Mechanical behaviour and corrosion of interstitial-free steel-aluminium alloy self-piercing riveted joints

The overall aim of the project is to examine the rivetability of new steels and to investigate the mechanical behaviour of self-piercing riveted (SPR) aluminium-steel hybrid structures for automotive applications. Interstitial Free Steel (I.F.) of 1.2 mm thickness was joined to Aluminium 5754 of 2 mm thickness and Aluminium 5182 (coated and uncoated) of 1.5 mm thickness. The work began by initially conducting a quality assessment of the various joints that were produced in order to establish the optimum conditions for joining the various sample combinations to be investigated. A relationship was established between the head height and the interlock distance on the one hand and between the interlock distance and the lap shear strength of samples. It was also established that for higher lap shear strength, it is preferable to use the stronger material (I.F. steel) as the pierced sheet and the weaker material (5182) as the locked sheet. However, the results showed that this rule could not be applied for predicting the fatigue behaviour of SPR joints between I.F. steel and 5182. An investigation of the fatigue failure mechanisms was undertaken and possible reasons for this behaviour are discussed. The influence of fretting was also investigated by using scanning electron microscopy and reported. The fatigue behaviour of Dual Phase (DP600 + 5182) SPR joints was investigated. It was observed that the position of fatigue crack initiation differed with the maximum applied load. An explanation for this observation was provided by considering the failure mechanism of the samples under different load levels. The study also showed how fretting led to the initiation of fatigue cracks. The corrosion behaviour of (I.F. steel + 5182) samples was investigated by conducting tests in a salt spray according to the ASTM B117-97 standard. Three types of corrosion were observed; galvanic corrosion, differential aeration corrosion, uniform corrosion and are discussed. The weight change with time was monitored and was used to describe the corrosion behaviour. The lap shear strength was measured as a function of corrosion time. The presence of the corrosion product within the overlap was observed to greatly influence the lap shear strength behaviour. A further study was carried out in order to examine the influence of the individual alloys on the corrosion of the SPR samples. In this part the potential influence of pulse current treatment on corrosion was also investigated and was observed to increase greatly the corrosion resistance of the I.F. steel. Principal findings for this observation are also provided.

Approximation Algorithms for Rectangle Piercing Problems

Piercing problems arise often in facility location, which is a well-studied area of computational geometry. The general form of the piercing problem discussed in this dissertation asks for the minimum number of facilities for a set of given rectangular demand regions such that each region has at least one facility located within it. It has been shown that even if all regions are uniform sized squares, the problem is NP-hard. Therefore we concentrate on approximation algorithms for the problem. As the known approximation ratio for arbitrarily sized rectangles is poor, we restrict our effort to designing approximation algorithms for unit-height rectangles. Our e-approximation scheme requires <I>n</I><sup><I>O</I>(1/&epsilon;²)</sup> time. We also consider the problem with restrictions like bounding the depth of a point and the width of the rectangles. The approximation schemes for these two cases take <I>n</I><sup><I>O</I>(1/&epsilon;)</sup> time. We also show how to maintain a factor 2 approximation of the piercing set in <I>O</I>(log <I>n</I>) amortized time in an insertion-only scenario.

Going beyond the trust veil in insolvency and divorce matters / Charmaine Robbertse

This mini-dissertation is aimed at analysing the requirements the court takes into consideration when deciding to pierce a trust veil in either insolvency or divorce matters. A clear exposition of the legal nature of a trust is provided to determine how a trust affords the extensive protection to trust assets, the very characteristic that makes it as popular as it is today. It is due to this protection of trust assets that a trust has become the object of abuse by founders and trustees, and the court has felt it necessary to introduce a remedy. In Badenhorst v Badenhorst the court stated that the company law doctrine of piercing the veil should be extended to trust law. Some authors criticised this judgement, and arguments pro(for) the extension is included in the conclusion. The research explored the circumstances that warrants the piercing of a trust veil and it was found that the court is likely to pierce a trust veil if the trust form was abused. The study then shifts its focus to the type of abuse the court seeks to remedy. A trust can amount to be the alter ego of a person or a court can deem a trust to be a sham. The research investigates the distinction between the two in depth, and the resultant finding is that only alter ego trusts will be pierced by a court, since a sham trust means that no valid trust has in fact been formed and therefore there is no veil to pierce. Often the courts are confused by the two and the likelyhood of a trust being labelled a sham by South African courts are slim. To find that a trust was abused, the courts will look at the essential requirements of forming a trust to determine the validity. The most important factors that the court considers when deciding to pierce the veil, is the type of control over the trust assets and the intention with which the trust is created or kept. An extensive analysis of the Companies Act and the doctrine of piercing the veil was done to probe their compatability with trust law and to see if the remedy is in fact effective and correctly applied. Case law to support the court‘s view and application of the mentioned doctrine is discussed and evaluated. The study closes with an evaluation of the procedure of piercing the veil and the consequences following such piercing, as well as the arguments for allowing piercing of a trust veil to force trust users to obey the basic trust idea of separation of enjoyment from control. / LLM (Estate Law), North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2015

Numerical study of two-phase air-water interfacial flow: plunging wave breaking and vortex-interface interaction

Two different air-water interfacial flows are studied including plunging wave breaking and flow past a vertical surface-piercing circular cylinder using complementary CFDShip-Iowa version 6 including Cartesian grid solver and orthogonal curvilinear grid solver. The plunging wave-breaking process for impulsive flow over a bump in a shallow water flume has been simulated using the exact experimental initial and boundary conditions. The overall plunging wave breaking process is described with major wave breaking events identified: jet plunge, oblique splash and vertical jet. These major events repeat up to four times before entering the chaotic breaking. The simulations show a similar time line as the experiments consisting of startup, steep wave formation, plunging wave, and chaotic wave breaking swept downstream time phases. Detailed wave breaking processes, including wave profile at maximum height, first plunge, entrapped air bubble trajectories and diameters, kinetic, potential, and total energy, and bottom pressures are discussed along with the experimental results. The simulations show differences and similarities with other experimental and computational studies for wave breaking in deep water and sloping beaches. The geometry and conditions in the present study are relevant to ship hydrodynamics since it includes effects of wave-body interactions and wave breaking direction is opposite to the mean flow. Large-eddy simulation with the Lagrangian dynamic subgrid-scale model has been performed to study the flow past a surface-piercing circular cylinder for Re and Fr effect. The flow features near the air-water interface show significant changes with different Reynolds numbers from sub-critical to critical regime. It is shown that the interface makes the separation point more delayed for all regime of Re. Remarkably reduced separated region below the interface is observed for critical Re regime and it is responsible for much reduced wake and recirculation region behind the cylinder and it recovers in the deep flow. At different Fr, significant changes are shown on the air-water interface structures. At lower Fr, relatively smaller bow waves are observed in front of the cylinder with Kelvin waves behind the cylinder and small amount of free-surface roughness and turbulence are also seen in the wake region. For higher Fr, the bow wave increases remarkably with the larger wake region and deeper depression and it breaks with similar features of plunging breakers. Much more small air-water interface structures including splashes and bubbles are observed behind the cylinder. It is hard to distinguish the Kelvin waves behind the cylinder due to much larger free-surface oscillations and turbulence. As Fr increases, the Kelvin wave angle decreases and deeper and narrower depression region behind the cylinder are observed. The flow features around the cylinder are significantly changed due to this cavity region behind the cylinder.

Ett processbolag är ett bolag vars huvudsyfte är att driva en process åt sin huvudman. Enligt huvudregeln i rättegångsbalken skall den förlorande parten stå för den vinnande partens rättegångskostnader. Vid det fall att en person använder sig av ett underkapitaliserat processbolag för att driva processen kan denne person vid en eventuell förlust, försätta bolaget i konkurs och därmed undvika att betala det stora belopp som krav på rättegångskostnader oftast utgör. Huvudregeln i aktiebolagslagen är att vare sig aktieägare eller någon annan skall vara skyldig att svara för aktiebolagets åtaganden. Denna huvudregel stipuleras i aktiebolagslagens 3 kap 1 §. Det har dock utvecklats en princip i praxis för när undantag görs ifrån denna huvudprincip och man ålägger aktieägare eller annan med "bestämmande inflytande" över bolaget ett ansvar för bolagets skulder. Denna princip kallas för ansvarsgenombrott. I doktrin går åsikterna isär när det gäller denna princip. Vissa författare anser att någon praxis som ger stöd för ett ansvarsgenombrottsinstitut inte existerar eller att det åtminstone är omöjligt att dra några säkra slutsatser om en eventuell utformning. Andra författare kan se tydliga principer utvecklade och har även ställt upp kriterier för när ansvarsgenombrott kan anses vara för handen. När det gäller processbolag diskuteras frågan inte i någon vidare utsträckning i vare sig praxis eller doktrin. Med det nya rättsfallet T 3004-08 (Punctatorfallet) har dock frågan fått nytt liv. Det rör sig här om ett enormt utstuderat användande av aktiebolagsformen för att genom ett processbolag undgå ansvar för rättegångskostnaderna i målet. Jag sätter i denna uppsats existerande rättskällor i relation till detta nya rättsfall för att utröna huruvida användandet av ett processbolag är grund för att tillämpa principerna om ansvarsgenombrott eller ej.

Hindu Caste Music in the Malaysian Thaipusam Festival.

Thaipusam, is an annual festival beginning on a full moon day between January 14 and February 14. This festival is celebrated in Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, India, Sri Lanka, Mauritius and South Africa. It is celebrated by all Hindu castes, from the highest Brahmin to the lowest Dalit. An important feature of Thaipsam is the kavadi ritual. This follows the myth of Surapadma, the demon, who eventually became Lord Maruga's honest devotee, Idumban. This conversion is represented by purification ceremonies, around which the festival focuses, and in which participants enter a state of trance, in order to carry out physically demanding feats. Kavadi originates from a Tamil (South Indian) word, kavati. It describes anything that can be suspended on the body (pole, hooks and chains). Today, it is taken to mean a semi-circular structure that is decorated with flowers, peacock feathers and palm leaves. The kavadi is drawn by devotees who have hooks, attached to their skin, with which to pull along the structure. The Brahmin caste, however hook small pails of milk onto their skin instead. The kavadi usually bears a vel (flesh-piercing implement), which represents Lord Maruga's lance. Devotees who 'take kavadi' do so in a higher state of mind or trance. Chanting, music, especially drumming, and incense are used to induce trance. Focusing mainly on fieldwork undertaken around Thaipusam in Kuala Lumpur, this thesis examines the background of the ceremony, its Hindu connections and the different music associated with each caste. The different drumming patterns, of each caste in particular, are transcribed, analyzed and compared, together with the melodic music of the nadaswarum, the instrument associated with the Brahmin music.
