Příprava a charakterizace tenkých vrstev nízkomolekulárních materiálů pro organickou fotoniku / Deposition and characterization of low molecular thin films for organic photonics

Omasta, Lukáš January 2013 (has links)
This diploma thesis is focused on characterization of properties of new organic materials with respect to its potential application in organic photonics. The theoretical part contains a themed literature research on low molecular thin films for organic photonics, mainly phthalocyanines together with description and structure of the photovoltaic energy conversion. The practical part includes the preparation of thin layers of selected organic materials for organic photonics. Prepared thin films were characterized by optical methods and current voltage characteristics. Based on these results, the thin films and structure of solar cells were optimalized. Acquired data were used to determine the materials and structures suitable for photonics applications.

Robust TCO’s for CIGS solar cells based on indium tin oxide

Nilsson, Julia January 2022 (has links)
The increasing energy demand, combined with the use of harmful non-renewable energy sources calls for the search of alternative methods to cover our energy need.Renewable energy can be harvested in different ways, through the movement of wind and water, biomass, or directly from the rays of the sun, as in the case of photovoltaic (PV) devices. Whilst crystalline silicon (c-Si) is the most common absorber used for solar cells, other technologies are emerging. Solar cells with copper indium gallium diselenide (CIGS) as an absorber have the possibility of being flexible, which is an advantage due to the many more application possibilities that appear compared to the rigid and heavy c-Si solar cells. CIGS solar cells have some long-term stability issues, especially regarding ingression of atmospheric species through the front contact layer. This calls for further research in the front contact of the CIGS solar cell, exploring alternative materials to prevent degradation. The front contact of a solar cell must be both optically transparent and conduct electricity. Transparent conductive oxides (TCO) are materials characterized by the ability to conduct electricity, while also possessing a certain degree of optical transparency. The combination of conductivity and transparency makes TCOs ideal as front contacts in solar cells. A very common TCO for front contacts in CIGS solar cells is aluminum-doped zinc oxide (AZO) due to its low cost, good electrical conductivity and optical transparency. Because of its low resistance to degradation in humid environments more robust TCO alternatives, such as indium-doped tin oxide (ITO), are being investigated. Indium-doped tin oxide possesses similar electrical and optical properties as AZO, but better stability in humid environments. The ITO was deposited through RF magnetron sputtering, on a glass substrate to be able to measure optical properties. Initially, experiments focusing on oxygen content in the deposition atmosphere were done, together with a reproducibility experiment. This gave useful information about sputtering parameters and stability of the deposition. Thereon, an experiment was done varying three parameters: oxygen content in deposition atmosphere, sputtering power and temperature of substrate. A statistical software was used to analyze the data, identifying the effects of the changing parameters. The best performing samples were made with an oxygen content of 0,4-0,6 vol%. A high sensibility for oxygen in the system was also observed, as a result of the initial reproducibility experiments. This led to the introduction of a sacrificial deposition step after the machine had been shut down. Optimal substrate temperature was around 150°Cand it was not possible to go higher due to sensibility of the underlying solar cell layers.A lower threshold for the film thickness, located somewhere between 125 and 175 nm, was observed. Films with thickness below this threshold experienced a large resistivityincrease. Further depositions with higher oxygen content are advised to see if the properties of the films further improve.

PVMirror – A High-Efficiency Solar Module

Hyatt, Justin, Mrkonich, Jeffrey, Reinhart, Lennon, Taylor, Wyatt 24 February 2016 (has links)
Poster exhibited at GPSC Student Showcase, February 24th, 2016, University of Arizona. / To make photovoltaics (PV) and concentrated solar thermal power (CSP) more practical forms of alternative energy, creative innovations to current solar energy methods must be employed. The PVMirror – a new technology – is our solution to that problem. The PVMirror combines PV and CSP technologies by splitting the spectrum of sunlight using a dichroic mirror film. Light that is not transmitted to the solar cell is to instead be reflected to a focus, by way of a curved mirror. This hybrid of technologies is competitive, as it is both efficient and affordable compared to many other innovations in renewable energy. The PVMirror is designed to be an easy and cost-effective replacement to the reflectors used in existing CSP plants. Ultimately, we hope to demonstrate this PVMirror technology on a large scale and market it. As validated from interviewing with industry professionals, this technology has the potential to impact the world of solar energy because many industrial companies and utility-scale CSP project developers are interested in pairing CSP and PV to increase efficiency. Currently, using an outdoor sun tracker, we are testing an 18 inch by 18 inch prototype with four solar cells.

Lead oxides for photovoltaics

Droessler, Laura Melanie January 2014 (has links)
This thesis investigates lead oxides as photovoltaic materials. Vacuum deposition methods and ex-situ annealing are used to produce different stoichiometries of lead oxide. The relationship between structure and the optoelectronic properties is then investigated. Following this, a number of photovoltaic devices are prototyped and a Kelvin probe used to determine and understand the band structure of devices. Thin films of PbO produced via air annealing of thermally evaporated lead consist of a mixture of two phases, orthorhombic and tetragonal, that determine the materials properties and effectiveness as absorber layer in a Schottky device. Films of higher tetragonal content are more photoactive, showing lower series resistance. Kelvin probe reveals that with an increasing work function of the PbO with increasing duration of the annealing, the Schottky barrier between PbO and Al increases, which results in a higher VOC. This trend is inverted when the Fermi level of PbO drops below that of ITO, creating an opposing junction. Reactively sputtered PbO2 films are highly conductive degenerate semiconductors. Increasing oxygen flow rate during deposition leads to increased resistivity and decreased mobility, resulting from a decrease in grain size. Alongside this an increase in carrier concentration is observed as the material gets less ordered at higher oxygen flow rates, which results in an increase in Fermi level. Due to its high conductivity the material is not photoactive, and the high work function between -5.6 and -5.8 eV does not allow the formation of a Schottky junction or a p-n junction with the evaporated p- type PbO. Post deposition annealing of the sputtered films leads to the formation of the more resistive Pb3O4 phase. This material shows lower carrier concentration and mobility, however, work functions are similarly high. The changes induced by the heat treatment are not substantial enough to be able to create a junction between the as-deposited and the annealed material, as is revealed by Kelvin probe and Hall Effect measurements. Heterojunctions between P3HT and Pb3O4 were made to test predictions made by KP measurements. A heat treatment on P3HT improved its electronic properties and raised the Fermi level, resulting in the transformation of a diode in to a photovoltaic device and a decrease in dark current.

Three-dimensional device structures for photovoltaic applications

Urban, H. January 2013 (has links)
Harnessing solar energy has become a promising clean and renewable energy source alternative to fossil fuels since the development of low-cost dye sensitized solar cells (DSSC) and organic photovoltaic solar cell devices. Their power-conversion efficiencies, below 13% and 9% respectively, still limit the economic viability of these technologies. The geometry and optical properties of photonic crystals can be used to improve the absorption and charge collection efficiencies of these devices. This thesis describes the fabrication of TiO2 DSSC and ZnO-polymer solar cell devices based on a three-dimensional photonic crystal structure. Photonic crystal polymer structures were produced by holographic lithography and thermally stabilized in order to be used as templates for atomic layer deposition (ALD) of various metal oxides. For this purpose, an ALD apparatus was built and ALD processes for the growth of TiO2, ZnO, Al2O3, ZnO:Al, and Zr3N4 were established and deposited on photonic crystal templates. After ALD, the template was removed by calcination at 500°C, at which ZnO:Al films lost their conductivity of 250 S/cm preventing their use as transparent conducting oxide (TCO) electrodes. The produced 90 nm TiO2 photonic crystal shell DSSC and TiO2 inverse replica devices based on the dye N-719 and iodine/iodide redox electrolyte provided power-conversion efficiencies of 0.9% and 0.49% respectively and their diffusion lengths were 2× and 3× longer than that of a nanocrystalline reference device respectively. ZnO-polymer devices, comprising a P3HT layer as absorber and PEDOT:PSS film as hole-transporter, were also investigated.

Designing Anthradithiophene Derivatives Suitable For Applications in Organic Electronics and Optoelectronics

Hallani, Rawad Kamal 01 January 2015 (has links)
Anthradithiophene (ADT) derivatives have proven to be a front-runner in the world of small molecule semiconductors for organic electronics and optoelectronics. This is mainly due to the improved stability, easy tuning of chemical and physical properties, and impressive device performance that these molecules possess, especially in organic field effect transistors (OFET) and organic photovoltaics (OPV). The second chapter of this dissertation shows that reducing the amount of alkylsilylethynyl groups, used for functionalizing and solubilizing the ADT backbone, does alter the chemical, physical and crystallographic properties of ADTs. These changes offer the opportunity to study and observe different intermolecular interactions as well as monitoring their influence on sulfur scrambling in solid state. Additionally, from the early days ADTs and functionalized ADTs have been synthesized as isomeric mixtures. In chapter three, I demonstrate a new and simple method that can separate the syn and anti isomers of the F-TES-ADT and F-TEG-ADT chromatographically. The effects of isomeric purity on crystal packing and field effect transistor performance were studied extensively. Chapter four of this dissertation reveals a new generation of acceptor (electron poor) ADT derivatives obtained by attaching cyanide as electron withdrawing group (EWG) to the ADT chromophore. An extensive study was conducted on CN-ADT (acceptor) molecules in small molecule (F-TES-ADT) donor/ small molecule (CN-ADT) acceptor binary BHJ blends as well as P3HT/CN-ADT/PCBM ternary BHJ blends. Photophysical studies of the Donor/ acceptor blends (interface, domains, and crystal orientation) were conducted to obtain a better understanding of the film morphology and its effect on solar cell performance. Finally, the last part of the dissertation, Chapter five, focus on studying singlet fission in ADT derivatives, as well as the effect of varying the size of the alkylsilylethynyl functional group (used for solubilizing the ADT backbone) on altering the electronic couplings and how can that potentially affect the singlet fission rate in these molecules. We also tried to inspect the extent of the correlation between long-range order in crystal packing and singlet fission by monitoring singlet fission rate and efficiency for ADT derivatives with different thin film morphologies.

Nilsson, Sanna January 2016 (has links)
Generation of electricity by use of solar irradiation is today a very small part of the total electricity generation in Sweden. It is not necessary to build a great amount of solar parks all over Sweden to reach a higher level, it could instead be possible by using already existing rooftops. That is one of the situations that indicates the need of a greater knowledge dissemination, about today’s energysystem and the technology of photovoltaics. It also exists a demand of knowledge about characteristic Swedish houses and rooftops. To convert the different kinds of rooftops to small powersources, there is also a demand of knowledge about installations that is possible to do with different kinds of photovoltaics. Although, solar power alone cannot compete with fossil fuels, but it should have a good possibility to reach a much higher level than what exists today. Wallenstam AB is anenergy-conscious company within the real estate business in Gothenburg. Their interests in renewable energy and their ambition to replace fossil fuel with more environment-friendly technology facilitated this cooperation. The first part of the report aims to get more and deeper knowledge about the subject photovoltaics and solar plants. The second part of the report aims to investigate what possibilities and impediments there is with photovoltaic installations at different kinds of typical Swedish houses. A planning work is made at three different types of buildings in the area of Gothenburg. One at an industry/office space, one at a modern apartment block and one at a central building in Gothenburg that has both apartments and commercialized activity. The goal is to find the most suitable photovoltaic installation to each of the three buildings, based on economic advantageousness, appearance and esthetic, and the possibilities with the technology of earlier installed energy systems. The report and the result are formed on the basis of literature studies, site visits at the buildings, measurements at drawings and satellite maps, calculations by hand and modelling in the software PVsyst. Many discussions with people in the solar energy industry were also held. To calculate the Levelized Cost Of Energy (LCOE) and to perform the sensitivity analysis, a web-based calculator was used. The web-based calculator belongs to the report El från nya och framtida anläggningar 2014. The main result shows that only two of the possible photovoltaic installations gets a LCOE that is competitive relative the comparative electricity price at 0,75 SEK/kWh. Installations with polycrystalline solar panels at Kvillebäcken 3:1 and Mölnlycke 1:1. The result also shows that the two installations with polycrystalline solar panels at Kvillebäcken 3:1 and Mölnlycke Fabriker is really competitive if the capital interest rate is reduced from 4 % to 2 %, or if the investment cost isreduced by 15 %. At the property Inom Vallgraven 26:8, the LCOE for all possible installations are over one Swedish krona per kilowatt hour, but an installation with solar panels at a central building like that could have a marketing value. It would also show Wallenstams standpoint for renewable energy, new technology and a sustainable energy system.

Τάντης, Ιωσήφ 14 October 2013 (has links)
Organic photovoltaic (OPV) devices present an attractive solution for solar energy applications due to their inherently low material costs, mechanical flexibility, and the potential of scalability to large area, light weight, devices. The most efficient electron accepting materials used so far in OPVs are based on modified fullerenes. However, further improvement is needed in order to achieve more efficient transport of the separated charges to the respective electrodes. Attempts to this direction have been made either by influencing the miscibility between the donor and acceptor phases or by the development of more efficient electron donor or electron acceptor materials. New hybrid materials comprising of fullerene can been used to tune the semiconducting properties of polymers. Since polyquinolines are one of the most promising classes of electron-transporting and electron-accepting polymers for use in various optoelectronic applications their combination with C60 is expected to provide a route for the modulation of their optical, morphological as well as their electronic properties. Previous work has shown that the modification of polyquinolines towards lower LUMO values will increase their electron accepting properties. In this work the electronic properties of various materials that correspond to the sequential synthesis steps of a novel hybrid copolymeric acceptor are investigated by x-ray and UV photoelectron spectroscopies (XPS/UPS). The hybrid material under investigation is the newly synthesised poly-perfluorophenylquinoline(P5FQ-C60) hybridised with C60. The perfluorophenylquinoline monomer (P5FQ, Fig1a), C60 on its own and the hybrid P5FQ-C60 are also studied. The hybrid copolymers P3OT-co-P5FQ and P3OT-co- (P5FQ-N-C60) with a ratio of 1:10 are also studied for use as electron acceptors to confer better miscibility with the donor. For the spectroscopic investigation the samples were deposited on Si substrates by spin coating from toluene,THF or chloroform solutions. The measurements were carried out in an ultrahigh vacuum analysis chamber (base pressure 5x10-9 mbar) equipped with a hemispherical electron energy analyzer, a twin anode X-ray source for XPS and a discharge UV lamp for UPS. The XPS F1s photo-peak from the non hybrid samples appeared at binding energy (BE) 688.3 eV, a value that corresponds to fluorine atoms in C-F bonds. The same peak was shifted to lower binding energy in the case of all hybrid materials. Despite the fact that the F1s peak has a measurable signal, the C1s component corresponding to C-F bonds (BE=289.4 eV) appeared to be at noise level for all the materials under investigation. This is attributed to the fact that the photoionization cross section of C1s is about four times lower than that for F1s. From the UP spectra the Highest Occupied Molecular Orbital (HOMO) with respect to the Fermi Level and the high binding energy (HBE) cut off can be measured. From the latter the work function of the material is calculated, while the sum of the work function and the binding energy of HOMO correspond to the Ionization Potential (IP). This is a useful parameter for the characterization of semiconducting polymers because it corresponds to the distance between the HOMO and the vacuum level and in combination with band gap (Eg) values can be used for the calculation of the Electron Affinity or in other words the Lowest Unoccupied Molecular Orbital (LUMO) position. The results demonstrate that the semiconducting properties of polymeric or monomeric materials can be effectively tuned by hybridization with carbon based nanostructures, in this case C60.
