for more dynamic views on international joint ventures' control research has recently become a growing concern. Changes in the complexity of relationships between organisations and their environments have led to an increase in control problems and to a need to investigate a suitable framework of management control. The concept of self-organising systems that has emerged with the science of complexity produces some useful and interesting new ways to examine the behaviour of complex systems. Therefore, extending the recent development in self-organising systems into international joint ventures' control research is an opportunity to explore new insights into the development of joint ventures. This study takes an integrative approach by focusing on the integration of management control and self-organising properties of international joint ventures. The purpose of this study is to investigate the roles of management control systems in affecting international joint ventures' performance, from the perspective of alliance complexity constraints. A model of management control in international joint ventures as self-organising systems, representing a complexity-control-outcomes framework, is developed and tested empirically using the partial least square (FLS) approach, a distinctive structural equation modeling (SEM) based technique. The primary results of this study show that formal control mechanisms and control extent have significant direct effects on management automony and the international joint ventures' performance. Management autonomy as an intervening endogenous construct has a significant direct effect on the international joint ventures performance. Significant direct effects of organisational complexity on the formal control mechanisms and control extent are found, and a significant indirect effect of organisational complexity on the management autonomy is found. The overall results suggest a sound link between the complexity-control framework with the control-outcome framework, and the achievement of fit between these two frameworks is important for superior international joint ventures' performance.
