Modern arc welding machines utilize controllable high frequency DC/DC power supply with high dynamic and steady state current regulation performance. In the design robustness, small size and low weight, low complexity, and high efficiency are the defining criteria. The most suitable approach for a 5 kW arc welding machine power supply application is the high frequency Full-Bridge Phase-Shifted Zero Voltage Switching (FB-PS-ZVS) DC/DC converter with an isolation transformer. This converter not only gives the advantage of zero voltage switching for a wide load current range, it also provides reduced Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) and reduced component stress compared to standard PWM converters. In this thesis a FB-PS-ZVS DC/DC converter with 5 kW power rating is designed for modern arc welding machine applications. IGBTs are utilized at 50 kHz switching frequency for high efficiency and control bandwidth. The output current of the DC/DC converter is controlled via a Digital Signal Processor (DSP) control platform. The performance of the designed DC/DC converter is evaluated via the computer simulations and the experimental study of the constructed prototype.

Design Of A Zvs Qrc Converter For Educational Test Bench

In this thesis, the conventional pulse-width modulated (PWM) and zero-voltage switching (ZVS) quasi-resonant buck converters are analyzed and a variable-frequency control technique is proposed to regulate the output voltage due to the immediate input line and load changes. The quasi-resonant technique provides favorable switching conditions for active switch to reduce switching losses and electromagnetic interference (EMI). The method is based on shaping the voltage across the active switch in quasisinusoidal fashion and the switching action occurs with nearly zero voltage across the active switch. This requires only two additional components to the conventional PWM buck converter. The proposed quasi-resonant converter is capable of operating in megahertz range with a significant improvement in performance and power density. Detailed analytic and small-signal models of the ZVS quasi-resonant buck converter are established and the switching behavior is investigated in order to provide nearly zerovoltage turn-on. The performance of the ZVS quasi-resonant technique is verified with the computer simulations. The results are compared with the experiments in the laboratory involving both the open-loop and closed-loop operations. The detailed experiment procedure is added to use this converter for educational purposes.

In this thesis a two-stage AC/DC/DC power converter is designed and implemented. The AC/DC input stage of the converter consists of the two&amp / #8211 / phase interleaved boost topology employing the average current mode control principle. The output stage consists of a zero voltage switching phase shifted full bridge (ZVS&amp / #8211 / PS&amp / #8211 / FB) DC/DC converter. For the input stage, main design goals are obtaining high input power factor, low input current distortion, and well regulated output dc voltage, and obtaining these attributes in a power converter with high power density. For the input stage, the interleaved structure has been chosen in order to obtain reduced line current ripple and EMI, reduced power component stresses, and improved power density. The control of the pre&amp / #8211 / regulator is provided by utilizing a new commercial monolithic integrated circuit, which provides interleaved continuous conduction mode power factor correction (PFC). The output stage is formed by utilizing the available prototype hardware of a ZVS&amp / #8211 / PS&amp / #8211 / FB DC/DC converter and mainly the system integration and controller design and implementation studies have been conducted. The converter small signal model is derived and utilizing its transfer function and employing voltage loop control, the output voltage regulator has been designed. The output voltage controller is implemented utilizing a digital signal processor (DSP). Integrating the AC/DC preregulator and DC/DC converter, a laboratory AC/DC/DC converter system with high overall performance has been obtained. The overall system performance has been verified via computer simulations and experimental results obtained from laboratory prototype.

MEASUREMENTS OF RELEVANT PARAMETERS IN THE FORMATION OF CLATHRATE HYDRATES BY A NOVEL EXPERIMENTAL APPARATUS

Studying clathrate hydrates is, ideally, a simple task: one just have to keep water under a gas pressure. However, when trying to collect measurements in an accurate and repeatable way, things mess up. When, in particular, kinetic characterizations are required, not only pressure and temperature have to be measured: also particular parameters such as gas evolved/trapped during time, heat released/adsorbed during time, critical phenomena related to additive addition, etc, should be collected in a finer way. In the last years a growing interest has been devoted to investigations on the effects of a wide range of compounds capable to affect the thermodynamics and, in particular, kinetics of clathrate hydrate formation. The study of the effects of these compounds, called conditioners, requires an improvement of the performances of usual lab facilities by introducing a new strategy for the measurement of further characterizing parameters. Presently no standardization of the apparatus designed for clathrate hydrate studies exists, nor any commercial instrumentations are available. Generally, apparatus used are custom-made by the same research team according with the peculiar research requirements To do this we have designed, built, calibrated and tested a novel apparatus that, in addition to the ability of measuring usually unexplored parameters, is based on the idea of obtaining as many parameters as possible in a single formation batch. This in order to solve the problem of collecting a dataset that can be processed homogeneously, thus minimizing errors due stochastic behaviours. Using such an apparatus, several kinds of measurement are presented here, which are related directly to the clathrate hydrate investigation fields, but also more generally related to the study of equilibrium phases involving gaseous components.

Actuator control using pre-calibrated force data on a quadrocopter

In flying robots, stability control is often very sensitive to the actuator performances, and the software module performing the controller, is usually subjected to a long and difficult tuning phase strongly dependent on the specific actuator used. The actuators are often electric motors equipped with propellers. The motor and propeller combination performs differently for every choice of components adopted, even if they are provided by the same vendor with the same part family. The project aims to develop an intelligent actuator module for flying robots composed by a BLDC motor and a propeller, which is invariant to the specific motor and propeller adopted. By gathering the force data of the four used on a quadrocopter, the force and control signal relation could be defined and stored into the program memory of the control board. A battery monitor and a Force-PWM controller was implemented such that it takes force as input and outputs the desired PWM-signal. Tests were made on a prototype of Iqarus quadrocopter and by mounting it with ropes to the floor, it was tested on the lift-off phase. The experiment showed theoretical and practical results, which concludes that the quadrocopter maintained the ability to lift right upwards without any remaining control, assuming proper weight balance of the quadrocopter. / Inom flygande robotar, är stabilitet kontrollen oerhört känsligt till styrdonets prestation, och mjukvaru modulen som utför kontrollen, är ofta förknippad med en lång och problematisk justerings fas starkt beroende av de enskilda styrdonen. Styrdonen är ofta elektriska motorer med propeller. Motor och propeller kombinationen uppträder olika för varje val av komponent, även om komponenterna är försedda från samma återförsäljare och modell. Syftet med detta projekt är att utveckla en intelligent styrdons modul för flygande robotar, omfattad av en BLDC motor och propeller, som blir oberoende av den särskilda motor och propeller kombination som används. Genom att samla kraft data för de fyra styrdonen som används på en quadrocopter, kunde relationen mellan kraft och kontroll signal bli definierad och lagrad i program minnet för kontrol kortet. En batteri monitor och en Kraft-PWM kontroller implementerades, vilket tar kraft data som ingång och skickar ut motsvarande PWM-signal som utgång. Tester var gjorda med en prototyp av Iqarus quadrocopter och genom att binda fast den med rep till golvet, testades den för upplyfts fasen. Assessment and Development of Advanced Power Saving and Supply Concepts For Small Automotive Electronics

With rising fuel prices, increasing electrification, and imminent fines on CO2 emission within the EU, the requirement for energy and cost efficient supply concepts is becomingmore and more important in the automotive industry. This thesis presents an assessmentof, and improvement for energy and cost efficient power supply concepts for low-end automotiveand light e-mobility electronic control units, containing small µCs, and analogand logic components. Specifically, linear regulators, synchronous and non-synchronous buck converters, andswitched capacitor converters are investigated and assessed theoretically. The mostpromising concept, namely a discrete buck converter, is further studied using theoreticalassessment, experiment, and simulations. The key result of this work is a concept for replacing commonly used linear regulatorsin small electronic control units (ECUs) by a more efficient supply with only a smallcost adder. Specifically, since no low-end switched converter ICs are available today, wedeveloped a buck converter with discrete control circuit. This concept provides a cheap,yet efficient alternative to linear regulators for a wide range of applications. In addition,the application of this concept is supported by component selection criteria, and also bythe developed simulation models.

Τα τελευταία χρόνια έχει αρχίσει να διαδίδεται με γρήγορους ρυθμούς η μέθοδος μεταφοράς ισχύος μέσω συνεχούς ρεύματος. Προς αυτή την κατεύθυνση ώθηση έδωσε η ανάπτυξη νέων ημιαγωγικών διακοπτικών στοιχείων οδηγώντας σε περεταίρω ανάπτυξη και χρήση των συστημάτων μεταφοράς με συνεχές ρεύμα. Σε αυτή τη διπλωματική εργασία μελετάται ένα σύστημα μεταφοράς ισχύος με διασύνδεση συνεχούς ρεύματος (HVDC), που συνδέεται ανάμεσα σε δυο εναλλασσόμενα ηλεκτρικά δίκτυα με και χωρίς φορτίο. Την διασύνδεση συνεχούς ρέματος πραγματοποιούν δυο back-to-back AC/DC μετατροπείς VSC, που αναλαμβάνουν τους ρόλους του ανορθωτή και του αντίστροφα ισχύος. Οι μετατροπείς χρησιμοποιούν την διαμόρφωση πλάτους παλμού PWM. Αρχικά μελετάται θεωρητικά το μοντέλο των μετατροπέων και του back-to-back HVDC συστήματος και στην συνέχεια σχεδιάζεται και αναλύεται η λειτουργία του ανάμεσα σε δυο δίκτυα εναλλασσομένου ρεύματος με ή χωρίς την ταυτόχρονη παρουσία φορτίου. Τέλος προσομοιώνεται το σύστημα μέσω του λογισμικού Matlab και συγκεκριμένα της εφαρμογής Simulink για την εξαγωγή συμπερασμάτων. / In the past few years the method of power transmission by means of direct current has expanded rapidly. To this direction a push forward has been given by the development of new semi-conductive switching valves leading to a further development of transmission systems by direct current. In this thesis what is considered is a power transmission system via direct current HVDC connected between two AC electric networks with or without load. The direct current connection is achieved through back-to-back AC/DC converters VSC which undertake the role of rectifier and that of inverter of power. The converters use the Pulse Width Modulation (PWM). At first the converter model and the back-to-back HVDC system is theoretically approached and in the process what is designed and analyzed is its function between two networks of AC current with or without the simultaneous presence of load. Finally the system is simulated through software Matlab and specifically the application of simulink in order to draw conclusions.

Control, Design, and Implementation of Quasi Z-source Cascaded H-Bridge Inverter

This report is about control, design and implementation of a low voltage-fed quasi Z-source three-level inverter. The topology has been interesting for photovoltaic-systems due to its ability to boost the incoming voltage without needing an extra switching control. The topology was first simulated in Simulink and later implemented on a full-bridge module to measure the harmonic distortion and estimating the power losses of the inverter. An appropriate control scheme was used to set up a shootthrough and design a three-level inverter. The conclusion for the report is that the quasi Z-source inverter could boost the DC-link voltage in the simulation. But there should be more consideration to the internal resistance of the components for the implementation stage as it gave out a lower output voltage than expected.
