ECG Authentication for Mobile Device

Arteaga Falconi, Juan Sebastian January 2013 (has links)
Mobile devices users are storing more and more private and often highly sensitive information on their mobiles. Protective measures to ensure that users of mobile devices are appropriately safeguarded are thus imperative to protect users. Traditional mobile login methods, like numerical or graphical passwords, are vulnerable to passive attacks. It is common for criminal s to gain access to victims' personal information by watching victims enter their passwords into their cellphone screens from a short distance away. With this in mind, a Biometric authentication algorithm based on electrocardiogram or ECG is proposed. In this system the user will only need to touch the ECG electrodes of the mobile device to gain access. With this authentication mode no one will be able to see the biometric pattern that is used to unlock the de vices. This will increase the protection for the users. The algorithm was tested with ten subjects from MCRlab at the University of Ottawa at different days and conditions using a two electrode ECG phone case. Several tests were performed in order to reach the best setting for the algorithm to work properly. The final results show that the system has a 1.41% of chance to accept false users and 81.82% of accepting the right users. The algorithm was also tested with 73 subjects from Physionet database and the results were around the same, which confirms the consistency of the algorithm. This is the first approach on mobile authentication using ECG biometric signals and shows a promising future for this technology to be used in mobiles.

Infants' Perceptions of Mothers' Phone Use: Is Mothers' Phone Use Generating the Still Face Effect?

Kildare, Cory A. 05 1900 (has links)
Using a modified still-face procedure the present study explores 3-6-month-old infants' behavioral and physiological responses to mothers' screen distractions during mother-infant interactions. In the modified phone still-face procedure the neutral face of the traditional still face procedure was replaced with mothers' texting on their mobile phones. Infants' cortisol stress responses to mothers' device use were assessed through the collection of 3 infant saliva samples. Infants' behavioral responses including facial expressions, vocalizations, gaze and self-comforting behaviors were also explored. All mother-infant interactions were videoed recorded and coded for analysis. Thirty-four mother-infant dyads participated, average ages for mothers was 29 years and 4.4 months for infants. As predicted, infants demonstrated the changes in affect associated with the still-face effect, with significant differences in positive and negative affect during the play phases and the phone still face phase. As a whole, infants did not respond with increased cortisol responses, however, when individual differences were explored 47% responded with increased stress during mothers' phone distractions. Mother's frequency and attitudes towards device use were also assessed but were unrelated to infant responses. Implications and directions for future research are discussed.

“Mobiltelefonen har förstört hela min koncentrationsförmåga” : Fem studenters upplevelser av mobiltelefonanvändning på Malmö Universitet / "The mobile phone has ruined my ability to concentrate" : Five Students Experiences of Mobile Phone Usage at Malmö University

Selmani, Paulina, Ismail Arif, Zina January 2022 (has links)
This study investigates students' experiences of mobile phone usage at Malmö University. The purpose of this study is to investigate how students use their mobile phones and if the usage has an effect on their education. The study is conducted through qualitative unstructured interviews with five students at Malmö University and interpreted through a phenomenological perspective. Some similarities are shown in the results, however, the vast majority is overall varying. Similarities that have been concluded are that students mostly use the same applications while being physically present at the University and the majority of the applications that are used are social media based. Facebook Messenger is heavily valued by all participants to communicate with others. There are differing results as to when the usage is most frequent and if the Mobile Phone acts as a distraction or a tool for the student. All participants stated that the Mobile Phone has a tendency to distract. Varying results are explained by the individuals’ level of discipline. Individuals with higher discipline are not as affected by the Mobile Phone as individuals with a lower level of discipline. The reason behind a high usage of the Mobile Phone is explained by Mobile Phone Depandance and a conflict of interest by prioritizing personal goals over academic goals.

An opportunity exploration and best practices analysis for South African mobile value-added companies entering the Ghanaian market

Hatting, Henry Lindo 04 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MBA)--Stellenbosch University, 2015. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Mobile penetration in Ghana and the rest of Western Africa is reaching maturity. Mobile operators are looking for ways to complement their traditional revenue streams, as they cannot merely rely on voice and short message service (SMS) income anymore. Mobile value-added services are a good addition to the portfolio, bringing much needed services like transactional banking, commerce, information and entertainment, insurance, and health information services to mobile users that had difficult to no access to the above services until recently. South African mobile value-added services (VAS) companies that have a good relationship with market leading mobile providers, like MTN, have the opportunity to tap into the Ghanaian market as these services predominantly consist of mobile financial services products with limited functionality. Other specific services like agriculture, health, entertainment and insurance have been identified as mobile subscriber needs in the Ghanaian market. The benefit that South African mobile value-added companies have is that they already have developed similar well-functioning value-added services for the local market where comparisons with the Ghanaian market dynamics can be found. These companies can tailor them to the specific needs and requirements of the market in Ghana, saving them time and having the much-needed first mover advantage with regards to new or better mobile VAS in this market. Ghana is seen as the most stable country in the West African region and ease of doing business is good in comparison with neighbouring countries like Nigeria. Ghana is therefore a good entry point for South African mobile VAS companies in the West African market to truly scale their business model. The researcher chose to investigate the opportunities and best ways to enter this market by interviewing a project manager and managing director of a leading mobile value-added services company doing business in emerging economies, including Ghana. Questionnaires were also sent to employees working for various mobile VAS employers with extensive experience in the research and development of mobile VAS in these markets. The researcher derived information on the difficulty of doing business in Ghana; the current available VAS in the Ghanaian market; factors that hinder business growth in this market specifically; drivers of success; the importance of partnering with leading mobile operators like MTN to be successful; how the South African business model can be compatible; South African and other African trends that will most likely overflow to Ghana; together with the size data-enabled VAS which will form part of the portfolio of products that mobile VAS companies can offer and be market ready for in the near future. The findings of the researcher can be used as a starting framework to further investigate and determine specific market size and to conduct in-depth market analysis of the needs and requirements of mobile subscribers with regards to mobile VAS in Ghana with the vision of moving into the rest of Western Africa.

The modern, mobile me : an exploration of smartphones, being always on, and our relationship with work in the United States

Davis, Jennifer Deering 16 September 2010 (has links)
Experts estimate that by 2013, every adult in the world will own a mobile phone. Mobile technologies are one of the fastest growing and most widely adopted technologies in history. This study seeks to understand the impacts of an increasingly mobile culture in the United States, focusing on how being “always on” impacts individuals' relationships with work. Being always on refers to an individual’s propensity to remain continuously connected to the world through a web-enabled, mobile technology device, such as an iPhone or BlackBerry. Influenced by Clark's (2000) work-family border theory, I conducted 49 in-depth interviews, in order to develop a communicative model of being always on. The model is characterized by using new mobile technologies, needing to be connected, blurring boundaries between work and non-work spheres, identifying with work, working long hours, and having work-life balance. Being always on is linked to a strong work identity and desire for control over one's time. However, being constantly connected with a smartphone also means being more connected to work; it has become easier to work longer hours, have work leak into personal time, and slowly but ultimately lose control over the boundaries between work and non-work domains. Ironically, individuals who are always on in order to gain more control over their time may actually end up giving up more control than they gain. However, always-on individuals actually feel like they have an appropriate work-life balance, which complicates traditional understandings of the meaning of “balance.” Instead, these findings suggest always-on individuals actually “atomize,” a term that refers to the breaking down of communicative tasks into small pieces to can be completed anywhere, at any time, enabling flexibility and control. / text

Linearity and monotonicity of a 10-bit, 125 MHz, segmented current steering digital to analog converter

Bittle, Charles C. 05 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this research is to determine the linearity and monotonicity of the THS5651IDW digital to analog converter (DAC), a prototype of the future Texas Instruments TLV5651, 10-bit, 125 MHz communication DAC. Testing was conducted at the Texas Instruments facility on Forest Lane, Dallas, Texas. Texas Instruments provided test equipment, software and laboratory space to obtain test data. Analysis of the data found the DAC to be monotonic since the magnitude of the differential nonlinearity (DNL) was less than ± 1 least significant bit (LSB) and the integral nonlinearity (INL) was less than ± 0.5 LSB. The study also showed that the DAC has primarily negative DNL although the DNL is well within the desired specification.

Charles University in Prague Faculty of Science Department of Social Geography and Regional Development Jakub Novák MOBILE PHONE LOCATION DATA: POSSIBILITIES OF USE IN GEOGRAPHICAL RESEARCH Synopsis of PhD Thesis Prague 2010 Supervisor: Assoc. Prof. Zdeněk Čermák Jakub Novák Synopsis of PhD Thesis 1 Jakub Novák Synopsis of PhD Thesis 2 INTRODUCTION Spatial mobility of world population has been unbelievably changing during the last decades. People from poor countries are moving thousands of kilometers to developed countries with the vision of material prosperity. Airplanes transport thousands of people in hours to places, where people had travelled much longer recently. Similarly, also an ordinary weekday is for the majority of population connected with relatively long moves between different places of daily activities. Traveling between home, work, kindergartens and schools, shops and leisure activities takes the significant part of our daytime. To capture the measureless amount of particular human creatures in their day-to-day moves through time and space seems to be almost impossible. In fact, it is not so unrealistic. Currently, we are surrounded by a number of electronic devices, which dispose with information about its location or record moving objects in their vicinity. Mobile phone is one of such...

[en] EVOLUTION OF MOBILE PHONES TECHNOLOGY AND THE IMPACT ON THE WASTE OF ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT / [pt] EVOLUÇÃO DA TECNOLOGIA MÓVEL CELULAR E O IMPACTO NOS RESÍDUOS DE ELETROELETRÔNICOS

FABRICIO ROBERTO SENA 06 November 2013 (has links)
[en] In the last century, through new production processes, the industry has increased the variety and availability of products offered to the population, providing better quality of life. This has happened because the inception of series production has offered a greater supply of consumer goods, including the Electrical and Electronic Equipment (EEE). The evolution of electronics technology has provided, and will continue to provide a better quality of life than the one we used to have. However, the technology of these products is continuously evolving, and this brings advantages and disadvantages.
