It is carried on a review of conceptual BSC perspective hierarchy models and of studies on higher education institution in Brazil and worldwide. From a BSC model with three indicators at each perspective is carried on a case study with directors and coordinators of a private higher education institution with a descriptive and multivariate analysis using cluster analysis. The main findings point to a different perception of respondents on the importance level of the perspectives with a higher importance level given to Learning and Growth and Process that to Customer and Financial. Particularly, the financial perspective got a importance level significantly lower that the others, what suggests an inconsistency on the strategy deployment on the institution considered in terms of the perception of the managerial levels of the importance level of the perspectives / Esta Tese investiga de modo explorat?rio a id?ia de consist?ncia estrat?gica usando como ferramenta para sua verifica??o uma modelagem dos indicadores de desempenho de Institui??o de Ensino Superior (IES) privada na abordagem do Balanced Scorecard (BSC). ? feita uma revis?o dos modelos conceituais de hierarquia das perspectivas do BSC e de estudos em institui??es de ensino superior no Brasil e no mundo. O Objeto de Estudo dessa Dissertação é a Faculdade Nossa Cidade - FNC. IES situada no município de Carapicuíba, SP. O Objetivo Geral da Dissertação foi o de descrever em profundidade o diagnóstico situacional da FNC em dois períodos distintos no tempo, quanto aos esforços de comunicação para a divulgação do processo seletivo 2012 e 2013. Como Objetivos Específicos, a Dissertação buscou analisar de maneira sistemática os dados coletados, avaliar o retorno dos investimentos em comunicação da IES e propor orientações para o desenvolvimento da Campanha de Comunicação Mercadológica da FNC para a venda dos cursos oferecidos. Foram utilizados como Procedimentos Metodológicos a Pesquisa Exploratória com a utilização de Estudo de Caso, dividido em duas Fases, a saber: Fase 1- Delimitação das teorias que sustentam o arcabouço teórico sobre Educação Superior no Brasil e a atual educação superior como \"negócio rentável\", além da delimitação teórica sobre Gestão Mercadológica para empresas de Serviços, Retorno de Investimentos em Comunicação, e Planejamento de Comunicação. Fase 2 - Pesquisas Primárias (entrevistas com o corpo diretivo da IES, com os docentes e com os discentes ingressantes e concluintes), e Pesquisas Secundárias - análise dos registros das campanhas do processo seletivo 2012 e 2013, e a análise dos resultados do Relatório da Comissão Própria de Avaliação (CPA - 2014). De acordo com o diagnóstico apresentado a FNC apresenta significativos pontos fortes institucionais, pedagógicos, financeiros, de marketing e de gestão e organização. Os pontos a melhorar são de conhecimento da alta direção e têm recebido atenção por parte da direção pedagógica, que responde pela IES junto ao MEC. O enquadramento e classificação dos cursos oferecidos pela FNC na Matriz BCG foram confirmados pelo cálculo do MCP de cada um dos cursos na avaliação do período 2012-2014. Para a análise GE, após a realização dos cálculos de notas ponderadas para a atratividade de mercado e para o posicionamento do negócio em seu mercado, a FNC foi enquadrada como um negócio de alta atratividade de mercado e alto posicionamento do negócio em seu mercado. O diagnóstico demonstrou, ainda, que a FNC realiza ações para o atendimento dos 14 objetivos da comunicação e essas ações são reconhecidas pela comunidade acadêmica. A análise do retorno de investimento em comunicação indicou que a FNC apresenta viabilidade econômica, financeira e patrimonial sólidas. Como orientações ao Planejamento da Comunicação o texto indica que a FNC precisa administrar de maneira consciente suas promessas de serviço; deve manter canal aberto de informações junto aos candidatos à matrícula na IES e, sobretudo, junto ao corpo docente e corpo discente da Faculdade; deve também educar seus diferentes públicos, sobretudo os alunos, uma vez que sua entrega de serviços é de característica de alta participação do cliente em todo o processo e deve, ainda, cuidar com muita atenção da comunicação interna junto aos funcionários técnico-administrativos e docentes. Tudo isso pode ajudar o processo de comunicação a fim de evitar que se gere insatisfação por parte do cliente. / The study object of this thesis is the Faculdade Nossa Cidade - FNC. IES in the municipality of Carapicuiba, SP. The Dissertation of the General Purpose was to describe in depth the situational diagnosis of FNC in two different periods in time, as the communication efforts for the dissemination of the Selection Process in 2012 and 2013. As specific objectives, the dissertation aimed to analyze systematically the data collected, evaluate the return on investments in communication IES and propose guidelines for the development of the FNC Communication Campaign for the sale of courses offered. They were used as Methodological Procedures exploratory research with the use of case study, divided into two phases, namely: Phase 1 - Delimitation of theories that support the theoretical framework on Higher Education in Brazil and the current higher education as a \"profitable business\" in addition to the theoretical definition of marketing management for service companies, Investment Return on Communication and Marketing Communication Planning. Stage 2 - Primary Research (interviews with the governing body of IES, with teachers and with students entering and graduating), and Research Secondary - analysis of records of the campaigns of the Selection Process in 2012 and 2013 and the analysis of the results of the Report Committee for Assessment (CPA - 2014). According to the diagnosis introduced to FNC presents significant institutional, pedagogical, financial strengths, marketing, and management and organization. The areas for improvement are the knowledge of senior management and have received attention from the pedagogical direction, which responds by IES with the MEC. The framework and classification of courses offered by the FNC in the BCG Analysis were confirmed by MCP calculation of each of the courses in the evaluation period 2012- 2014. For GE Analysis, after the purposes of the calculation of weighted grades for market attractiveness and the business positioning in its market, FNC was framed as a highly attractive market business and high positioning of the business in your market. The diagnosis has also shown that the FNC takes action to meet the 14 Objectives of Communication and these actions are recognized by the academic community. Analysis of the communication payback indicated that the FNC has economic feasibility, financial and solid equity. As guidelines to Communication Planning for FNC must manage consciously their service promises; it must maintain an open channel of information from the candidates for enrollment in IES and especially with the faculty and student body of the Faculty; It must also educate its stakeholders, particularly students, since its delivery of services is of high share of customer feature throughout the process and must also take care carefully of internal communication with the technical and administrative staff and teachers. All this can help the communication process in order to avoid that generate dissatisfaction by the customer.

To answer the question: ‘What organizational conditions favor occur and how the practices of bullying from the perspective of teachers of courses in Business Administration in private HEIs in São Paulo?’, a survey was conducted by a qualitative approach, guided by the interpretive paradigm, and the data collected through interviews and document analysis were subjected to content analysis. The results showed that bullying occurs in many instances, is motivated both by personal questions, as per organizational issues and has multiple faces, which manifest themselves in different forms of violence suffered by the teacher. The study contributes to the understanding of the practice of harassment in the academic environment, revealing that this phenomenon has as elements triggers the placement of private HEIs in the competitive landscape in which they operate and the weakness or absence of this rules and procedures relating to the prevention and treatment of cases of bullying. / Este estudo tem como objeto a investigação do assédio moral a partir da perspectiva de professores em cursos de Administração de Empresas de Instituições de Ensino Superior (IES) privadas na cidade de São Paulo, sendo seu objetivo analisar as práticas de assédio moral e das condições organizacionais que as favorecem. Para responder à questão: ‘Quais condições organizacionais favorecem e como ocorrem as práticas de assédio moral, na perspectiva de professores dos cursos de Administração de Empresas em IES particulares na cidade de São Paulo?’, foi realizada uma pesquisa de natureza qualitativa, norteada pelo paradigma interpretativo, sendo que os dados colhidos mediante entrevistas e análise documental foram submetidos à análise de conteúdo. Os resultados evidenciaram que o assédio moral ocorre em diversas instâncias, é motivado tanto por questões de ordem pessoal, quanto por questões organizacionais e possui múltiplas faces, que se manifestam nas diferentes formas de violência sofrida pelo docente. Este estudo contribui para a compreensão das práticas de assédio no ambiente acadêmico, revelando que este fenômeno tem como elementos deflagradores o posicionamento das IES privadas no cenário competitivo em que estão inseridas e a fragilidade ou inexistência de normas e de processos referentes à prevenção e ao tratamento de casos de assédio moral.

Managing a private higher education institution within the current higher regulatory context in South Africa

The South Africa higher education environment has been regulated through the enactment of policies promulgated by the governments of the day since the establishment of South African higher education. Even in the early days, the higher education sector comprised both public and private higher education institutions. Since South Africa’s democratic election in 1994, the higher education environment has been altered by the current government by means of policy enactment. Limited research has been conducted on the impact of the current regulatory context on the management of a private higher education institution. Therefore, the focus of this study was to determine how a private higher education institution within the current higher regulatory context in South Africa is managed. A qualitative research methodology was used to study the phenomenon. For this purpose, a case study, an accredited and registered private higher education institution was identified and individual interviews conducted with its six managers. The study adhered to ethical principles and techniques to enhance the validity/trustworthiness of the findings. The study found that the current regulatory enactment that was initiated under the new democratic government elected in 1994 had far-reaching implications for the private higher education sector. As a consequence, management structures, policies and procedures, quality assurance processes and procedures and management functions were altered. However, some of the regulatory criteria still have an impact on the management functions as private providers still struggle for full recognition by the government. / Educational Studies / M. Ed. Abstract in English, Afrikaans and Xhosa / Blended learning is referenced as the “best of both worlds” (Snart, 2010:xvi), which integrates Face-to-Face instruction with online learning. With interest in incorporating blended learning within the higher education curricula expanding, many private higher education institutions seek to understand how they can use educational technology effectively in blended learning to enhance undergraduate students’ learning engagement. This study investigated the nature and extent of private higher education students’ learning engagement in blended learning programmes within a private higher education provider. Through the lens of Bandura's (2000:121, 2009:180) Social Cognitive Theory, the study investigated private higher education students’ learning engagement in blended learning during the completion of their qualification and how it impacted teaching and learning. A descriptive quantitative research design was adopted, coupled with a positivist paradigm of inquiry. Utilising a cross-sectional survey it acquired descriptive data from a sample population of 567 respondents who answered the study’s research questions. The study found that student orientation programmes are associated with students’ perceived self-efficacy, subsequently affecting their engagement in blended learning programmes directly, and through the impact on outcome expectations, goals and socio-structural impediments. Additionally, socio-structural facilitators impacted outcome expectations and student engagement. The study’s results established a new framework, namely Social Cognitive Student Engagement in Blended Learning. / Gemengde leer word dikwels die “beste van twee wêrelde” genoem (Snart, 2010:xvi) aangesien onderrig nie alleen van aangesig tot aangesig nie, maar ook aanlyn geskied. Gesien die stygende belangstelling in die inskakeling van gemengde leer by hoëronderwysleerplanne, ondersoek talle private hoëronderwysinstellings maniere om opvoedkundige tegnologie in gemengde leer te gebruik om voorgraadse studente se leerbetrokkenheid te verbeter. In hierdie studie is ondersoek ingestel na die aard en omvang van studente se leerbetrokkenheid in die gemengdeleerprogramme wat by ʼn private verskaffer van hoër onderwys aangebied word. Hierdie studie het deur die lens van Bandura se sosiaal-kognitiewe teorie (2000:121, 2009:180) gekyk na studente se leerbetrokkenheid by gemengde leer in die verwerwing van ʼn kwalifikasie, en die uitwerking daarvan op onderrig en leer. Die navorsingsontwerp was deskriptief-kwantitatief en die ondersoekparadigma positivisties. Abstracts in English, Afrikaans and Zulu / This study was conducted to address a distinct lack of knowledge regarding strategizing as a function of social interaction. Social researchers like Critchley contend that an organisation should essentially be regarded as an evolving product of people’s continuous interaction resulting in shared meaning. In subscribing to Critchley’s premise, and assuming that strategy inquiry is an empirically informed social science, the current study consequently set out to gain an understanding of how social interaction between practitioners shapes organisational strategizing and subsequent strategic outcomes. The strategy-as-practice perspective served as an integrative lens for the current research. This perspective that subscribes to the practice turn in social research, focuses on the actual practices (praxis) of strategy actors (practitioners) within unique organisational settings with unique strategizing tools, techniques and artefacts (practices). Informed by the philosophical underpinnings of a pragmatic worldview and a qualitatively driven mixed methods approach, a case study design allowed for in-depth analyses of multiple sources of empirical data to facilitate an understanding of the research phenomena. In addition to exploring social interaction during episodes of strategy practice, the current research investigated how practitioners’ motivations to interact shape and are shaped by ongoing interactions and meaning making. The current study also examined how external and internal organisational contexts, including organisational practices, influence and are influenced by ongoing social interactions. Two small private higher education institutions that reflect the typology of most private providers in the South African higher education landscape were selected for the case study. These private providers face numerous challenges in a tough current economic climate. Private providers further fulfil a pivotal role in the demand absorption of a growing need for higher education in South Africa. The main findings of the current research confirmed that strategizing at the two case study organisations is indeed mainly a function of social interaction. Strategizing is mostly shaped by people as emotional beings. Strategizing is the product of sometimes-irrational interactions and subsequent constantly evolving shared meanings and relationships between people. It is the social interaction between strategy actors during episodes of strategy praxis that serves as a social mechanism in transforming strategizing intent into strategy outcomes. Different strategy actors employ a wide array of techniques to get their ideas or views accepted during strategy-related interactions. Findings indicated that the selected strategies at the two case study organisations are mostly not based on objective reasoning linked to a clear plan or vision, but rather on strategy actors’ abilities in getting their ideas to be accepted by the group. Findings further suggested that the owners of the respective case study organisations strongly influence how things are done during episodes of strategy praxis. Strategizing at both companies is informal and comprises mostly of reacting to challenges and dealing with crises. Both organisations follow a differentiation strategy. Safety and security; employment prospects, as well as certain academic issues like small classes for better learning can be regarded as areas of competitive advantage for both. The proliferation of private providers, significant investment in private higher education, as well as private provision’s important demand absorption role suggest that there is a definite future for private higher education in South Africa. The intended main contribution of the current research is to facilitate an understanding of how social interaction as social mechanism shapes strategizing and resultant strategic outcomes. The understanding of the social world supposedly increases as the collection of the compatible causal mechanisms grows – where mechanisms reveal how the observed relationships between phenomena are created and are explained. The findings of the current research could thus serve as a building block in accumulating social science theory regarding this unexplored avenue of interaction-driven strategy research. To this end, a conceptual framework is proffered to guide similar future studies. The current study provided a glimpse into the strategy-workings of two small private higher education providers and ultimately contributes towards the growing body of knowledge regarding private provision within the South African higher education landscape / Hierdie studie is uitgevoer om die kennelike gebrek aan kennis oor strategie as ʼn funksie van sosiale interaksie aan te spreek.
