Dung beetles are of great economic importance due to the removal and burial of dung pads in pastures, enhancing physical and chemical properties of the soil; in addition they are agents of biological control of cattle parasites. The objective of this experiment was to evaluate the influence of irrigation of a pasture by a central pivot, especially during the dry season, on the abundance and richness in species of dung beetles, when compared to a nonirrigated pasture. The experimental area was at Farm Santa Ofélia, located in Selvíria, state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. Collected cattle droppings of differents ages and pitfall traps were weekly baited with fresh dung pads, in an irrigated and a non-irrigated pasture, from April 2004 until April 2005. A total of 54,854 dung beetles were collected, where the most abundant species were Labarrus pseudolividus, Nialaphodius nigritas, Ataenius aequalis, A. crenulatus, A. platensis, A. sculptor, A. scutellaris, Dichotomius bos, D. nisus, D. glaucus, Digitonthophagus gazella, Ontherus appendiculatus, Pedaridium bidens and Trichillum externepunctatum. All species were most abundant during the rainy season. During the rainy season nearly all species were more abundant in the non-irrigated pasture, with A. platensis being the only exception, with larger numbers on the irrigated pasture. During the dry season two species, L. pseudolividus and A. crenulatus, were though more abundant in the irrigated pasture, while for D. gazella, A. scutellaris, A. platensis, D. bos and D. glaucus there were no statistically significant differences between pastures. Results show irrigation affected negatively the abundance of dung beetles, especially during the dry season. It is possible that the fertilizers added to the water used in the irrigation might have played a role in these results.

Diversity and abundance of ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) in Phu Luong, Thai Nguyen province, Vietnam / Sự đa dạng và độ phong phú của các loài kiến (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) ở Phú Lương, tỉnh Thái Nguyên, Việt Nam

Nguyen, Dai Dac, Nguyen, Lien Thi Phuong 24 August 2017 (has links) (PDF)
Three different habitats: secondary forest, acacia plantation, and mixed forests on limestone, were chosen to determine and compare the ant species diversity in these habitats. A total of 24 identified species and 11 morphology species belonging to 20 genera in seven subfamilies were collected using pitfall traps from June 2014 to May 2015. The Shannon-Wiener’s species diversity index indicated that the diversity was the highest in the acacia plantation (2.08), followed by the secondary forest (1.99) and lowest in the mixed forests on limestone (1.83). There are three dominant species in the habitat (I), Pheidole noda, Odontomachus cf. monticola, and Odontoponera denticulate; four dominant species in the habitat (II), Odontoponera denticulata, Carebara diversa, Technomyrmex brunneus and Anoplolepis gracilipes; and only one dominant species in the habitat (III), Anoplolepis gracilipes. The species similarity (S) relatively low may be because of the difference vegetation and condition in the three habitats.

Integration of Startups in Corporations : A qualitative case study on a tech company

Sayari, Farzaneh January 2021 (has links)
Today’s business environment is experiencing different types of collaboration between startup companies and big corporations. The aim of this research is to highlight the challenges that corporations are facing during the integration with startups and identify potential actions which are taken by corporations to address them. Existing literatures in this field have been reviewed to settle down an analytical model as the basis for this research study. This research has conducted a qualitative case study on a big tech corporation in energy sector. Six semi-structured interviews with top managers and decision makers in this corporation have performed to collect the primary data. The findings show that challenges in people integration, speed of integration, communication quality, complex processes and functional area fit do exist while the company under study is integrating with startups and they are taking certain actions to supress these challenges. These actions are utilization of middlemen, existing projects, training, and expert’s evaluation on startups’ maturity level. This research concluded that some of the identified challenges are interconnected and, moreover, it is possible to tackle several challenges with a common action. The results of this thesis can instruct other corporations and give them a better understanding of possible actions on challenges during the integration with startups.

Amphibian Habitat Usage of Two Restored Bogs in Shady Valley, Johnson County, Tennessee.

Lucas, Amy P. 19 August 2009 (has links) (PDF)
Adjacent terrestrial habitat surrounding wetlands are critical for the survival and success of many species that use them. The primary purpose of this study was to determine amphibian movement from adjacent habitats into Orchard Bog, a restored bog located in Shady Valley, Johnson County, Tennessee. In addition, a secondary bog, Quarry Bog, was also studied determining baseline presence/absence data A total of 16 species from six families were observed throughout the study sites. Seven species of anurans, Bufonidae, Hylidae, and Ranidae and nine species of caudates in the families Plethodontidae, Ambystomatidae and Salamandridae were identified. Fourteen of the 16 species were found within Orchard Bog. Data collected can be used to help determine more beneficial land acquisitions and management strategies. Survey methods included pitfall traps, funnel traps, coverboard arrays, and opportunistic surveys.

An Evaluation of American Companies that Outsource Manufacturing to China: Decision-Making and Performance

Favreau, Michael Kenyon 21 March 2007 (has links) (PDF)
The topic of outsourcing ranks at the top of business issues for a wide variety of companies (Wery, 2004; Ezrati, 2004). The majority of American companies believe that offshore-related matters rank as the most strategic decisions that management is expected to make in the next 12 months (Wery, 2004). “Outsourcing in China can help many companies save money, but it can be very frustrating if not done right" (Ting, 2004). The perceived benefits of outsourcing production to China are tremendously enticing, but a lack of understanding of the total costs involved lures many companies into outsourcing when it is not necessarily the best decision. The question then arises and becomes the purpose of this study: How does a company decide if offshore outsourcing is the right decision and, if so, how do they do it properly? The purpose of this research is to search for generally applicable information that can be utilized by American companies in deciding whether to outsource their production to China. The information regarding outsourcing overseas was collected from 22 American firms and 24 Chinese manufacturers to evaluate and provide insight into outsourcing arrangements. In the final chapter of this thesis, a summary is presented of the important findings regarding the purpose of the thesis study.

Faunal communities of temporary wetlands of upland and floodplain public forested lands in north Mississippi

Edwards, Katherine E 11 December 2009 (has links)
I conducted surveys of amphibian, reptile, and small mammal communities surrounding 4 isolated, upland and 6 stream-connected temporary wetlands on Tombigbee National Forest and Noxubee National Wildlife Refuge in north Mississippi from May 2001 - March 2006. Trap captures yielded 17 amphibian species (n = 11,142), 21 reptile species (n = 541), and 10 small mammal species (n = 472). Upland pools supported greater diversity of Ambystomatid salamanders, anurans, lizards, and mice (Peromyscus spp.), than floodplain pools. Factors including landscape position of pools, proximity to alternate water sources, and barriers to dispersal potentially influenced faunal communities of temporary wetlands. Infrared-triggered cameras were used to monitor mammalian activity surrounding ephemeral wetlands to determine potential depredation of pitfall traps. Raccoons (Procyon lotor) accounted for most images (35% total images). I assessed relative effectiveness of sampling techniques to capture and retain herpetiles in presence of depredation. I tested pitfall trap, funnel trap, and pitfall trap combined with exclusion cover along driftence arrays. Overall, pitfall traps of both designs produced more captures than funnels, and excluded-pitfalls yielded greater captures than un-excluded pitfalls for most amphibians. Overall mortality rates were <2% of total captures with anurans accounting for most (63.30%) mortality. I submit that in long-term studies, pitfall traps with exclusion are prudent to limit sampling bias and mortality occurring with depredation of captured herpetofauna. During trapping, pit-traps of both designs yielded incidental captures of small mammals. Capture rates for small mammals were similar in un-excluded pitfall traps and excluded pitfall traps. Southern short-tailed shrews (Blarina carolinensis) and mice accounted for 93% of total captures and suffered 76% and 52% mortality, respectively, potentially due to exposure, starvation, flooding, and/or depredation. Additionally, one species listed as rare in Mississippi was captured during herpetofaunal surveys, oldfield mouse (Peromyscus polionotus). Due to potential impact of pitfall trapping on small mammals, I recommend that researchers either alter trapping methods to address non-target hazards (frequency of checking traps, providing shelter) or work cooperatively using an integrated survey approach for herpetiles and small mammals to limit trap mortality.

Význam přírodě blízkých biotopů pro poskytování ekosystémových služeb střevlíky (Carabidae) na poli řepky ozimé / Importance of natural biotopes for the utilization of ecosystem services by ground beetles (Carabidae) in a winter rape field

KDOLSKÝ, Tomáš January 2014 (has links)
This diploma thesis deals with the importance of semi-natural biotopes for the carabid beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae) and benefits of these beetles for the production of the oilseed rape. Evaluation was done by measuring the diversity of communities of carabid beetles by pitfall trapping followed by the evaluation of total abundance, Shannon´s diversity index and the Shannon´s evenness index in the field oilseed rape and in the adjacent semi-natural biotopes. Diversity was measured at two locations (location A, B). Monitored biotopes of the location A were the meadow, the field, the unmanaged field boundary and the forest. At the site B, monitored biotopes were the meadow and the field. Carabid beetles were captured in one-week intervals continuously from May to September 2013. In total 3076 individuals represented by 78 species were captured. The most numerous species in samples were Poecilus cupreus, Pterostichus melanarius, Poecilus versicolor, Pseudoophonus rufipes and Loricera pilicornis, which formed together 72 % of the total numbers. The monitored biotopes of location A did not differ significantly in total abundance (p = 0.13) nor in the Shannon´s eveness (p = 0.43). They differed by the diversity index (p = 0.03), but this accounted for difference between the field boundary and the forest biotopes (p = 0.04). No difference in the three measured parameters were found by the comparison the field sites and next semi-natural sites at locality A (i.e. meadow A/field A1, forest/field A2), nor by comparing the biotopes field and meadow in both the localities (A, B) in one model (p < 0.05). The results suggest the importance of the immigration of carabid from the semi-natural biotopes into the field, which supports the field populations of carabids and the ecosystem service of biological control provided by them.

Efeitos da defaunação na comunidades de pequenos mamíferos na Mata Atlântica /

Neves, Carolina Lima. January 2010 (has links)
Conventional traps are widely used in studies of non-volant small mammals, but usually lead to sampling bias. Also, microhabitat quality and seasonality effects may influence the estimate of diversity. 2. We compared two small mammal sampling methods: live and pitfall traps. Species richness and number of individuals were our response variables, and field surveys were carried out in a continuous area of the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. Effects of microhabitat variables and seasonality on trappability were also investigated. 3. Pitfall traps captured more number of species and more individuals during the wet season, when compared with live traps. Therefore, pitfall-traps were a better method for estimating the richness and abundance of small mammals, especially semi-fossorial species. 4. Our results showed the importance of considering the sampling effort dispended in live and pitfall traps when comparing the capture efficiency between them. The use of weighted abundance solved trappability problems of underestimation and overestimation in each trap type to capture small mammals. 5. Although the microhabitat is considered an important factor that can influence the number of individuals in the study area, we found no influence of microhabitat on trappability of live and pitfall traps on small mammal community. However, we found that the trap stations with higher basal area of dead trees and ferns captured more individuals of Brucepattersonius soricinus, Oligoryzomys nigripes, and Akodon montensis. 6. We conclude that most small mammal inventories in tropical regions failed to capture the true species richness. Several species considered "rare" and underlisted as data deficient in IUCN criterion could be in fact common / Orientador: Mauro Galetti / Coorientador: Maria José de Jesus Silva / Banca: Marco Aurélio Pizo Ferreira / Banca: Denis Cristiano Briani / Mestre
