A study of relationships between selected factors associated with retirement and measures of dyadic quality

Bogart, Victor 24 October 1984 (has links)
The relationships between life in retirement and the quality of marriage among retirees were examined-- specifically the effects of selected factors associated with retirement on measures of dyadic quality. Two self-administered questionnaires were mailed to each of 522 households of retired Oregon educators and their partners. Households were randomly selected from a list of 1,347 retired educators. Completed questionnaires from 261 couples -- 522 respondents -- provided the data base. The 4-page questionnaire contained 18 items incorporating 38 independent variables. A 10-part variant of Spanier's Dyadic Adjustment Scale (DAS) measured the dependent variable, dyadic quality, and two of its subsets: dyadic cohesion and dyadic satisfaction. The study examined: (1) descriptive data of dyads and individuals; (2) differences in dyadic quality among groups of respondents differentiated by sex and retirement status; (3) differences in dyadic quality among respondents reporting varying levels of retirement satisfaction and life satisfaction; (4) significant correlations between paired independent and dependent variables; (5) percentages of variance in dependent variables accounted for by independent variables. Statistical procedures include One-way Analyses of Variance (fixed model), Spearman Rho Correlation Coefficients, and Stepwise Multiple Regressions. The regression model includes 20 independent variables, each of which correlates with a dependent variable at the .05 level. The descriptive data profile 17 dimensions of typical, somewhat atypical, and very atypical characteristics of this population of retired couples. The findings include: The regression equation of 20 independent variables explained 32% of the variance in dyadic quality. Three independent variables emerged as the strongest predictors of dyadic quality: emotional health; life satisfaction scores, and an active social life. Confirmed hypotheses found significant correlations between dyadic quality and independent variables of physical health, emotional health, health problems, satisfaction with income, and financial problems. Rejected hypotheses predicted significant correlations between dyadic quality and independent variables of household income, gender, age, and years in the marriage. Also rejected were hypotheses predicting significant differences in dyadic quality among groups of retirees and spouses differentiated by retirement status and gender. Some differences in dyadic quality were registered among respondents reporting different levels of satisfaction with retirement and with life but the results were inconclusive and warrant further study. / Graduation date: 1985

Teacher retirement systems: an analysis of change (1969-1984)

Heller, Henry B. January 1986 (has links)
For the past two decades pension funds, and more specifically teacher pension funds, have experienced a rapid growth and an increased importance in the national and regional economies of the United States. The primary purpose of this study was to provide a descriptive examination of the legislative changes in the 50 state teacher retirement systems and the h relationship of these changes with selected state demographic variables over the fifteen-year period of time from July 1, 1969, to June 30, 1984. The research questions that guided this study were: 1) What are the existing characteristics of the 50 states; teachers retirement systems and selected state demographic variables? 2) What are the changes over a 15-year period of time of the 50 states; teacher retirement systems and selected state demographic variables? 3) What are the projected changes in the 50 teacher retirement systems? 4) What are the relationships between the following pairs of variables; a) change in retirement systems and change in state . variables, b) change in state variables and projected change in retirement systems, c) changes in retirement systems and projected changes in retirement systems, d) current retirement systems and projected change in retirement systems, and e) current demographic variables and projected changes in retirement systems? A survey instrument, designed to statistically explore the relationship of selected demographic characteristics with legislative changes in the 50 teacher retirement systems, over the fifteen-year period of time was administered nationally. The population for this study was the 50 state teacher retirement systems. Selected individuals representing systems were surveyed for specific factual information. The rate response from the 50 states was 100%. Statistical methods used to classify and summarize the numerical data were cross-tabulations and frequencies. Pearson r and Spearman Rho correlation statistics were used to determine relationships between pairs of variables. / Ed. D. / incomplete_metadata

The Association Between Selected Health Characteristics and Participation in Learning Projects by Retired Educators

Simmons, Anne Harris 08 1900 (has links)
This study identified the number of learning projects undertaken by thirty-eight retired educators and examined the extent to which these experiences were associated with the body weight and the exercise patterns of the subjects. A list of 1091 names of retired educators was obtained and 400 names were randomly selected to receive a brief survey seeking responses to demographic, personal and miscellaneous questions relating to their efforts to continue to pursue learning. Interviews were arranged with thirty-eight subjects who met established criteria. The 19 8 3 Metropolitan Height and Weight Tables were used to estimate weight characteristics and a probe sheet was designed to identify the number of hours spent exercising in activities vigorous enough to increase heart beat. In-depth interviews were conducted by the investigator using the questions from Tough's Interview Schedule for Studying Some Basic Characteristics of Learning Projects, and the probe sheet designed by the investigator. The interviews focused on the efforts to continue learning during the past twelve months and on the participation in vigorous exercise during the past twelve months. Findings were analyzed by computing t-tests for independent means and the Pearson product moment method of correlation. Comparisons of the results from this study were made with the results from two previous studies, "The Older Adult and Learning," by Roger Hiemstra, ancj "A Comparative Study of Professionally Related Learning Projects of Secondary School Teachers," by N. E. Kelly. The results of this study indicate that much learning is continued past retirement and that all learning is not focused on self; some relate to the needs of the community and of churches. The data supports Hiemstra's premise that health related obstacles diminish learning activity. The Theory that older adults pursue less learning than young adults was not supported by this study.

影響國民中小學退休教師參與學校志工行為意向因素之研究 / Examining factors influencing the behavioral intention of elementary and junior high school retired teacher participating school voluntary service

林語如, Lin, Yu-Ju Unknown Date (has links)
In recent years, the average retirement age of teachers in elementary and junior high school has declined. Many retired teachers are still healthy and warmhearted. If we could encourage retired teachers to serve as school volunteers, not only their lives could be more fulfilled, but also the schools could benefit from their professional specialty and then improve the situation of insufficient human resources. This thesis examines the antecedents of the voluntary behavior of retired teachers in the context of an integrated behavioral model that incorporates a wide variety of important factors from previous researches on volunteer behavior into a single theoretical framework provided by the Theory of Planned Behavior. The model was tested using data from a sample of 219 individual respondents by Structural Equation Model. Moreover, four voluntary teachers and six school administrators were interviewed to thoroughly explore factors affecting the success of the “Voluntary Teaching Program” in Taipei County. Overall, the model results indicate that the strongest effects in voluntary behavior of retired teachers are due to behavioral intention, perceived behavioral control, and subjective norm. The key determinant of perceived behavioral control is self-efficacy, suggesting the more capable a person believes he or she is, the more control the person feels about being a school volunteer. Thus, policymakers should constantly devote efforts at broadcasting the information that serving as school volunteers only need a little time and effort. School administrators simultaneously should allocate voluntary tasks by volunteers’ specialty, interest, and other demands. Moreover, the interviews results suggest that both “the emotions connecting with school and past colleague” and “the sense of being demanded” influence the willingness of retired teachers to serve as school volunteers. Based on the research results, we provide policymakers with specific suggestions on ways to encourage this kind of voluntary behavior. For example, with the design of the Associations of Retired Teachers and regular re-union activities, retired teachers will be emotionally attached to schools. In addition, spread news for asking for retired teachers’ inputs and thank them for their devotion, it will make retired teachers feel needed. About the “Voluntary Teaching Program” policymakers should encourage and reward spiritedly for more voluntary teachers, but reduce the grants, and then utilize this grant budget to give some appropriate welfare resources for voluntary teachers such as labor insurance and some courses for spiritual development. Besides, policymakers should provide a few reward incentives for school administrators to encourage them to invite retired teachers to serve as school volunteers.
