Why the ocean's near the shore

Hanson, Alexander James 01 May 2015 (has links)
The following pages are thoughts and ideas that go through my head when creating art that is intended to be seen, analyzed and somewhat understood by an audience. Though there are some aspects contained within that may touch directly on how I make sculpture on a practical and aesthetic level, my hope is that this document will function more as a work that will provide the reader with a sense of hope as it relates to art making, that while what we do as makers can often seem pointless, we must have some kind of faith that art can be useful, and we ought to try to make sense out of things if we can. If there is any reason at all why I continue to make things, beyond general foolishness or to prevent from being bored, it lies somewhere said or unsaid within this document. The title of this document, “Why the Ocean’s Near the Shore” comes from the song the Scarecrow sings in The Wizard of Oz “If I Only Had a Brain”, stating that if only he were smart enough he could tell Dorothy something meaningful like why this is the case; this may not be so impressive to someone with a brain, but for someone without, it is certainly profound.

Abrindo A Caixa Preta: uma leitura da sociedade israelense na década de 70 / Opening the Black Box: a reading society Israel in the 70

Schvartzman, Gabriel Steinberg 03 October 2000 (has links)
The israeli society has gone through some moves, specially on the seventies, that led to political and social changes. The author Amós Oz, a remarkable one in the country, has written in his fictional and non-fictional works about those innovations reflected in the country. This work intends to study the changes in the period above, as shown in the novel Kufsa Chhora (The Black Box) from Amós Oz. Therefore, these themes are here developed: The search for national identity, the confrontation between right and left in the israeli political system, the collecting of the simmilarities between the State, redefining its identity and the sionist movement, that is reshaping its objectives, once the State became a reality, the position of the israeli left wing and the conceptions of the pacifist group Shalom Achshav, the position of the israeli right wing and the militanty of the nacionalistic group Gush Emunim, the different immigratory waves to Israel before and after the proclamation of the State and the absorption of the different communities of immigrants, the beggining of ethnical conflicts among the several communities, which from the israeli social mosaic. We have, here, too, an analisis of the book Kufsa Chhora (The Black Box) showing how ethnical, religious and political conflicts reflect in Amós Ozs work, as well as an analisis of the characters and their behavior to show the liaison between fiction and reality in Israels routine.

Conflitos, medos e dores na literatura infanto-juvenil israelense: análise de obras selecionadas entre as décadas de 70 e 90 / Conflicts, fears and sorrows in Israeli children\'s and youth literature: analysis of works selected from the 70\'s to the 90\'s of the 20th century

Garcia, Claudia Regina Gama 05 November 2010 (has links)
Our aim is to investigate Israeli childrens and youth literature, especially in some works selected from the 70s to the 90s of the 20th century. In this study, we intend to observe how the concepts of mimesis and verisimilitude are presented in these works by means of analyses regarding both the fictional representation and the historical veracity. Our research is focused on the question of the conflicts, fears and sorrows that pervade Israeli childrens and youth literature, which are the aspects that motivate our study. Based on the theoretical analyses carried out, we identify these issues and present some reflections for the discussion on the nature of our theme and its development. The works analyzed are Sumchi (1978) and A panther in the basement (1995), both by Amós Oz, and The monster in the darkness (1976), by Uri Orlev. Through the description and comprehension of the conflicts, fears and sorrows in the works mentioned, our study may contribute to the scientific inquiry on Israeli childrens and youth literature.

An American Tale: Incarnations of the Wizard of Oz and the Negotiation of Identity, Race, and Gender, in Popular Culture

Orshan, Carly A 13 July 2012 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to address the way in which several quite varied and often commodified representations of L. Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1900) express and reproduce shifting notions of national identity within American culture across the twentieth century and at the beginning of our own. This thesis pursues the question of national identity that the American myth perpetuates throughout the twentieth century and examines the shift in citizenship through representations found in popular culture’s re-writings of the Wizard of Oz tale. This thesis evaluates both original and contemporary adaptations of the Oz story and their deconstruction for sociohistorical representations of racial, gendered, class, and national identity. I argue, that the numerous historical and ideological comparisons from the Oz tale reflect our own world in our discussions of identity, race, class, and gender and have become significant reflections of our own imaginations and national identity.

Gaze Assisted Ergonomics : Means of expediting computer usage for the physically impaired / Ögonassisterad ergonomi : Medel för att möjliggöra datoranvändning för rörelsehindrade

Cicek, Simon January 2014 (has links)
The degree project explores the interaction between computers and users who, due to physical impairments are unable to use computer mice and/or keyboards. The users are given alternative means of input, namely eye tracking and speech recognition. The interactions are studied using experiments that are based on the Wizard of Oz-method.The project also includes development of a framework used during the experiments and interfaces that are based on the results of the experiments. It is shown that eye tracking and speech recognition has the potential to allow a user full and efficient usage of a computer, without the need for a computer mouse or keyboard.

Methods: Sixty male Wistar rats (180-220 g), distributed in 8 experimental groups (N = 8 / group) were used. For corticosteroid therapy (groups II, IV, VI and VIII), the animals received dexamethasone (1 mg / kg; i.p.), one injection every 48 h, starting two weeks before the surgical procedures, extending to euthanasia. Control animals (groups I, III, V and VII) received saline solution (10 ml / kg, i.p.) at the same time intervals. After two weeks of corticosteroid therapy, the animals were anesthetized with ketamine and xylazine (100 and 10 mg / kg, i.p.) to produce two critical defects in the parietal bones of the skull cap (5 mm diameter). The defects were filled with clot (groups I, II, V and VI) or Bio-Oss x xenograft (Geistlish Biomaterials, Germany) (groups III, IV, VII and VIII). In all groups, the right defect was covered by a Bio-Gide? collagen membrane (Geistlish Biomaterials, Germany). For systemic ozono-therapy, animals of groups V, VI, VII and VIII received an application of ozone (0.7 mg / kg, i.p.) every day for 7 days, starting immediately after surgery. Four weeks after the defects were created, the animals were euthanized, and the skull caps were collected for histological evaluation of the bone neoformation with hematoxylin and eosin (HE) staining. The protocols were approved by the Ethics Committee on the Use of Animals (7691). Qualitative histological analyzes were performed based on the pattern of connective tissue formation around the defect, existence of inflammatory cells in the region, aspect of bone trabeculated, osteoblastic activity around the bone matrix and existence of graft particles in the region. Results: Groups V and VII presented greater bone areas along the surface of the defect compared to VI and VIII, because of the potential effects of ozone on bone remodeling, minimizing negative interference in the glucocorticoid bone microarray. The presence of the xenografts groups III, IV, VII, VIII, provided the covering of an extensive area of the defect, forming a more prominent immature bone matrix near the edges of the defects, with the presence of graft particles dispersed in the central area. The presence of the type I collagen membrane was shown to be an important tool in the acceleration of bone remodeling used in all experimental groups, in which, in comparison to contralateral defects in which the membrane was not used, a significant increase of bone just graduated. At the systemic level, the results of ozone treatment allowed the reduction of adverse effects of glucocorticoids, such as the reduction of the body weight of the animals and atrophy of lymphatic organs such as spleen, observed in the groups treated alone with dexamethasone. Conclusion: Given the limitations of the animal study, the use of systemic ozone associated with the xenograft stimulates bone remodeling in critical defects of immunosuppressed rats.
