"The rise of Protestantism in the seventeenth century was responsible for a deep gloom in the scanty literature which was produced for children during that period. Children were given instruction concerning religion and preparedness for death. But then, as now, children appropriated adult books that interested them. It is pleasant to remember that children at this time found enjoyment in three books not intended for them: Robinson Crusoe, Gulliver's Travels, and Pilgrim's Progress. It was into this scene that John Newbery came--he who was destined to be called The Father of Children's Literature. Publisher and writer of about two hundred children's books, he was the first man to realize that children had no stories of their own and to attempt to remedy that deficiency. Newbery brought to children pleasure and happiness in books that had been almost entirely lacking before his time and his contribution marks a milestone in the development of a special literature for children. Transparency in Global Value Chains : A Case Study on How Swedish Firms in Global Value Chains Perceive Their Level of TransparencyÖhrn Lundin, Josefin January 2015 (has links)
This thesis is a qualitative case study on how Swedish companies operating in global valuechains percieve their level of transparency concerning social- and environmental aspects, andhow they manage this work. The thesis contributes to existing literature since it draw attentionto the role of transparency concerning social- and environmental aspects and study howcompanies operating in global value chains actually perceive their level of transparency. Theanalysis and results in this thesis is based on interviews with sustainability experts within fivedifferent Swedish companies operating in global value chains. The companies in this studydiffer in size and belong to different industries. The result shows that companies in this studydo not perceive transparency as an issue in itself; rather the ability to control the chains has animpact on the level of transparency. The level of control seems to depend on resources andstakeholders pressure, and differ depending on industry and size of the company. In thisstudy, the larger companies have more resources to control their chains than the smallercompanies and therefore they have a higher level of transparency.

This paper is written as a contribution towards a sustainable society in the context of bio-basedpackaging. A few decades back, the world was looking for processes that were efficient in termsof output and quality, but now the situation has changed. The world is looking for solutionswhich are not only effective and efficient but also are sustainable and positive for not justeconomics but also for the society. This paper is also an effort to elaborate the potential of biobasedpackaging. However, this thesis covers the aspects presented by different key playersalong the value chain which increases the contribution of this thesis towards the real world.Other motive of this paper is to give attention to the plastic waste accumulation in the seas.This paper will make use of Geels’s Multi Level Perspective theory along with Roger’s adoptiontheory to enlighten the key factors for adoption of bio-based packaging. Geels’s theory willintroduce the concepts of evolution of a niche level product into a main stream market product.The evolution does not only depend upon the attributes of the product, it depends on many macroelements like landscape pressure or sudden change in the outside environment.Different hypothesis or proposals are presented in this paper on the basis of Geels’s MultilevelPerspective (MLP) theory to demonstrate the possible situation for bio-based packaging productto be either accepted or rejected by the key players in the current regime. The most influentialfactors discovered during the research process are price, supplier strength and technologicalfeasibility of bio-based packaging with the status quo.The dilemma for the key players in this economically unstable situation is investment associatedwith the new packaging schemes and the incentives or business logic in bio-based packagingmaterials. Currently, the concentration of key players in this business arena is more on costsaving by making the process more efficient and product differentiation which somehow makesthe road to success for bio-based packaging much narrower.Nevertheless, bio-based packaging has shown great potential in terms of technological feasibilityand improvement in price. If bio-based packaging opt economies of scale, price can effectivelyimprove and make bio-based packaging competent. Bio-based packaging seems the legitimatesolution for the thousands of tons of plastic waste accumulating in the seas of the world which isalready having severe effects on sea life which will indirectly affect human health.A few decades back, the manufacturing practices focused entirely on improving the ways thatcould help in achieving more quantities by optimizing the processing parameters. Today, theworld has changed critical concerns like sustainability in context of environment and society hastriggered the need of manufacturing practices that are not economically beneficial but alsobeneficial in context of environment and society. In the world of plastic, bio-based packagingproducts are considered to solve the issues mentioned above. This paper will highlight anddiscuss critical parameters that bio-based packaging has to counter in order to incorporate itselfinto mainstream market.

The publishing industry currently faces a re-birth due to the rise of Information Technology (IT),which has created new production and distribution channels. Paper is no longer the only form for publishing; tablets, e-reader, smart phones, and Personal Computer (PC) screens are gaining anincreasing market share. The Leaf Project aims to position itself in the publishing industry by creating a new business start-up exploiting this IT revolution. We divide the publishing industry into three different parts: Production is concerned about content creation and acquisition. Distribution concerns delivering the content to consumers. Access and presentation is about how the content is presented to consumers and how they can access this content. In The Leaf Project we are developing a new way to distribute publications, along with creating an end user interface to browse and access this content. The project is divided into four different masters theses. One is concerned with creating the distribution network, and another is concerned with creating the end user interface. This thesis provides a market analysis and proposes a business model. The fourth thesis will consolidate the complete project by developing a business plan. When looking into the three different parts of the publishing industry, this commercialization plan first benchmarks the proposed end user application and the distribution network by comparing them with currently marketed products. Following this the thesis will examine what is the best content that could be distributed through our network. The final part of this thesis will recommend a business model based on the outcomes of the first two parts of this thesis. This thesis project should be useful for the fourth thesis project that must create an appropriate business plan and this thesis should also help the technical developer by providing market analysis that can be used to guide technical decisions. / Förlagsbranschen står för närvarande inför en pånyttfödelse på grund av uppkomsten av informationsteknik (IT), vilket har skapat nya produktions- och distributionskanaler. Papper är inte längre den enda publiceringsformen; tablets, e-läsare, smartphones, och PC-skärmar har börjat få en allt större marknadsandel. Leaf Projektet syftar till att positionera sig i förlagsbranschen genom att skapa ett startup-företag som utnyttjar IT-revolutionen. Vi delar in förlagsbranschen i tre olika delar: Produktion handlar om att skapa och förvärva innehåll. Distribution handlar om att leverera innehåll till konsumenter Tillgång och presentation handlar om hur innehållet presenteras för konsumenterna och hurde kan komma åt innehållet. I Leaf Projektet utvecklar vi ett nytt sätt att distribuera publikationer, samtidigt som vi skapar ett gränssnitt för slutanvändaren att bläddra i och komma åt innehållet. Projektet är indelat i fyra olika magistersavhandlingar. En handlar om att skapa distributionsnät, och en annan handlar om att skapa gränssnittet för slutanvändaren. Denna avhandling ger en marknadsanalys och föreslår en affärsmodell. Den fjärde avhandlingen kommer att sammanfatta hela projektet genom att presentera enaffärsplan. Vår affärsmodell presenterar den tilltänkta gränssnittet för slutanvändaren samt distributionsnätverket genom att jämföra dem med produkter som redan finns på marknaden. Efter detta, kommer avhandlingen att undersöka vilket innehåll skulle bäst kunna distribueras genom vårt nätverk. Den sista delen av denna uppsats kommer att lägga fram en affärsmodell baserad på resultaten av de två första delarna av denna avhandling. Denna avhandling borde bli användbar för den fjärde avhandlingen som måste skapa en rimlig affärsplan och avhandlingen borde också hjälpa den tekniska utvecklaren genom att visa en marknadsanalys som kan användas för att styra tekniska beslut.

Cette thèse propose de comprendre ces processus à travers le concept de fabrique. Une fabrique est l’imbrication de différentes dimensions techniques, telles que le travail sur le texte ou la construction de procédés de fabrication et de production de formes, d’objets et d’artefacts que sont les livres. Le phénomène de fabrique d’édition est ainsi un acte éditorial qui comprend autant la formalisation d’un contenu que la constitution des outils permettant ce travail. Ce concept de fabrique est développé tout au long de cette recherche en établissant des analyses théoriques des différents objets de l’édition, en réalisant des études de dispositifs techniques, et en menant des expérimentations éditoriales. Nous interrogeons les fabriques d’édition dans le domaine des lettres, et plus particulièrement des modèles alternatifs, en considérant que la pensée émerge des processus dispositifs. La place hégémonique de plusieurs logiciels, depuis l’avènement de l’informatique dans l’édition, limite tout questionnement sur la technique. C’est pourtant en étudiant des pratiques originales et marginales que nous pouvons décrire de nouvelles modélisations créatrices de sens. Notre corpus est composé d’objets éditoriaux, de structures d’édition et de dispositifs techniques qui questionnent les modèles établis et qui construisent de nouveaux modèles épistémologiques en interrogeant notre rapport à la technique. Le parcours général de cette thèse est progressif, expérimental et performatif. Il s’agit de définir le livre comme artefact et d’étudier l’édition comme acte et comme éditorialisation. Nous abordons le numérique comme environnement puis comme processus technique, en analysant l’édition numérique au prisme des humanités numériques. Nous établissons que les formats sont des dispositifs de modélisation du sens, et nous effectuons une critique du logiciel pour conceptualiser la fabrique et pour observer le phénomène de fabrique d’édition. La mise en place des éléments techniques nécessaires à une chaîne ou à une fabrique d’édition fait partie intégrante de l’acte éditorial et de la production du sens. / Publishing processes are part and parcel of the production of meaning, and reflect plural worldviews. This thesis proposes to understand these processes through the concept of factory (fabrique in french). A factory is the interweaving of different technical dimensions, such as work on the text or the construction of manufacturing and production processes for the forms, objects and artifacts that are books. The phenomenon of publishing factories is thus an editorial act that includes both the formalization of content and the creation of the tools that enable this work. This concept of fabrique is developed throughout this research by establishing theoretical analyses of the various objects of publishing, carrying out studies of technical devices, and conducting editorial experiments. We examine publishing factories in the field of literature, and in particular alternative models, considering that thought emerges from processes and devices. The hegemonic role of software in publishing since the advent of computer technology limits any questioning of technique. Yet it is by studying original, marginal practices that we can describe new, meaning-creating models. The general path of this thesis is progressive, experimental and performative. The aim is to define the book as an artifact, and to study publishing as an act and as editorialization. We approach the digital as an environment, then as a technical process, analyzing digital publishing through the prism of digital humanities. We establish that formats are systems for modeling meaning, and we undertake a critique of software to conceptualize the factory and to observe the phenomenon of the publishing factory. Setting up the technical elements required for a publishing chain or factory is an integral part of the editorial act and the production of meaning.
