Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Centro de Ciencias Agrarias / Made available in DSpace on 2012-10-17T01:35:12Z (GMT).

Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Centro de Ciencias Agrarias / Made available in DSpace on 2012-10-17T01:46:12Z (GMT).

The death of virtue: Charlotte Dacre's critique of ideals of the feminineViegas-Monchamp, Tania 20 March 2006 (has links)
At the turn of the nineteenth century in England, the Gothic novel was extremely popular for its stories of ghosts, mysterious circumstances and of course, the “damsel in distress”. These novels depicted such women as virtuous heroines, women whose chastity, perseverance in the face of adversity (often brought about by a threatening male figure) and innocence made them models for female readers. However, such depictions of female virtue encouraged readers to associate positive female behaviour with suffering. Charlotte Dacre choose to challenge these beliefs by writing about heroines who attempted to understand and control their sexuality and their lives, regardless of societal mores. However, while Dacre writes of such women, her heroines always end up punished in some way, condemned to a life apart from the outside world by being shut away in convents, or succumbing to death. Comparing Dacre’s work to novels by Ann Radcliffe and Matthew Lewis reveals her important contribution to English literature from a feminist perspective; however, it is conceded here that Dacre ultimately cannot envision women who can free themselves from accepted beliefs of virtue. Her heroines’ destinies seem the same as those of her contemporaries: to suffer. Still, her courage in writing about such heroines makes her a remarkable writer, and important to a feminist study of Gothic literature. / February 2006

Hur stärks ett företags varumärke genom sponsring? : Rosa Bandet kampanjenAksan, David, Aslan, Mary January 2009 (has links)
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to analyze and investigate how a company’s brand is strengthened by the sponsorship and in which way. We will also make a comparison between a main sponsor and smaller sponsors.Method: We have used a qualitative method, i.e. interviews. We interviewed a sponsor charge by the three sponsors, we have chosen and a representative from the Pink Ribbon Campaign. Results and Conclusion: A company’s brand is strengthened by the sponsorship depending on what conditions the companies have. This means the strength of cooperation between donors and sponsor takers have. The more a sponsor helps the more space it takes, thus strengthening the brand more. The degree of strength depends on how appropriate the brand is in the A-ERIC model.

Analysis of Genetic Diversity and Relationships in the China Rose GroupSoules, Valerie Ann 2009 December 1900 (has links)
The wild origin, early breeding history, and diversity of the China Rose group,
including R. chinensis and its varieties, cultivars, and hybrids, are largely unknown. The
aims of this study were to investigate the genetic diversity and relationships of the China
Roses with related species and hybrids, including information in support of, or refuting,
the hypothesis that these roses are the hybrid result of the wild R. chinensis var.
spontanea and R. odorata var. gigantea. Ninety Rosa accessions, including China
Roses, a Miscellaneous Old Garden Rose, Noisettes, early Polyanthas, Bourbons, Teas,
and species from Sections Indicae and Synstylae were surveyed using 23 microsatellite
primer pairs. The trnH-psbA chloroplast intergenic spacer was also sequenced for the
China Roses, Misc. Old Garden Rose, and the species to look specifically at maternal
relationships.
A total of 291 alleles were scored for the 23 microsatellites, with alleles per locus
ranging from 6-22 and averaging 12.65. A dendrogram based on Dice similarity and a
three-dimensional Principle Coordinate Analysis (PCoorA) graph were plotted with the data. In the cluster analysis, the similarity coefficients ranged from ~0.15-0.99, with the
cultivated roses forming well-defined groups at about 0.45 similarity. These groups
generally reflected the American Rose Society horticultural classifications. A large
number of sports and synonyms in the China Rose group were identified through this
analysis as well. The PCoorA gave a better graphical representation of the relationships
of the species and cultivars, and with the inclusion of the chloroplast sequence
haplotypes, some maternal relationships could also be identified.
This study shows that the cultivated China Roses are a closely related group and
identified which accessions were likely Hybrid China Roses. The results also suggest
that the China Roses were maternally derived from R. chinensis var. spontanea. Based
on the microsatellites and chloroplast sequence haplotypes, the identity of the R. odorata
var. gigantea accessions in this study are suspect, but the China Roses may also have
this species in their background as the result of natural or artificial hybridization.

In vitro evaluation of antioxidant properties of Rosa roxburghii plant extract / Catharina Scholtz Janse van RensburgJanse van Rensburg, Catharina Scholtz January 2003 (has links)
Rosa roxburghii, also known as "Burr Rose" or "Chestnut Rose", originated in
southwest China and was introduced to the botanic garden in Calcutta around
1824. It was named after William Roxburgh who was the superintendent. The
extract of fruit of the Rosa roxburghii plant is the base ingredient of a range of
products that is commercially sold under the Cili Bao label. The extract is
composed of a wide range of substances of nutritional value, in particular a
relatively high amount of antioxidants such as ascorbate and plant phenols. It
has been reported before that supplementation with the fruit extract
resulted in increased red blood cell superoxide dismutase, catalase and the
reduced form of glutathione. An enhancement of the antioxidant status could
contribute to the protection against several diseases where oxidative stress is a
major factor in the pathology, such as atherosclerosis, cancer and immunity
stress. Several anecdotal reports with little (published) scientific support claim
that human supplementation of the Rosa roxburghii extract to the diet has a
protective effect against several diseases, including the above mentioned.
Medicinal and herbal plants are used in large sections in developing countries for
primary care and there is now also an increase in the use of natural therapies in
developed countries. However, plant extracts can also consist of anti-nutritional
and possible toxic components, such as oxalic acid and nitrates, which could
express cytotoxic and genotoxic activities. Therefore, understanding the health
benefits but also the potential toxicity of these plants is important. The objective
of this study was to investigate the beneficial properties of Rosa roxburghii
extract from an antioxidant potential perspective and in particular to investigate
the safety of the product for human consumption. For this purpose in vitro
evaluation of the cellular toxicity, mutagenicity and genotoxicity was performed.
In addition, specific biochemical parameters relating to the antioxidant status of
the product, i.e. antioxidant capacity, oxidative stress prevention and glutathione
redox state profiles were investigated in vitro as well as in vivo.
The results indicated that Rosa Roxburghii fruit extract was not mutagenic when
tested with Salmonella typhimurium strains TA 98, TA 100 and TA 102 in the
Ames test. The results, however, pointed towards an antimutagenic effect of the
extract in these strains against metabolic activated mutagens 2-
acetylaminoflurorene (2-AAF) and aflatoxin B1, and the direct-acting mutagen,
methanesulfonate (MMS). In primary rat hepatocyte, Rosa roxbughii extract did
not elicit double or single strand DNA damage and cell viability loss using the
single cell gel electrophoresis (Comet assay), lactate dehydrogenase leakage
test or the mitochondria1 conversion test of MTT to formazan (MTT test). Again
the opposite effect was observed: pre-treatment of hepatocytes with Rosa
roxbughii extract significantly reduced the effect of oxidative stress-induced
cellular- and genotoxicity. These results point to a protective effect against
oxidative stress which is reflected in an increase of the antioxidant capacity and
glutathione redox state (GSH/GSSG) in vitro (lymphoblasts) and in vivo (humans)
reported in this study. This study underlines the previously suggested potential of
this plant extract as a natural and safe antioxidant supplement. / Thesis (M.Sc. (Biochemistry))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2004.

How Pink will make you think : En kvalitativ mottagarstudie av Rosa Bandet-kampanjenTörnlund, Jesper, Bokström, Tobias January 2015 (has links)
