Romance and the Psychosocial Adjustment of Indonesian Adolescents

Mengqian Shen (5930852) 15 August 2019 (has links)

The associations between religiosity, popularity, problem behavior, and adolescent romantic involvement were examined with both concurrent regressions and longitudinal cross-lagged models in this three-year longitudinal study of 869 high-school Indonesian Muslim adolescents. A problem behavior construct was formed from three variables (i.e., self-reported tobacco use, self-reported alcohol use, and self-reported deviancy). Religiosity, problem behavior, and adolescent romance were self-reported, and popularity was peer-reported. Indonesian adolescents reported high percentages of romantic involvement across three grades, and their romantic involvement increased with age. In the concurrent analyses, both problem behavior and popularity were positively associated with romance at tenth grade, but the main effect of popularity was significant for girls only. Religiosity was negatively associated with romance for girls at tenth grade. In the cross-lagged models, tenth-grade popularity was positively associated with changes in adolescent romance from tenth to eleventh grade. Bidirectional associations emerged between problem behavior and adolescent romance across three grades. No gender difference emerged in the longitudinal analyses. These patterns of association showed both similarities and differences to those found in the US. This study provides evidence that adolescent romance is intertwined with other aspects of adolescent development in Indonesia, and highlights the importance of exploring the influences of culture on adolescent romance in future studies.

On the Importance of Being Fun: Over Time Associations Between Perceptions of Fun and Changes in Peer Preference and Popularity

Unknown Date (has links)
In this short- term longitudinal study (N=428), the unique predictive association between the positive peer nominated characteristic of being fun and peer status (peer preference and popularity) was assessed in a sample of fourth through sixth grade students. Concurrent hierarchical regression analyses and longitudinal structural equation modeling analyses found that peer nominated fun positively predicted preference and popularity, after accounting for the contribution of predictors potentially confounded with being fun, such as prosocial behavior, academic achievement, relational aggression, and physical aggression. The longitudinal association between fun and preference was qualified by grade in school, such that being fun predicted increases in preference for younger children but not for older children. There were bidirectional associations between peer status and fun; fun predicted increases in peer preference and popularity, but peer preference and popularity also predicted later increases in fun. The findings point to the need to expand existing conceptualizations of the antecedents of peer status beyond known predictors and to examine the developmental shifts in the landscape of children’s peer interactions that make certain characteristics more desirable at different ages. / Includes bibliography. / Dissertation (Ph.D.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2016. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection

In hot pursuit: Gothic virgins and villains in nineteenth-century American fiction

Barrett, Heather Elizabeth 31 July 2017 (has links)
This dissertation investigates how three significant nineteenth-century American female writers strategically transform a central Gothic motif – the virtuous heroine pursued by a villain who lusts for sexual and socioeconomic power – to tell new stories about gendered bodies and the erotic relations between them. Established in the genre-defining British Gothic novels of the late eighteenth century, this popular motif endured throughout the nineteenth century in texts written and read on both sides of the Atlantic. This project examines understudied texts by E.D.E.N. Southworth, Louisa May Alcott, and Julia Ward Howe that exhibit a striking intertextual awareness of the motif, reformulating it to critique the era’s marital and inheritance practices that enable and reinforce persistent gender inequities. These texts presciently recognize the performative nature of gender, centering on protagonists that move fluidly between genders with strategic choices about dress, speech, and social roles. By examining these texts together, this project shows that they anticipate the insights of contemporary feminist and queer theory as their protagonists deliberately calculate how to blend traditionally gendered behaviors and transform sexual threats into situations in which they can either consensually participate or cleverly elude. Chapter One argues that E. D. E. N. Southworth’s popular serial novel The Hidden Hand (1859) rewrites the narrative pattern that situates Gothic heroines as vulnerable to rape by positioning its heroine as aware of her fictional status and therefore capable of using her metafictional knowledge to reconfigure sexually threatening situations. Chapter Two examines how Louisa May Alcott’s sensation tale A Long, Fatal Love Chase (1866) blends traditionally male and female Gothic narratives to cast its heroine as a female Faust figure whose desperate desire for freedom leads her to enter naively into a bigamous partnership with a Mephistophelean man whose relentless pursuit ultimately causes her death. Chapter Three contends that Julia Ward Howe’s recently recovered manuscript The Hermaphrodite (1848) situates its ambiguously sexed but male-identifying protagonist as a Gothic “heroine” who employs unconventional strategies to cope with conventional threats to his physical and financial autonomy and rejects all interpersonal bonds because of the gendered restrictions they impose upon him. / 2019-07-31T00:00:00Z

Skolans Klädkod : En fenomenologisk studie om hur kläder påverkar barn i grundskolan

Turner, Erik, Nestius, Samuel January 2012 (has links)
The purpose of this stydy is to contribute to the understanding of how clothing affects the popularity among children. Our results show that clothing affects popularity and status i a complex interaction with other factors, such as behaviour and associates. Clothing becomes an important factor for popularity sometime during the ages middle school. This is when the children begin to care about theirs, and others, clothing. They have to relate to a social game where clothing affects their position in the status hierarchy. How they relate to this game may vary and some of them try not to compete for popularity, while others act opressively in order to gain status. We have studied this by interviewing youths ages 15-18, on their experiences during junior school. We have interpreted these interviews with an phenomenological method of analysis in order to understand how the youths experience the effects of clothing. We have used Goffmans dramaturgical perspective and Adler & Adlers description of clique dynamics in order to better understand this phenomenon. Jon Swains article The Right Stuff has proven to be of great aid during the planing of our stydy. In his article he explores how clothing affects the children in a junior school in england.

The methods we applied were interviews, quantitative and qualitative content analysis of car commercials and also observation analysis of the 6 swedish TV-channels that shows commercials and have the most viewers, to get an idea how frequently these commercials are shown. The commercials that were applied in this paper was from late 2011 to early 2012. Interviews were made with people from the ages 16 to 76 years old with an equal distribution of sexes. We used 4 different commercials for cars in our interviews with 4 different degrees of the amount of visual effects. We analyzed 6 Swedish TV-channels that show commercials and that have the most viewers to get an idea about how frequently commercials for car are shown. The result of our research showed us that there was no connection between visual effects and popularity and that a larger amount of visual effects can increase the observers tendency to remember a commercial with 15 percentage. Most commercials from the studied period was without visual effects and 13,3% had a larger amount of visual effects

Shades of grey : constituencies, electoral incentives, and the president's legislative agenda / Constituencies, electoral incentives, and the president's legislative agenda

Hickey, Patrick T. 13 July 2012 (has links)
This dissertation investigates how presidents build successful legislative coalitions and enact their agenda into law in the United States Congress. It argues that constituencies and electoral incentives cause members of Congress to respond to the president’s agenda in a systematic manner. The president’s strength in members’ constituencies interacts with members’ electoral incentives to determine whether members will vote for or against the president. The theoretical claims presented in this dissertation are supported by a combination of case studies and quantitative analysis. The empirical analysis utilizes a dataset with observations for every member of Congress from 1957 to the present. I find that constituency-level presidential strength causes systematic variance in members’ response to the president’s agenda. Vulnerable members of Congress are particularly sensitive to the president’s strength in their constituencies, while safe members of Congress are a bit less attentive to their constituencies. These findings contribute to our understanding of American politics by showing that the president’s ability to enact agenda items into law is affected by much more than mere party politics. This conclusion is especially relevant in the modern, polarized era in American politics. / text

We used the greimasian semiotics as a basic theoretical model, especially that sóciossemiótica takes care of non-literary texts social. Investigated a corpus composed of four manifested discourses that portray different times of Lula's political career: President Lula syndicalist early stage denouncing the business class; Squid Congressman it is critical that the maintenance of indirect elections president; Lula and the letter to the Brazilian is the speech that redefines his political career President Lula of Brazil, speech after the first victory at the polls. The speeches were analyzed following the trajectory of the generative course of meaning in the underlying popular search. On the narrative level, we investigated the relationship between the semiotic subjects and their valuables. In the discursive level, there were the interpersonal relations of enunciation and utterance and spatiotemporal projections and key highlight was the ideology underlying the speeches. Studies have shown that semas democracy, citizenship and ethics, implicit in the texts analyzed, have a number of restrictions, including considerations are that: only worker is honest, the poor must live in hope and that maintaining "Storylines" enthusiasts is the solution to the problems that crucify the country. The analysis and comparison of the four texts also showed that the popular arguments are tactical procedures used masterfully in speeches as the intentions of the producers in order to produce a discourse of domination that seems include dominated in decision-making. In fact, they tend to further strengthen domination. This allows us to say that political actors appeal to the doctrines sentimentalists oriented abstract conceit, subordinating reason to feeling.
