Moreira, César Augusto. January 2009 (has links)
They were measured the physical parameters: electric resistivity, chargeability and natural electric potential, starting from the geophysical methods of Electrical Resistivity, Induced Polarization and Spontaneous Potential, through the techniques of electric profiling and vertical electric sounding. Were also accomplished pH and Eh measures, sieving, granulates analysis and hydraulic permeability field. The Cordeirópolis Solids Waste Landfill was investigated, a disposition area of domiciliary residues in ditches dug in the soil, with opening and closing programmed dates. The data acquisition consisted in annually selection of ditches closed between 12/2001 and 12/2007, accomplishment of the geophysical survey and soil collection for pH and Eh measures. There was an increase of the spontaneous potential of the recent ditches for the old ditches, possibly associated to the geochemical stability growing along the period of degradation of the organic residues. There is a correlation between low resistivity and high chargeability in rich areas in organic matter, while areas with shortage of organic matter are characterized by low chargeability values and of low resistivity. There is also a correlation among anomalies of low spontaneous potential and high chargeability. The relative variation of the parameters for each ditch, associated to residence time of the materials, allowed relating them the phases of degradation of organic matter in landfills. The statistical analysis of the values indicates to be necessary 8 years for return to the natural resistivity values of the rock located to 10m of depth and 12 years... Multi-scale investigation and resistivity-based durability modeling of EShC containing crystalline admixtures

Azarsa, Pejman 01 October 2018 (has links)
It is well-known that concrete permeability is a good indicator of its expected durability until it remains uncracked. However, in various stages of its service life, different types of cracking in concrete can be developed due to exposure to different deterioration processes such as early plastic shrinkage or chloride-induced reinforcement corrosion. Although these cracks may not endanger concrete’s structural performance from the mechanical point of view, they create a pathway for aggressive ions that can initiate degradation processes, lead to increase in concrete permeability and thus reduce its durability. Cracking in concrete might not be preventable, but its capability to naturally seal small cracks, named autogenous self-healing (SH), provides an additional feature to manufacture more durable concrete structures. However, natural self-healing capability of concrete is limited and therefore it is typically omitted in the design of concrete structures. Hence, more attention has been recently paid to Engineered Self-healing Concrete (EShC) which is associated with artificially triggered healing mechanisms into the cementitious matrix by incorporating various substances such as crystalline products. EShC helps in reducing concrete permeability; thus, increasing its service-life and durability. Due to formation of needle-shaped pore-blocking crystals, Crystalline Admixtures (CA), as a candidate from the Permeability-Reducing Admixtures (PRA) category, can be implemented into concrete mixtures to fabricate EShC concretes. Crystalline waterproofing technology is not new, but still is unknown to many researchers, engineers, and construction industry professionals. The lack of knowledge of its microstructure and self-healing properties limits CA’s proper usage in the construction industry. The techniques to assess the self-healing capability of mortar and concrete are not well-standardized yet. No research work has been done to address certain durability characteristics of this material (i.e. electrical resistivity (ER) or chloride diffusivity) especially when combined with Supplementary Cementitious Materials (SCM) and Portland Limestone Cement (PLC). Since the resistance of concrete against ions’ penetration is a function of its permeability, it might be a straightforward and reliable parameter to rapidly evaluate concrete’s durability during its intended service life. Hence, electrical resistivity measurement is considered as an indirect and alternative tool for other time-consuming permeability testing techniques to examine the CA’s efficiency as it modifies the concrete’s microstructure by crystals’ deposition; thus, leads to permeability improvement. In comparison to previous studies, on a larger scale, this thesis aims to systematically study the effects of CA on the microstructural features, self-healing properties and long-term durability and resistivity of cement-based materials and in addition, draw some comprehensive conclusions on the use of CA in new and repair applications. This study is divided into three major phases to propose all-inclusive work on using CA in construction industry. To satisfy the goals of each individual phase, a test matrix consisting of a series of four mixes with variables such as use of PLC or presence of CA in powder form is considered. In order to address to the lack of research and industry knowledge discussed above, this PhD thesis includes the following phases: Phase (I) In this phase, the main focus is on the microstructural properties and the changes in the pore structure and chemical compositions of the cement phase of mortar mixes when treated with CA. These microstructural features are studied using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and Scanning Transmission Electron Holography Microscope (STEHM). Moreover, physical and chemical characteristics of the hydration products are determined using image analysis and Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX) Spectroscopy, respectively. Phase (II) This phase is allocated to macro-level investigation of durability characteristics such as chloride/water permeability and electrical resistivity of concrete structures containing CA and PLC cement. To non-destructively measure the chloride ion concentration in the field conditions, both changes in corrosion potential of rebars and concrete electrical resistivity in treated circular hollow-section steel reinforced columns exposed to simulated marine environment is monitored and compared over a 2-year period with control samples. In addition, laboratory-size concrete samples are studied to investigate the effects of CA presence on long-term resistivity, rapid chloride permeability, water permeability and chloride diffusivity of concrete. Later, a resistivity-based model is developed to predict long-term performance of concretes incorporating slag or metakaolin, studied in various environmental conditions. The long-term goal of this phase is to develop a standard design guideline and durability-based model. Phase (III) Using an innovative self-healing testing method [1], quantitative analysis of crack closure ability and self-healing potential of CA treated and control concretes with OPC or PLC cement is accomplished during this phase. The obtained results from first phase showed that hydrated CA particle revealed fine, compact, homogenous morphology examined by STEHM and its diffraction pattern after water-activation indicated nearly amorphous structure, however, diffuse rings, an evidence for short-range structural order and sub-crystalline region, were observed which requires further investigation. The SEM micrographs taken from specimen’s fractured surface showed formation of pore-blocking crystals for all treated mixes while similar spots in un-treated sections were left uncovered. Although needle-shaped crystals were observed in the treated mortar specimens, but not all of them had shapes and chemical compositions other than ettringite (well-known to form needle-like crystals). Using backscatter SEM images and EDX spectrums, examination of polished mortar sections with and without CA also showed typical hydration phases, forming in the control system. Results from phase II showed that concretes treated with CA had almost 50% lower water penetration depth and thus smaller permeability coefficient when compared with the virgin OPC or PLC concretes. According to salt ponding test results, the use of CA helped in enhancing the resistance to chloride penetration compared to control concrete. This improvement increases with increasing in concrete age. Strong linear relationship between Surface Resistivity (SR) and Bulk Resistivity (BR) data was observed which indicates that these test methods can be used interchangeably. The presence of SCM in concrete indicated considerable increase in both SR and BR compared to control concrete. Concretes incorporating slag or metakaolin have tendency to react more slowly (or rapidly in MK case), consume calcium hydroxide over time, form more Calcium Silicate Hydrate (C-S-H) gel, densify internal matrix, and also reduce OH- in the pores’ solution; thus, increase concrete electrical resistivity. For laboratory specimens, environmental conditions such as temperature variation and degree of water saturation indicated considerable effects on electrical resistivity measurements. As temperature or water content of concrete decreases, its electrical resistivity greatly increases by more than 2-3 times from reference environmental condition. This is mostly because of variation or accessibility in electron mobility. Experimental results from field investigation showed that electrical resistivity readings were highly influenced by the presence of rebar and concrete moisture conditions. In addition, concrete cover thickness and CA addition into cementitious matrix had a negligible effect on its resistivity. In the last phase, an optical microscope was used to measure the average crack width. OPC samples had an average measured crack width of 0.244 mm as compared to 0.245 mm for OPC-CA, 0.251 mm for PLC, and 0.247 mm for PLC-CA. Self-healing test results also showed 90% self-healing ratio for CA modified mix within few days after starting experiment. Addition of CA into the mix led to higher rates of healing and full crack closure (width up to 250 µm) when compared to reference concrete. An empirical equation that relates water initial flow rate to the crack width (Q∝〖CW〗^3) was also proposed in this phase. Presence of PLC and CA in the mixture resulted in positive improvement in crack-closing capability and self-healing ratio. / Graduate / 2019-09-11

Characterization of High-Resistivity Silicon Bulk and Silicon-on-Insulator Wafers

January 2012 (has links)
abstract: High-Resistivity Silicon (HRS) substrates are important for low-loss, high-performance microwave and millimeter wave devices in high-frequency telecommunication systems. The highest resistivity of up to ~10,000 ohm.cm is Float Zone (FZ) grown Si which is produced in small quantities and moderate wafer diameter. The more common Czochralski (CZ) Si can achieve resistivities of around 1000 ohm.cm, but the wafers contain oxygen that can lead to thermal donor formation with donor concentration significantly higher (~1015 cm-3) than the dopant concentration (~1012-1013 cm-3) of such high-resistivity Si leading to resistivity changes and possible type conversion of high-resistivity p-type silicon. In this research capacitance-voltage (C-V) characterization is employed to study the donor formation and type conversion of p-type High-resistivity Silicon-On-Insulator (HRSOI) wafers and the challenges involved in C-V characterization of HRSOI wafers using a Schottky contact are highlighted. The maximum capacitance of bulk or Silicon-On-Insulator (SOI) wafers is governed by the gate/contact area. During C-V characterization of high-resistivity SOI wafers with aluminum contacts directly on the Si film (Schottky contact); it was observed that the maximum capacitance is much higher than that due to the contact area, suggesting bias spreading due to the distributed transmission line of the film resistance and the buried oxide capacitance. In addition, an "S"-shape C-V plot was observed in the accumulation region. The effects of various factors, such as: frequency, contact and substrate sizes, gate oxide, SOI film thickness, film and substrate doping, carrier lifetime, contact work-function, temperature, light, annealing temperature and radiation on the C-V characteristics of HRSOI wafers are studied. HRSOI wafers have the best crosstalk prevention capability compared to other types of wafers, which plays a major role in system-on-chip configuration to prevent coupling between high frequency digital and sensitive analog circuits. Substrate crosstalk in HRSOI and various factors affecting the crosstalk, such as: substrate resistivity, separation between devices, buried oxide (BOX) thickness, radiation, temperature, annealing, light, and device types are discussed. Also various ways to minimize substrate crosstalk are studied and a new characterization method is proposed. Owing to their very low doping concentrations and the presence of oxygen in CZ wafers, HRS wafers pose a challenge in resistivity measurement using conventional techniques such as four-point probe and Hall measurement methods. In this research the challenges in accurate resistivity measurement using four-point probe, Hall method, and C-V profile are highlighted and a novel approach to extract resistivity of HRS wafers based on Impedance Spectroscopy measurements using polymer dielectrics such as Polystyrene and Poly Methyl Methacrylate (PMMA) is proposed. / Dissertation/Thesis / Ph.D. Electrical Engineering 2012

Rodrigo Machado 15 April 2008 (has links)
The electric tomography geophysical technique adapted for aquatic environment, with the modern technology available nowadays, reveals itself sufficiently promising and of great productivity both in the field data collection and in the recognition of aspects of interest of the substratum. It is possible to make the data acquiring in any navigable stretches of rivers, lakes and some seas. In this context, this paper approached the applicability of this technique, with the use of modern equipment and accessories for works in the water. The field procedures, the data processing and integration of the data collection are discussed considering the acquisition of a great amount of data both parallel and orthogonal to the river. The application tests of the technique were conducted in the river San Francisco, in the region of the border of the states of Bahia and Pernambuco, northeast region of Brazil. This area was selected because it has been subject of studies to install a hydroelectric plant (Riacho Seco), owned by the Companhia Hidro Elétrica do São Francisco (CHESF). To perform the field works a boat was used to carry and drag, in the surface of the water, a multi-electrode cable of electric tomography, especially developed for such purposes, as well as all the integrated equipment namely: GPS especially designed for navigation in aquatic environments, adapted fathometer of double frequency in the boat, multichannel eletrorresistivímeter and notebook with specific software that managed all the operations and data. The results had shown that it was possible to map the fisiography of the riverbed as well as identifying and delimiting geophysical anomalies compatible to the probable occurrences of deposits of sediments as well as typical lithologic contacts and structures like weathering and fractures in the underground materials in the bottom of the river.

Piva, Diógenes Honorato January 2014 (has links)
This study investigates the influence of sintering atmosphere on the electrical properties of aluminous porcelains containing different concentrations of Fe2O3, sintered in oxidizing and reducing conditions. The influence of these variables on the microstructure, phase formation and electrical properties were investigated with the aid of techniques such as X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and impedance spectroscopy. The ceramic bodies were made from a formulation obtained from literature, aluminous porcelains considered applicable to High Performance: feldspar 30 wt%, 30 wt% kaolin and 40 wt% alumina. Formulations containing different concentrations of Fe2O3 were divided into two groups. A first burned in the atmospheric air to create the oxidizing condition and a second solution burned gas CO/CO2 to create a reducing condition. For the reducing conditions employed a technique known as "bed graphite." The firing temperatures were 1200, 1250 and 1300 ° C. The analysis of the ceramic bodies after sintering indicated that all samples showed corundum and mullite as major phases and small fractions of quartz. Hematite and metallic iron were observed for samples containing high concentration of Fe2O3. For oxidizing conditions, the addition of Fe2O3 caused a decrease in the resistivity of the samples. The higher electrical resistivity presented by the sample containing 3 wt% Fe2O3 was attributed to the high presence of mullite. The presence of hematite for samples containing up to 3 wt% Fe2O3 was considered responsible for the decrease in electrical resistivity. The addition of Fe2O3 resulted in an improvement in resistivity of the sample sintered in oxidizing atmosphere. This improvement is attributed to the high amount of glassy phase of low conductivity and high number of pores for formulations containing> 3 wt% Fe2O3. The results showed that although the presence of 3 wt% Fe2O3 is seen as the maximum acceptable concentration, higher concentrations of Fe2O3 can be used for the production of electrical porcelain insulators.

Condicionantes geológicos na interpretação de ensaios de piezocone para identificação estratigráfica na investigação geotécnica e geoambiental / Geological conditioning aspects for piezocone test interpretation for stratigraphical identification in geotechnical and geo-environmental site investigation

Giuliano De Mio 16 December 2005 (has links)
In situ tests for geotechnical and geo-environmental site investigation embraces a variety of soundings and tests to map and define stratigraphic logging and specific design parameters for each kind of job. Stratigraphic logging and soil classification are a common stage to all investigation programs and frequently they are performed throughout logging tests which results in local vertical information. The main objective of this research is to evaluate the influence of geological history in the interpretation of piezocone tests for stratigraphic logging. Seismic piezocone tests were carried out to try to identify difference response between lateritic and non lateritic soils. Resistivity piezocone tests were carried out to evaluate salt-water intrusion within a shallow sedimentary aquifer. In this sense, nine sites with different geologic conditions, representing extensive area from Brazil, were selected and investigated. They include quaternary sediment sequences on the brazilian coast, tafrogenic sedimentary sequences and tropical soils originated from weathering of Paraná basin sedimentary and igneous rocks. Piezocone tests were effective for stratigraphic logging, sediment classification as well as to estimate geotechnical design parameters based on correlations for sedimentary sediments. For these type of soils, the international experience developed for sedimentary soils from North America and Europe can be used. Resistivity piezocone tests were effectively useful to identify salt-water intrusion within a sedimentary aquifer and contributed to refine soil stratigraphy. Consistent relations between geologic history and geotechnical properties were established based on piezocone test results. In the other hand, the weathering process produces profile transformations in the tropical soils and imposes limitations to stratigraphy definition, soil classification and to estimate geotechnical soil parameters based on these correlations. For tropical soils, the resistivity piezocone test was not efficient to identify the groundwater level and to refine stratigraphic logging, probably due to the presence of iron oxides and deep groundwater. The seismic piezocone tests were effective to separate lateritic and non-lateritic soils throughout the relation between maximum shear modulus and poit resistance (Go/qc). It is concluded that the geological information is fundamental for the interpretation of piezocone results, especially to integrate several logging test data, to identify spatial distribution and variability of soil layers. In this sense, combined tests, such as the seismic piezocone, where more than one parameter can be measured at the same location, contribute to minimize variability effects in the estimation of geotechnical soil parameters

Estudo do revenimento do aço ferrítico-martensítico Eurofer-97 por meio de medidas magnéticas e elétricas / Estudo do revenimento do aço ferrítico-martensítico eurofer-97 por meio de medidas magnéticas e elétricas

Felipe Uhrigshardt Farrão 08 October 2013 (has links)
Reduced-activation ferritic-martensitic (RAFM) steels are promising candidates as structural materials in future fusion power plants as ITER (International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor) and DEMO (nuclear fusion power plant that is intended to build upon the expected success of the ITER, which is expected becomes operational in 2020). The Eurofer-97 is a RAFM steel developed by the European Union with nominal composition 9Cr -1,1W - 0,125Ta - 0,25V - 0,105C - 0,6Mn - 0,036 N (wt.%). The material for this study was supplied by KIT (Karlsruhe Institut für Technologie - Germany), after hot rolling followed by tempering at 760oC. Next the Eurofer-97 steel was cold rolled (80% reduction) and treated in two different temperatures in the austenitic field (1050º and 1150ºC) by 30 min, followed by air cooling. After quenching the material was tempered for 2 h at several temperatures up to 800ºC. The samples were characterized using scanning electron microscopy, microhardness tests, magnetization and electrical resistivity measurements. Thermodynamical simulations were also performed in order to predict the temperature dependence of the equilibrium phases in the material. For tempering at ?500oC it was observed a slightly increase in the microhardness of the Eurofer-97 steel, followed by pronounced softening for tempering performed at higher temperatures. The same trend was observed for the electrical resistivity. The coercive field also shown a strong decrease for tempering performed at higher temperatures than ?550oC. These results suggested that the beginning of nitrates and carbonates precipitation occurs around 500oC. For tempering performed in mild temperatures the coercive field and electrical resistivity are more sensitive than microhardness measurements to detect the microstructural changes in the investigated material.

Experimental determination of ohmic resistivity of fly ash for design of electrostatic precipitators.

Marcelo Ozawa 10 July 2003 (has links)
This report is a collection of elements to be used in the design of Electrostatic Precipitators, with experimental data of fly ashes from combustion gases of Mineral Coal Fired Boilers. The aims of this research are to construct a standard device to measure the ohmic resistivity of materials, to get data of ohmic resistivity of fly ashes from mineral coals used in Brazil and with this data, to list recommendations about the key points to size electrostatic precipitators (calculation of specific collection area), when this equipment is arranged after one boiler that burns Brazilian mineral coals. The method used was based on the ASME Standard, in which the fly ash (material to be tested) is put between the discharge and the collecting electrodes, a high electrical tension is applied until the electrical break down tension to be reached; at this moment, the resistivity is measured. The construction of this device and the experimental procedure were conducted according to this standard. The tested materials were collected from existing Electrostatic Precipitator of South of Brazil, where the mineral coal is commonly used. The results indicated low values of ohmic resistivity of the Brazilian fly ashes, if compared to results of coals from other countries. Its variation with the temperature has the same behavior of fly ashes from other countries, i.e., the ohmic resistivity increases when the temperature increases. It was also executed tests with particulate materials from electrostatic precipitator of biomass boiler whose ohmic resistivity is lower than the Brazilian mineral coal. The tested material, chemical composition, and collecting process were totally described, available and a full analysis can be executed; these data are inedita in Brazil. These results allow to list the recommendations to design Electrostatic Precipitators for Brazil Mineral Coal Fired Boilers.

The use of resistivity and induced polarization with a 3D acquisition technique for geoenvironmental characterization of an area downstream Baurus solid waste disposal site.

A contaminated site downstream a landfill in Brazil was investigated using a 3D resistivity and induced polarization imaging technique. The data set consisted of a series of parallel electrical profile data acquired with the dipole-dipole array, and was inverted as a 3D survey. . The results suggest the presence of a contamination plume and their preferential path, which is in good agreement with the underground water flow data. Chemical analysis data from the monitoring wells confirm the incipient contamination.
