Preparation and Characterization of Van der Waals Heterostructures

Coy Diaz, Horacio 28 June 2016 (has links)
In this dissertation different van der Waals heterostructures such as graphene-MoS2 and MoTe2-MoS2 were prepared and characterized. In the first heterostructure, polycrystalline graphene was synthesized by chemical vapor deposition and transferred on top of MoS2 single crystal. In the second heterostructure, MoTe2 monolayers were deposited on MoS2 by molecular beam epitaxy. Characterization of graphene-MoS2 heterostructures was conducted by spin and angle resolve spectroscopy which showed that the electronic structure of the bulk MoS2 and graphene in this van der Waals heterostructures is modified. For MoS2 underneath the graphene, a band structure renormalization and spin polarization are observed. The band structure of MoS2 is modified because the graphene induces screening which shifts the Г-point ~150 meV to lower binding compared to the sample without graphene. The spin polarization is explained by the dipole arising from band bending which breaks the symmetry at the MoS2 surface. For graphene, the band structure at lower binding energy shows that the Dirac cone remains intact with no significant doping. Instead, away from the Fermi level the formation of several gaps in the pi-band due to hybridization with states from the MoS2 is observed. For the heterostructures made depositing monolayer of MoTe2 on MoS2, the morphology, structure and electronic structure were studied. Two dimensional growth is observed under tellurium rich growth conditions and a substrate temperature of 200 °C but formation of a complete monolayer was not achieved. The obtained MoTe2 monolayer shows a high density of the mirror-twins grain boundaries arranged in a pseudo periodic wagon wheel pattern with a periodicity of ~2.6 nm. These grain boundary are formed due to Te-deficiency during the growth. The defect states from these domain boundary pin the Fermi level in MoTe2 and thus determine the band alignment in the MoTe2-MoS2 heterostructures.

Slagen om Fallujah, luftmakt och den nekande operationskonsten

Westbom, William January 2016 (has links)
The two battles for Fallujah took place in 2004. Earlier research states that air power was a key reason for the success following the second operation, and as a critical omission during the first operation. Following this statement that air power changed the way urban operations should be conducted it should be possible to use an air power theory to explain the different outcomes of the battles. The purpose of this study is to see if Robert Pape’s theory of denial strategy is applicable as an explanation for the two operations differences of outcome.   The method used for this study is a comparative case study of the two operations in which the operations are compared by analysing then using the framework of Pape’s theory.    The result of this study shows that the outcomes partly can be explained from Pape’s theory, but the results differ between the two components which leads to a discussion of what this means for the theory. The result contributes to the existing research and gives reason for criticism of the earlier research which states that it was Close Air Support (CAS) that was successful during the second operation. This study shows that CAS was mostly used during the first operation and only partly used during the second, successful, operation. This study states that it was the use of operative interdiction, one of the three components of Pape’s theory, which led to the second operations success.

Hur kan framgång i strid i bebyggelse uppnås på taktisk nivå? : En teoriprövande fallstudie av Alice Hills teori

Norbäck, Alexander January 2021 (has links)
The world is rapidly becoming more urbanised and with key infrastructure being located inside or close to cities the probability of urban warfare in the next major conflict is very high. This thesis examines how the use of Alice Hills theory can explain success in urban warfare on the tactical level of war. The purpose of the thesis is to test the validity of Hills theory. To examine to what extent Hills’s theory can explain the success of the coalition forces during Operation Phantom Fury and the failure of Operation Vigilant Resolve, a theory testing case study is applied. The two cases have similar background variables, which allows for a structured comparison of the two cases. The analysis is based on Hills’s success factors in urban warfare. The results of the analysis reveal that Hills theory can explain the success of the coalition during Operation Phantom Fury and the failure of Operation Vigilant Resolve, thereby strengthening the validity of Hills theory. The results highlight the need to control the civilian population during urban combat. However, due to the difficulties of measuring success factors such as leadership and morale with the chosen method, the external validity of the results is negatively affected.

African American Female Clergy in Dual Clergy Marriage

Hutchinson, Demetra Keyanna-Michelle 01 January 2019 (has links)
Burgeoning evidence has shown rapid growth of licensed and ordained female clergy within the Protestant church. Consequently, dual clergy couples have also increased in number. Research has suggested that African American female clergy have experienced greater challenges than male clergy in leadership roles in the church, including social isolation, sexism, and glass-ceiling barriers. Female clergy are also disproportionately affected by mental and physical health complications including depression, obesity, and burnout. Guided by adult personal resilience theory and its tenets of determination, endurance, adaptability, and recuperability, this interpretive phenomenological study focused on exploring the lived experiences of 13 African American female clergy leaders married to male clergy leaders. African American female clergy, recruited through both purposeful and snowball sampling, through interviews shared their stories of living in a dual-clergy marriage. Using Colaizzi's seven-step process of qualitative analysis and coding, two major themes of Resolve and Resilience, and four sub-themes including Barriers to the Church, Multiple Roles, Health and Wellness, and Adaptation were identified. Findings from this research expand the current body of knowledge on leadership and gender roles in the Protestant church, including the need for a greater understanding of the experiences of female clergy in male-dominated congregational and ministerial spaces. Implications for social change include opening conversations regarding the unique experiences of African American female clergy, supporting awareness of the social, mental and physical challenges of female clergy, and engaging in larger conversations about equal access in all areas of church leadership.

Konflikthantering i förskolan : en kvalitativ intervjustudie om olika sätt att arbeta med konflikthantering i förskolan

Ilgöy, Hülya January 2013 (has links)
The aim of this thesis was to find out how the teachers I have interviewed, felt that they worked with and looked at conflict management. The aim was also to find similarities and differences in teachers' ways of working with conflict. With the help of my questions, I got answers to what I wanted to explore in my essay. I used these questions: What strategies do the teachers I interviewed for managing conflicts in preschool? What tools do the teachers I interviewed see as most effective in the process of conflict management? Are there differences and similarities in the way that the teachers I interviewed work with current conflict? What factors, according to the informants starts a conflict? What is the teachers’ definition of a conflict and how does their definition affect their approach when working with conflicts? In my study, I have used a qualitative approach in the form of structured interview, to get material for my thesis. In my interviews, I used an interview guide and a tape recorder.I analyzed my material using three different theories. The first theory is Vygotsky's theory of learning and development from a sociocultural perspective, the other is Skinner's theory of positive feedback and the third is Freud's psychoanalytic theory. I have also used the previous research to analyze my empirical material. Previous research describing various approaches to working with conflicts. I have also used the book Solution -oriented pedagogy as a tool to analyze my material.      The study shows that it seems as the most important thing in one's work with conflict, is the way a teacher look at and relate to a conflict. Many of the teacher see a conflict as something constructive and positive. There is a different approach and strategies in the way the different pre-schoolteachers work and help the kids to take on and resolve a conflict. The similarities in the teachers work with conflict is that they find dialogue as an important tool and that the language is important in resolving a conflict.

Både och - för säkerhets skull : en kvalitativ fallstudie om Sveriges behov av både bredare internationella försvarssamarbeten och nationell försvarsförmågetillväxt

Davidsson, Andreas January 2020 (has links)
Sweden's decision to participate in Operation Inherent Resolve (OIR) in Iraq 2015 appears to be a paradox in the perspective of the new defence policy which emphasises an increased national defence capacity. The Swedish Armed Forces is expected to increase both its national capacity and its international commitments despite personnel and economical limitations?Besides this paradox the Swedish decision to participate in a US-lead operation appears to be a deviant case in several perspectives which has not been investigated by previous research. The Swedish Parliament decision is made in a security environment tinged by Russian aggression against Ukraine. At the same time the domestic situation is framed by a weak minority government which relies on unorthodox political agreements to survive. Despite its weak position the government abandons traditional practise like the operation´s legal framework, the processing of the government bill etc.The purpose of this thesis is to explain why Sweden seems to seek broader international military cooperation and deepening its international commitments when there is an increased need for national defence capacity-building.When Swedish security and sovereignty is threatened, directly by Russian aggression and indirectly by weakened international institutions it is a rational choice to seek broader and deeper cooperation with other partners. OIR is hereby a unique opportunity to an operational cooperation with the only state that alone can counteract Russian aggression in the Baltic region, USA.By a decision-making process with the ability to apprehend both foreign policy and defence policy ends the political opposition abandons ideological stands and political benefits enabling the parliament decision.

Nature Of Solute-Solvent Interaction : Effect Of Solvent Polarity On Excited State Structure Of 2,2,2-Trifluroacetophenone And Effect Of Hydrogen Bonding In Hydrated Electron Absorption Spectrum

Chowdhury, Brojokishore 11 1900 (has links)
In solution, the environment around the solute is determined solely by the solvent molecules, which are present closer to the solute. This interaction between solute and solvent shell is very crucial for equilibrium structure and reactivity of the solute. In the thesis, first we have investigated control of solvent polarity on the excited structure of 2,2,2 trifluroacetophenone and later effect of electronic excitation on the solvent shell organization has been described. It has been reported in literature that the lowest energy triplet configuration of 2,2,2 trifluroacetophenone corresponds to n,π* state. There are some other reports in favor of the probable existence of 2,2,2 trifluroacetophenone in n,π* lowest triplet state. Thus, transient absorption and time resolved resonance Raman spectroscopic methods have been used along with theoretical calculations to investigate the discrepancy in the assignment of the lowest triplet state configuration It has been observed that the lowest triplet state of 2,2,2 trifluroacetophenone is indeed nπ* and there is a solvent polarity induced change in triplet state energy ordering and structure changes. The absorption spectrum of hydrated electron is broad and structureless. So, it was though that the broadening feature could be attributed to homogeneous and inhomogeneous broadening. Transient resonance Raman spectrum of the water bending mode in presence of hydrated electron has been recorded at different excitation wavelengths. Interestingly, it has been observed that, peak position of water bending mode in presence of hydrated electron alters with change of excitation wavelength. A model has been proposed based on the experimental data.
