Uncontrolled Variables in Standardized Psychiatric Patient Methodology

Dinsmore, Kimberly R., Glenn, L. Lee 01 December 2017 (has links)
The conclusions of Sarikoc, Ozcan, and Elcin (2017) had weaknesses. An uncontrolled variable (time spent in training) could account for the results. The difference in the control and experimental groups was not statistically significant. Acceptance of the hypothesis that video with interviews is more effective than videos alone is premature.

The Geography of Mental Health: Housing Ex-Psychiatric Patients

Elliott, Susan 04 1900 (has links)
As a result of deinstitutionalization in the 1960s and 1970s, a great many chronically mentally ill psychiatric patients were released into an ill-prepared community. One of the major problems facing the discharged patient is housing. This thesis focuses on the housing situation and experience of the chronically mentally ill, which is recognized as one of several sets of interrelated environmental factors affecting their ability to cope in the community. The housing situations of a sample of 66 chronically mentally ill individuals in Hamilton were examined by way of cross-sectional and longitudinal survey data collected as part of a larger study of the community environment factors affecting the quality of everyday life among the chronically mentally ill. The specific objectives of the research were: (a) a description of the housing experience of the chronically mentally ill in Hamilton; ( b ) an analysis of the residential mobility of the research sample; (c) a description of the expressed housing need of the chronically mentally ill individual in the community; and, (d) a comparison of the need expressed by the sample with the normative housing need espoused in the literature in order to gauge the 'fit' between the two. The data show the sample clustered in the inner-city of Hamilton in lodging-home types of accommodation. An analysis of residential mobility reveals two trends. First, the sample have little control over their living situation. Second, there are two sub-groups within the sample: one which is relatively residential l y stable and one which is excessively mobile. A logit analysis shows the factors affecting mobility to be level of education and preference for an independent living situation. Knowledge of these factors could aid in the task of matching client needs to appropriate living situations. An analysis of the expressed housing need of the sample reveals that the long-term housing goal expressed by the sample is not dissimilar to the normative housing need defined in the literature: independent community living. However, there appear to be substantive infrastructural ) and procedural (lack of advocacy housing placement) gaps between the housing need as defined and the current housing stock. / Thesis / Master of Arts (MA)

Alness, Beata, Leo Rådström, Klara January 2021 (has links)
Background: Mental disorders area major public health problem in Sweden and around the world. Despite this mental disordersremains associated with stigma and marginalization. Individuals suffering from mental illness find themselves in a vulnerable situation and in addition to this they are to a larger extent subject to somatic diseases thaninthe rest of the population. More knowledge is needed around the psychiatric patients experiences of care. Aim: The aim was to describe the psychiatric patients experiencesof interaction with the nursein an inpatient setting. Method: The method used was a general literature review consisting of 10 scientific qualitative articleson which a thematic analysis was conducted. Result: Two main themes were identified: See me as a human and communication. Results show that the psychiatric patient in an inpatient setting requests more interaction and communication with the nurse. The patients often experience feelings of exclusion from their own care. The small gestures of kindness and care that are described to a large extent contribute to feelings of wellbeing. Conclusion: The psychiatric patient could be considered the most vulnerable and exposed. In caring for these patients the importance of empathy, warmth, respect and a genuine interest is essential. In the study presented the patients requested interaction with the nurse consisting of every day small talk. However the conversations primarily seemed to be comprised of the filling out of questionnaires and evaluating conversations. Proposals for further research: During the work process the authors learnt that evidence does exist on the subject matter. However questions were raised whether this knowledge is incorporated in clinical practice especially considering the amount of patients in the studies that testified on the same deficiencies within the care provided and despite the research being conducted for a relatively long period of time.

By means of interviews articulated around different intermediary resources transitional use, constituents of a psychiatric institution team were interviewed individual and collectively with the intention of allowing the subjective expression of a transindividual character. The reports of the clinical occurrences were observed considering the psychoanalysis method, allowing comprehensive production of three fields of emotional-affective meaning: Psychotic Sufferers , Insincere Addicted , and Victims of Contemporaneous Society . The two first fields are related to substructures of one single imaginary, fundamentally committed with the job of discriminating, in order to get control, the true diseased part from the individual with character problems, the involuntary symptom of that which would be a personal decision consequence of acting in a condemnable moral manner. The third field points to a different perception, which understands psychic suffering as a concrete social conditions straight result. The general situation rouses reflections about the existing linking between imaginary fields created/ found here and Psychopathology, Psychiatry and Psychoanalysis important issues.

It changes the routine, habits and customs of the family, especially for the one person who takes the role of the caregiver. Hence this study aims to describe the socio-cultural data of the care takers of psychiatric patients, as well as investigate the psychological dynamic, adaptive efficiency, quality of the sectors of human adaptation and perception of caregivers in relation to routine care. Method: This is a qualitative, exploratory and descriptive study, which investigates 25 participants, who are caregivers of psychiatric patients. The instruments used are the Adaptive Operational Diagnostic Self-Report Scale (EDAO-AR) and the Interview Script. The results showed that the caregiver's profile has as main characteristic the degree of kinship with the patient, mothers or spouses are predominant, primarily because they are women. Regarding the adaptive efficiency, it was identified that all caregivers have "Adaption Ineffectiveness" ranging from mild, moderate and severe. The caregiver's perceptions of difficulties and needs were identified as related to physical, mental and social overload and a range of feelings and expectations aroused in the relationship of care. Finally, it was found that the act of being a psychiatric patient, family caregiver brings on many changes in their life and at such context, it is understood that it is extremely important to identify the needs of caregivers to ease the burdens that affect and denouncing ineffective adaptation.

Lived experiences of general nurses working in Standerton Hospital medical wards designated to be a 72-hour assessment for psychiatric patients

Gule, Nozipho Felicity 11 1900 (has links)
The purpose of the study was to explore and describe the lived experiences of general nurses working at Standerton hospital medical wards which also admit psychiatric patients. A qualitative, descriptive phenomenological approach was used for the study. The study population consisted of seven general nurses working in medical wards at Standerton hospital. Purposive sampling was used to select participants who met the inclusion criteria. Researcher used in-depth face to face interviews to collect data until data saturation was achieved. Tesch’s method of qualitative data analysis was utilised to identify themes. Three themes and five sub-themes emerged from the study: theme1: perceived danger due to aggression sub-themes stress for medical patients, stress for medical patients’ families and stress for nurses. Theme 2: lack of skills in dealing with psychiatric patients’ sub- theme use of restrains. Theme 3: self fulfilling prophecy subtheme reported incidences. The study findings demonstrate the plight of general nurses who are not trained to work with psychiatric patients but continue to do so. Findings further accentuate what is already known about the labelling that goes with psychiatric patients and aggression as a resultant effect. Recommendations were made for future research, policy makers, nursing education and practice. / M.A. (Health Studies)
