Post Harvest Treatment Effects on Crown-Cut Broccoli Shelf Life

The effects of packaging treatments, post harvest cooling delay and storage duration on color, texture, ascorbic acid content, weight loss and glucosinolate retention in crown-cut heads of broccoli were studied. Oxygen and CO2 levels inside shrink wrap packages were also monitored. Shrink wrap packaging had a significant positive effect on hue angle (p<0.05). Packaging and post harvest cooling delay had no effect on hue difference and total color difference. While post harvest cooling delay had no effect on texture, crown-cut heads of broccoli stored in shrink wrap packaging retained firmness significantly better than ice packaged heads of broccoli (p<0.05). Ascorbic acid was retained better in broccoli held in shrink wrap packages and cooling delay had a significant negative influence on ascorbic acid content (p<0.05). Packaging and post harvest cooling delay had a significant positive effect on weight loss (p<0.05). Broccoli stored in shrink wrap film lost about 3.7% of original weight while ice packaging resulted in about 17.4% weight loss (p<0.05). No consistent trends were observed in the levels of O2 and CO2 inside shrink wrap packages. An important glucosinolate, glucoraphanin was retained significantly better in shrink wrapped heads (p<0.05). Between two cultivars, shelf life of cv.Gypsy was better than cv.Everest with respect to color, ascorbic acid retention and weight loss. But cv.Everest retained texture (firmness) better after 35 days of storage. Overall results indicate that shrink wrap packaging and shorter post harvest cooling delays protect quality of broccoli. / Master of Science

An Operational Concept of an IoT System for the Palletized Distribution Supply Chain

In recent years, Internet-of-Things technology (IoT) has been the subject of research in a diverse field of applications, given its essential role in transitioning society towards a more interconnected paradigm of conducting manufacturing, logistics, services, and business, what is also known as Industry 4.0. Consistent with this line of research, this project addresses the application of IoT in distribution packaging as a way to better understand supply chain conditions. Specifically, this work presents an operational concept for a system that implements IoT technology in the pallets that are used to move products along supply chains and serve as a vehicle to gain insight into the conditions experienced by products and unit loads. The development of this operational concept leverages a systems engineering framework to discover user needs, and stakeholders, and apply model-based systems engineering to create system models that capture expected system behavior and the outputs necessary to create value for the user. A semi structured interview was conducted with eleven companies in order to discover user needs related to their packaging during distribution processes in their supply chain. A system operational concept was developed through use cases, concept of operations, and formal modeling using Cameo System Modeling Software. A review of sensor and communication technologies is presented, as well as a description of the challenges and future research opportunities for the proposed operational concept in distribution packaging. The application of systems engineering framework, and model-based systems engineering to the distribution packaging domain brings clarity to problem formulation in order to lay-out solid value propositions for the adoption of IoT technologies, and to ensure successful realization of systems that achieve customer satisfaction. This work offers three main contributions. First, it provides an identification and description of the needs that industrial companies have in relation to their product and packaging performance during distribution operations. Secondly, it shows how a systems-based approach, leveraging on model-based systems engineering can be employed to conceptualize systems that use innovative technologies like IoT in the domain of distribution packaging. Third, it provides an overview of open research challenges and practical considerations for the implementation of IoT technology in the field of distribution packaging. / Master of Science / In 2007, The World Bank published a study which states that "eighty percent of US trade is carried on pallets" (Raballand and Aldaz-Carroll, 2007). Furthermore, in the year 2015, a report estimated that there would be 2.6 billion pallets circulating in the United States by the year 2017 (Freedonia Group, 2015). Pallets are ubiquitous and a key component of distribution operations in supply chains, as they transport goods, and are the main interface that connects material handling equipment and packaged products (White and Hamner, 2005). Based on that distinctive characteristic, this study contends that pallet can be used as a window to gain insight into the realities of what is experienced by products and packaging during distribution. This can be done by using sensors imbedded in pallets to capture data of interest about the physical conditions in the supply chains, which opens the potential for more customized and optimized packaging design, supported by more reliable and representative information. This idea is particularly relevant, as established protocols for packaging testing are limited in their capacity to accurately simulate the real-world conditions that occur in the supply chain. This has resulted in suboptimal packaging design (Rouillard, 2008) that decreases the efficiency of logistics operations. This study found that industrial companies are most concerned with avoiding damage that their products can suffer during transportation as a result of temperature, relative humidity, shock, and vibration. Thus, it is necessary to gather data about these distribution parameters for product shipments. Using a model-based system engineering approach, an operational concept is proposed to show what is needed from a system to be able to track these parameters. Furthermore, a review of current available technology for IoT is presented, as well as an examination of the challenges posed to the realization of the proposed operational concept, including factors like cybersecurity, and energy resources constraints. This work offers three main contributions. The Impact of Colour on Purchase Intention in the Cosmetics and Personal Care Industry : A Gender-Based Analysis

Abstract Background: The packaging design of a product, primarily the design element colour, affects purchase intention extensively. This has been stated in prior studies. However, whether colour has the same effect in the Swedish market has not been researched. Furthermore, there has been limited research on the difference between the genders' perception of gendered colours on product packaging and colours' effect on purchase intention in the Cosmetics and Personal care industry. Therefore, these elements are the focus of this research.   Purpose: This research aims to evaluate the effect of product packaging colour on Swedish residents' purchase intention in the Cosmetics and Personal Care industry. Furthermore, the relationship between gendered colours on product packaging and purchase intention will be analysed, comparing females and males.   Method: This study is deductive research, and it is based on a positivism paradigm. It uses a quantitative approach of gathering data through an online questionnaire. The sample consisted of 194 Swedish residents gathered through convenience sampling. Moreover, the data was analysed using Cronbach alpha coefficient, Spearman's rank correlation coefficient and Ordered logistic regression to test the hypotheses.    Findings: The theoretical framework identified a research gap concerning the impact of product packaging colours on purchase intention and how gender-specific packaging colours affect males and females differently. Based on the existing literature, five hypotheses were formulated. The findings confirmed that product packaging colours for all Swedish residents, had a significant positive influence on purchase intention, leading to the acceptance of H1. Moreover, both males and females demonstrated a significant positive effect on purchase intention when exposed to packaging colours associated with their respective genders, resulting in the acceptance of H2 and H4. However, both genders demonstrated a non-significant effect on purchase intention when exposed to packaging colours associated with the opposite gender, leading to the rejection of H3 and H5.   Conclusion: The results show that product packaging colour has a positive effect on purchase intention among Swedish residents. Moreover, it shows that the Gender Schema theory is still relevant in today's society, which shows contribution to theory. Further, marketers should continue to use gendered colours in their product packaging.

This study aims at examining the effects of plastic food packaging onthe consumers’ health in five different countries namely Finland, Sweden, Denmark,Iceland, and Norway. Anarrative synthesis of seven qualitative and quantitative sourceswas performed out of a sample of 455 articlesthat were drawn from different academic.Seven articles met the inclusion conditions and the other articles were excluded due toissues on population and alignment with the research question. The findings reveal thatplastic food packaging has adverse health effects on the endocrine and metabolicprocesses because they contain chemicals such as Bisphenol A, Phthalates, BisphenolS, PBDEs, and TBBPA. Background: T-Emballage is an established retailer of packaging materials with a specialization in customer-unique packaging solutions. For T-Emballage, it is crucial to adapt to the increasing importance of packaging materials as an opportunity for value creation and differentiation in an industry where customer demands are increasing, which requires active cooperation with suppliers to be at the forefront. Effective supplier development improves supplier capabilities and performance, helping buyers achieve cost reductions, productivity improvements, quality improvements and optimal resource utilization. SMEs are often characterized by limited resources, which makes it especially essential for these companies to develop the right supplier in the right way. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to identify and explore activities for supplier development based on a portfolio analysis and supplier evaluation, with a focus on improving the quality, price and service of T-Emballage’s various suppliers. Furthermore, the study aims to investigate the potential cost-related effects that can be achieved when implementing the recommended activities for T-Emballage’s strategic suppliers. By achieving this, the study aims to offer insights and recommendations for effective supplier development for retail SMEs in the packaging industry. Method: The study employs a qualitative approach with quantitative elements, where the first research question is primarily qualitative and the second, quantitative. Data collection was conducted through structured, semi-structured, and unstructured interviews. Furthermore, data was gathered from two focus groups, as well as directly from T-Emballage’s business system and statistical programs. Conclusion: The study finds that T-Emballage’s nine largest suppliers, in terms of spend, require different activities for supplier development. For the strategic suppliers, whose performance in the supplier evaluation had room for improvement, direct activities are recommended, in the categories of training and support, technical development, communication and collaboration as well as evaluation and assessment. For the strategic suppliers that have performed well based on the supplier evaluation, along with the bottleneck supplier, non-critical and the leverage supplier, various indirect supplier development activities are recommended. Furthermore, it appears that the implementation of the recommended supplier development activities for T-Emballage’s strategic suppliers potentially generate both cost increases and reductions. The indirect activities offer the greatest potential for cost reductions, while several of the direct ones were considered unfeasible considering, among other things, the resources that would be required. Contribution: The study contributes to filling a research gap regarding supplier development for retail SMEs in the packaging industry. By using portfolio analysis and supplier evaluation, the study offers a unique framework to determine appropriate supplier development activities for different suppliers. In addition, the results of the study constitute a significant decision basis for T-Emballage in terms of the choice of supplier development activities. The study’s societal contribution lies in promoting an ethical supply chain practice through supplier development, fostering long-term stability, potentially benefiting the wider community through improved economic growth and responsible business conduct.

Employing the 7Rs framework—Rethink, Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Repurpose, Recycle, and Rot—this research investigates how these enterprises adapt their packaging strategies to align with EU directives aimed at achieving 70% recyclable and reusable packaging by 2030. Despite varied challenges such as high costs and diverse regulatory demands across EU states, SMEs demonstrate resilience and innovation in their compliance strategies. environmental impact while maintaining economic viability. Such as an SME transitioning from using plastic packaging to cardboard, driven by both regulatory requirements and carrier fees for non-compliance, which resulted in reduced environmental impact and improved customer satisfaction. A 3-Dimensional Computer Simulation Model for Temperature Distribution Prediction in a Seafood Shipping Container

Seafood transportation/distribution has become an important activity in the seafood industry due to increasing global demand for fresh seafood. Providing good quality seafood to consumers requires appropriate handling and packaging technology. The purpose of this research is to study the effect of various combinations of insulation and coolant quantities on temperature distribution within a seafood shipping container and packaging cost. A three-dimensional transient heat transfer model was developed to predict the temperature distribution in a fish shipping container. The finite element method was used to develop the model. An eight-noded isoparametric hexahedron element was selected. The geometric configuration of the fish shipping container and the physical and thermal properties of the materials used for packaging were the input parameters of the model. The model validation was performed in two stages to ensure component-wise validation. The first stage was for the case with no ice. The second stage was for the case with ice. The results from the model were compared to those obtained through experiments. Predicted and observed temperatures showed good agreement. The temperature predictions were within 2 °C for the case with no ice and 3 °C for the case with ice. The effect of a polyethylene/aluminum foil laminated bag on the temperature distribution in the shipping container was studied for the case with no ice. The temperatures of high density polyethylene, which simulated fish, were reduced by approximately 3 °C (maximum) due to the low emissivity of aluminum foil. The model was applied to study the effect of various combinations of insulation and coolant quantities on the temperature distribution and the packaging cost. It was found that the fish container with 1.70 cm thick polystyrene and 10 kg of ice can be used for a required shipping time of 24 hours whereas the fish container with 2.54 cm thick polystyrene and 10 kg of ice can be used for a required shipping time of 48 hours under the simulated transport conditions used in this study. / Ph. Causality analysis of media influence on environmental attitude, intention and behaviors leading to green purchasing

Yes / This research provides a comprehensive delineation of the process that leads to the formation of green behavior by including the role played by media and attitude towards environment-friendly packaging, along with ecological concern and perceived consumer effectiveness. The study offers a parsimonious framework that measures the major antecedents of environmental attitude divided into inward and outward orientation. Moreover, it also measures the effects of these environmental attitudes and attitude towards green packaging on green purchase intention. A total of 308 usable questionnaires were obtained from Indian consumers and data analysis was conducted using confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modeling. The results show that inward environmental attitude and attitude towards green packaging play a pivotal role in shaping green purchase intention. Surprisingly, outward environmental attitude was found to be non-significant. Findings offer implications for marketing managers and public policy makers, as well as reveal fruitful avenues for further research.
