A Comparative Analysis Between a Preacher's Practice and Homiletic TheoryCastillow, Curtis 01 May 2010 (has links)
This qualitative research compared the practice of an expert preacher to core concepts in homiletic theory (the art and craft of preaching), searching for discrepancies between what theory suggested and what the preacher practiced. It also sought to validate that the preacher practiced what homiletic theorists prescribed and to inform homiletic theory by describing strategies he employed unlike those espoused in homiletic theory.
To discover whether the participant's practice was congruent with theory, I first identified seminal theories. They were classified into the following modified version of Broadus's categories of ideal preaching: (a) content, (b) arrangement, (c) introduction, transition, and conclusion, (d) style, (e) illustrations, and (f) the delivery. I created a rubric from the literature review as a standard from which I compared the participant's audio and video sermons. The rubric had six categories, 39 subcategories, and 58 characteristics of ideal preaching to which the preacher was compared. The analysis included frequency counts of certain words, phrases, illustrations, and the results of the Flesch's Reading Ease score. To find strategies employed by the participant but not represented in the literature, I also used an inductive method to analyze the integral parts and patterns of the sermons.
The analysis revealed that the preacher's practice was congruent with theory yet the preacher had never read homiletic theory. Because the preacher was able to sidestep the need to study homiletics, it was concluded that for him preaching was an intuitive art/craft.
The research also revealed that the preacher had a personal homiletic philosophy wherein everything in his preparation, message design, and delivery centered on relevancy. The preacher felt strongly that the message had to apply to his listeners in meaningful ways. The preacher's strength centered not so much on how he presented, but what he presented. His sermons were filled with what homiletic theorist Sunukjian called "timeless truths." They made the preacher's sermons insightful, hopeful, and most of all, relevant to his listeners.

"A Little Labour of Love": The Extraordinary Career of Dorothy Ripley, Female Evangelist in Early AmericaEverson, Elisa Ann 03 May 2007 (has links)
In the past two decades or so, feminist historians have sifted through the copious illustrations of the turbulent, emotion-ridden years of early nineteenth-century American revivalism to devote considerable attention to the rise of female evangelism. Despite the notable upsurge, scholars generally remain untutored about the plethora of powerful female preachers who devoted their lives to advancing the kingdom of God. This dissertation seeks to resurrect the voice of one such woman: Dorothy Ripley (1767- 1831), an evangelist from Whitby, England, whose personal and evangelical awakening rivaled the revolutionary power of the revivalism sweeping the new Republic. Citing her direct mandate from God to preach, Dorothy grasped religion and reshaped it into a spiritually, culturally, and politically altering device. She became the first woman to preach before the U.S. Congress, composed five literary volumes (most of which she published herself and in multiple editions), crossed the Atlantic as many as nineteen times, and traveled up and down the Eastern Seaboard to preach among the different levels of society in a variety of settings. As an unlicensed, unsanctioned preacher, Dorothy defied powerful social and religious conventions by her solitary travel, scriptural exegesis, public performances, and presumption of the patriarchally assigned and protected role of preacher. She strove to proclaim the gospel even at the expense of reputation, family ties, home and hearth, marriage and motherhood, and personal security. Her rebelliousness allowed her to rise above the backstage role commonly assigned to, and accepted by, women of the early Republic. Her works serve as cultural artifacts by providing eyewitness accounts spotlighting the problems inherent in the formative years of a Republic reeling with the headiness of self-rule: the tension between Protestantism and American capitalism, the conflict between an emerging elite and the increasingly dissatisfied lower class, the misogyny of the cult of domesticity and separate spheres, the embryonic stages of widespread social reform, and the virulent ethnocentrism of the rhetoric of Manifest Destiny. Through an examination of her spiritual autobiographies, this dissertation seeks to enrich scholarly understanding of women’s influence in the evolution of evangelization, abolitionism, women’s rights, and social service.

La louange à Louis XIV entre "balladins" et prédicateurs 1661-1697 : renouveler la question du discours sur le roi grâce à la louange contenue dans les divertissements et la prédication / Praise to Louis XIV according to "balladins" and preachers 1661-1697 : the question of the discourse about the King through praise contained in entertainments and preachingGoudard, François 25 June 2015 (has links)
The study of Louis XIV’s image is not new. Exploring the speeches on his Person is it more. "How do people talk about Louis XIV “will be preferred to the age old question” how did Louis XIV get himself talked about". The way it proceeds (celebrating the king) matters as much as the result (the image of the king). This phenomenon is often contemplated and reduced to a vast operation of communication. Challenging that it gives rise to an image (representation) would be wrong. Nevertheless it appears essential to reassess its contribution to the homage to the king. The term "celebration" highlights that duality. The celebration of Louis XIV can be studied irrespective of traditional work materials but through preaches and funeral orations. Together with entertainments, the praise to the king then appears in all its extent and complexity. The first chapter describes the praise as a way to promote the king as well as a social cultural rite. It focuses on how the praise has penetrated some entertainments, preaches and funeral orations in a common cultural universe beyond their respective differences. A second chapter investigates more specifically the actors of the praise with an attempt to identify those actors, to penetrate their motivations without forgetting that Louis XIV has danced in the ballets and took pleasure and interest in entertainments. Finally a study of the public often comprising the same people complete the study. The last chapter is devoted to the portrait of the king in the praise. It is possible to come close to this portrait with the theory of the king's two bodies or by the widely spread idealized image of an absolute monarch. The feeling of those people for whom the image was intended deserves to be asked. It thus leaves room for certain issues such as a possibility of critical analysis by public or patterns of acceptance of the various texts and of the praise itself.

This paper intends to analyze the ways in which preachers have been sustained in the context of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Angola (IELA) from its inception to the current days. The economic difficulties, the social conditions of the preachers and the lack of teaching the Word of God related to the contributions for the cause of the Christian faith, to the members of the congregations have presented great limitations to the pastoral and missionary work. Consequently, this affects the development of the IELA in all dimensions: economic, geographic, numerically and poimenically. The IELA seeks paths which point in the direction of autonomy in a broad sense. Therefore, the research aims at helping in the comprehension of the context in which the church finds itself, thus permitting a clearer perception of the limits and possibilities of the work of the Lutheran preachers in Angola.

An analysis of sermons : expository preaching in the Southern African contextJohnston, Clanton Clyde 04 1900 (has links)
This doctoral thesis entails a research project to determine
whether grass roots preachers in a southern Africa context can be
instructed to prepare effective expository sermons. In order to
make that determination it was necessary to first collect and
analyze expository sermons from such preachers prior to any
instruction. Then, on the basis of instruction in expository
preaching in a seminar format, it was necessary to collect and
analyze additional sermons from the same preachers.
To that end we conducted two five-day seminars in Zimbabwe
and South Africa respectively. The content of those seminars
included two major elements. The first was a theology of
preaching that is detailed in Chapter 1. Within a theology of
preaching we have given treatment to various topics including the
need for a theology of preaching, the Old Testament basis for
preaching, the New Testament mandate for preaching, a definition
and defense of expository preaching, and a discussion of the
necessary qualities of effective expository preaching. The
second element of the seminars involved a method of preaching
detailed in Chapter 2. Within the method of preaching we have
given treatment to various topics, including the role of the
Holy Spirit in preaching, exegesis of the sermon text, and
making the transition from the text to the completed sermon.
Given the foundational material of Chapters 1 and 2, we
developed the seminar materials found in Chapter 3. Chapter 4
includes the schedules by which the sermons were analyzed. Each
sermon was subjected to the same schedule to determine its
effectiveness as an expository sermon. Those results are then
analyzed in Chapter 5 leading to the conclusion that grass roots
preachers in a southern Africa context can indeed be instructed
to preach effective expository sermons. / Practical Theologyy / D. Th. (Practical Theology)

L'Ordre des Prêcheurs au miroir de l'estampe française et flamande (1594-1720) / The Order of Preachers through the Mirror of French and Flemish Engravings (ca. 1594-1720)Rousseau, Claire 29 September 2018 (has links)
This thesis focuses on the representation of the members of the Dominican Order as found in seventeenth century engravings. It seeks to examine the role of the French and Flemish engravers commissioned by the Order of Preachers in order to stress its social and moral importance. The engravings are an integral part of an artistic heritage with his own language, challenging our perception of the Dominican story, and more generally of the history itself. This has enabled us to question the contribution and the capacity of images either to reflect or to distort, like a mirror, the spiritual life and the theological debates in both the Church and in society during the seventeenth century.
