#SharingIsCaring : An Exploratory Study of Content of Tweets, Situation of Tweeting and Motivations to Use Twitter while Watching Television Series

Skibbe, Linda Isabelle January 2013 (has links)
The internet and social media have had a significant impact on recipients’ media consumption. As the converging media environment recipients face today offers not only more media products but also new practices of using certain media products, this study focuses on how the social micro-blogging service Twitter impacts the watching of television series. The presented study aims at explaining a new form of media reception by employing a multi-method approach. A content analysis case study of tweets about the US-American series “Homeland” and the German series “Tatort” will give insight into the Twitter content on two different series. Further, qualitative semi-standardized interviews and a survey will shed light on the situational aspects and motivational factors to use Twitter while watching television series. The uses and gratification theory is used as a backdrop to study the motivations to use Twitter while watching television series. The results of the content analysis on the two series indicate that there is a strong focus on the series itself within the tweets. Nevertheless, both series provide somewhat differing Twitter content. While tweets on “Tatort” are more critical and realistic towards the series, tweets about “Homeland” are more likely to be referential. The situation of tweeting while watching television series seems to be characterized by the usage of a second screen. The major motivational factors identified in this study are socializing at a distance and exchanging social information. All in all this study presents a fascinating new form of media reception and furthermore offers description and explanation of its application. Additionally it provides suggestions as to how to approach such a fast-changing, new media environment.

Elisson, Linda, Herrdin, Margot January 2011 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to enhance the understanding of how the reception of older immigrants can be perceived in a swedish medium-sized municipality. The questions asked was how representatives from immigrant associations and municipality officials looked upon the reception. To investigate this have documents concerning the reception of immigrants been analysed. Representatives from three immigrant associations have been interviewed, and three municipality officials partook in a focusgroupinterview. Theories used to analyze the material were Aaron Antonovskys theory sense of coherence (KASAM), Roine Johanssons organisational theory and Berth Danermarks thoughts on cooperation. The result from the study indicated that no special planning is made for the reception of older immigrants. Both the representatives and the officials were critical of the reception. The criticism concerned the lack of planning and cooperation between organisations that meet immigrants. The importance of using the knowledge from integrated countrymen was stressed to create understanding for cultural differences.

”Det är så himla onödigt allt det där” : – en studie om hur barn uppfattar våld på tv-nyheter / It is so awfully unnecessary all those things : – a study of how children experience violence on TV news

Denzler, Sofia, Åslund, Linnea, Öström, Suzette January 2009 (has links)
The purpose of our thesis was to examine how children think about violence on TV news. We also wanted to find out what children think about violence, both in other TV programmes and in reality. Adults often speak for children, we wanted to hear the children’s own opinions. This study was based on theories of socialization and reception research. We showed violent news clips for 12 eleven and twelve year olds. In the meantime, we recorded the children’s reactions on film. Afterward, we interviewed them about their thoughts and feelings related to the clips. Our study is based on interviews and observations. We came to the conclusion that the children in our study think violence are very unnecessary. Most of the children did not find the clips particularly scary, but many mentioned that they think blood is disgusting to watch.

The performance evaluation model for reception clerks in the hospitality industry

Chen, Su-ching 20 January 2006 (has links)
The hospitality industry is a service industry of multiple arts. Despite the various scales of hotels, they all aim at the same goal ¡V to provide various services to satisfy the demands of the public in the aspects of food, clothing, shelter, transportation, and entertainment. ¡§Human¡¨ is the most important resource of the hospitality industry, and the master of utilizing and manipulating other resources in this industry. But in practice, the performance of ¡§human¡¨ is volatile and unstable, so it is hard for managers to persistently maintain the service standard for a long term. In other words, in the service industries such as hotels, the improvement of service quality hinges on the management of employees¡¦ behaviors before they interact with clients. Thus, if performance management can be properly implemented, the employees can understand the correct service indices and provide satisfactory services to the clients. However, whether an enterprise has reasonable performance management indices and systems, the evaluation result and effectiveness are closely correlated. Therefore, this study aimed to provide a reference standard that the hospitality industry could use to evaluate their reception clerks and the clerks could use the evaluation model as a goal they work for, in hope of enhancing the competitiveness of the both parties. In the procedure of the research, the first stage was based on literature reviews to organize and analyze the performance indices for evaluating reception clerks in the hospitality industry. In the second stage, an interview with professional managers of the industry was conducted to verify the indices and hierarchy levels. At last, Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) was applied to derive the weight of indices for evaluating the reception clerks and establish a performance evaluation model for reception clerks in the hospitality industry. In terms of the derived weights, among the 3 constructs, ¡§work achievement¡¨ had the highest weight ratio, taking up as high as 42%. As a result, the property of a hotel reception clerk¡¦s work heavily relied on work achievement. According to the service characteristics of the hospitality industry, as the reception clerks were the most front personnel to contact and serve clients, their service quality, professional ability, problem-solving ability, and etc. would be promptly presented to the clients and represent the company in clients¡¦ first impression. So they were of high importance. This study also verified the application of the study results to the practice. Thus, in addition to building a ¡§Reception Clerk Performance Evaluation Scale¡¨ with derived indices and weights, the researcher also sought the assistance of managers of a hotel to conduct the empirical study. The results also showed that the study was in accordance with the current situation and could be practically applied to the industry. And in the survey, it was found that performance evaluation systems were not prevalent among the surveyed hotels. Less than 30% of the hotels implemented the evaluation system. Thus, if performance appraisal operations could be effectively implemented in the industry to reinforce management and motivate employees, it was believed that the overall business performance could be enhanced and the competitiveness of the industry could be strengthened too.

Schneider, Susanne January 2008 (has links)
<p>The principal aim of this thesis is to investigate the reception of a text about the Holocaust by pupils of a class in upper secondary school. The text is Fatelessness by Imre Kertész, a text which can be seen as a complex account of the Holocaust. The study tries to shed light on the pupils’ reactions to the text and how the reading influenced their image of the Holocaust.</p><p>The empirical material derives from a qualitative case study consisting of inquiries, interviews observations and written material from lessons, etc. The theoretical basis for the analysis is focusing on Kathleen McCormick’s concept of repertoires. Both texts and readers have repertoires which can match, mismatch or exist in tension with each other. The analysis focuses on parts of the pupils’ reception in form of the question of genre, style and language, the main character and the image of the Holocaust.</p><p>The study shows that from an overall perspective the repertoires of the pupils and the text do not match. Instead they often exist in tension. The text has different signals about genre which can be interpreted in several ways. Fatelessness was a challenge for the pupils because of its language with long sentences, many descriptions and untranslated words, mainly German. The strongest reactions were to the main character Gyurka, whom the pupils at first interpreted as cold, naive and optimistic. For many of the pupils this image changed at the reading when they started to view his manners as a way to survive the concentration camps. Even though the text was challenging the images the pupils had about the Holocaust in many ways, their images did not change overall. Despite the fact that the pupils saw the reading of the book mainly as homework they were very engaged in lesson discussions.</p><p>The study points to the importance of context and discussions about what the pupils bring with them when they encounter the repertoire of the literature of testimony, in this case Holocaust literature. It can be important for teachers to have an understanding of their pupils’ repertoires when they select what literature to read in class. The study also indicates that, as McCormick suggests, tension can be the most productive meeting of the repertoires.</p>

Moby-Dick as Proto-Modernist Prophecy

Harrell, Randall W. 16 December 2015 (has links)
This project relies on two main bodies of work: the text and reception history of Moby-Dick. I argue that the novel’s prophetic insights unfold in its failure and resurrection. The reception history consists of early reviewers, biographers, and critics both hailing and discounting Moby-Dick’s literary value. The first section, “Proto-Modernist Melville: Specific Difficulty in Moby-Dick,” explores the peculiar difficulty inherent in the text of Moby-Dick, namely its divergent, evasive, and hieroglyphic properties. Chapter 2, “Reception: Nineteenth-Century Failure and Modernist Success,” chronicles the novel’s reception history, focusing largely on the critics of twentieth-century modernism. In “Moby-Dick as Prophetic Anticipation and Fulfillment,” I examine the link between the inherent difficulty found within Moby-Dick and its reception history. I propose that Melville’s novel theorizes its prophetic anticipation of literary modernism as well as Melville’s own authorial failure and redemption narrative.

Patienters upplevelser av att behandlas av en behandlingssjuksköterska : en intervjustudie / Patients' experiences of receiving treatment from a nurse practitioner : an interview study

Elebring, Erica January 2015 (has links)
Varje tema delades vidare in i fyra kategorier.
