This study deals with creative preaching through exploring pneumatology and creativity as prime ingredients for creative preaching. The researcher sees the problem of preaching in terms of the limited resources for proclaiming the very old message of the gospel of Jesus Christ in a fast changing world. Preaching in the reformed tradition is based primarily upon the Bible and the tradition of the church. The researcher suspects that, given the limitations of the age of the source, the preacher runs the risk of boring the congregation, who regularly attends sermons, by becoming irrelevant to their living conditions through having to repeat the same basic message. The researcher suspects that the preacher may run out of ideas and ways of bringing a relevant message in a fresh way, week after week, and begin to employ all kinds of tricks and gimmicks in order to stay relevant. Creative preaching is suggested as answer to this dilemma. Creative preaching is studied within the frame of creativity in service of the Holy Spirit. The study strives to explore the field of creativity from a homiletical perspective and bring the results into a pneumatological context by means of a hermeneutical method, with the aim of designing a basic theory for creative preaching. The first part of the study comprises a literature study of the fields of pneumatology and creativity. Pneumatology is explored in terms of the biblical roots of the use and meaning of the terms rûah, pneuma and paracletos, as well as a brief theological exploration. A pneumatology for preaching includes the Spirit as carrier of the Word and inspirer of the preacher and listener, within the context of the congregation as dedicated space for the working of the Spirit. The second part of the literature study deals with creativity as a human capacity that can be learnt and developed. Creativity is a deliberate dynamic activity that produces new, unexpected and meaningful results through creative observation, creative thinking and creative insight. Empirical research was conducted amongst preachers in the Dutch Reformed Church to ascertain their understanding of creative preaching and their experience of the workings of the Holy Spirit and creativity, in the process of producing a sermon. The research found that preachers understood the Holy Spirit as a vital part of the preaching process. Preachers experience the activity of the Spirit in their normal daily routines as ministers. Preachers do not regard themselves as creative people although they apply principles of creativity primarily in producing visual material for sermons as an additive. The Research found a need for the concept of creative preaching. Creative preaching is developed and described as a process in which the preacher, with the guidance of the Holy Spirit, employs creative methods like observation, association, imagination and creative thinking in the whole process of sermon creation, from choice of Scripture to the presentation of the sermon. The sermon is structured in such a way as not only to be creative but also stimulating the creativity of the listeners. Listening to the unheard stories of children affected by HIV and AIDS in a bereavement process in the Mamelodi township of Tshwane : a narrative research study

Children living in the Mamelodi Township of Tshwane and affected by HIV and AIDS have their own unique challenges they face everyday. These challenges include the poverty context of the township and the stigmatising effect of the community towards these children, compounded by very difficult extended family circumstances and also the struggle with their own identity crisis in the specific developmental phases in which these children find themselves. The focus of this study was to listen to the stories of children affected by HIV and AIDS in the midst of the bereavement process. The emotional responses of children affected by HIV and AIDS within child-headed households experiencing difficulties were identified and explored. A narrative research design was used to capture a chapter in the life stories of three (3) children affected by HIV and AIDS as well as a caregiver who died of AIDS before I completed this study. Data was collected by means of individual interviews, group sessions, and letters which the children wrote to God and the field notes in the form of journal entries written by the researcher, as well as individual feedback and collaboration sessions with the specific caregivers. Data was analysed by means of several phases of theme analysis after which - through a final analysis - psycho-social, emotional and economic response themes were identified. This study found that children affected by HIV/AIDS experience complex emotions in response to their plight. The strongest emotional response themes that emerged, which were reported by all the children were frustration, happiness and love. The family is the most important building system in the church, the society and the whole world. The family is also the cradle and even the womb of the symbolic way in religious education. Almost all families stay in a community where interactions of faith take place. Teenagers leave the church because there are not enough exciting activities in the community to be part of a transformation process for a better life. For that reason the paradigm in this research emphasises an event-driven teenage and family ministry within the community. That means a ministry that accentuates processes, people and relations. Faith development cannot find a place outside the relationship of human beings. Relationship is the password to understanding and the most natural form of relationship is the family. The covenantal family is the most important building system in the church, the society and the whole world. To develop a model for teenage and family ministry for this purpose, the research will emphasise practicing more than theorising, although the dialogue between these two factors in practical theology is of utmost importance. Better relationships within the family, congregation and the community needs better communication. For that reason symbols and rituals are a necessary part of the whole process of teenage and family ministry which is community-directed. God acts within the lives of individuals and groups, but planned the family as the most important unit for interaction. No religion can be without a God and no religion can be without people. All people are born into one or another kind of family and have a God-given need to be part of a group even when ostracised by families or the society. The community of faith never lives in a vacuum - it is always in the midst of cultural reality which is a powerful influence. The faith of this community is embedded in the context of symbols, rituals and narratives. To be busy with practical theology, with this paradigm in mind, needs a threefold exegesis: an exegesis of the Bible, an exegesis of the culture, and an exegesis of the self and the community. Strengthening the inner life of churches and their relation to their immediate communities should be the first priority of the leaders of churches. This study examines the impact of rapid and multi-faceted change (both domestically and inter-nationally over the past four decades) on the Dutch Reformed Church. 2 February 1990 is taken as a water shed date in the history of South-Africa: a speech in parliament of former president FW de Klerk put South-Africa on a course of fundamental change in all spheres of society. The research problem deals with loss the Afrikaans community experiences as a result of societal change. The result of change and loss is long-lasting, collective grief. Grief is defined as the nor-mal, spontaneous reaction to change and loss. Unresolved grief and nostalgia saps a lot of energy and tends to turn a congregation’s attention to itself, thereby contradicting the sound reformed ecclesiology. There is no appropriate practical theological theory to help congregations address unresolved grief. Change, loss and grief are made focus points for theological reflection and empirical study. The guiding hypothesis states that efforts to build up the local church are more likely to succeed, once the “black holes” of unaddressed grief have been dealt with by a collective and on-going process of mourning. Mourning is defined as an intentional and courageous process of letting go of different losses. It is hard work, but the result of deliberate mourning is growth – and eventually a more appropriate, new identity. Unresolved grief causes congregations to get stuck in survival mode, in stead of reaching out to the nations with the gospel of Jesus Christ. Mourning is an antidote (Hamman 2005:35). The research model of G Heitink (1993) is employed to generate fresh practical theological thinking on the research problem: that congregations fail to live according to their missional identity. The hermeneutical cycle explores the “new” practical theology in the framework of a post-Einstein epistemology, as well as the theory of building up the local church in the framework of an ecosystemic meta-theory. The hermeneutical cycle is concluded with the study of contemporary theories of loss, grief and mourning. The empirical cycle reports the results of a qualitative empirical study in three local congregations of the Northern Synod of the Dutch Reformed Church. A rich description is given of 31 respondents’ experience of loss and grief in the new South-Africa. It is established that unresolved grief indeed impacts negatively on efforts to build up the local church. The strategic cycle searches for practical theological wisdom and for a theory that can guide congregations to more productive responses to change and loss. The research boils down to twelve strategic suggestions for local congregations on how to make collective mourning a normal and on-going part of their ministry. Towards a narrative theological orientation in a global village from a postmodern urban South African perspective

As the theme of the study indicates the study is a narrative study seeking to respond to two of the major challenges which congregations are facing within the context of ministry, namely postmodernity and globalization. After seeking a fuller description of these two challenges I sought a theological orientation within such a context (postmodern global village) as well as an ecclesiological praxis that could be transformative and redemptive within such a context. I believe to have found in the narrative orientation an appropriate way for doing theology in the postmodern context. The narrative orientation will guide the story of this study within four movements, namely descriptive theology (stories of need), historical theology (texts and tradition), systematic theology (re-authored story of the past) and lastly strategic practical theology (imagined story of the future). The climax of this journey (story) is in the fusion of horizons between the theory-laden questions of descriptive theology and the historical texts of the Christian faith within the narrative orientation of the study. I discovered that truly transformative and redemptive praxis is only possible within language communities (narrative communities). These narrative communities cannot exist in isolation, but are continuously confronted and relativised by the stories of other communities in the global village and therefore these language communities need to be open to the fragmentation and pluralism of the global village, otherwise they will not be able to respond to the reality of the globalization and postmodernity. The narrative communities needed a story (sacred story) that did not deny the reality of fragmentation and pluralism, but could incorporate this reality into its story. I found this story in the story of the cross and therefore refer to the narrative communities as communities of and under the cross of Christ. These ideas formed the basis for a transformative praxis within a specific congregation, namely Pastoral Redemptive Communities. Dieses zurückgehende Interesse an institutioneller Religiosität steht in scharfem Kontrast zu dem zu beobachtenden Interessenanstieg an spirituellen Themen und Angeboten. In der vorliegenden Forschungsarbeit wird dieses scheinbare Paradoxon untersucht und darüber hinaus erörtert, in welcher Form die Kirchen der Nachfrage nach Sinn und Spiritualität mittels der Rückgewinnung ihrer eigenen spirituellen, mystischen Dimension begegnen können. Dabei geht es unter Berücksichtigung des voranschreitenden komplexen Prozesses weltweit enger werdender Verflech-tungen und umfassender Strukturumbrüche konkret darum, die Chancen und Herausforderungen einer Respiritualisierung der Kirchen zu beleuchten. Darüber hinaus werden Handlungsempfehlungen für eine geistliche Erneuerung der kirchlichen Praxis in Betracht gezogen. / The beginning of the 21st century marked not only a turning point in time but also a crisis point for churches. The decrease in church attendance and the steady decline in church membership demonstrate the lack of the churches’ bonding power in Germany. This declining interest in institutional religion stands in sharp contrast to a noticeable increasing interest in spiritual issues and offers. The research presented here examines this seeming paradox and also discusses how churches can meet the demand for meaning and spirituality by reclaiming their own spiritual, mystical dimension. In considering the increasingly complex processes of global interdependence and major structural changes, this dissertation aims to examine the opportunities and challenges of a re-spiritualization of the churches. Challenging traditional disciplining structures in a girl's high school in Lesotho : exploring alternative ways of doing pastoral care

This research concerns disciplinary practices within a school system in Lesotho. The school that has been researched is a girl’s high school in Maseru (the capital of Lesotho). The school belongs to the Anglican Church. I (the researcher) am a Mosotho man and an English and Religious Studies teacher in this school. For a while I have been concerned about the way punishment happens in the school, often leaving girls feeling shamed and powerless in the face of authority. I have also noticed that these disciplinary practices are losing their effectiveness, in that girls are showing resistance to the system. In other words corporal punishment, which has been the traditional form of discipline, is proving ineffective in today’s world. The researcher also considers this form of discipline abusive of power. It is in the light of this that I worked within this system, both with pupils, as well as teachers, to explore alternative practices that might work with pupils, that are respectful of all parties concerned. L’identité chrétienne orthodoxe est-européenne à la rencontre de la diversité culturelle : étude empirico-herméneutique des communautés immigrantes bulgare, moldave et roumaine à Montréal

Cette thèse étudie le rapport entre l’identité chrétienne orthodoxe et la diversité culturelle en diaspora. Le problème de départ de cette recherche est l’invisibilité des communautés orthodoxes dans l’espace public montréalais, le manque d’interaction entre la société et les communautés orthodoxes et l’isolement ecclésial et culturel des paroisses orthodoxes engendré par le principe ethno-national. La recherche s’attarde sur cet état de fait et en propose une analyse théologique. La méthode praxéologique, empirico-herméneutique, permet de procéder à l’étude de la réalité et de devenir voice over, c’est-à-dire l’interprète des personnes immigrantes. La recherche empirique est basée sur l’observation, une enquête à l’aide de trois questionnaires, de 13 entrevues auxquelles ont participé 68 personnes originaires de Bulgarie, Moldavie et Roumanie, nouveaux arrivants, bien-établis, prêtres et membres des conseils ecclésiaux, ce qui constitue un corpus exhaustif. L’herméneutique est opérée à partir de concepts qui sont déconstruits et reconstruits pour refléter la réalité et le discours des personnes concernées. La recherche fait le constat de l’existence de dynamiques complexes d'isolement et d’ouverture. Quatre types de comportements à la rencontre de la diversité culturelle se précisent. Ce rapport ambivalent à la diversité culturelle résulte non seulement des attitudes historiquement ancrées dans la conscience des peuples est-européens pour préserver leur identité culturelle, mais aussi de leur expérience de l’immigration, du choc culturel, des barrières linguistiques, des difficultés financières et des défis liés à la réalisation professionnelle. Les paroisses ethno-nationales deviennent des points d’ancrage linguistique et identitaire tant religieux que nationaux, mais aussi des îlots de paix, d’un véritable « chez-soi » spirituel. L’analyse est opérée à la lumière de la théologie de l'amour trinitaire et de l'interculturalité. Ces théories, théologique et sociale, sont mises en parallèle. L’étude démontre qu’il existe une contradiction évidente avec la réalité d’invisibilité, d’isolement culturel et de fragmentation ecclésiale des communautés orthodoxes d’Europe de l’Est dans la diaspora montréalaise, malgré certains signes d’ouverture. Elle débouche sur la proposition de quelques pratiques concrètes, à la fin de la démarche. / The thesis studies the relation between the Orthodox Christian identity and cultural diversity in a diaspora context. The problem being examined herein is the invisibility of the Orthodox communities in the public sphere of the city of Montreal, Quebec, Canada, the ecclesial and cultural isolation of Orthodox parishes based on an ethnic principle and the lack of interaction between society and Orthodox communities. The research aims to explore this behaviour and suggests theological guidelines to analyze it. Using the empirico-hermeneutic method, reality of immigrant people is attentively studied and their voices are “translated”, the thesis being voice over for them. The empirical study stems from the observation, the administration of three questionnaires, and 13 interviews with 68 people from Bulgaria, Moldavia and Romania, newcomers and settled-ins through, as well priests and church councils through, making this research a thorough process. The hermeneutic aspect of the research consists of concepts which are de-constructed and then re-constructed around immigrant people in order to zoom in on those concepts according to people’s life experience. The study reveals complex and simultaneous dynamics of isolation and openness. In fact, four types of behaviour have been identified upon contact with cultural diversity. This ambivalent relation to cultural diversity emerges not only from historical attitudes from East-European peoples in order to protect their cultural identity but also following the cultural shock they experienced on their arrival, as well as their financial difficulties, the language barriers and their struggles to professional realisation. Ethnic congregations hence become safe, linguistic, and identity gatherings where people can worship and feel at home. The analysis is conducted through a love paradigm of the Trinitarian theology and of interculturality. Those theoretical, social and theological aspects are then compared and show a distortion with the reality of how invisible, isolated and ecclesially fragmented the East-European communities are in the Montreal diaspora context. Some practical solutions are presented at the conclusion of this research.

Exploring economics neo-pentecostalism and scientific rationality: a critical reflection on imagining a better pentecostal theology

Abstracts in English and Tsonga / This study explored the lack of integrating a scientific imagination and rationality in the hermeneutic and theological practices of neo-Pentecostal churches in the town of Livingstone, Zambia. Although the vantage point of the study was primarily practical theology, the researcher adopted both an interdisciplinary and a multidisciplinary approach. This assisted the researcher in understanding the different theoretical nuances that inform neo-Pentecostal theological practices as propagated by its proponents. An in-depth scientific analysis premised on the critical theory approach was conducted to find out whether or not neo-Pentecostal communicative practices contribute positively to the economic conditions of local church members in Livingstone. The theological framework for this study was based on the “pastoral cycle”, which ought to be at the very heart of any contemporary practical theology (Ballard & Pritchard 2006). The research methodology consisted of data collection, interpretation and analysis (comparing and contrasting primary sources in the light of the data collected). Research participants' personal narratives of their experience of neo-Pentecostal practices were heard in a semi-structured format. These aided in establishing ecclesiastical views on the causes of the lack of integrating a scientific imagination and rationality in neo-Pentecostal spiritual experience; and consequently informed the study on whether the current theological orientations of neo-Pentecostal congregations in Livingstone have a positive or negative impact on the economic conditions of members. Addressing the psycho-spiritual bereavement needs of HIV and AIDS orphans and other vulnerable adolescents : a narrative pastoral care approach

ENGLISH: This study looks at the bereavement of adolescents left orphaned by and vulnerable to the HIV and Aids crisis that is crippling the continent of Africa. Their bereavement and the psycho-spiritual issues relating to this bereavement are examined by means of postfoundationalism as an approach to practical theology along with the narrative approach to research and therapy. This is done by integrating these approaches with the art of storytelling within the unique African context. By listening to the stories of ten adolescents under the care of PEN, a Non Governmental Organisation (NGO), this research gives them the opportunity to express their own unique stories of bereavement. Stories that would otherwise have been silenced by the wave of bereavement in the wake of countless deaths worldwide due to the HIV and Aids infection. It looks holistically at the multiple losses these adolescents have suffered and consequently how this has affected them not only physically, but also especially emotionally and spiritually. In light of the above, this research attempts to show how these adolescents are in the process of – by means of storytelling – reformulating the story of their lives and the lives of those they care about in the true spirit of Ubuntu to find hope anew in the proverbial pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. AFRIKAANS: Hierdie studie fokus op die verlies wat tieners ervaar wat wees gelaat is deur die MIV en Vigs pandemie wat besig is om die vasteland van Afrika te verlam. Hulle rousmart en die gepaardgaande psigies-spirituele aangeleenthede word ondersoek deur middel van die postfondamentele benadering tot praktiese teologie in samehang met die narratiewe benadering tot navorsing en terapie. Hulle rousmart en die gepaardgaande psigies-spirituele aangeleenthede word ondersoek deur middel van die postfondamentele benadering tot praktiese teologie in samehang met die narratiewe benadering tot navorsing en terapie. Deur te luister na die stories van tien tieners onder die sorg van PEN, ‘n Nie- Regeringsorganisasie (NRO), gun hierdie navorsing hulle die geleentheid om hul eie unieke stories van smart te vertel.
