Previous issue date: 2011-05-23 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The aim of this research is to analyze, in the context of the modernization of the city of
São Paulo, the representations of the magic practitioners in the sensationalist news and in the
faits divers of the melodramatic newspaper A Capital. In the view of the publication, these
characters represented a setback on the way of civilization and were immoral per excellence.
Witches, faith healers, fake mediums and cartomancers underwent a process of
disqualification, being represented as highly dangerous people. On the other hand, spiritists
and occultists, due the fact that they based their practices on scientific, rational and
philosophic principles, were praised by the newspaper as people who were able to regenerate
society by spreading values that should be embodied by the people of Brazil and São Paulo,
such as erudition, highly moral, solidarity and religious feeling in the direction of
humanitarianism / A presente pesquisa tenciona, no contexto de modernização da cidade de São Paulo,
analisar as representações dos praticantes de magia nas notícias sensacionalistas e nos faits
divers melodramáticos do jornal A Capital.

Science, the occult, and the conservative project of late Victorian and Edwardian British mummy fictionMontague, Murray B. 05 August 2011 (has links)
This study examines late Victorian and Edwardian British mummy fiction as a response to the manifold anxieties of the last twenty or so years of the nineteenth century up to the First World War in Great Britain. Mummy narratives of this time reveal the genre to be a very flexible one, partaking not only of the expected Gothic form, but also making fascinating stories out of invasion narratives and mystery fiction, all the while commenting on—and trying to solve—the various challenges of the day. After an introductory chapter that sets the stage for my project, I examine problems of empire and worries about a failing masculinity in the second and third chapters of my study. My fourth chapter looks at the epistemological competition of science and the occult as ways of knowing. I conclude my examination of mummy fiction with a look at silent mummy films as a way to look ahead at the changes that occurred when mummy narratives began to be told in visual form. The whole of the project is examined through a New Historical approach, as I attempt to delineate the place of mummy fiction within the broader discourses of the period. The picture that emerges from the study is one that depicts a
worried nation concerned with scientific and social advancement while at the same time largely working to maintain the status quo. / Department of English

Levande men obetydlig : En analys av kosmisk skräck i H.P. Lovecrafts författarskap / Alive but Insignificant : An Analysis of Cosmic Horror in H.P. Lovecraft's WritingJidah, Abraham January 2024 (has links)
My essay is called “Alive but Insignificant: An Analysis of Cosmic Horror in H.P. Lovecraft’s Writing”. Howard Phillips Lovecraft has written many short stories surrounding the idea of “cosmic horror”. In this essay I seek to investigate how this cosmic horror works and what connections it has to occultism by analyzing six of his short stories: The Call of Cthulhu, The Colour Out of Space, The Dream Quest of Unknown Kadath, The Haunter of The Dark, The Nameless City and Nyarlathotep. In the essay I use sources that show Lovecraft’s biography and letters to build an idea of how he might have been thinking when writing and in the theory segment I bring up the sublime to show what “cosmic horror” means when analyzing Lovecraft. I analyze the stories based on three categories: The Fear of Cosmos, The Fear of The Occult and The Fear of The Abyss. In the second to last segment called discussion I got through everything that I have found through my analysis: Within The Fear of Cosmos, I analyze The Colour Out of Space, Nyarlathotep and The Dream Quest of Unknown Kadath to find that the fear comes from the idea that there is a force somewhere out in space that can destroy humanity on a whim and humans have no way of stopping it. Within The Fear of The Occult, I analyze the Cthulhucult in The Call of Cthulhu by bringing up Lovecraft’s connections to occultism and potential connections to Helena Blavatsky. To enforce the connection between Lovecraft and Blavatsky I use a quote from Haunter of The Dark that presents a book that Blavatsky has ties to. There I find that the fear comes from the idea that a malevolent monster is whispering in the ears of people, encouraging them to commit horrific acts and to abandon their humanity in its name. In The Fear of The Abyss, I analyze The Nameless City and The Call of Cthulhu to find that the fear comes from the idea that there is a powerful and horrifying monster sleeping somewhere under the earth and the ocean, waiting for the right time to awaken and come out of hiding, all while humanity is unaware of it. In the very last segment I go through some comments regarding the essay, where I share my biggest problems with Lovecraft and why certain parts of the essay was cut out.

Satanism has a destructive effect on the development and wellbeing of the
adolescent and is known to influence all levels of his or her development.
Satanists use a variety of forms of entrapment and their focus on the individual’s
need of worldly goods, wealth and acceptance makes the adolescent easy prey.
During this study the lack of guidelines, for play therapists who became involved
in the handling of adolescents entrapped in Satanism, was identified as the
research problem. Bearing in mind the research problem, the aim of this study
had thus been formulated, namely to formulate guidelines according to which play
therapists will be enabled to address the problem of adolescents entrapped in
Satanism. To fulfill this aim, the researcher had gathered information by means of
qualitative processes, based on evidence. / Social Work / M. Diac. (Play Therapy)

A critical analysis of Byang Kato’s demonology and its theological relevance for an evangelical demonologyMacDonald, Scott Douglas 02 1900 (has links)
What composes an Evangelical demonology? This dissertation aims to provide a fresh Evangelical demonology, reflecting and systematizing the biblical material on the demonic. To begin the process, Byang Kato’s background and demonology is examined, since Kato himself has a unique relationship to demonic practices by virtue of his upbringing. His demonological efforts are headlined by a booklet on the spirits, and throughout the rest of Kato’s theological output, Satan and his wicked comrades are frequently mentioned. Overall, Kato’s work presents timely contributions for our demonological goals, especially considering the multicultural context.
In an increasingly intermingled world, with many backgrounds being represented in multicultural Christian communities, Kato’s demonology is a superior model. Human perceptions concerning the demonic are often inseparable from prevailing cultural attitudes, and the temptation to exalt one’s own culture must be avoided, especially due to the new norm of multicultural churches, para-church organizations, and seminaries. Kato’s demonology gravitates to the biblical material, and thus it delivers both challenges and affirmations to every party.
Furthermore, Kato’s writings on the demonic are inherently linked to soteriology. After discerning some of the major themes of Kato’s soteriology, his exclusivism (and how it relates to demonology) is specifically discussed. Since Kato views the world outside of Christ as the dominion of Satan and the demonic, he advocates that one must turn to Christ for redemption. Then an Evangelical demonology itself is constructed. After highlighting particular contributions from Kato, criteria are outlined for the project before launching into the primary content. Demonic activity throughout the Bible is surveyed, and the argument is offered that demons do act as malevolent personal beings intent on instigating evil in the created order. Through this study of the demonic, the assertion that “demonology matters” is presented, as the doctrine of the demonic relates to the reliability of the Bible and the quality of our salvation. A biblical, Evangelical demonology also rises to modern challenges, including skepticism and speculation. Christians are planted on the sure ground of the Scriptures, prepared for the spiritual realities of the world in which we live. / Philosophy, Practical and Systematic Theology / D. Th.
