An interpretive approach to performing two works by Franz Krommer for wind ensemble. Including a short history of Harmoniemusik, with origins, development, and chronology of the instruments and repertoire, the roles of "better-known" composers of Harmoniemusik, and its importance in both general music history and history of the wind band. An account of known biographical detail concerning Franz Krommer, his life, his musical involvement and career in Europe, and his place in music history. An overview of his compositions for wind groups other than the Harmoniemusik, including his symphonic music and concertos. Detailed analyses of the two octet-partitas, Partita in F, Op. 57 and Partita in E-flat, Op. 79, with discussion of thematic, harmonic, melodic, articulation, and formal characteristics illustrated through score examples. Examination of issues for a conductor to consider when approaching a performance of these works such as instrumentation (modern vs. period instruments, selecting 16-foot instrument), taking (or not taking) repeats with respect to form, interpreting articulations, determining metronomic tempos, ensemble balance, and style based on wind music of the Classical period. Also, how this music can (and why it should) be used by wind conductors as both a teaching supplement and a compositional model for pieces from the Classical period. Conclusion includes a call for further research on Krommer and his works.

Denna studie utgår från perspektivet att alla elever i den svenska gymnasieskolan på ett eller annat sätt är flerspråkiga. Den virtuella kontexten och globalisering har bidragit till att ungdomar i gymnasieåldern möter och engagerar sig i sociala kontexter där engelskan fyller ett viktigt kommunikativt syfte. Det teoretiska underlaget för studien är sociolingvistisksuperdiversitet vilket är en vidareutveckling av Vertovecs (2007) teori om hur migration påverkar och utvecklar språket. Data samlades in genom en videoinspelning omfattande ungefär två timmar när deltagarna spelade spelet It Takes Two, ett co-op spel som bygger påatt spelarna samarbetar. Data bearbetades via en teoridriven innehållsanalys som fokuserade på att identifiera och analysera funktionen av engelska i kommunikationen mellan två svensktalande personer. Resultatet av studien visar att kommunikationen sker genom ett transspråkande där deltagarna fritt varierar och blandar och använder sig av alla sina tillgängliga språkliga resurser. Detta resultat är viktigt för driva frågan om språkundervisning enbart ska drivas på målspråket. Digitaliseringen och globaliseringen har bidragit till att engelskan blir ett allt mer vardagligt språk för elever i 2020-talets svenska skola. Detta är en resurs som skolan inte tillvaratar. På så vis måste frågan lyftas om vilket språk som ska tillåtas i svenskundervisningen då språkanvändarna fortsatt, som alltid, skapar språket som de behöver. / Tämän tutkimuksen perustana toimii näkökulma, jonka mukaan jokainen ruotsalainen lukiolainen on tavalla tai toisella monikielinen. Tutkimus perustuu teoreettiseen käsitteeseen sosiolingvistinen superdiversiteetti, joka on jatko Vertovecin (2007) teoriaan siitä miten muuttoliike vaikuttaa ja kehittää kieltä. Tiedot kerättiin noin kaksi tuntia kestävän videotallenteen kautta, jossa osallistujat pelasivat yhteistyöhön perustuvaa ja vaativaa videopeliä It Takes Two. Tietoja käsiteltiin teorialähtöisellä sisältöanalyysillä, joka keskittyi tunnistamaan ja analysoimaan englannin kielen käyttöä kahden ruotsinkielisen lukiolaisenvälisessä viestinnässä. Tutkimuksen tulokset viittaavat siihen, että englannin kielen käyttö on suuri osa kommunikaatiota. Se joka tulee esiin limittäiskielisyydessä jossa osallistujat vapaasti vaihtelevat ja sekoittavat kieliä, ja käyttävät kaikkia saatavilla olevia kieliresurssejaan kommunikoidakseen. Tämän tutkimuksen tulos kyseenalaistaa näkemyksen, jonka mukaan kielenopetus pitäisi aina tehdä kohdekielellä. Yhteiskunnan digitalisoituminen ja globalisoitumen on johtanut siihen, että englannin kieli on tullut oppilaille enemmän ja enemmän arkikäyttöön 2020-luvun koulussa Ruotsissa. Tämä on resurssi, jota koulu ei hyödynnä. On siis nostettava esiin kysymys siitä, kieli pitäisi sallia ruotsin äitinkielenopetuksessa, kun kielenkäyttäjät jatkavat tarvitsemansa kielen luomista myös jatkossa. / This study is based on the perspective that each student attending the Swedish upper-secondary education is bilingual. This bilingualism stems from the fact that young in the digitalized world of the 2020s spend more time in social activities, such as videogames, or other forms of media with English as the primary language. Based on the theoretical framework of sociolinguistic superdiversity which is an evolution of the theory first introduced by Vertovec in 2007. Data was collected through a two-hour-long video recording when the participants played the video game It Takes Two, a co-op game that requires cooperation and teamwork to progress. The data were analyzed through theory-driven content analysis which focused on identifying and analyzing the function of English in communication between two Swedish-speaking students. The results suggest that the use of English constitutes a large part of the communication, this takes its form through translanguaging as the participants used all of their available linguistic resources to create meaning. The result of this study challenges the view that language education should always be conducted in the target language. In the digitalized and globalized society of the 21st century, the use of English is becoming more widespread and is already an integral part of most students’ everyday vocabulary. Therefore, it is important to question the current, mostly negative, views on translanguaging in first language education (L1 education).

The research project “Beethovens Werkstatt” is intended as a contribution to basic musicological research. Methods, concepts and digital components developed in this project using the example of Beethoven are meant to be transferable to other composers. In my paper, I choose Robert Schumann as an example to test this transferability. Concepts that were developed in the course of the first module of “Beethovens Werkstatt” aim at the reconstruction and digital representation of genetic variants. They are based on research on the composer’s work processes. Fundamental aspects of this research include, for example, the temporality of the writing process; the composer’s self-critical dialogue with what he has already written; the work routines that may lie behind it (can certain compositional strategies be derived from them?). These questions are not only specific to Beethoven. They can generally be asked in connection with other composers. However, a prerequisite for an insightful research is a good record of handwritten texts and manuscripts. Due to the rich source material and Schumann’s habit of documenting many details in his diaries and working manuscripts, a text-genetic and digital analysis of his working methods is particularly suitable.

Ämnet för denna kandidatuppsats är Arnold Schönbergs verk Pierrot Lunaire. Det komponerades under sommaren 1912 och är än idag ett av de mest fascinerande modernistiska verk som finns, ofta framfört och ständigt aktuellt. Jag har i uppsatsen, förutom att ha gett en redogörelse för uppkomsten av Pierrot Lunaire och dess betydelse, undersökt min egen inlärningsprocess när jag som sångerska instuderat fyra satser ur verket, och utifrån resultatet dragit slutsatser om hur den här typen av musik bäst instuderas. Syftet med studien var alltså en utforskning av olika metoder för instudering, specifikt inom området svårinlärd vokalmusik. Metodiskt består denna undersökning av några olika komponenter. Själva studien i inlärning genomfördes på min loggbok över övningstimmar ägnade åt Arnold Schönbergs Pierrot Lunaire, vilken jag strukturerat efter tre sinsemellan olika instuderingsmetoder, som sedan i retrospektiv vägs mot varandra för att påvisa vilken som ger störst effektivitet. Utöver detta har jag läst en rad vetenskapliga artiklar i akt och mening att få begrepp om Pierrot Lunaire’s upphovspersoner samt deras levnadsförlopp, och därtill om själva verkets natur. Vidare har jag tillsammans med en pianist navigerat mig igenom musiken och spelat in ett klingande exempel som bifogas till denna uppsats. Resultatet av studien har varit relativt entydigt men vägen till den slutsats jag kunde dra har inte varit helt rak – det har visat sig att olika inlärningsprocesser kan ge olika resultat beroende på om man vill lära sig materialet på lång eller kort sikt. Man kan dra slutsatsen att en grundlig och systematisk instudering av de olika musikaliska aspekterna var för sig, påvisat med instuderingsmetod nr. 2 har det mest långsiktiga resultatet i fråga om precision och säkerhet, vilket i sin tur leder till större konstnärlig frihet. This study seeks to examine the history of the Denton County Electric Co-operative and the Rural Electrification Administration, as well as the effect they had on electrifying rural agriculture sites.

The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the use of isorhythm in two of Arnold Schoenburg's chamber works, the Third and Fourth String Quartets. The study of rhythm in twelve-note music has been generally relegated to a position less prominent than that held by the study of any of the other important aspects of the style. This condition is due probably to the fact that rhythm underwent less change with the advent of the twelve-note school of composition than melody, counterpoint, or harmony experienced. However, Rufer states that "rhythm has a special formal function in Schoenberg's twelve-note music, in addition to its motivic function and to that of creating subdivisions.
