This dissertation was based on a study carried out with farmers involved in the Urban and Peri-urban Agriculture Project which was developed by the Núcleo de Desenvolvimento Econômico e Social at the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande (NUDESE/FURG), located in Rio Grande, RS, Brazil, in 2008 and 2009. Results show that, beyond the limits imposed by capitalism, the development of Agroecologybased agriculture – which means the diversification of production and the elaboration of educational programs for farmers – has contributed to ensure advances in the search for Food Sovereignty. Furthermore, it has become an important space to discuss and work in Transformative Environmental Education in order to intertwine its theory and its effective practice/action along with the farmers. This study aimed at verifying whether the development of the proposal contributed to ensure the families’ Food Sovereignty and at identifying the limits and possibilities of this action regarding changes it generated and reflections/actions that helped to overcome Environmental Injustice which has been experienced as a whole nowadays. Besides, this research has three specific objectives, namely: to identify changes, if any, in the organization of the families’ Agroecology-based agricultural production; to show the limits and the potentiality the Project has; and to analyze the challenges of actions in Environmental Education in its transformative trend in this context, regarding changes in the material and subjective conditions that constitute family farming. The methodology comprised a literature review, participant observation and interviews with the farmers. Discursive Textual Analysis was used to discuss and reflect upon the data and sources. Actions developed by NUDESE, in terms of the educational process and practices that aim at agroecological transition, were fundamental to create spaces where hope and changes may happen, as opposed to the form of economic organization that prevails these days by defending the interests of agribusiness, rather than little units of family farming. However, there were aspects that limited the actions under investigation and that corroborated the need to cope with capitalism. One of them was the reason why the Project was not funded by the Ministério do Desenvolvimento Social e Combate à Fome (MDS) anymore. In addition, this study pointed out the lack of dialogue and close interaction with the City Government in both cities under study, structural problems faced in street fairs and the lack of discussion throughout the educational program developed by NUDESE concerning the criticism aimed at the organization of the current production, the limits of capitalism, the relations that humans have established among themselves and with nature they live in and, finally, the farmers’ participation in changes related to how they can produce and life in a process like this one.

Agricultura urbana e periurbana na ótica da promoção da saúde / Urban and peri-urban agriculture in the perspective of health promotion

Christiane Gasparini Araujo Costa 22 April 2015 (has links)
Although the growing of food in urban areas is an ancient activity, it was in the second half of the 1990s that the so-called urban and peri-urban agriculture (PUA) acquired prominence in the national and world stage, asserting itself as an integration tool in sustainable development processes. Aligned with the principles of the human right to food and food sovereignty, the establishment of a National Agricultural Urban Policy is one of the goals of the National Food Security and Nutrition Plan for the period of 2012-2015. As a thematic still not appropriate by the academy, there is room for further investigation, within the public health system, to understand the connections between PUA and Health Promotion. With the overall goal to understand the importance, challenges and possibilities of the practice of PUA, from the experience of the city Embu das Artes / SP, located in the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo, this study aimed to identify the PUA projects in the municipality; identify the values and meanings attributed to the experiences by the participants, board members, technicians and professionals of the Basic Health Units; explore the connections of urban agriculture with the dimensions of Health Primary Care, Supply and Urban Planning; research interfaces between urban agriculture and health promotion guidelines. Data were collected by using a socio-demographic questionnaire with the participants of the projects, individual interviews and focus groups. To complement the information, a documentary analysis of materials, produced by the government and civil society, was performed. The systematization of the data followed the parameters placed by the dialectical perspective that highlights the importance of understanding the contradictions in the analysis of structures and the historic and dynamic character of the actions. The results show a close link between the practice of gardens and Health Promotion guidelines. It was possible to identify meanings and values, both individually and collectively, convergent with the ideas of Health Promotion, associated with their different fields and principles such as the creation of healthy environments, strengthening community action, developing personal skills, the rescue of traditional practices and habits, the encouragement of autonomy and empowerment and demands for reorientation of services. From the multifunctional component of Peri-Urban Agriculture, studied here, with emphasis on its connections to Primary Health, with the field of Food Supply and Urban Planning, an aspect, which deserves deeper study, concerns the need to clearly define intra- and inter-sector strategies, to enable a greater integration within the departments that perform interfaces with this theme, in order to carry out the commitment of the entire management, in partnership with social and referenced in territory organizations.

Expanding Water Service Delivery through Partnership between Water Utility and Small Scale Water Providers in Lusaka, Zambia : A Case of Lusaka’s Peri-Urban Areas

Mwandu Siyeni, Yvonne January 2008 (has links)
Zambia is a highly urbanized country with 60% of its urban population residing in low cost areas also called peri-urban, slum or informal settlements. The increase in urban population attributed to rapid migration and urbanization due to political and economic changes has taken a toll on service provision as the infrastructure development and service provision has failed to meet the demand. For the 33 peri-urban areas in Lusaka, the water supply and sanitation has been poor, inadequate and unreliable with the coverage being slightly above 50% for water while 90% of the urban population does not have access to the much needed sanitation. The low coverage is a result of lack the financial capacity on the part of the service providers to extend services to un served areas. This research focuses on the strategies to provide sustainable water and sanitation services to peri-urban areas to ensure improved accessibility through the expansion of infrastructure and attainment of full cost recovery. In this era of increasing migration to unplanned settlements where the services are inadequate, alternatives to public provision of water and sanitation services need to be put in place. One of the alternatives is the public-private partnership which encompasses the society, private and the civil society. As has been found in the study the best alternative should not only be completely bottom up but should also be more demand driven and be able to provide for greater contributions from the affected communities. The hypothesis of the study is to ascertain if provision of water supply to the Peri-Urban Areas (PUAs) can be achieved through the partnership between the water utility and the small scale water providers. Therefore, the objectives of the research are to: evaluate and compare the current service provision to the peri-urban areas by the utility and small scale providers in terms of technical, social and institutional arrangements and determine the best way of ensuring sustained service provision to peri urban areas and show how partnership can be the best solution to improving service delivery to these areas. Service provision in PUAs can not be achieved without the involvement of all the stakeholders especially the community who are also the users and whose major role is paying for the service to enhance sustainability. In this study the Small Scale Water Providers (SSWP) users were found to be satisfied with the service provided than the utility users who felt that more needed to be done. The two providers are found to have different strengths which when combined would enhance service provision. The collaboration between utility with its competence in water supply, technical installations, water quality testing and SSWP with theirs in community involvement, cost recovery, effective operation and maintenance and demand driven water schemes have to be merged to achieve the intended goal and it is also an indication that the two can complement each other. Utility should therefore consider opening investment accounts for all the areas so as to detach PUAs needs from the general plan and eventually budget as they would be self sustaining and enhance willingness to pay for the users. The SSWP should therefore be viewed as partners by all and licensing should be considered by the government for the benefit of the urban poor.

The valorization of organic waste in "peri-urban" agriculture in Dakar (Senegal) : analysis of a strategic multifunctionality

Tounkara, Sidy 24 November 2015 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the double issue of integration or the gradual disappearance of agriculture in the city of Dakar and the agricultural use of urban organic waste. The first aspect raises immediately the question of territorial governance of local public action. The second aspect refers to the multifunctionality of agriculture in the context of greening of human activities to protect the environment. How do gardeners adapt to this double concern: to maintain agriculture in city and promote urban organic waste? How can agricultural multifunctionality contribute to maintain and strengthen gardening activity? These issues were tackled by adopting an interdisciplinary approach crossing especially sociology and geography. We suppose that this new environmental function of “peri-urban” agriculture is an opportunity for gardeners in Dakar to develop strategies for adaptation to the local context and to the project of greening of agriculture. A geographical approach of Niayes’ space (Dakar) showed that agricultural practices are largely determined by the characteristics of this environment under human transformation reinforced by urbanization. We show also that the agenda of agricultural development problems in the city Dakar is likely to display political than an actual entry in the urban project. Finally, it remains blocking factors to overcome for “environmentally intensify” the systems of production of agriculture. Some of these factors are based on the registration of agricultural practices in the local socio-cultural system and the relations that gardeners have with the scientific “world” and environmental issues.

Malmborg, Pernilla January 2019 (has links)
The rural landscape surrounding the bigger cities are becoming increasingly fragmented due to pressures from urbanization and higher demands on conflicting usages of available buildable land. This has resulted in the natural and cultural landscapes in peri-urban areas being threatened. One usage of this land by equine sport is expanding where the horses need access to land and nature. A great majority of the horses in Sweden are kept in peri-urban areas, but horse keeping is also a factor that increases the risk for land use conflicts. The aim of this study is to better understand the role of horse keeping in the peri-urban landscape, by investigating these activities through the lens of ecosystem services. This study looked into the challenges and potential of horse keeping in physical planning, and how it is currently included by the local government of Österåker municipality in Stockholm county. This was achieved as a qualitative case study, consisting of interviews with local horse keepers, a web based survey for municipal residents and an analysis of available local government planning policies, reports and strategic documents. Horse keeping was found to be primarily associated with cultural ecosystem services, by its contribution to the equine sport sector and the preservation of the rural cultural and natural landscape with high recreational values. By preserving farmland and grazing pastures for horses, horse keeping can also be linked to supporting, regulating and provisioning ecosystem services. In addition, horse keeping in peri-urban areas was found to end in the periphery of the local physical planning. However, there is a need to integrate a long-term strategy and holistic perspective to achieve the full potential of the horse keeping, considering the contribution to the ecosystem services. There is a need for a more creative planning if horses should reach the potential as a resource and a planning tool for a sustainable development in the dynamic peri-urban landscape.

Uses, challenges and training needs regarding business skills for fashion entrepreneurs in the Emfuleni Local Municipality

Nana, Keshni January 2019 (has links)
M. Tech. (Department of Visual Arts and Design, Faculty of Human Sciences), Vaal University of Technology. / Fashion entrepreneurs with no formal fashion-related education or training are hereafter referred to by the acronym FEWFFET (fashion entrepreneurs without formal fashion-related education or training). Entrepreneurship provides a feasible means of employment in a country where national unemployment rates are alarmingly high. To succeed, entrepreneurs require business knowledge and skill to operate profitable and sustainable businesses. However, entrepreneurs who were previously disadvantaged often possess only low levels of education, limited qualifications and training. This applies to survivalist fashion entrepreneurs in the Sedibeng District Municipality (SDM) who produce various items of apparel and clothing. Over a third of these entrepreneurs are not formally educated in business management and may not possess the adequate knowledge to operate their fashion business successfully. The research aim was to investigate the uses and challenges pertaining to business skills amongst FEWFFET to determine their business skills training needs. The sample population included 105 black fashion entrepreneurs, operating micro, survivalist enterprises within peri-urban, resource-poor communities in the Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) of Sedibeng, Gauteng. A quantitative study using non-probability purposive sampling and snowball sampling was performed. Interviewer-administered questionnaires were conducted with respondents at fabric and haberdashery stores or within their home-business environments. The results indicated that respondents lacked business plan development skills and showed only moderate skills in finance and marketing. Respondents indicated business skills training needs for developing a business plan, conducting basic bookkeeping, determining correct product pricing, drafting quotations and invoices, developing a budget, conducting basic market research and advertising their products and services.

The role of peri-urban nature in outdoor sports and outdoor recreation : Insights from Rudan nature reserve in Stockholm / Den stadsnära naturens roll inom utomhusidrott och friluftsliv : En studie av Rudans naturreservat i Stockholm

Andersson, Harald January 2021 (has links)
Nature based sports and outdoor recreation activities are much appreciated, but continued densification in urban and peri-urban areas may reduce future opportunities to take part in such activities in a desirable way. To be able to consider the needs of these activities, in relation to other competing land use interests, it is essential to understand why people engage in the activities and how the nature landscape contributes and is used. The aim of this degree project is, therefore, to investigate motives and preferences among participants in various nature based activities, and to describe the role of nature and the participants’ relation to the nature landscape. While many previous studies have targeted recreational activities, where participation traditionally is non-competitive and focused on wellbeing, this study mainly targets nature based sports, where activities, in general, are more physical and result-oriented. The study has a descriptive approach where Rudan, a nature reserve in southern Stockholm, is used as a case study. There, data was primarily collected through a questionnaire (N=64), distributed among members of sport clubs in Rudan as well as among visitors on site. Responses were then analysed through cross-tabulations. The results indicate that people have varying, and often several, motives for taking part in their activities and for performing their activities in a particular setting. The results also show that the nature landscape, and the characteristics it holds, has an important role to play in many aspects; it can be a driver of motivation, a stage for the activity, and a generator of human benefits. The relatively small sample size does, however, affect the accuracy of the study, and more research is needed to get a comprehensive understanding. Nevertheless, the findings can be used to raise awareness and communicate the value of nature in nature based sports and outdoor recreation activities. Recognising nature’s multiple roles and values for participants in such activities will be necessary when analysing potential effects of future development plans or interventions in the peri-urban nature landscape.

Soce, Ndiogosse 05 1900 (has links)
Intra- and peri-urban agriculture is practiced in the urban region of Dakar in Senegal. However, it faces some threats resulting in a reduction of its spaces. This raises the question of the importance that would be given to these agricultural areas in the Dakar context. This research aims to better understand this phenomenon. Within this framework, the concept of multifunctionality has been adopted. The latter postulates that the recognition of agriculture goes through that of the multiple functions that it can play within society. These can be social, economic and environmental. In addition, the normative approach of this concept has been adopted, positing that the multifunctionality of agriculture in a territory depends on local territorial issues. So it cannot be uniform for all territories. However, this concept has been used more in Western contexts so that it has been deemed “Eurocentric”. Our objective was therefore to explore from a particular angle the multifunctionality of intra- and peri-urban agriculture in Dakar, an urban region of a developing country. In this context, we are interested in the concept of values which allows us to have a broader scope of the roles that this agriculture could play. To achieve this, we have adopted a theoretical framework that draws from the fields of economics, landscape studies, ecology and geography. The objective is twofold: to grasp the values given to agriculture in Dakar, but also to understand the context of the emergence and construction of these values in order to better understand this phenomenon of the evolution of agriculture. Our approach should therefore also be multi-actor, because, in the normative approach of multifunctionality, the agricultural actor is no longer the main one concerned by agriculture, but all the actors of the territory. Indeed, the value of this agriculture would be assessed on the basis of the values it represents for all the actors. Our results have shown us that urban actors carry values that appear different depending on their link with these spaces. But there is unanimity on certain food and economic values. However, new values of an environmental, aesthetic and immaterial nature appear whereas they were hitherto little put forward as priority values within the framework of the multifunctionality of a city of the South. Another determining element of the results is the understanding of the components of the landscape or the context in which the values emerge. This context highlights both positive, negative and ambivalent elements vis-à-vis agriculture. Thus, agricultural actors seem to evoke more positive components while other actors such as technicians and citizens evoke more constraints or negative components of a land nature.
