Developing Place Attachment to the Natural Surroundings of the School: The Role of Outdoor EducationKatsamagka, Argyro January 2013 (has links)
Place is highly connected with outdoor education; it is defined by the location of the learning process and it designates both practically and theoretically ways to foster to students a strong bond with natural places. Place attachment refers to this bond or, in other words, the love relationship, one can develop with a place. This research tries to investigate if there is a causal relationship between outdoor education and development of place attachment. A quasi-experimental design research was conducted to 31 teenagers, 12-13 years old. A questionnaire, for measuring the level of place attachment to the natural surroundings of their school, was distributed at two different timelines. Four different dimensions of place attachment were measured; place identity, place dependence, social bonding and nature bonding. The experimental group participated in the program “Attachment to my Local Natural Landscape”, which was developed especially for this study and promoted direct connection with the land, through outdoor activities. The control group received no intervention. The results demonstrated that the program influenced only the female participants of the experimental group. No significant differences were indicated between the two groups after the implementation of the program. The small sample and the short length program implemented were important limitations of this study, which demand further future research to extract more clear results.

O ensino contábil para empreendimentos econômicos solidários: um estudo na Incubadora Social da Universidade Federal de Goiás / The accounting education for solidarity economic enterprises: a study in social incubator of the Federal University of GoiásNascimento, Letícia Maria Faleiro 08 April 2016 (has links)
The research permeates the existing accounting and self-management in solidarity economic enterprises in the management model is democratic and participatory and requires accounting tools compatible with its features. The Effects of Online Homework on Achievement and Self-efficacy of College Algebra StudentsBrewer, David Shane 01 May 2009 (has links)
This study compared the effectiveness, in terms of mathematical achievement and mathematics self-efficacy, of online homework to textbook homework over an entire semester for 145 students enrolled in multiple sections of college algebra at a large community college. A quasi-experimental, posttest design was used to analyze the effect on mathematical achievement, as measured by a final exam. A pretest-posttest design was used to analyze the effect on mathematics self-efficacy, as measured by the Mathematics Self-efficacy Scale. The control group completed their homework using the textbook and the treatment group completed similar homework using an online homework system developed by the textbook publisher. All class sections followed a common syllabus, schedule, and homework list and completed a common, departmental final exam. Classroom observations were also used as a way to establish the similarity between groups.
The results of the study found that while the treatment group generally scored higher on the final exam, no significant difference existed between the mathematical achievement of the control and treatment groups. Both the control and treatment group did experience significant improvements in their mathematics self-efficacy, but neither group demonstrated more improvement than the other. When students were divided based on incoming math skill level, analysis showed that low-skilled students who used online homework exhibited significantly higher mathematical achievement than low-skilled students who used textbook homework. Exploratory analysis also showed that more students with low incoming skill levels and more repeating students received a passing grade when using online homework than did their higher-skilled, first-time counterparts, although the differences were not significant.
Based on this study it appears as if online homework is just as effective as textbook homework in helping students learn college algebra and in improving students' mathematics self-efficacy. Online homework may be even more effective for helping the large population of college algebra students who enroll in the course with inadequate prerequisite math skills. Instructors and researchers should consider the possibility that online homework can successfully help certain populations of students develop understanding better than traditional approaches. This study has implications for mathematics instructors and for online homework system developers.

Implementing the Difference in Differences (Dd) Estimator in Observational Education Studies: Evaluating the Effects of Small, Guided Reading Instruction for English Language LearnersSebastian, Princy 07 1900 (has links)
The present study provides an example of implementing the difference in differences (DD) estimator for a two-group, pretest-posttest design with K-12 educational intervention data. The goal is to explore the basis for causal inference via Rubin's potential outcomes framework. The DD method is introduced to educational researchers, as it is seldom implemented in educational research. DD analytic methods' mathematical formulae and assumptions are explored to understand the opportunity and the challenges of using the DD estimator for causal inference in educational research. For this example, the teacher intervention effect is estimated with multi-cohort student outcome data. First, the DD method is used to detect the average treatment effect (ATE) with linear regression as a baseline model. Second, the analysis is repeated using linear regression with cluster robust standard errors. Finally, a linear mixed effects analysis is provided with a random intercept model. Resulting standard errors, parameter estimates, and inferential statistics are compared among these three analyses to explore the best holistic analytic method for this context.

Nadir, Jakob January 2023 (has links)
As frequently as it occurs before elections that politicians give a united image of their potential coalition, previous studies have manly focused on explaining why coalitions of parties come to existence in the first place. However, previous scholars have not studied whether the demonstration of unity within a political bloc before an election affects the voters. The purpose of this study is to examine this aspect of politics through the following hypotheses: H0: The demonstration of unity within a bloc before an election has no influence on how voters vote. H1: The demonstration of unity within a bloc before an election increases voters' willingness to vote for the most united bloc. The hypotheses were examined through quasi-experimental design and the study was conducted on university students. The result indicates that the demonstration of unity in a political bloc before an election has no significant effect on voting behavior, thus confirming the H0. However, further studies are suggested before confirming the result.

Evaluation of the implementation of a preferred music intervention for reducing agitation and anxiety in institutionalised elders with dementiaSung, Huei-Chuan (Christina) January 2006 (has links)
There is some evidence about the efficacy of preferred music on agitation in elders with dementia; however, little is known about its effectiveness on agitation when implemented by nursing staff in long-term care facilities. Even less is known about use of preferred music for managing anxiety in those with dementia. This quasi-experimental study aimed to evaluate the implementation of a preferred music intervention delivered by nursing staff on agitation and anxiety of institutionalised elders with dementia. The sample comprised of 57 elders with dementia residing in two building complexes which provided similar care routines and staffing in a large Taiwanese residential care facility. These two building complexes were randomly assigned as the experimental and control group. Nursing staff in the experimental group received a facilitation program to prepare them for implementing the preferred music intervention; whereas nursing staff in the control group received no facilitation program. The music intervention based on each resident's music preferences was then provided by the trained nursing staff for 32 experimental residents twice a week for six weeks. Meanwhile, 25 residents in the control group only received the usual standard care without music. All residents were assessed by Cohen-Mansfield Agitation Inventory (CMAI) for overall and three subtypes of agitated behaviours and by Rating of Anxiety in Dementia for anxiety at baseline and week 6. Additionally, the modified CMAI measured the 30-minute occurrence of agitation at baseline, session 4, and session 12. The results indicate that institutionalised elders with dementia who received six weeks of preferred music intervention implemented by trained nursing staff had significant reductions on overall, three subtypes of agitated behaviours, anxiety, and 30-minute occurrence of agitation over time compared to those who received the usual standard care without music. Preferred music shows promise as a strategy for reducing agitation and anxiety in those with dementia when implemented by trained nursing staff. Such intervention can be incorporated into routine activities to improve the quality of care provided by nursing staff and the quality of life of those with dementia in long-term care settings. Our study results provide clinically relevant evidence which contribute to closing the gap between research and practice.

Orientation and Mobility Programs aim to promote the development of the skills to orient themselves and to move, with greater efficiency and safety, in different environments, through the training of specific techniques of locomotion and the use of the remaining senses. Although it is a fundamental training for blind person, systematized national materials that discuss their planning and evaluation are scarce, especially when dealing with school environments. In this sense, the present research was elaborated with the intention to assist professional of the area. The aim of this study was to evaluate the training of Orientation and Mobility techniques, in school environments, using as a methodological procedure for data collection in pre and post test designs into Categories Self-help and Cane and AB single subject for Category Sighted Guide. A blind student and a teacher participated in this study. The results showed that, after approximately two months of training, the student and the teacher were able to improve their performances by performing the basic locomotion techniques. It is concluded that the use of these designs was a successful choice for the evaluation of the training, since, in addition to demonstrating the change in the student's level of performance before and after training in Categories Self-help and Cane, it was possible to identify the nuances of both during the training process of Category Sighted Guide. The research concluded that the determinant point for the success of the training was the adequate selection of the strategies, and the mains were: 1) the verbal instruction; 2) prompting; 3) the provision of execution models; and, 4) physical experimentation. / CNPq: 132912/2016-3

Hope or despair? : A quantitative survey on social media about people's attitude towards communication regarding climate change.Åslund, Petra, Dahlgren, Magdalena January 2019 (has links)
Climate change is a constantly debated issue in our society today, and most people seem to have a sense of awareness that we need to act urgently and make major changes in our lifestyle in order to decrease our impact on the climate. Despite the fact that climate change leaves few untouched and many individuals also claim to be both well informed and engaged in the climate issue, the commitment is not always put into action. This environmental sociological quantitative study intends to investigate whether different types of climate messages have an impact on the individual's attitude towards climate change at the time of exposure. The study also examines whether there are differences in the individual's socio-economic background that affect their self-rated climate commitment. In the study 140 respondents with varying background variables participated (age, sex, level of education, place of residence and income). Respondents who were divided into two experimental groups and one control group were asked to answer a digital survey with a quasi-experimental design. The result showed that the different communicative approaches to conveying issues around the climate did not have an impact on the respondents' attitude towards climate change at the time of exposure. There was also no significant difference with respect to the respondents' climate commitment between the background variables residential area and level of education. However, the result showed a significant difference between men and women regarding estimated climate engagement, which is in line with previous research.
