Designing for Wellbeing in the WorkplaceJanuary 2020 (has links)
abstract: Employee wellbeing is a top concern for many organizations as its been linked to job performance and organizational commitment (Colquit, LePine, & Wesson, 2019). Research suggests that overall wellbeing is important to employees as well. Organizations are significantly investing into upgrading workplace environments, and there is a need for a clear understanding of how those improvements truly impact employee wellbeing. Current workplace research reveals that the open-office floorplan accounts for more than 70% of office layouts in the United States and is most commonly used for the benefits of collaboration and efficiency (Gallup, 2017). However, the open office layout ranks poorly in current employee wellbeing studies with a number of office environment stressors such as noise, distractions, and privacy concerns noted to impact employee wellbeing (C. Bodin-Danielsson, 2016; Haynes, Suckley, & Nunnington, 2017). The knowledge work performed in office environments require high amounts of cognitive tasks and when combined with filtering distractions in the workplace it can increase strains caused by common office stressors, thereby impacting employee wellbeing (Bridger & Brasher, 2011). This study will examine common stressors from the open office environment and compare employee’s perceptions of their work environment before and after renovations, as well as observations and behavioral mapping that record how the built environment influences the behaviors of the occupants. This research seeks to understand how wellbeing in the open office is affected by its different physical environmental settings, and how this environment influences employee’s behaviors. The end research goal is to see if there is a significant correlation of physical work environment and workplace behaviors that are common in the open office to help understand how the designed interior workplace impacts the wellbeing of its users. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Design 2020

Working from Home - the new Office : Communication and Leadership for a Stay-at-home WorkforceHagenfeldt, Erik January 2021 (has links)
The objective of this paper is to discover what if any changes have occurred to communication and leadership due to COVID-19. The recent pandemic caused home-office to become the new standard for desk job workers but what if the home-office environment impacted communication and leadership. Seven middle managers of two large MNC’s based in Germany were interviewed to gain an understanding of the issue at hand. This paper focuses specifically on home-office caused by COVID-19 as all respondents of the study were employees formerly working in an office environment. To understand the implications of communication and leadership at the workplace relevant scientific literature was reviewed. The findings of the interviews were then compared with findings from said literature to develop new insights about communication and leadership at the home-office. Several changes to communication and leadership were identified from the data collected. Based on the perspectives of middle managers the identified changes appear to have had a negative affect on both communication and leadership. The cause of these negative effects is explained, and speculations are drawn as to how these effects will impact organizations in the long run.

Perceptions of office gossip amongst diverse groups in the workplaceGerber, Lise 21 May 2013 (has links)
Purpose– The purpose of this study was to determine whether there is a difference in the perceptions of diverse individuals, from different racial groups and genders, regarding office gossip. Design– This paper followed a qualitative interpretivist research design, and content analysis was used to analyse the transcribed data. Findings– The findings indicate that the perceptions of office gossip are not gender specific, whereas there were indications of race specific perceptions related to office gossip. A definition of office gossip was compiled and the nature of and the participants in office gossip were identified, while the reasons why people gossip in the workplace and the impact of gossip on an organisation and its employees were emphasised. Furthermore, the characteristics that can be used to draw a line between healthy communication and gossip were identified. Research limitations– The limitations of this study were that the results were limited to the respondents and the specific work context used. In addition, seeing that the focus of this study was the diverse perspectives of individuals from different genders and racial groups, other factors, such as personal and organisational factors that could also have influenced their perceptions of office gossip, were not considered. Practical implications– The results of this study should alert employers to the need for controlling office gossip effectively. Also, formal channels of communication should be utilised effectively to ensure that the grapevine is not misused. Furthermore, employers need to develop a policy against malicious office gossip which should be contextsensitive and detailed. Because gossip is not gender specific, attention also should be given to gossip across genders. Lastly, culture-sensitivity training could prevent different cultures gossiping about one another. Originality– This paper makes a contribution to the literature on gossip in organisations, as there is little known research in South Africa or elsewhere that explores the diverse perceptions of office gossip among employees from different racial groups. / Dissertation (MCom)--University of Pretoria, 2011. / Human Resource Management / unrestricted

Commercial real estate trends : An office market comparison between Stockholm and BostonNordqvist, Felix, Åhs, Linus January 2015 (has links)
Over the past few years there has been a clear trend regarding demand for office space in the central business district, CDB. The rent level is far greater there than in any other area, and vacancy is very low compared to other submarkets. People tend to prefer greater office location over salary and the office location works as a status symbol. Over the past few years companies have started to rearrange their offices, both interior wise and location wise. Some larger firms have moved their headquarters and offices from the central to prime suburbs, and many more are following this strategy. This study examines, by comparing different sub markets in Stockholm with similar submarkets in Boston, how the commercial real estate market in Stockholm will develop and what movements to expect in the office market. Are Stockholm’s sub markets following the Boston sub markets footsteps? Stockholm is growing rapidly both economically and population wise. Access to land in the city is limited and the boundaries of the inner city are pushed outwards. To the meet the demand in the inner city a common trend the past few years has been to reconstruct and convert office space to housing. Former industrial premises that earlier where converted to offices are now reconstructed as housing. Another trend has been to exploit and develop new areas outside the city to meet today’s demand. Problems occur when the majority of offices operate within the city, pushing the demand for transportation and increasing the density of 2 commuting. Since the commuting hours are becoming greater the demand for adjacent work places and offices may increase. The purpose of this master thesis is to investigate how the trends for office locations in Stockholm may change. In addition to that a comparison to the office market in Boston will be made. The areas that are defined in the study are Solna, Sundbyberg and Stockholm City in Sweden and Cambridge, Seaport and Downtown in Boston, USA. Every office market and sub market is unique in many ways which always needs to be in the back of the head of the reader when looking at this report. Boston and Stockholm are both premier cities when it comes to center of education and being a hub for tech start-ups and financial giants and are both following the general ups and downs of the economy. The conclusion drawn from this study is that each market are following the same trend but varies in initial levels and relative to each other. Regarding the rent level, Solna and Sundbyberg will, unlike Cambridge and Seaport, most likely not exceed the rent level in CBD and also not fall below in vacancy rate. The sub markets in each country differs a lot but Solna and Sundbyberg will most likely follow Cambridge and Seaport in both increasing rent levels and decreasing vacancy rates thanks to continuous increase in popularity - A big partition factor between the two Cities.
