A psycho – analysis of bereavement in Xhosa, Zulu and Tswana cultures

Yawa, Sibongile Ndileka 11 1900 (has links)
This study investigated the process of bereavement in the Xhosa, Zulu and Tswana cultures with participants including three cultural experts and a bereaved family from each ethnic group. Data was collected using semi – structured interviews mainly in the participants’ homes. Analysis was used by comparing and contrasting the information gathered. Empirical research findings revealed that the process in the African culture specifically in these three ethnic groups is different from the western culture as stated in the literature. The literature review findings show that the western culture’s processes of bereavement seem focused in the intrapersonal processes. However, the African Black cultures seem to be focused more on interpersonal processes of bereavement. Recommendations are made in the study on how a western trained Educational Psychologist can approach a bereaved client coming from these ethnic groups. Recommendations are also made for Educators and Parents. / Educational Studies / M. Ed. (Guidance and Counselling)

A psycho-educational programme using audio-visual media for the prevention of adolescent substance abuse

Calder, Bruce Donovan 08 1900 (has links)
South Africa has been witnessing an escalation in drug use amongst adolescents in high school. Thus, the main question that motivated this research was: How can a psycho-educational programme, using a selected audio-visual media resource, assist teachers and parents in an effort to prevent adolescent students’ substance abuse problem behaviour? Social cognitive theory (SCT) and self-efficacy theory (SET) were used as a conceptual framework. The study explained these theories in-depth. Adolescent substance abuse was also studied as well as programmes to address this problem. This was followed by a perusal of numerous audio-visual resources for their possible incorporation into prevention programmes. The ‘Above The Influence’ (ATI) resource was selected for the psycho-educational programme which was designed for the study. The programme was put into action during seven sessions over a period of about two months, and implemented with a group of 26 Grade 10 and Grade 11 students in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa, to evaluate its relevance for adolescent substance abuse prevention. To evaluate the programme, a qualitative approach was used. The data were gathered during the programme implementation by means of in-person and online focus groups, individual interviews, written open-ended questions, observation notes and follow-up interviews some time after the programme had ended. Eleven principles were identified from the literature to evaluate the potential of the programme to be effective in preventing adolescent substance abuse. In particular the programme needed to increase adolescents’ skills related to studying, communication, peer relationships, self-efficacy, assertiveness, and drug resistance. The programme also had to employ interactive techniques and needed to address the type of drug abuse problem in the local community, for example, the ‘gateway’ substances of marijuana, alcohol and tobacco. In addition, the programme potential was evaluated in the light of SCT and SET. The findings indicated that the psycho-educational programme, using ATI as audiovisual medium, can be used very effectively by teachers to raise students’ awareness and develop particular skills that could contribute towards the prevention of adolescent substance abuse. It is recommended that the programme should be used in the long-term with repeated reinforcing sessions over time. / Psychology of Education / D. Ed. (Psychology of Education)

The psycho-educational impact of bullying on primary school learners

Govender, Meenaloshini 04 1900 (has links)
School bullying is becoming a problem throughout the world. It is deemed necessary that schools become safer environments for teaching and learning to take place. This study focused specifically on the impact of bullying, educationally and psychologically, on primary school learners. In the literature review conducted, research studies showed that learners were clearly affected by bullying. An empirical investigation, which included four individual sessions and a focus group session, was undertaken to determine what the effects of bullying were on the victims. Transcriptions were made of all the interviews and the data was then analysed to determine what the main themes were. The investigation concluded that bullying does affect learners educationally and psychologically. Based on the results, guidelines were provided for schools, parents, educators and the Department of Education. / Psychology of Education / M. Ed. (Guidance and Counselling)

No. of bitstreams: 1 Mariam Deborah Santos Vezneyan.pdf: 4232459 bytes, checksum: 358aa1a3e4a2a3ff34346490ff62dd4d (MD5) Previous issue date: 2011-11-18 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / This work s objective has been to understand Reflexive Meetings, carried out with women-mothers as an experiment in psycho-educational care, in a dialogical education perspective. A qualitative study of interventional character was carried out as part of a comprehensive research project the Articulation and Dialogue Project with the aim of following the construction process of projects articulated among different educational contexts, within a community located in the outskirts of the city of São Paulo. The research situation is constituted by the observation and participation in 3 Reflexive Meetings, which were recorded, transcribed, read, and re-writen, thus originating 3 reference texts, designated as meeting descriptions. Subsequently, the units of meaning of all descriptions were sought out and grouped into constellations , and analyzed according to Paulo Freire s theoretical framework. The analysis revealed that the world experienced during childhood by those women-mothers (most of which were born in the Brazilian Northeast), was characterized by survival challenges and by the authoritarian educational practices that were utilized by their families of origin. The world experienced at present by the women-mothers also places before them great challenges, chiefly due to the lack of financial resources and the situation of vulnerability in which their children find themselves: drugs, sexuality, early pregnancy, pedophilia, as well as the influence of the media and virtual world technologies. The women-mothers endeavor to use educational practices that are different from those with which they were raised, and they triy to protect their children by means of affectivity and dialogue, although they encounter some difficulties to talk/act, especially when the issues involve the theme of sexuality. The analyzed Reflexive Encounters can be understood, then, as an endeavor in psycho-educational care, in as much as the discussions, experience sharing and reflections that the women-mothers carried out regarding the challenges inherent to the responsibility of educating their children comprised an experience of dialogue and pointed to educational practices in a dialogical perspective / O objetivo deste trabalho foi compreender os Encontros Reflexivos, desenvolvidos junto a mulheres-mães, enquanto proposta de atenção psicoeducativa, numa perspectiva de educação dialógica.

The psychological effects of art therapy on children who have experienced traumatic grief

Carew, Sandra Ann 30 November 2004 (has links)
This thesis investigates the literature on trauma and grief in order to explore the existence of the phenomenon of traumatic grief in children. Appropriate therapies are explored for treating traumatic grief in children. The focus in this research is on non-directive art therapy as the literature has found it to be useful in traumatic circumstances. The therapeutic relationship and the focus on containment are valuable in addressing the primary need of the child in therapy especially when traumatic grief is to be addressed. A qualitative case study approach was chosen. Two case studies were selected to investigate the phenomenon of traumatic grief in children. Purposeful sampling was used to select the cases to observe the phenomenon of traumatic grief. The case studies included pre-therapy and post-therapy assessments, which included cognitive, emotional and behavioural assessments. Art therapy was found to address the problems in the two cases. / Educational Studies / M.Ed.

Resilience in adolescents: a psycho-educational perspective

Steyn, Sharon Teresa 30 October 2006 (has links)
The main aim of this study was to attempt to determine which factors that contribute to resilience are absent in adolescents who are considered to be ”at risk”. The research was undertaken with white adolescent learners between Grades 8 and 12, in a former Model-C secondary school. Several definitions of resilience, a historical view of resilience, the characteristics of a resilient adolescent, several definitions of adolescence, the stages and tasks of adolescence and who the adolescent is in psycho-educational terms, were explored. In this qualitative study, the Vulnerability Questionnaire and the Resilience Questionnaire were given to twelve educators who were requested to select the participants for the study. A qualitative assessment, using the Child and Youth Resilience Measure, was used to determine why certain adolescents are more resilient than others. Each participant also completed a collage which was analysed. / Educational Studies / M.Ed. (Specialisation in Guidance and Counselling)

Psycho-educational guidelines for the use of music in a group anger management programme for children in residential care in Gauteng

De Villiers, Belinda 11 1900 (has links)
This study explored the utilisation of a music anger management technique as an effective therapeutic aid in addressing the problems that children in residential care have in managing and expressing their anger. A literature review was conducted which provided evidence that music can be a helpful tool in teaching children appropriate ways to manage their anger. An empirical study was conducted and five participants were chosen through a sampling process. Background information of the five participants was obtained and data analyses were presented from the data gathered in the pre- and post-assessments processes before and after the implementation of the music anger management technique. The data that gave rise to several empirical findings were then reduced. From the empirical study, it can be concluded that the music anger management technique can be used effectively to improve inappropriate anger management. Getting firsthand experience of the implementation of the music anger management technique led me to derive psycho-educational guidelines, which can assist the educational psychologist in using the music anger management technique in addressing unmanaged anger in children in residential care. / Further Teacher Education / M.Ed.
