The Product of Fantasy and Themed Hotels in remote peripheral locations of Northern Sweden: Case of Treehotel, Stora Hotellet and ‘Rock Hotel’.

Nangah, Angyrette January 2016 (has links)
Very often remote peripheral locations with scarce unique attractions find it difficult to attract investment and development in many spheres including tourism. Yet some innovative entrepreneurs have taken advatage of some of these locations, using the natural resources (though not scarce) that they posses to develop themed tourism. The success of these themed establishments located in remote peripheries is renounced as they attract tourists world wide. This thesis therefore explores the fantasy and themed hotel product and location as elements of attraction in peripheral locations. Information obtained  through consultation with expersts will not only bring new knowlege to academia on the subject; it would also be useful in planning new themed destination products in the periphery since it provides inside knowledge on what to consider when setting up establishments of like characteristics.

As transformações na relação centro-periferia e a ficcionalização da miséria na metrópole paulistana / Transformations in the relation between center and periphery and the fictionalization of poverty in the São Paulo metropolis

Pinho, Rinaldo Gomes 21 December 2016 (has links)
The thesis we present here had as its final purpose the research on the transformation in the relation between center and periphery with the critical form of fictitious reproduction of São Paulo metropolis between 1980 and nowadays. We tried to relate the transformation on these internal urban separations on the metropolis from the critique of a theoretical framework developed in Geography and Social Sciences about the so called peripheral spaces. That framework expressed these separations from a class struggle point of view as a material expression of urban space and thought about them as the locus of working class subject. To accomplish such a critique we studied the marxists that discussed capitalistic reproduction from the point of view of the objectivity of crisis related to immanent crises of capital asking about revolutionary subjectivity as the overcoming engine to capitalism. Through these theoretical and general issues we tried to criticize dualistic points of view about the metropolis and also tried to compare them with the debate about such a critical period of fictional reproduction, which creates a critical identity on the reproduction of what is known as center and periphery of São Paulo metropolis. This critical identity was presented from the democratization of credit forms, manly between poor people in the metropolis, as a way of living and as the access to consumption in such a way to reproduce exceeding capital on the period. From that, we argue that what is known as periphery is inserted nowadays on the center of critical and fictitious capital reproduction.

This paper analyzes the establishment, operation and emergency movement of popular educators in the outskirts of Porto Alegre/RS. The analysis recovers the history of social movements and local political context of the 1980s , relating them to the development of a specific demand of the urban outskirts of the city for children's care. In the 1990s the expansion of public control norms such as the LDB raises the issue of children's care quality, reinforcing the idea of early childhood education. In this new context the popular demand for child care becomes a necessity for training those who work in community nurseries , without appropriate qualification. The data have been collected using field research techniques such as ethnography, participative observation, semi-structured interviews and life history, as well as document analysis and review of literature pieces on this subject. Devido ao planejamento urbano aplicado, muitos aspectos relacionados à qualidade de vida dos moradores em questão não melhorou / Abstract:This work aims to understand the spatial formation process of the city from two sides: a consolidated illegal occupation built by the population and slowly built?up by local authorities and the other represented by the housing produced by COHAB. For this, there was a cut in the southwest zone of Campinas, more precisely, macro?region 5 of DICs - Industrial Districts - and its surroundings. This way, the morphology of urban spaces with their diversity and intensity of uses are empirically analyzed. Moreover, it is described how these spatial configurations affect the formation of the city, and how is the performance of the government in Campinas. Finally, the research concludes that the study areas suffer total interference from the government, being it in dissipated construction of "conjuntos habitacionais" in peripheral areas, as well as the omission of spatial production of illegal occupations originated in the surroundings. Due to the urban planning applied, many aspects of quality of life of residents in question have not improved / Mestrado / Arquitetura e Construção / Mestre em Engenharia Civil

Em termos das características a serem analisadas destacam-se: sexo, idade, estrutura familiar, origem dos migrantes, tempo de residência, renda, educação e ocupação / Abstract: The considered study intends to examine the demographic profile of resident population from some habitation areas of low income, specific from Campinas, São Paulo, classified according the moment and specific type of occupation. The choice of the areas will also be made having in account the institutional politician, economic and historical period where each one of the nesting situations occurred. The relevance of the study concerning the subject is based on the fact that the consequences of social-economic, urbanities and ambient of the irregularityhave been many and serious, therefore, beyond directly affecting the inhabitants of the informal nesting, it produces a great negative impact on the cities and the urban population as a whole. It is possible to say that distinct processes of occupation, for involving different strategies and moments, would tend to mobilize migrants with different profiles in terms of origin, time of residence, familiar composition etc. Therefore, its necessary to investigate which demographic elements would be associates to these distinct conditions of nesting. On this way, the study searches to give special emphasis to the migratory characteristics of the resident population in each one of these areas, having as estimated that the group of people that occupies them would present profiles that would reflect the structure of conditions that had motivated such nesting. Although the data about the balanced areas of Demographic Census 2000, for the size, do not allow correct localize this specific nesting - as, for example, a land division in particular -, it is considered to evaluate bigger zones that correspond to a territory where areas of the mentioned types predominates. In terms of the characteristics to be analyzed, they are distinguished according to sex, age, familiar structure, origin of the migrants, time of residence, income, education and occupation / Mestrado / Demografia / Mestre em Demografia

A partir das narrativas das lideranças do movimento por escola, foi possível o resgate da história local, deste pedaço da zona leste da cidade de São Paulo, que tanto contribuiu para os chamados "novos movimentos sociais" das décadas de 1970 e 1980 / Abstract: The objective of this research was to find the trajectory of politics and social participation a group of women, leadership of a movement for a school in a neighborhood on East Zone of São Paulo City, in 1970s and 1980s. The Municipal Elementary School of Coelho Neto, it works since 1992 in a masonry building, this was a achievement made by the dwellers of their neighborhood of Parque Boa Esperança, São Mateus after a lot of years of struggle and organization. This social movement was in the context of the popular demands which appears on the city suburbs in the 1970s, when reported the bad conditions of dwellers living and lack of democracy in Brazilian society, it gravely hit the structure of the Military Dictatorship in Brazil since 1964. Through the rescue of memory to school movement, the leaderships of movement has shown their paths of political involvement, the process of political consciousness construction and the changes occurred by the women, spouses and mothers at the point of insertion in the Ecclesiastic Bases Community (CEBs) and in social movement. The qualitative research has used the oral history as a methodological theoretical resource, from semi-structure interviews to movement leadership. From the narrative of movement's leaders to demand school. States, agency, and power on the ‘peripheries': exploring the archaeology of the later Iron Age societies in precolonial Mberengwa, CE 1300-1600s

Nyamushosho, Robert Tendai 15 September 2021 (has links)
In southern Africa, as elsewhere, the tendency of Iron Age (CE 200-1900) researchers has been to focus on the more prominent places on the landscape, especially those believed by pioneering archaeologists to have been centres of big states. Consequently, most research foci were accorded to Mapungubwe, Great Zimbabwe, Khami, Danamombe and many other places considered as centres (mizinda) of expansive territorial states. However, landscapes away from, and in-between these states and their centres are traditionally viewed as ‘peripheries' where resources that made them prosperous were extracted. The inhabitants of such ‘peripheries' are presented as if they possessed little or no agency. One such area is Mberengwa, a gold-rich area situated between the edges of Mapela, Mapungubwe, Great Zimbabwe, Danamombe, and Khami. This thesis explores the archaeology of Chumnungwa, a drystone-walled muzinda located in Mberengwa. Because of abundant gold, and a landscape optimal for cattle production and crop agriculture, Chumnungwa is often marginalised as a docile ‘periphery' of the more powerful and territorial states that surrounded it. Stratigraphic excavations were performed in different parts of the site to recover artefactual and chronological evidence. Indications are that the inhabitants of Chumnungwa exploited locally acquired resources such as gold, iron, and soapstone, but mixed these with resources from distant areas. Cumulatively, this evidence, when assessed in relation to chronology, suggests that Chumnungwa flourished more or less at the same time as Mapela, and the later phases of Mapungubwe, Great Zimbabwe, Khami, and Danamombe. As a powerful actor in Mberengwa, Chumnungwa also networked and was therefore entangled not only with local, but also with regional, and inter-regional politicoeconomic processes. This suggests it is only a historical invention that can marginalise some landscapes as ‘peripheral', especially in the absence of research, but once attention is directed to them, multiple layers of agency and entanglement emerge.

Processes and patterns of responsiveness to the world of work in higher education institutions

Garraway, James January 2007 (has links)
Philosophiae Doctor - PhD / The rationale for the topic flows out of education policy and societal pressures worldwide which are calling for an ever greater responsiveness from higher education to the workplace in the twenty-first century. Responsiveness to Work (i.e. the world of work) requires collaborative and integrative work between communities of academic and non-academic practitioners. Differences between knowledge and practices at Work and within the academy are broadly acknowledged in the literature, yet the ensuing nature and complexity of interactions between these two communities in curriculum design 'on the ground' is poorly understood. A key point is to recognize that integration as such cannot be the goal: the differences remain, but have to be turned into productive collaboration and joint development, for example, of a curriculum. Productivity here is not used in the sense of the ratio between output achieved and inputs needed, but rather refers to the activity theorists' concept of zones of potential development between two different, interacting activity systems (their way of conceptualizing communities of practice). Productivity is then a measure of the extent to which new hybrid knowledge emerges in the interactive zone with positive outcomes for both systems. Ideally, the integrated curriculum elements look to both Work and academic knowledge. Such productivity involves the acknowledgement of pre-existing boundaries and differences between types of knowledge and the subsequent actions of actors in crossing these boundaries. After sketching the policy backdrop to the issues of responsiveness to Work "on the ground", the first part of the thesis discusses theories of curriculum development, and of boundaries, differences, boundary crossing and maintenance. Inspired by the work of Nooteboom, a model is outlined for optimal difference allowing for innovative and productive curriculum development. The processes and patterns of responsiveness of higher education to the needs of 2 re studied empirically at two interconnected levels: The meso-level of the design of curriculum units; and the micro-level of face-to-face interactions between representatives from Work and the academy as they negotiate how to implement responsiveness. The curriculum units examined are those in which universities have attempted to design units which include aspects of Work. The face-to-face interactions are those between lecturers and Work representatives as they attempt to negotiate what sort of knowledge should be taught in the academy to meet both Work needs and those of the academics. At the meso-level, different cases (in different countries) were studied which together spanned the spectrum of differences between academic knowledge and workplace knowledge. At the micro-level, the focus was on the actual boundary work, and how it might set productive developments in motion. The processes involved are those of the mutual presentation of knowledge difference between work and the academy followed by knowledge transformations. These transformations are in tum enabled by the representatives' actions and their mobilisation of structures to enable bridging between the different types of knowledge. Difference between work and academic knowledge matters. Firstly, difference needs to be recognised and identified, not as a stumbling block to further developments, but as a resource. Secondly, an optimal degree of initial difference, rather than no difference at all, is an enabling factor, in concert with actor strategies, in the development of hybrid work/academic curriculum objects. The insights in micro-interactions can be combined with the analysis of meso-level curriculum development to create a model for productive work towards integration of Work and higher education. This model is supported by the literature discussed in the first part of the thesis, and can actually be used more broadly, for example for productive development and implementation of policy (in this case, for responsiveness to Work).
