Marriages and families are currently under tremendous pressure. Many marriages and families battle to adapt to changing life circumstances. They have become ignorant about the Divinely intended substance of relationships and are barely surviving. These marriages break up and end up in unhappiness and many times in the breaking up thereof. During the past 40 years there have been many attempts by state and church to stop the deterioration of marriages and family relationships and to put back the essential qualities of life. Many marriage enrichment programmes have been initiated and many couples and families have been encouraged to participate. Social programmes have been discussed and marriage and family initiatives have been launched during these programmes. This has brought hope in many communities. In this confused world of relativism and adaptation people have found some anchor points for their relationships and have found new meaning in their existence. However the question still remains: Do these programs just give a temporary surge of enthusiasm? To move from one program to another and to attend the one course after the other, does not bring a lasting solution. Courses and programs cannot function as crutches from which to get support for wavering marriages and family life. Couples and family members must be equipped in an integral way to revive their marriage and family life. They must be taught to become aware of the richness of happenings and memories that make relationships special and integrate these into their relationships. Rituals (for example: Baptism and Holy Communion) have helped church and humanity through the ages, to look past stale relationships and circumstances, to discover anchors in life and get through traumatic events. These rituals have been the reason for so many unique outcomes in stale relationships and have opened a new future for individuals and groups where none was evident. During this study these rituals have been seen as long–term assistance for marriages and families for the maintenance, extension and dynamics thereof. Rituals with the help of the development line of narrative research methodology, have been put in place to help couples and families to a better understanding and support of each other. They put new life into relationships, to build attainable future dreams and have given the opportunity for partners to move away from stale relationships to more hopeful relationships. The value of the local enrichment program as a safe environment for growth, adaptation and the integral implementation of meaningful rituals in marriage and family life, cannot be stressed enough. Within this enrichment program, with its relevant rituals, relationships are dynamically turned to the future. Believe in the existence of relationship has been found. Energy has been given to couples and families to live more purposefully. They are more creative and have a better understanding of each other. Geloofsvorming in tradisioneel Afrikaans-christelike skole : 'n prakties-teologiese evaluering van die rol van onderwysers, Jeugwerkers en liturgiese elemente teenwoordig in die skoolkonteks

In hierdie studie word aandag gegee aan die invloed wat onderwysers, jeugwerkers en Liturgiese elemente teenwoordig in die skoolkonteks, op die geloofsvorming van kinders in Tradisioneel Afrikaans-Christelike skole uitoefen. Die kerk staan voor krisis wat vir jare reeds aan die kom is. Die kerk is nie meer die middelpunt van die samelewing nie en mense sien nie meer die kerk as noodsaaklike sosiale en geestelike bemiddelaar nie. Dit het tot gevolg dat al hoe minder mense kerk toe gaan met potensieël katastrofiese gevolge. Die kerk kan egter nie op sy louere rus nie, want ons het opdrag om die goeie nuus aan almal te verkondig om sodoende die Koninkryk van God te laat kom in mense se lewens en in die samelewing. Geloofsvorming vind tradisioneel plaas binne die veilige ruimte van die ouerhuis. Die realiteit is dat vele kinders nie meer geloofswaarhede by hul ouers leer nie en ook nie aan voorbeeldige Christelike lewenswyse blootgestel word nie. Om die leemte aan te spreek, behoort die kerk in vennootskap met die skool te staan om kinders bloot te stel aan konteks wat geloofvorming bevorder en fasiliteer. Die skoolkonteks bied geleentheid vir die kerk om kinders in hul vormingsjare te bereik, wat die beste tyd is om lewensveranderende lewenswater aan hulle te bring. Kinders het eksistensiële behoefte daaraan om blootstelling aan geloofsvormende stimuli te ontvang. I suggest that the handling of material can be described in alchemistic terms as a process that is primarily aimed at the transformation of the alchemist him/herself. This view is applicable to jewellers who employ an alchemistic approach to their own practice. I will demonstrate this point by dividing my exploration into three sections, namely transformation of material (which also entails the transformation of value), transformation of meaning, and finally, the ritualistic process of transformation as a transformative element.

The aim of my study was to explore and describe the possible effects of family rituals as an asset during the process through which children give meaning to their experiences. I undertook an empirical study of limited extent. My study was qualitative by nature and conducted from the interpretivist paradigm. I used an instrumental case study as research design and employed educational psychological assessment, semi-structured interviews, informal conversations, reflective journals by the participants and myself, visual data (photographs), observation and field notes as data collection and documentation methods. I selected two Afrikaans-speaking primary school children and their parents from a nuclear family as participants in the study. The findings of my empirical study are supported by relevant literature with regard to the main concepts guiding the study, namely family, ritual, routine and family ritual, asset, meaning giving and children. The main findings were that the five dimensions of family rituals (structure, meaning, persistence and commitment, adaptability and gender relations), as identified in existing literature, were present in the family’s rituals with the possibility of adding other dimensions to these mentioned, such as task completion, communication, roles, affective management, affective involvement and behaviour management. Furthermore I found that the family’s rituals, with some exceptions, positively impacted on the children’s giving of meaning to themselves and the family rituals. Asset-based outcomes were also evident in the meaning the children gave to their experiences following the practicing of family rituals.
