The Critical Consumer of Today’s Inauthentic Messages : A qualitative interview study on how young people make sense of communication promoting sustainable food consumption

Böhm, Anna January 2023 (has links)
In Swedish society, food is the fourth most prominent area of consumption. The number of large grocery shops is increasing, and today a consumer can choose between several different brands for the same product. However, there is still a lack of knowledge about defining sustainable food consumption as well as a lack of knowledge about how the consumer receives communication about sustainable food consumption. By using semi-structured qualitative in-depth interviews with students from a Swedish university, this study investigates whether sustainable food consumption is relevant to young people living with limited resources and how they define the concept. The study also examines how the interviewees make sense of communication promoting sustainable food consumption. Results illustrate that sustainable food consumption is not as relevant for students due to today’s expensive food prices. However, these students were also motivated and informed. They knew how to consume sustainably but were constrained by the economic situation. In addition, the students had difficulty defining sustainable food consumption, while they had no problems defining the more general concept of sustainability. Secondly, the public opinion about communication to promote sustainability was negative because the messages were either misleading or not transparent enough; the recipients became confused and critical. The messages were therefor interpreted as inauthentic.

Films about the Donbas as ‘Prophecies’? : The German reception of Klondike and Donbass amid the (ongoing) situation in the Donbas

Oerlemans, Tes Clasina Jacoba January 2023 (has links)
This thesis examines how the Donbas is discussed in German reviews of Klondike and Donbass, what it can tell us about German ideas regarding the Donbas, and whether these have changed over time. Using qualitative content analysis, reviews from German (online) media are analysed and the emerging themes are described. The theories used to interpret the findings are reception theory and narrative persuasion. It concludes that both reception theory and narrative persuasion can be found in German reviews of Klondike and Donbass, as the films are viewed differently in the context of the full-scale invasion, but also affect the way reviewers see real-life events.

The Medieval Myth of The Holy Grail and its Resonance in Contemporary Popular Culture : A Reception Theory Analysis of The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown

Juhlin, Johanna January 2018 (has links)
This essay investigates why the Myth of the Holy Grail continue to occur within popular culture. Myths, tales and legends from ancient times have inspired authors throughout the centuries. The readers are not only served with a spectacular adventure, but the myths also contain messages with a moral and ethical guidance for us as beholders. This particular myth can be found within different media in our time and the essay will attempt to give some answers as to why the myth reappears in new forms over and over again. An analysis is performed by using the methodology of aesthetic reception within reception theory. The material chosen for the analysis is the work of art; The Da Vinci Code by author Dan Brown, where two different media forms will be represented, the novel and the film. The findings in the analysis revealed that the key to understanding the reasons for the occurrence of this medieval myth is the element of a quest that is present within the myth. This ingredient, where you embark on an adventure, will create feelings of excitement for the beholder. A second aspect found is that we as humans have an interest in our history. Therefore, myths and legends from our historical past will be naturally alluring for beholders and especially if they are linked to philosophical questions and ideas that can be applied to our modern society. The success that has followed The Da Vinci Code has its explanation in the fact that Brown has managed to make the myth of the Holy Grail more contemporary, the myth has then been rejuvenated. A suggestion for further research is to perform a study on beholders in focus group interviews in order to validate the findings in the analysis.

A Subversão da Fronteira: o spaghetti western como crítica ao ideal de progresso.

Sousa, César Henrique Guazzelli e 24 February 2014 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2016-08-10T11:21:33Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 CESAR HENRIQUE GUAZZELLI E SOUSA.pdf: 4384926 bytes, checksum: db2268c94c8cd5f7de0809fdbcab9b28 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2014-02-24 / The present work was made over the perspective that the spaghetti westerns, Italian western films produced for the popular cinemas between the 1960s and 1970s, represent the frontier myth on cinema as a parody, in a way that subvert the basic premises of the classical American western and, doing that, perform the frontier myth ironicaly, sustaining itself on a rhetoric that is a rebut to the ideal of progress. Instead of the formalist film analysis, we propose an interpretation of the films researched trough their appropriation by the public, concurring with the theoretical proposal of the reception theory and the parody theory. The spaghetti westerns are here analyzed as a carnivalized vision of its referent, refreshing it for the public, following the large number of social convulsions and crisis that emerge in the western world in the middle of the 1960s.

De Klerk, Elizabeth January 2004 (has links)
With a view to conducting a study of the identity portrayal as presented in the film Paljas - and more specifically of the two youth characters, Willem and Emma - a few relevant theoretical concepts are included in this investigation, i.e. developmental psychology, film theory and narratology. By analysing and interpreting the film-related representation of the two youth characters it was possible to establish to which extent and in which way the identity portrayal of the two youth characters enhances the main theme of the film. It was, accordingly, also possible to elucidate facets of the placement of the fictional reality as represented in the film text and the reality as such in parallel correlation. According to the research method that was implemented certain aspects of different related sciences proved to be of integral importance. Such aspects included the psychological development of the child during mid-childhood years, the psychological development of the late adolescent, the application of film-related techniques pertaining to character portrayal and characterisation in narratology. During the course of this research the focus was on the identity portrayal of the two characters, Willem and Emma as youth characters in the film Paljas. An analysis of the identity portrayal of the youth characters implies that the investigation and application of narratology and film theory be incorporated in conjunction with theories pertaining to developmental psychology as specific point of focus. The research results were thus described by means of an integrated method. The children's experience of interpersonal communication at their home exercises an important influence on their identity development. The parents create the primary framework of reference for the children's attitude, value systems and convictions in connection with life in general as well as for their own sense of the self and their self-estimation. Key words: film, film text, film theory, identity portrayal, interpretation, youth characters, late adolescence, mid-childhood years, narratology, developmental psychology, Paljas, reception theory. / Thesis (M.A. (Languages))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2004.
