Trabalho e sexualidade : dispositivos em ação nos casos de discriminação por orientação sexual

Este estudo busca analisar a questão de como o dispositivo trabalho é atravessado pelo dispositivo sexualidade nos casos de discriminação por orientação sexual, e os reflexos desta dinâmica na constituição dos sujeitos. Assim, os objetivos deste trabalho são investigar como se apresenta a discriminação por orientação sexual no trabalho e seus reflexos nos processos de subjetivação dos sujeitos que passam por tal situação, bem como analisar quais são os caminhos possíveis percorridos pelas pessoas que sofrem tal tipo de discriminação, na busca de visibilidade, respeito e proteção legal. Para tanto foram entrevistados quatro sujeitos que passaram por discriminação nos ambientes de trabalho devido à orientação sexual que manifestam e procederam a denúncias junto a uma ONG pela livre expressão sexual, também foi entrevistada uma fiscal do trabalho da SRTE, órgão estatal que também recebe este tipo de denúncias. O que vemos é o trabalho tomado ainda como sustentáculo social, conformado em um jogo de poderes que se vale da sexualidade, bem como do familismo, para sua manutenção, (re)instituindo a heterossexualidade como norma às custas de outras formas de expressão sexual. Dessa forma, a discriminação por orientação sexual se mostra como uma realidade, tendo profundo impacto nos processos de subjetivação e nas possibilidades de sobrevivência dos sujeitos, uma vez que a demissão é o desfecho e a dificuldade de retorno ao mercado de trabalho são as conseqüências mais comuns. Frente a isso, acompanhamos a construção de uma rede social e jurídica de combate a esta forma de preconceito e pela não-discriminação por orientação sexual. / This paper searches to study how the work is influenced by the sexuality on the cases of discrimination linked to sexual orientation in the Brazilian context. The focus is mainly the discussion about the implications in the production of subjectivity, as well as the creation of social and juridical instruments and affirmative actions that intend to guarantee liberty of sexual expression. In order to attain this objective, we used a genealogical approach to define the possibility conditions to the emergence of sexual orientation discrimination as a social question. The work is still the basis of construction social and defines the sexuality mainly as heterosexuality, using the familism to support it. Sexual discrimination in the work put in danger its victims because takes their life support off. However there is a creation of juridical and social instruments and actions that aim reaches a sexual expression with dignity.

Proposição de um conjunto consolidado de elementos para guiar ações visando a orientação empreendedora em organizações de software

A Orientação Empreendedora (OE) é um tópico de estudo na temática do empreendedorismo. Entendida como empreendedorismo no nível organizacional, diversos autores têm sugerido que a OE pode influenciar positivamente o desempenho de uma organização. Alguns autores apontam que tem sido dada limitada ênfase na literatura para os eventos que desencadeiam o comportamento empreendedor nas organizações, um dos principais motivadores desse estudo, centrado na OE em organizações. O estudo se fundamenta na seguinte questão de pesquisa: A partir de uma base conceitual de OE e de um levantamento de práticas efetivas a ela relacionadas, que elementos possibilitam guiar ações visando a OE em organizações de software? O objetivo é propor um conjunto consolidado de elementos que possibilitem guiar ações visando a OE em organizações de software. Para isso, realizou-se pesquisa de natureza exploratória, com o uso de dados qualitativos. O estudo iniciou com pesquisa bibliográfica para constituição de base conceitual de OE. Em seguida, foi realizado estudo piloto para verificar a aplicabilidade da base conceitual. Numa etapa seguinte, realizou-se entrevista com especialistas dirigentes de entidades representativas do setor de software visando a identificação de organizações que se destacam em termos de empreendedorismo. Finalmente, procedeu-se à entrevista em profundidade com executivos dessas organizações com o intuito de fazer um levantamento de práticas efetivas de OE, tendo como referência a base conceitual adotada no estudo. Como resultado, apresenta-se um conjunto consolidado de elementos e categorias agregadoras, que enriqueceu a base conceitual de OE e foi consolidado a partir da literatura e da prática efetiva das organizações. Esse conjunto de elementos e categorias constitui importante referência para guiar ações visando a OE em organizações de software. Em termos teóricos, o estudo contribui com o enriquecimento e detalhamento da base conceitual de OE e suas dimensões, e, sobretudo, a proposição de categorias agregadoras e a consolidação de seus elementos. Em termos práticos contribui para que executivos, empresários, gestores de organizações de software possam obter subsídios para guiar ações visando a OE. / The Entrepreneurial Orientation (EO) is a studying topic in the entrepreneurship theme. Several authors who understand EO as entrepreneurship in the organizational level suggest that EO can influence the performance of an organization in a positive way. Some authors point that it has been given limited emphasis to events which derive organizational entrepreneurial behaviors. That is one of the main motivations of this EO centered study which has its foundation in the following research question: Based on a conceptual basis of EO as well as on a researched list of effective practices related to that EO model in organizations, what are the elements which make it possible to conduct actions in the direction of EO in software organizations? The objective is to propose a consolidated set of elements which allow actions aiming at EO in software organizations. For that reason an exploratory research was carried out using qualitative data. The study started with a literature review in order to compose the conceptual basis of EO. Afterwards a pilot study was done to verify the applicability of the conceptual basis. The following step was an interview with specialists who are administrators in representative organizations in the software sector to identify the ones which are outstanding in terms of entrepreneurship. Finally a deeper interview with executives from those organizations was conducted to make an account of EO effective practices having the conceptual basis of EO as its basis. As a result, a set of consolidated elements and aggregated categories which enhanced the conceptual basis of EO were presented based on the literature and on effective practice of EO. That set of elements and aggregating categories constitute important reference to conduct actions in the EO direction in software organizations. In theoretical terms the study contributes to the enhancement and detailing of the conceptual basis of EO and its dimensions mainly through the proposition of aggregating categories and consolidation of its elements. In practical ways it contributes to executives, directors and managers in software organizations who can get subsidies to conduct actions aiming at EO.

Inclusive guise of 'gay' asylum : a sociolegal analysis of sexual minority asylum recognition in the UK

The United Kingdom’s acceptance of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) refugees has been heralded as a progressive shift in asylum law. Indeed, the scope for the protection of sexual minorities under the Refugee Convention has expanded. The interpretation of the Convention definition of refugee in Article 1A(2) has been continuously adapted, especially the “particular social group” (PSG) category as well as the recognised scope of “well-founded fear of being persecuted.” This thesis interrogates how “gay” refugees have been accepted under the Convention. The analysis considers the ways judicial decision-making has constructed the PSG and persecution of sexual minority asylum seekers. The sample consists of 22 appeals from 1999-2011 which were identified as major legal developments, beginning with the first significant recognition of “homosexual” refugees. Several additional tribunal determinations and key international cases are also considered. A socio-legal approach is taken to study the tensions between fluid sociological images of gender and sexuality and the fixed notions of identity found in the law (whether arising from individual cases, formal practice, or state imperatives). Through an examination of the legal discourse in the texts examined, the research deconstructs the jurisprudential debates in order to assess their impact on sexual minorities seeking asylum. This contextual, rather than doctrinal, approach reveals how the jurisprudence often obscures sociologically problematic assumptions made by adjudicators. This analysis offers an original contribution, concluding that UK protection is grounded on the assumption that sexual and gender identity are “immutable.” Far from opening the UK to persecuted sexual minorities, the prevalence of this assumption significantly narrows the apparently “inclusive” construct of the refugee. Building on the findings, the thesis proposes that adjudication should focus on the persecutory intent to suppress non-conforming acts and identities (or norm deviance) in order to identify sexual minority refugees rather than the categories of LGBT. Additionally, framing determination in the terms of relational autonomy develops a better understanding of the conditions necessary to realise a non-conforming sexual and gendered life free of persecution. The concept of norm deviance decentres the assumption of a knowable truth of identity, and relational autonomy asserts that the deprivation of self-determination and rights to relate may constitute a well-founded fear of persecution.

THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE CLIENT TREATMENT ORIENTATION SCALE

According to the American Psychological Association (2006), three components should be equally considered in treatment decision-making: empirical research, clinical judgment, and the client’s values and preference. Swift, Callahan, and Vollmer (2011) defined client preferences as specific attributes that are desired in a therapeutic setting and are divided into three categories: role, therapist, and treatment-type. Currently, there is no treatment orientation scale that measures treatment type and magnitude of the relationship. For this initial phase of development, 5 treatment orientations are being used as the basis of the Client Treatment Orientation Scale (CTOS): psychodynamic, existential, cognitive-behavioral therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, and multicultural. The purpose of this study is to begin development of a treatment orientation scale with 5-7 questions per subscale domain. A total sample of 651 participants completed the survey, was English speaking, and aged 18 or over, with the majority being male (n = 334, 51.3%). The mean age of participants was 31.91 (SD = 8.23), with an equal distribution of degree type (e.g. psychiatrist, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, and school psychology) with psychiatry the most endorsed at 26.6% (n = 173). Overall, results did not support the use of the CTOS in applied or research settings. Reliability analyses for the 5 subscales were: psychodynamic (α = .52), existential (α = .32), cognitive-behavioral therapy (α = .64), acceptance and commitment therapy (α = .46), and multicultural (α = .63). There were various limitations of the study, such as being self-report and the possibility of not being representative of the particular orientations being measured. Future research could re-examine items for latent variables or refine the current items for another factor analysis study.

Short-Term Tracking of Orientation with Inertial Sensors

In the past several years, IMU's have been widely used to measure the orientation of a moving body over a continuous period of time. Although, inertial navigation is a common approach for estimating the orientation, it greatly suffers from the accumulation of error in the orientation estimation. Most of the current common practices apply zero velocity update as a calibration method to address this problem and improve the estimation accuracy. However, this approach requires the sensors to be stationary frequently. This thesis introduces a novel method of calibration for estimating the elevation and bank angles of the orientation over a persistent human movement utilizing accelerometers and gyroscopes. The proposed technique incorporates the prior knowledge about the human motion to the estimation of the orientation to prevent the estimated position from growing unboundedly. The measurement model is designed to estimate the position for T seconds in the future. The knowledge of the estimated position for few seconds further in the future provides a feedback for orientation estimation during the periods of time when the accelerometer's readings are significantly deviated from gravity. This work evaluates the performance of the proposed method in two different ways: 1. a model of human movement is designed to generate synthetic data which resembles human motion. 2. an experimental design is implemented using a robot arm and an actual IMU to capture real data. The performance of the new technique is compared with the results from the inertial navigation approach. It is demonstrated that the new method significantly improves the accuracy of the orientation estimation.

The Influence of Demographics and Cultural Attitudes on Sexual Orientation Attitudes in African American Adults.

African Americans who identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender (GLBT) are discriminated against in the African American community. Sociodemographics such as income, education, age, and religion/spirituality have been shown to be associated with sexual prejudice. There is limited research on how African American cultural attitudes influence attitudes towards sexual orientation. The purpose of this study was to examine the extent to which demographic variables and African American cultural attitudes (measured by the African American Acculturation Scale-Revised; AAAS-R) predict attitudes toward sexual orientation in African American adults (measured by the Attitudes towards Lesbians and Gay Men Scale; ATLG). Social identity theory (SIT) was used to describe how group affiliation influences attitudes. A sample of African Americans who were 18 years or older (n = 236) completed the questionnaires online. Stepwise multiple regression analyses were conducted to examine the relative importance of demographics and cultural attitudes in predicting attitudes towards homosexuals and lesbians. The results of the study indicated that religious affiliation and religious beliefs and practices were statistically significant in predicting attitudes towards both homosexual and lesbian individuals. These findings suggest that individuals who identify as Christians and have stronger religious beliefs and practices are more likely to have negative attitudes towards lesbians and gay men. These results lend support to efforts to create programs to educate people about cultural misconceptions of the African American GLBT community and to encourage spiritual leaders to promote efforts support to them.

Development of a Clinical Nurse Leadership Orientation Program

Nurses are often promoted or hired into leadership positions without the benefit of a formal orientation to their new leadership positions. The challenge of navigating the various expectations of the role of clinical nurse leader (CNL) such as fiscal ownership, staffing patterns, payroll, and disciplinary action process can be overwhelming. The lack of a formalized orientation process and an identified nurse leader to function as a mentor can contribute to the novice CNL feeling unsupported and overwhelmed. The purpose of this project was to identify, develop, and evaluate a CNL orientation manual, outline, and program for newly appointed CNLs. The desired outcome for this doctor of nursing practice project was the education and preparation of CNLs who will navigate the various facets of the role and retain their positions longterm. The Association of Nurse Executives nurse leader model was used to guide the project. A panel of 5 CNL experts evaluated the manual outline and content using a 5-question Likert scale survey. Findings indicated 100% of the participants agreed or strongly agreed with the importance of the topics covered and 80% agreed with the content covered in the manual outline. The project is expected to promote positive social change by preparing new CNLs to meet the requirements of leadership positions.

Roles of Religious Orientation and Health Locus of Control in an Aging Population

An intrinsic religious orientation has been linked to improved cardiovascular health. Individuals may be protected by their beliefs against anger/hostility, which have been linked to increased cardiovascular reactivity and disease. Health locus of control differentiates between internals, who take responsibility for health, and externals, who attribute responsibility to chance or powerful others. Internal health locus of control has been linked to healthy behaviors, but its relationship to religious orientation is unclear. Intrinsically held religious beliefs and internally held expectancies for health may, through the mechanism of reactivity, reduce risk for cardiovascular disease. This study explored relationships among health locus of control, religious orientation, and cardiovascular reactivity to an interpersonal stressor in an older adult population. Intrinsic religiousness and internal health locus of control emerged as highly related potential buffers against anger/hostility and cardiovascular reactivity.

Freshman Orientation and Career Articulation with a Rational Value Decision-Making Model

Problem The purpose of this study was to identify, implement, and evaluate a program of counseling intervention which could be described as preventative or developmental as opposed to remedial. An important consideration was the possibility of intervening with the student, the student's primary or associational groups, or the institutional groups that influence his behavior. A program of freshman orientation and career articulation was identified through institutional research, a review of literature, and the work of a student steering committee. Method An experimental population of 100 and a control population of 100 were selected from the 1971-72 entering freshman class at Weber State College. The experimental subjects were assigned to small groups (9-15) with a group leader. The experimental groups were then processed through a set of behaviorally defined steps with the goal of personalizing orientation and enabling them to determine a feasible career choice. A programmed rational decision-making model was used as the mode for articulating the career choice and establishing long-range plans for achieving that goal. This model required participation throughout this quarter. The control subjects were processed through the traditional large group, auditorium orientation. This treatment consists of three sessions of some three to four hours in length. Various administrators present information on WSC policies and practices followed by a tour of the campus. Main Findings The experimental small group process was preferred much more than the large group process and allowed students to feel that their individual needs were better met. Students in this experimental group also reported their treatment to be much more "helpful", "useful", and "informative." The time spent with experimental subjects exceeded the time spent with control subjects by 3 to 1, yet the experimental subjects indicated that the time spent was "about right" while control subjects reported their presentations were "too long". Experimental subjects reported that they were better informed about college services and policies than were control subjects. Attitudes of general satisfaction with the college as a whole were not significantly improved by the experimental treatment. Experimental subjects reported substantial gains over the control subjects in deciding a major or confirming previous plans and attributed these gains to their small group work with the decision-making model. After the experimental subjects were processed through the decision model they reported that they were more certain of their choice of major than were the control subjects. At the end of two quarters no statistically significant differences were determined about retention of subjects although approximately 16% more of the experimental subjects were still enrolled. Conclusions The review of literature presented a generally dismal picture as to the potential good to be derived from any orientation program. It was indicated that at best it may serve as a public relations function. To the contrary, the data and experience from this study indicate that orientation may be much more meaningful to participants than previous evidence would indicate. Indeed, it is believed that the introduction of career selection through a rational, sound, and logical process probably strikes at the heart of what orientation could and possibly should be about.
