Silva, Reijane Pinheiro da January 2011 (has links)
From the analysis of an emigratory flux of brazilian people from Goiás to the Republic of Ireland, this thesis aims to understand how the elements of the regional identity of these imigrants are reinforced, negociated or denied in the context of living abroad. I´ve tried also to understand how is the impact of that experience in the reading that these individuals make of the place they belong and those where they transit. The ethnography and the data collection were made in Brazil and in Ireland, between 2009 and 2011, in the cities of Anápolis (GO – Brazil) and Tullamore, Kilbeggan and Gort (Ireland), showing a multi situated feature. Considering the brazilian international emigration estimates, presented by IBGE and MRE, showing that sinds the 1980´s the state of Goiás points out as an exporter of workers to foreign countries, I´ve tried to identify the elements that feed the duration of that process, which, besides of being inserted in the brazilian emigratory flux scope (that started in the same period), suggests the development of a emigratory culture in the state. As evidenced by ethnography, the centrality of the rural elements in the “vida goiana” keeps forming the senses that the individuals ascribe to the world surrounding them, even when they go to another geographic areas or face different ways of living and thinking the world. In that sense, the Region stays as a central reference of life. By taking their “sertaneja” music, typical food, “quadrilha” parties, “berrante” and country dances to Ireland, these imigrants include their region identity in the play of identity negotiations, evidencing the diversity that makes us brazilian.

The second city in Mexico (Guadalajara) and Peru (Arequipa), from the 1880s to the 1920s

Martin, Guillemette 08 April 2013 (has links)
Belonging to the now classical historiographical field of the national construction the thesis has for main objective to understand the role played by regions in the process of consolidation of the nation-state in Latin America, in the transition between nineteenth and twentieth centuries (1880-1920). The thesis wants to demonstrate that, if this period corresponds in all Latin American countries to a strong centralization moment from the central power, it’s also an important moment in the definition of regional identities and it participation to the national destiny. To carry out this interpretative project of the political contemporary evolution of Latin America, the doctoral analysis proposes to compare the political speech and arguments emitted by the elites from Guadalajara, in Mexico, and Arequipa in Peru, from a systematic and detailed revision of the regional press published in both cities.

Regionalizace Západního Balkánu a Visegrádských zemí - politický a mediální dikurz v Makedonii / Region Building : the process of regionalization of defense and security cooperation in Visegrad and Western Balkan countries

Vanchoski, Aleksandar January 2016 (has links)
The process of region building and regionalization is an emerging phenomenon examined in the same time by historians, geographers, political scientists, economists diplomats and other scientific profiles. The concepts of region and regionalization could appear at different spatial scales, such as supra-state, sub-state or as a cross-border units and processes. Furthermore region and regionalization are complex for defining because they incorporate different narratives and categories as regional identity, spatial borders and delineating, cultural and social homogeneity, political and economic interdependence etc. Regions are invented, re-invented or constructed with purpose to reply to different functional, territorial and administrative purposes. In the era of ongoing globalization and deepening of the European integration, regions are becoming powerful tool for achieving different goals and interests. Nowadays regions, regional cooperation, regional identity are becoming a terms very often used in political and public discourses for different kind of mobilization. Western Balkan, similarly as Visegrad and Baltic regional formats is one of the emerging spatial formation that is appearing in the context of EU integration policies. In Macedonian political and public discourse these tendencies are...

Regiony v čase a prostoru: problém regionalizace / Regions through time and space: Problem of regionalization

Semian, Michal January 2016 (has links)
The thesis is rooted in the new regional geography paradigm that gained strength in geographical thought since the 1980s. This approach is characterized by emphasizing the socially constructed nature of regions; thus, regions are scrutinized as a historically contingent process. A region is formed, reproduced and eventually disappears in time. The thesis works with the assumption that a plurality of regions, that exists in changing time- space contexts of different mechanisms and meanings, can be experienced de facto in any particular area. In simpler terms, it can be understood as a plurality of regional images produced on the one side by regional actors to fulfil their particular goals and on the other regional images produced by inhabitants in and outside the region in order to understand the outside world and position themselves within it. Motivation for the production of images can vary, from a simple manifestation of one position in the regional system, through the attempt to attract attention towards the region to exploitation of the regional potential in order to fulfil particular power-oriented aims. The general idea of a region can be sought throughout the synthesis of the many regional images that can be understood as somewhat layers of a region. The thesis contributes to the discussion...

Making Place for Space : a History of 'Space Town' Kiruna 1943-2000

Backman, Fredrick January 2015 (has links)
Science and technology have a tendency to clump together in places where they spawn other forms of societal activities. Sometimes these places become famous through processes known as place-making, or the social construction of place. Because the scientific and technological activities affect the places, and the places conversely affect the science and technology, it is relevant to study how and why these connections emerge. This dissertation examines the particular case of the northern Swedish town of Kiruna, which has become known for being a `space town' because of its scientific, technological, and other activities that relate to the near space around the earth. The overall objective is to analyse the processes underlying the making of Kiruna as a space town in the period 1943--2000. Five parts make up the study. First is an examination of how the development of space physics research in Kiruna led to the setting up of a scientific observatory. The second part studies how the Swedish participation in the European Space Research Organisationmade Kiruna the place for a rocket base. Next follows an analysis of how local business efforts contributed to forming a new satellite technology business and the Space House office building. The fourth part concerns how the visions to establish a space `university' eventually led to the emergence of the Space Campus. Last is an epilogue that briefly analyses the space tourism efforts in Kiruna. A central finding is that the space town has emerged as the result of entwined processes where, on the one hand, ideas about the near space around the earth have led to new activities and physical structures, and, on the other hand, these new activities and built structures conversely have inspired to new ideas. Of importance is also the geographical place where these developments have occurred. Here, a reoccurring argument to placing the activities and structures in Kiruna was the town's geographically favourable location for specific scientific and technological activities. Another finding is that the development has gradually led to the emergence of a kind of identity or notion of Kiruna as a particular place for space activities. Although this form of place-making has occurred largely through spontaneous processes, it was also the result of intentional efforts. Together, these different place-making processes have formed the `space town' of Kiruna.

Architecture et figures identitaires de l’Italie unifiée (1861-1921) / Architecture and Commemorations : Myth-making and the Quest for Identity in Unified Italy (1861-1921)

Renard, Thomas 23 June 2012 (has links)
This dissertation questions the place and role of architecture in the Italian national building process at the turn of the twentieth century. We chose to isolate several paradigmatic figures of identity (such as Dante or some distinctive features of medieval architecture) and to study them through the prism of a number of commemorations held in Italy in the first decades after unification (1861-1921). The analysis of three commemorations bound together by the activity of the art historian Corrado Ricci constitutes the core of our study. The eighth centenary of the creation of the University of Bologna in 1888 and the architectural activity of Alfonso Rubbiani are studied as one of the first examples of a commemoration not marked by the construction of a new monument but by the reinvention of an old one. The careful consideration of the 1911 celebrations for the 50th anniversary of Italian unification and especially the regional and ethnographic exhibition held in Rome on this occasion allowed us to define a new articulation between national and regional identity, defined as a unity of national artistic genius through a multiplicity of genius loci “rediscovered” in the architecture of late Middle Ages and early Renaissance Commune. The third and main object of our analysis are the commemorations for the 600th anniversary of Dante's death in 1921. For this event many buildings were restored throughout Italy, especially in Florence and Ravenna. In both cities, the impact of commemorations reached an urban scale, leading to the creation of whole areas known as zone dantesche: spatial evidences of the powerful myth that the figure of Dante embodied in this historical conjuncture. Supported by the newly acquired value of heritage in the national building process, this commemoration was a crucial step in the invention of a neomedieval city and its mass diffusion through a set of visual stereotypes.

Fernandes, Débora Araújo 24 August 2016 (has links)
This dissertation aims to analyze the teaching of History in elementary schools of Pará State, Brazil, in the first decades of the twentieth century, considering the representations produced by authors from Pará and conveyed in Apostilas de História do Pará (1915) by Theodoro Braga, and Noções de História Pátria (1920) by Sílvio Nascimento and Raymundo Proença textbooks, and used in educational institutions of this State. Using documentary and bibliographical research, the regionalization of history teaching in the first decades of the twentieth century was explored, analyzing how the textbooks presented the national history and regional historical processes. The theoretical approach permeates the study of Chervel (1990) about the school subjects of Choppin (2004, 2009) and of Bittencourt (2008) on the production and use of textbooks, promoting a dialogue with the representation concept of Chartier (1990). In addition to these authors, considerations of Bourdieu (1989) are also relevant on the construction of mechanisms of regional identity. With this research, it could be verified that the regionalization of history teaching is not something new and that teaching proposed in the two analyzed textbooks was meant to forge a regional identity for Pará population, at the same time that helped in the construction of Brazilian national identity.

This dissertation discusses the communicational texture instituted between the comedic constructions of a radio program and the identitarian images of its audience. It analyzes the different social types and scenarios, humor strategies and relationships with listeners that are constructed in the radio comedy program called Top Show, broadcast by Rádio Peperi Top 104 FM, an FM radio station in São Miguel do Oeste, state of Santa Catarina, Brazil, as well as the programs relations with the media-related context of reception. The dissertations goal is to investigate how that radio program includes in its comedic constructions symbolic elements that are present in the daily culture of its listeners and to understand how the meanings, appropriations, alliances and refusals of those constructions are constituted in the program?s reception. It also analyzes the discoursive construction of regional identities as expressed in the caricatural and parodistic elements that are presented in the program and the audiences symbolic operations. For the analysis of the areas of production/product/reception the author adopts a multi-methodological approach that covers these various dimensions of the communication process. The results show a blending of referents connected to the media-related experience and to the matrices of regional culture, such as accent, tradition, rural space and ethnic identities, which permeate the communicational devices that make up the radio program and establish reading alliances with the reception.
