The objective of this work is to demonstrate, through the semiotic analysis of threesystemic projects Bijari, that art can point out ways that lead to changing habits. Installations and interventions are aimed at the production of aesthetic objects and environments, in order to reach the general public in cities, particularly São Paulo, causing estrangement and shock in order to wake them a new look, a new mentality, a change of habits, able to guarantee the permanence of living systems, including human beings, considered in the light of General Systems Theory, the more complex biopsychosocial systems on the planet. The projects are analyzed Urban Nature, which are part of four facilities, Ocean Invaded and LUXURY. Based on the central concepts of General Systems Theory and Peircean Semiotics, we intend to make a systemicsemiotic analysis of the work of the Bijari, relating these works with the concept of permanence in the Art and normative sciences of Peirce (semiotics, ethics and aesthetics).

A Peircean Critique of and Alternative to Intentionalism about Perceptual ExperienceKruidenier, Daniel E. 05 February 2007 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / My thesis is broadly construed this way: intentionalism, as a theory about perceptual experience, says that the intentional character of perceptual experience determines the phenomenological character of that experience. In some way, to be explained, phenomenology is determined by intentional content. I will show that intentionalism fails on two accounts. It fails to replace the sense-data theory as an explanation of the content of perceptual experience. It also fails to deal satisfactorily with the problem of perceptual illusion. I will then offer an alternative rooted in the perceptual theory of Charles Peirce. I believe his critical but common sense approach preserves the intuition of sense-data theory, that perception is primarily a relation between perceivers and objects. Peirce’s theory also provides a better solution to the problem of illusion.

The C. The main theoretical issue that guided the research is to know each are the theoretical and applied interrelations between information and knowledge organization and Peirce’s Philosophy and Semiotics. The hypothesis supported is that Peirce’s Philosophy and Semiotics contribute with consistent explications about the phenomena resulting from the activities of information and knowledge organization. Therefore the objective is to know and to value the theoretical and applied contributions of Peirce’s Philosophy and Semiotics for the information and knowledge organization. It is at the same time a bibliography and exploratory study. It brings as results the presence of the elementary and intermediary levels of interdisciplinarity between the Peirce’s thought and the information and knowledge organization, mainly, in the axle Semiotics and Pragmatism.

In this research the goal is to expose the understanding of what is the abduction for Peirce, from a hermeneutic analysis such as it is treated by researchers from UNESP/RC bound to Mathematic Education Post-Graduation Program and to ideas of Hans Georg Gadamer (1999). For that, the question that guided the research is: What is abduction?. The hermeneutic study of Peirce's texts, especially at The Collected Papers of Charles Sanders Peirce compound of eight volumes, is presented in two boards which bring Nuclear Ideas (I.N.) that, by analysis, take us to the categories: feature, procedure and definition. The interpretation of these features allow us to say the abduction, in Peirce, is a logic reasoning, an inferential act which origin at action of question being a type of reasoning that differs from classic logic by the way how it opens possibilities of a new intelligibility of what it's seen, from what it can express when is developed a new explanation of seen. Perceiving the features of abduction it can see how it opens possibilities for a production of the mathematic knowledge giving shape to the concept, that is expressed by a language that expose the direction of produced

Vagueness and Its Boundaries: A Peircean Theory of VaguenessAgler, David Wells 26 February 2010 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / Many theories of vagueness employ question-begging assumptions about the semantic boundaries between truth and falsity. This thesis defends a theory of vagueness put forward by Charles S. Peirce and argues for a novel solution to the sorites paradox based upon his work. Contrary to widespread opinion, I argue that Peirce distinguished borderline vagueness from other related forms of indeterminacy, e.g. indefiniteness, generality, unspecificity, uninformativity, etc. By clarifying Peirce’s conception of borderline vagueness, I argue for a solution to the sorites paradox based upon his logical semantics. In addition, I argue for this theory against the epistemic theory of vagueness, which makes controversial claims concerning the sharp semantic boundary between truth and falsity, and against the supervaluationist theory of vagueness, which is committed to the in principle impossibility of sharp semantics boundaries for propositions with vague terms.

Se il "Tu" è la prima persona. Grammatica e diritto in Eugen Rosenstock-Huessy (1888-1973) e Charles S. Peirce (1839-1914)Ciccioli, Paolo 16 September 2024 (has links)
At the beginning of the 21st century, in the fields of philosophy of language and moral philosophy, there has been a growing interest in studies dedicated to the “second person” perspective. This attention seems to reveal a crisis in the model of identity thinking, codified by Neo-Platonism, and its multiple conceptualizations, including man, logic and law, as highlighted by Maurizio Manzin. The aim of this thesis is to investigate the researches of Eugen Rosenstock-Huessy and Charles S. Peirce, who devoted their studies to the analysis of the crisis of identity thinking and to the formulation of theoretical proposals suitable for overcoming it, verifying their congruence and degree of adaptability to the theories on legal reasoning of an argumentative-rhetorical nature. Despite their partially different fields of research, the two authors began with the same starting point, that of pronouns, emphasizing the problematic arrangement handed down from scholastic grammar. In particular, Rosenstock-Huessy advocated a model of original social communication according to the Thou-I-We-It arrangement. The German speech thinker composes these pronouns in the “cross of reality”, a socio-linguistic model constituted by the integration between two phases (which are equivalent to two types of rationality corresponding to them) and four fronts: the event that occurs in the arc of nominal reality in the prejective front-subjective front-trajective front (by means of “fractal rationality”), is archived in the dimension of pronominal existence in the objective front (using “linear rationality”). Identitarian thinking assumes that it can study reality only from the perspective of the objective front, that is, of the individual and of deduction, of linear time and of the causality produced by the efficient cause. Peirce and Rosenstock-Huessy have expanded this monological status, placing at the center of their investigations the event as the confluence of two temporal currents, one oriented from the past towards the future (anteceptive) and the other from the future towards the past (ponecective), also contributing to proposing an original model of causality, the result of the joint effect of efficient cause and final cause. Once we have shown the form of the accomplishment of communication as a biographical and social fact based on the transformative status of linguistic propositions, we will try to apply it to the theory of law and legal argumentation, showing how a convergence is possible that corroborates the validity of the CALS (Cooperated Argumentative Legal Syllogism) model proposed by Manzin, in which rhetoric assumes a methodological and constitutive role of the internal premise, and thus of the judicial enthymeme.

This text contains, as indicated in the tide, an interpretation of the birth of the main themes of Charles Sanders Peirce's philosophy. lts goal is to show, how in the end of the 1860's from initial concerns about kancian philosophy, viz. the theory of categories, Peirce comes to sketch- though in an well articulated way, - some conceptions of the utmost importance to his
philosophical project. Thus, we try to explain that his first step will be to set a new list of categories up, intending to explain the reduccion of empirical manifold to conceptual unity. We also try to explain the elaboration of this new list by pointing out the young Peirce' s new conception of logic, which is different from the tradicional aristotelian one. Further, and thereafter, from this
new list he formulates a theory of cognition stating that every thought is a process of creation and interpretation of signs, whereof the very functioning can be described as an inferential, not anymore as a judgement process. He also settles a theory of the reality of universals, as a necessary outcome of the fundamental assumption of the identity of the conceptions of beeing and cognizability. These ideas led him still to present, incipiently, a theory of the justification of the validity of induction, based upon a description of the possibility condicions of experience, a theory which suggests central themes of his fallibilism and sinequism. These igeas frame the basis of his Pragmatism, as we see it, understood as a philosophica method of clearing up scientific concepts to be applied to tradicional Metaphysics, with the purpose of renewing it, setting aside false problems, focusing on signification problems. The present work ends with a succinct mention to his Pragmatism, developed after these early works, wherein we can see that the originality of his ideas at this beginning of his philosophical development was, at least to settle the ground for a new way of thinking the entanglement between the logical- conceptual- and ontological determinations o fthe world- i. e.?-a new way of thinking the relations established between [Physis] and [lógos] / Mestrado / Mestre em Filosofia

Mind and language : evolution in contemporary theories of cognitionDe Villiers, Tanya 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (DPhil (Philosophy))--University of Stellenbosch, 2006. / This thesis gives an historical overview of some of the issues connecting philosophy
of mind and philosophy of langauge in the twentieth century, especially with regard to the
relevance of both disciplines to theories of cognition. Specifically, the interrelation between
the theories of Peirce,Chomsky, Derrida, and Deacon are discussed. Furthermore, an
overview of twentieth century views on mind in both philosophy and the cognitive sciences is
given. The argument is made that many of the apparently insurmountable issues that plague
theories on mind and cognition today can be traced back to the metaphysical mould into
which the philosophical questions at issue here were cast. Also, despite current resistance to
the idea from many philosophical quarters, a case is made for approaching language and
mind in terms of neo-Darwinist evolutionary theory.
