Variable-density groundwater flow beneath the wind-tidal flats of Padre Island

Field evidence for density-driven free convection, a potentially important groundwater transport process, has been examined at Padre Island National Seashore to determine if this phenomenon can develop under natural environmental conditions. Hitherto, this process had not been conclusively detected or measured in field scale hydrogeology. Field methods, including nested monitoring wells and time-lapse 3-D resistivity surveys, reveal evidence of variable-density groundwater flow in the wind-tidal flats. Evaporative concentration of groundwater near the water table resulted in unstable inverted density gradients, reduced groundwater levels, and reduced hydraulic gradients. These factors allowed plumes of dense fluid to migrate downward into less dense fluid which were observed in monitoring wells and 3-D resistivity surveys. This shows that the development and flow of variable-density fluids in groundwater can be detected and monitored through field techniques. It demonstrates that the development of density inversions may overcome the dissipating forces of dispersion and diffusion to create a sufficiently large unstable gradient to induce free convection. / text

Deposition and stratification of oblique dunes, South Padre Island, Texas

Oblique dunes have orientations that are intermediate between those of transverse and longitudinal dunes. The oblique dunes studied are reversing dunes which undergo no net annual migration when associated with normal meteorological patterns. From April 1980 through September 1980, the dunes migrated up to 65 feet (19.8 m) northwestward under the influence of prevailing onshore winds. High velocity northerly winds (November 1980 through February 1981), associated with the passage of winter frontal systems, caused the dunes to rapidly migrate 65 feet (19.8 m) southward. Volumes of sand transported by these strong winds were commonly reduced by accompanying rainfall. In October 1980 and March 1981 neither wind direction was dominant, and frequent changes in wind direction caused many of the dunes to become flattened. Hurricanes, which strike the area in late summer, have had no lasting effects on the dunes. Three major stratification types were observed in trenches and on etched surfaces. Translatent strata were deposited by wind ripples; grainfall deposits accumulated when saltating grains settled on leeward slopes of the dunes, and grainflow cross-strata were developed by avalanching on leeward slopes. Preservation of these stratification types occurred in zones of net deposition, predominantly leeward of the dune crests. Strata deposited during the summer wind regime dip northeast, whereas the winter strata dip in a southerly direction. The winter deposits are best preserved in the central cores of the dunes. This suggests that either the high velocity winds of the initial winter frontal systems destroy large volumes of the summer deposits, or that the dunes migrate southward, under the influence of dry northerly winds, during droughts. Oblique dune deposits should be difficult to discern in the rock record, because they may contain aspects of either transverse or longitudinal dunes. It is likely that some ancient oblique dunes have been mistakenly described as other dune types in the literature. / text

O padre Antônio Vieira é uma figura icônica do Barroco literário no Brasil do século XVII, visto por muitos como um dos grandes representantes da Companhia de Jesus. A presente tese busca contemplar um tema recorrente na historiografia jesuítica brasileira que trata do papel desempenhado pelos jesuítas na tentativa de construção de uma terrena cidade celeste segundo Neves, no novo mundo (Brasil colônia) e, particularmente, das práticas sociais (sobretudo, políticas, religiosas, ideológicas, jurídicas) do padre Antônio Vieira suas implicações e rupturas no Maranhão seiscentista sob o olhar do imaginário social. Através de três sermões proferidos no Maranhão, pretendemos analisar e dialogar sobre as imagens mais recorrentes na produção sermonística do Padre Antônio Vieira: como nosso objeto de pesquisa também é a produção imagética do sujeito Vieira, utilizamos como referencial teórico a noção ideológica de sujeito de Mikhail Bakhthin, as noções do Imaginário de Gilbert Durand e Gaston Bachelard, as teorias sobre o Imaginário Social jesuítico do antropólogo e pesquisador Luiz Felipe Baêta Neves e outros grandes teóricos, para nos ajudar a analisar essas imagens. This thesis seeks to contemplate a recurring theme in the Brazilian Jesuit historiography that focuses on the role played by the Jesuits in an attempt to build "a heavenly city on earth" (NEVES, 2003) in the new world (Brazil colony) and particularly of social practices (above all, political, religious, ideological, legal) of the priest Antonio Vieira - their implications and breaks in the seventeenth century Maranhão - under the gaze of the social imaginary. Through three sermons published with greater impact, in Maranhão seventeenth century, we aim to analyze and talk about the most recurrent images in the production sermons of the priest Antonio Vieira and because our object is to produce imagery of the "subject" Vieira also used as a theoretical notion of ideological "subject" of Mikhail Bakhthin, the notions of the Imaginary by Gilbert Durand and Gaston Bachelard, theories on the Social Imaginary Jesuit anthropologist and researcher Luiz Felipe Baêta Neves and other great theorists to help us to analyze these images. The research began with a brief history of the Freemasonry, which revealed its first ever known educational experience: a school for girls in England. Then a profile of the Freemasonry was built mainly from the central ideas about the teaching they conducted, which gained the interest of the eighteenth century media and therefore also gained print. Another factor that contributed to constructing this profile were the propositions made by Rui Barbosa, which were weighed against the Masonic ideal in Brazil at the time. Finally, Padre Azevedo School was analysed. This school was founded in João Pessoa in 1957, marking the presence of the Freemasonry on education in the state of Paraíba. The school founded and maintained partly by the Masonry, partly by public entities and private donations was studied through thorough readings of the Masonic Lodge´s session records that enabled discussions around the school routines yielded within the Lodge to be gathered. / O presente trabalho tem como objeto de estudo a temática das interfaces entre a história da Maçonaria e suas ações e preceitos acerca da educação. Iniciamos com um breve histórico da Maçonaria indicando a primeira experiência educacional que se tem notícia uma escola para meninas na Inglaterra; em seguida traçamos o perfil da Maçonaria no Brasil tendo como foco central as ideias sobre instrução, veiculadas pela imprensa oitocentista, e as propostas educacionais elaboradas por Rui Barbosa com as possíveis articulações com o ideário maçônico no Brasil. Por fim, analisamos a Escola Padre Azevedo, criada em João Pessoa, em 1957, como uma espécie de modelo paraibano de atuação da Maçonaria na educação. A Escola fundada e mantida pela Maçonaria, por entidades públicas e por doações de particulares foi estudada por meio da leitura das atas das sessões da Loja Maçônica que nos permitiram apreender as discussões engendradas dentro da Loja acerca do cotidiano escolar.

FundaÃÃo Cearense de Apoio ao Desenvolvimento Cientifico e TecnolÃgico / Esta tese foca os domÃnios da devoÃÃo e da diversÃo em romarias neste inÃcio de sÃculo, considerando o processo de hierarquizaÃÃo de sentidos. A partir de contextos de interaÃÃes proporcionadas durante as romarias a Juazeiro do Norte, no CearÃ, o estudo indaga as perspectivas de continuidade e mudanÃa no conteÃdo das prÃticas romeiras. Entre as possibilidades de anÃlise dos fluxos religiosos nas CiÃncias Sociais, sÃo tomadas como escopo as noÃÃes de peregrinaÃÃo, turismo e festa como matrizes interpretativas das romarias alinhavando-as a narraÃÃes de experiÃncias dos participantes. Hà uma preocupaÃÃo no trabalho em demonstrar como as relaÃÃes entre o lugar, os eventos e as pessoas nas romarias, se constituem elementos indissociÃveis na compreensÃo do fenÃmeno. O conjunto das representaÃÃes que circulam sobre a romaria entre os seus participantes à apresentado atravÃs de dados produzidos com entrevistas, inquÃritos e observaÃÃo. A anÃlise abrange a identificaÃÃo das prÃticas tidas como legÃtimas das romarias, considerando as relaÃÃes entre o mito fundador, a cidade e os romeiros; e os elementos que apontam para novas significaÃÃes. Os resultados demonstram que embora as romarias tenham agregado ao longo do tempo outros sentidos alÃm do religioso, seu principal aspecto remissivo continua relacionado a instituiÃÃo do sagrado que se diferencia de outros repertÃrios simbÃlicos formais aos quais os praticantes recorrem quando querem marcar fronteiras internas de pertencimento. No universo dos indivÃduos que se classificam como romeiros em Juazeiro do Norte, a pesquisa aponta aspectos que indicam mudanÃas e permanÃncias nas prÃticas romeiras tradicionais. AlÃm disso, hà a constituiÃÃo de espaÃos diferenciados para atender a demanda de sociabilidade e diversÃo entre os participantes e suas implicaÃÃes na ressignificaÃÃo das romarias. / This thesis brings into focus devotion and diversion as seen in pilgrimages in the current century, taking into consideration the process related to the hierarchy of meanings. Beginning with interacting contexts found at pilgrimage scenario in Juazeiro do Norte, CearÃ, this study questions perspective for continuity and change within pilgrimage practices. Among possibilities related to analysis of religious movements by the Social Sciences, notions about tourism and festivity are taken as models for interpretation of pilgrimages attaching them to narratives of experiences by participants. There is a concern in this work to demonstrate how relations among place, events and people involved in the pilgrimages are bound into indissociable elements for apprehension of the phenomenon. The bulk of representations that circulate among participants of the pilgrimage is presented by means of data collected from interviews, questionings and observations. Analysis encompasses identification of practices taken as legitimate values for pilgrimages, taking into consideration relations among the founding myth, the city and the pilgrims, and elements that point to new meanings. The upshot demonstrates that in spite of accumulating through the years other meanings besides the religious one, pilgrimages maintain their major remissive aspect, namely, relating themselves to the institution of the sacred which differentiate them from other formal symbolic repertoires to which participants turn when they desire to demarcate internal limits of belonging. Within the universe of individuals who qualify as pilgrims of Juazeiro do Norte the research points to aspects that indicate change and continuity encompassing traditional practices of pilgrimages. Besides, there is formation of different spaces in order to serve a demand of sociability and diversion among participants and their contribution to re-signify pilgrimages.

Après le séisme de l'Irpinia le 23 novembre 1980, un regain de dévotion mariale s'est vérifié dans plusieurs localités de la Campanie. Notre travail souhaite évoquer le lien entre la catastrophe naturelle et les apparitions mariales de deux localités de la Campanie : Casavatore et Oliveto Citra. Si ces deux événements surnaturels n'ont pas donné lieu à une reconnaissance durable et par voie de conséquence à des pèlerinages pérennes, il en va autrement pour le culte dédié à Padre Pio (1887-1968) qui génère un engouement dévotionnel sans cesse croissant à San Giovanni Rotondo. Notre travail veut démontrer, à travers d'autres exemples de dévotion mariale comme le culte de la Vierge au Rosaire crée à la fin du XIXe par Bartolo Longo au coeur de la Nuova Pompei, que les supports médiatiques traditionnels, associés aux inventions technologiques sont les instruments garantissant la continuité d'un culte. / After the Irpinia earthquake of November 23rd, 1980, a revival of the Marian devotion was discovered in several localities of Campania. Our work aims to establish the link between the natural disaster and the Marian appearances in two localities of Campania: Casavatore and Oliveto Citra. If those two "acts of God" did not lead to a lasting recognition and thus, to perennial pilgrimages, the same cannot be said with respect to the cult dedicated to Pio of Pietrelcina (1887-1968) that has given rise to a continuously growing devotional enthusiasm in San Giovanni Rotondo. Our work means to demonstrate, through other examples of Marian devotion such as the cult of Our Lady of the Rosary?created at the end of the XIX century by Bartolo Longo at the heart of Nueva Pompeya?that traditional forms of media, associated with technological inventions, are the instruments guaranteeing the continuity of a cult

Portugal e messianismo no advento da modernidade: um estudo a partir dos escritos políticos do Padre Antônio Vieira

Padre Antônio Vieira é considerado um dos personagens mais importantes da história de Portugal, bem como do Brasil, por sua participação como missionário da Companhia de Jesus. Sendo assim, a presente pesquisa tem como tema o Messianismo como chave de interpretação da representação de Portugal nos Escritos Políticos de Vieira. O objetivo é analisar suas interpretações proféticas sobre o futuro do reino que estariam fundamentadas em uma tradição que se estabelecera, pelo menos, por volta do século XVI e que sofrera diversas influências e interpretações. Para alcançar os objetivos propostos, pretendemos utilizar dois tipos de fontes. A primeira delas refere-se aos escritos políticos do Padre Antônio Vieira. Serão analisados sermões como o de São Sebastião, de São José, Bom Sucesso das Armas de Portugal contra as de Holanda e dos Bons Anos. Para dar sustentação às informações conseguidas durante o trabalho, utilizaremos informações contidas nos principais livros escritos por especialistas no assunto, capazes de fornecer dados atuais e relevantes relacionados ao tema. Sendo assim, são consultados autores com reconhecida contribuição no que se refere à temática da pesquisa. / Priest Antônio Vieira is considered one of the most important personages in the history of Portugal, as well as Brazil, for his participation as a missionary of the Society of Jesus. Thus, the present research has as its theme Messianism as key to the interpretation of Portugal's representation in Vieira's Political Writings. The purpose is to analyze his prophetic interpretations of the future of the kingdom that would be based on a tradition that had established itself at least around the sixteenth century and had undergone various influences and interpretations. To achieve the proposed objectives, we intend to use two types of sources. The first of these refers to the political writings of Father Antônio Vieira. Sermons such as Saint Sebastian, Saint Joseph, Bom Sucesso das Armas de Portugal and those of Holland and the Good Years will be analyzed. In order to support the information obtained during the work, we will use information contained in the main books written by experts in the subject, capable of providing current and relevant data related to the subject. Therefore, authors with a recognized contribution are consulted regarding the research topic.

Impacts of Oil and Gas Development on Wintering Grassland Birds at Padre Island National Seashore, Texas

Padre Island National Seashore provides important habitat for wintering grassland birds, which are declining throughout their breeding range, yet oil and gas development is widespread in the park. My objective was to evaluate the effects of resource extraction on the park's grassland birds and make management recommendations based on my findings. In January-March 2007 and 2008, I surveyed 5 active, 4 abandoned, and 4 road sites to investigate the relationship between distance from disturbance (well pads, access roads) and bird abundance. I also compared abundance among the 3 site types. At each site I recorded bird numbers and species in 10-m distance bands along all transects (4 transects/well, 2 transects/road), each extending 300 m from the road or pad. At road sites bird abundance was positively correlated with increased distance from road edge, but I found no linear relationship at active or abandoned well sites. However, mean bird abundance in the first (0-30-m) distance interval of active well transects was less than half that at the second interval, and was the lowest value for all active intervals except the ninth. First-interval abundance at active wells was lower than abundance at any abandoned well interval. Road transects likewise showed low abundance in the initial interval, although unlike at active wells abundance increased steadily with distance from the center of disturbance. This trend of lower overall numbers at the first interval of active well transects was driven largely by 1 species, the meadowlark. A combination of high noise levels near active well pads (up to 80 dB) and lack of tall vegetation (on average 30% lower than the 60-90-m interval) from which to sing may have contributed to low numbers of meadowlarks, which were the only birds to sing regularly during my study period. While most birds appear to be minimally affected by resource extraction at Padre Island, to ensure minimal impacts on sensitive species I recommend: 1) reducing noise at active sites, 2) limiting disturbance to vegetation near pads and roads, 3) maintaining existing perch sites, 4) restoring all vegetation to its pre-extraction condition, 5) limiting road construction.
