The two Mauretaniae : their romanization and the imperial cult

Gironi, Claudia 11 1900 (has links)
The 'Romanization' of the African provinces of Mauretania Tingitana and Mauretania Caesariensis was in fact a two-way process of exchange between Roman and African elements which resulted in a uniquely Romano-African civilization. The imperial cult highlights issues common to all Romanization processes, such as ruler-subject interaction and the role of local initiative in bringing about change, as well as unique issues such as the impact of politics on emperor-worship. The success of the imperial cult was hampered by the fact that only a select few - notably the wealthy local elite - derived direct benefit from the process, and by the fact that, because the pre-Roman Mauretaniae had no established ruler-cults, the imperial cult failed to assimilate with local tradition. As a result, the cult was unable either to make a decisive impact on the Romanization of the Mauretanians, or to achieve any real religious unity among them. / History / M.A. (Ancient History)

J.C.) : I, Texte / Central hearth buildings in the Aegean, in Cyprus, and in the Levant, from the end of the Bronze Age until the beginning of the Archaic Period (12th- 6th c. B.C.)

Lamaze, Jérémy 20 October 2012 (has links)
The aim of this study is to investigate a series of edifices found in the Aegean, on Cyprus and in the East dating from the end of the Bronze Age through to the Archaic Period and collectively referred to as ‘Hearth Temples’. The study is centered on an evaluation of the architecture and artefacts relating to a type of building often thought to have constituted elite housing from the so- called Dark Ages. The presence of a hearth/altar in the centre of these constructions, which served as a religious focal point, suggests that they played a significant role in the genesis of the Greek temple. Within the timeframe of this study, these buildings display banquet halls designed for elite rituals and in which the main activity was the practice of animal sacrifice. These rooms, often serving multiple functions, gave rise to the first ‘citizen temples’ within the context of Cretan poleis. The relevant testimonia are listed here in an exhaustive catalogue that also takes into account relevant object finds. The first part of the study concerns itself with a re- evaluation of the nomenclature associated with these monuments, before analyzing the antecedents to this type of architecture at the end of the Bronze Age and for each of the geographical regions in question. The following chapter questions the symbolic dimension of fire in these civilizations, incarnated in Greek antiquity by Hestia, the goddess of the hearth, as well as by her role in political institutions (andreia, prytaneis etc.). In the next chapter, the mutual influence these different Mediterranean regions had on each other is explored, both in terms of material culture (exotica, architectural influence) and in terms of religious beliefs (religious syncretism). The final chapter brings together all of the findings and summarizes the architectural problems associated with these buildings, for which a series of tables is also included.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Juliana Barros Prata Carvalho.pdf: 269444 bytes, checksum: 833c68807ae7d2c953ab89a7549ecae3 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2007-08-08 / This work is an attempt to understand Brazilian religious syncretism via Grande Sertão: Veredas . Therefore the essay tries to establish a metaphoric parallel between syncretic and religious plurality contained in João Guimarães Rosa s only romance and Brazilian religious syncretism. This essay is focused on the area of Science of Religion but because it uses a romance - which belongs to the field of literature - as a tool it dialogs with that field of study. The bridge between fiction and reality is established as a live link in constant transformation. Both the characters of the book and the Brazilian people are treated here as beings in a process of discovery of their human identity, as a work-in-progress, under the light of the work of Darcy Ribeiro, Gilberto Freyre and other theorists. A fundamental part of such discovery is the way through which individuals try to relate to objects which are thought to have religious transcendence. Such process will be an object of work with emphasis on syncretism. The concepts of racially-mixed ancestry and religion will also be explored. The conclusions reached in this work rather than absolute and conclusive answers to the questions proposed are long, open paths to be covered. The investigation about religious syncretism using Grande Sertão: Veredas as a tool is only possible via metaphor. Additionally the viability of this essay depends on the assumption that the Brazilian population is necessarily mestizo / Este trabalho é uma tentativa de compreensão do sincretismo religioso brasileiro via Grande Sertão: Veredas.

In the gaps left unfilled : historical fantasy and the past

McArthur, Maxine Elisabeth January 2008 (has links)
The thesis consists of the novel The Fox and the Mirror and an accompanying exegesis. The novel is an historical fantasy set in a world based on early medieval (12-13th century) Japan. The main characters are a young female shaman, Hatsu, and a young warrior’s assistant, Sada, who is a Buddhist believer. When Hatsu’s village and shrine are destroyed by warriors and her summoning mirror is stolen, she is abandoned by her kami . To experience the kami’s presence again, she must follow the thief and retrieve the mirror before it can be used to resurrect an ancient evil. Sada must capture Hatsu and bring her back to his lord, or his family will suffer. Yet he is entranced by Hatsu and feels guilt at the destruction of her village. He must choose whether to abandon his former life and stay with Hatsu, or betray her. In the novel I have tried to invoke the feel of a place and time where the supernatural is as real as the physical world; I also try to imagine how a religion as alien to Japanese native beliefs as Buddhism became a part of that country’s spiritual culture. In the exegesis I reflect upon how I used various kinds of history, both written and unwritten, to build the world, characters and narratives of The Fox and the Mirror, and thereby explore some ways in which historical fantasy, as a sub-genre of historical fiction, is capable of presenting an ‘authentic’ view of the past, in spite of its non-realistic nature. I identify three main ways historical fantasy writers can provide an authentic view of the past: by using telling details from an historical era; by incorporating documented events and persons into the story; and by portraying the world as people in the past believed it to be. Historical fantasy is different from realistic historical fiction in that it can more easily incorporate elements belonging to shared cultural heritage, such as beliefs regarding the dead and the supernatural. This characteristic involves writers in research using material that involves other ways of knowing the past—in particular the expressions of belief such as religion, popular customs, folk tales, and oral history. With the broadening of our historiological perspectives in the postmodern climate, historical fantasy based on non-documentary forms of history may come to be seen as another way of knowing the past.

Adultos na fé: os rituais de passagem de católicos e presbiterianos e o posicionamento dos iniciados em relação ao sincretismo religioso / Adulthood in faith: the rituals of passage of catholics and presbyterian and their attitudes toward syncretism

Pedro Henrique Souza Jorge 09 October 2009 (has links)
This Masters thesis compares Catholic and Presbyterian churches identity construction processes and the socialization up each of these churches in order to identify the influence of these factors on Catholic and Presbyterian faithfulls attitudes toward religious syncretism. A person is considered as a member of Catholic church if receives Catholic sacraments. This sacramental identity values more the enchantment aspect of faith over the intellectual, also it plays down the faithfulls intellectual adherence to church dogma. In contrast, in Protestantism a church identity is defined in intellectual terms. To be a member of a church is to confess the doctrine defined as right by this church. In addition, organizational differences of the Catholic and Presbyterian churches seem to affect these distinct identity construction processes. Due to its ability to include in a same huge unity a large diversity of being religious, the Catholic Church can be classified as a igreja de massa (or church for the mass while the Prebyterian church organization can be identified as igreja de quadros (or church for leadership). Smaller, more inflexible toward diversity than Catholic Church, the Presbyterian one indoctrinates their members within the church through Bible Sunday School. In order to understand the sociability and religious education processes in each church, I choose to research two preparatory study groups for similar rites of passage: the ritual of Confirmation, for the Catholic case, and the ritual of Public Profession of Faith, for the Presbyterian. Both can be identified as iniciation rituals because both dramatize the passage of the faithful from Spiritual childhood to Spiritual maturity. Once being adult in faith, both catholics and presbyterians must, acording to their institucional views, repudiate religious syncretism, because one cannot serve two Masters. Would religious syncrestim rejections in fact occur equally in both churches? If not, what differs catholics from presbyterians? These are questions I intend to answer.

Bélanger Sarrazin, Roxanne 14 August 2020 (has links) (PDF)
