High-frequency modulated-backscatter communication using multiple antennas

Backscatter radio - the broad class of systems that communicate using scattered electromagnetic waves - is the driving technology behind many compelling applications such as radio frequency identification (RFID) tags and passive sensors. These systems can be used in many ways including article tracking, position location, passive temperature sensors, passive data storage, and in many other systems which require information exchange between an interrogator and a small, low-cost transponder with little-to-no transponder power consumption. Although backscatter radio is maturing, such systems have limited communication range and reliability caused, in part, by multipath fading. The research presented in this dissertation investigates how multipath fading can be reduced using multiple antennas at the interrogator transmitter, interrogator receiver, and on the transponder, or RF tag. First, two link budgets for backscatter radio are presented and fading effects demonstrated through a realistic, 915 MHz, RFID-portal example. Each term in the link budget is explained and used to illuminate the propagation and high-frequency effects that influence RF tag operation. Second, analytic envelope distributions for the M x L x N, dyadic backscatter channel - the general channel in which a backscatter system with M transmitter, L RF tag, and N receiver antennas operates - are derived. The distributions show that multipath fading can be reduced using multiple-antenna RF tags and by using separate transmitter and receiver antenna arrays at the interrogator. These results are verified by fading measurements of the M x L x N, dyadic backscatter channel at 5.8 GHz - the center of the 5725-5850 MHz unlicensed industrial, scientific, and medical (ISM) frequency band that offers reduced antenna size, increased antenna gain, and, in some cases, reduced object attachment losses compared to the commonly used 902-928 MHz ISM band. Measurements were taken with a custom backscatter testbed and details of its design are provided. In the end, this dissertation presents both theory and measurements that demonstrate multipath fading reductions for backscatter-radio systems that use multiple antennas.

Development of a real-time transient analyser for the SKA

Thesis (MEng)--Stellenbosch University, 2014. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The extension of the Karoo Array Telescope (KAT), MeerKAT, will be the most sensitive radio telescope in the southern hemisphere until it is superseded by the completion of the Square Kilometre Array (SKA). These instruments are to be constructed in the Karoo which is an area in South-Africa that is protected against Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) by the Astronomy Geographical Advantage (AGA) act. However, the telescope is also vulnerable to self-generated interference and specialised measurement systems are required to monitor RFI levels. The development of a ReAl Time Transient AnalYser (RATTY) is described and two Experimental Development Models (XDM) are compared. The first uses a mixing philosophy, and the second direct-sampling. The selection of these models was based on the evaluation of several analogue Front-End (FE) designs. A stripline-filter design process is presented along with the results obtained for custom filters developed for the FEs. Several analyses were compared to measurements performed with one of the devices and good agreement was shown between the system characteristics. Issues regarding the Spurious Free Dynamic Range (SFDR) of the FE designs were identified in the process and measurement-corrected simulations used to predict the achievable ranges. The outcome of the XDM comparison promotes the continued development of a direct-sampling strategy to fulfil the short-term goals of the project. A static calibration procedure is demonstrated for the mixing system and implemented to account for different FE configurations. An overview of the digital and software components of the RATTY system is given and Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) principles are applied during the construction of both systems. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die finale fase van die Karoo Reeks Teleskoop (KAT), MeerKAT, sal die sensitiefste radio teleskoop in die suidelike halfrond wees. Beide instrumente sal vatbaar wees vir radiofrekwensie steurings en sal opgerig word in ‘n wet-beskermde omgewing. Die teleskope is ook vatbaar vir radiofrekwensie steurings wat deur interne stelsels opgewek kan word. Dus word gespesialiseerde meetapparate benodig om die betrokke area en substelsels van die teleskope te monitor. Die ontwikkeling van ‘n meetinstrument vir die ontleding van kort-durasie tydseine (RATTY) word beskryf en twee eksperimentele ontwikkelings modelle word vergelyk. Hierdie modelle is gebaseer op die verfyning van voorafgaande ontwerpe vir die analoog substelsel van die instrument en hierdie proses word verduidelik. Cette thèse est une contribution à l’amélioration des observations pour les radiotélescopes à réseaux phasés en présence d’interférences. L’originalité de cette thèse repose sur l’utilisation de la séparation spatiale entre les sources cosmiques et les brouilleurs issus des télécommunications en se basant sur la cyclostationnarité de ces derniers. Cette thèse s’inscrit dans le cadre du projet européen SKADS pour l’amélioration des techniques de suppression d’interférences en radioastronomie pour les futurs instruments d’observations.Nous avons proposé trois techniques de traitement d’interférences : la détection,l’estimation et la soustraction, et le filtrage spatial. Les performances des techniques proposées ont été évaluées à travers des simulations sur des données synthétiqueset/ou réelles, et comparées aux techniques existantes. / This thesis is a contribution to observation improvements for phased array radiotelescopes, in the presence of radio frequency interferers (RFIs). The originality ofthe study is the use of the cyclostationarity property, in order to improve the spatial separation between cosmic sources and telecommunication signals. This thesis is part of the European SKADS project, which aims to improve RFI mitigation techniques for future instruments in radio astronomy.We have proposed three spatial processing techniques: detection, estimation and subtraction and spatial filtering. The performance of the techniques presented have been evaluated through simulations on synthetic and/or real data, and compared to existing approaches.

À medida que seu uso permeia diversos segmentos de negócio da economia, uma demanda por melhores práticas e soluções de RFID também ocorre, acelerando seus desenvolvimentos e aumentado a demanda por profissionais e metodologias que sejam capazes de promover seu uso correto e inteligente. Neste contexto, este trabalho apresenta características de sistemas de RFID e métodos orientativos para sua melhor seleção e aplicação. Ao levantar pontos chave de cada método, artigo e texto estudado, propõe-se e aplica-se uma metodologia, desenvolvida através da compilação de pontos fortes e fracos levantados da bibliografia, avaliando suas capacidades, limitações e características principais, procurando combiná-los para gerar uma metodologia mais abrangente, que considere tanto questões tecnológicas quanto de negócios, como custos, logística de obtenção de insumos e equipamentos, além de outras necessidades que podem ser colocadas pelas partes interessadas em um projeto e/ou aplicação da tecnologia RFID. Como contribuição final, esta dissertação demonstra a potencialidade de uma metodologia para seleção e aplicação de tecnologia RFID em automação / Abstract: Radio-frequency identification (RFID) is an emerging technology with enormous potential for application. It can be used where there is a need to identify distant objects, wirelessly, with data transmission via radio signals, followed by its storage and process on computer systems, making them available for future use. As its applications permeates many business segments of the economy, a demand for best practices and RFID solutions also occurs, accelerating their development and increasing the demand for professionals and methodologies that are capable of promoting its correct and intelligent use. In this context, this paper presents characteristics of RFID systems and orientative methods for its better selection and application. By raising key points of each studied method, paper and texts, it proposes and applies a methodology, developed through the compilation of the strengths and weaknesses arising from the literature, assessing their capabilities, limitations and key features, intending to combine them to generate a more comprehensive methodology, considering both technological and business issues, such as costs, logistics for obtaining supplies and equipment, and many other necessities that can be placed by stakeholders on a project and/or application of RFID technology. The studies are complemented by lifting characteristics of RFID systems and their performance from several authors point of view, and also by conducting a case study in the selection of RFID technology to form the radio frequency identification component in a tyre management system, making it possible to check the adequacy of the proposed methodology to a real case. Consumer concerns towards privacy: An empirical study

The purpose of the study was to determine consumer attitudes toward privacy and the influence of demographic factors on these attitudes. The study also sought to determine the willingness of participants to disclose selected individual information items and determine the awareness and acceptance level of technological innovations such as radio frequency identifiers (RFID) as they relate to privacy. A quantitative instrument was developed and a convenience sample of university students (N=203) was tested. Results showed that educational background played a role in the way participants perceived the applications of RFID.

Cmos Rf Cituits Sic] Variability And Reliability Resilient Design, Modeling, And Simulation

The work presents a novel voltage biasing design that helps the CMOS RF circuits resilient to variability and reliability. The biasing scheme provides resilience through the threshold voltage (VT) adjustment, and at the mean time it does not degrade the PA performance. Analytical equations are established for sensitivity of the resilient biasing under various scenarios. Power Amplifier (PA) and Low Noise Amplifier (LNA) are investigated case by case through modeling and experiment. PTM 65nm technology is adopted in modeling the transistors within these RF blocks. A traditional class-AB PA with resilient design is compared the same PA without such design in PTM 65nm technology. Analytical equations are established for sensitivity of the resilient biasing under various scenarios. A traditional class-AB PA with resilient design is compared the same PA without such design in PTM 65nm technology. The results show that the biasing design helps improve the robustness of the PA in terms of linear gain, P1dB, Psat, and power added efficiency (PAE). Except for post-fabrication calibration capability, the design reduces the majority performance sensitivity of PA by 50% when subjected to threshold voltage (VT) shift and 25% to electron mobility (μn) degradation. The impact of degradation mismatches is also investigated. It is observed that the accelerated aging of MOS transistor in the biasing circuit will further reduce the sensitivity of PA. In the study of LNA, a 24 GHz narrow band cascade LNA with adaptive biasing scheme under various aging rate is compared to LNA without such biasing scheme. The modeling and simulation results show that the adaptive substrate biasing reduces the sensitivity of noise figure and minimum noise figure subject to process variation and iii device aging such as threshold voltage shift and electron mobility degradation. Simulation of different aging rate also shows that the sensitivity of LNA is further reduced with the accelerated aging of the biasing circuit. Thus, for majority RF transceiver circuits, the adaptive body biasing scheme provides overall performance resilience to the device reliability induced degradation. Also the tuning ability designed in RF PA and LNA provides the circuit post-process calibration capability.

Asset tracking, monitoring and recovery system based on hybrid radio frequency identification and global positioning system technologies

Many single or hybrid technologies – Global Positioning System (GPS), Radio Frequency (RF), Bluetooth (BLT) or Wireless Fidelity (WiFi) – have been used to provide tracking information of an asset of interest. The use of hybrid technology in tracking assets has proven to be effective if the selection of the technologies used is done correctly. This study used a hybrid of GPS and Radio Frequency technologies to track assets of interest because of their characteristics for use inside and outside a building. In this study GPS geo-fencing was used and time interval was used to receive data from the technology. Heuristic methodology, which enabled us to divide a room into sections, was used, where testing was done in sections in a room with different types of material, such as bricks, wood or metal, and the RF signal degradation, called attenuation, was measured. A straight-line distance and a sum of distances at 30-minute intervals were calculated to determine how far the asset had travelled from the point of origin to the new position. A distance of less than 10 metres was ignored. Geofencing was used to trigger an event since it indicates that the asset has crossed the permitted boundary. An RF reader was placed at the door to identify when the asset left a building and triggered an event. A model was used for searching for a missing item in a room. The results showed that the system was able to produce two distances, one straight-line distance and the other the approximate sum distance travelled by the asset in 30-minute intervals. The RF model was able to find an asset in a room filled with different materials.

Radio frequency dielectric heating and hyperspectral imaging of common foodborne pathogens

Phebus / Intervention techniques to control foodborne pathogens, and rapid identification of pathogens in food are of vital importance to ensure food safety. Therefore, the first objective of this research was to study the efficacy of radio frequency dielectric heating (RFDH) against C. sakazakii and Salmonella spp. in nonfat dry milk (NDM) at 75, 80, 85, or 90°C. Using thermal-death-time (TDT) disks, D-values of C. sakazakii in high heat (HH)- and low heat (LH)-NDM were 24.86 and 23.0 min at 75°C, 13.75 and 7.52 min at 80°C, 8.0 and 6.03 min at 85°C, and 5.57 and 5.37 min at 90°C, respectively. D-values of Salmonella spp. in HH- and LH-NDM were 23.02 and 24.94 min at 75°C, 10.45 and 12.54 min at 80°C, 8.63 and 8.68 min at 85°C, and 5.82 and 4.55 min at 90°C, respectively. The predicted (TDT) and observed (RFDH) destruction of C. sakazakii and Salmonella spp. were in agreement, indicating that the organisms' behavior was similar regardless of the heating system (conventional vs. RFDH). However, RFDH can be used as a faster and more uniform heating method for NDM to achieve the target temperatures. The second objective of this research was to study if hyperspectral imaging can be used for the rapid identification and differentiation of various foodborne pathogens. Four strains of C. sakazakii, 5 strains of Salmonella spp., 8 strains of E. coli, and 1 strain each of L. monocytogenes and S. aureus were used in the study. Principal component analysis and kNN (k-nearest neighbor) were used to develop classification models, which were then validated using a cross-validation technique. Classification accuracy of various strains within genera including C. sakazakii, Salmonella spp. and E. coli, respectively was 100%; except within C. sakazakii, strain BAA-894, and within E. coli, strains O26, O45 and O121 had 66.67% accuracy. When all strains were studied together (irrespective of their genera) for the classification, only C. sakazakii P1, E. coli O104, O111 and O145, S. Montevideo, and L. monocytogenes had 100% classification accuracy; whereas, E. coli O45 and S. Tennessee were not classified (classification accuracy of 0%).

INTEGRATION OF S-BAND FQPSK TELEMETRY TRANSMITTERS AND GPS-BASED TSPI SYSTEMS WITH CLOSELY SPACED ANTENNAE – A SUCCESS STORY

Many of these platforms also include Global Positioning System (GPS)-based Time-Space-Position-Information (TSPI) instrumentation systems. Due to space and other limitations, many of these platforms have demanding antenna placement limitations requiring closely spaced antennas. This paper describes steps taken to identify and mitigate potential interference to GPS-based TSPI instrumentation systems by these new technology transmitters. Equipment characterization was accomplished to determine interference potential of the proposed new transmitters and susceptibility of several GPS TSPI receivers. Several filtering techniques were identified as possible solutions to the anticipated interference problems. Telemetry (TM)/GPS system mockups and laboratory tests of the same were accomplished. Open-air testing was then accomplished to validate laboratory results. Finally, on aircraft tests were accomplished prior to performing any aircraft system modifications. Results of these test efforts are presented for others to consider when planning similar modifications to other platforms.

THE X-33 EXTENDED FLIGHT TEST RANGE

The extended test range provides vehicle communications coverage from California to landing at Montana or Utah. This paper provides an overview of the approaches used to meet X-33 program requirements, including using multiple ground stations, and methods to reduce problems caused by reentry plasma radio frequency blackout. The advances used to develop the extended test range show other hypersonic and access-to-space programs can benefit from the development of the extended test range.
