Roma people in French and Swedish newspapers : An analysis of Roma's issue in France

Karimunda, Belyse January 2011 (has links)
The expulsion of Roma people from France during summer of 2010 was one of the most broadcasted events in media around the world. Since the 19th of August, several hundreds of Roma have been forced by the French government to return in Romania and Bulgaria. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate how the issue of Roma in France has been conducted in the French newspaper “Le Monde” and in the Swedish newspaper “Dagens Nyheter” from July 16 to September 19, 2010. This study proposes the use of a quantitative content analysis and the qualitative critical discourse analysis as research methods in order to achieve the objectives of this thesis. Several earlier academic researches confirm that Roma’s discrimination started a long time ago. And this thesis has procured facts that allowed me to make a generalisation about this specific issue around Roma people in France. This thesis concludes that there was not a reporting balance in how the two studied newspapers presented the main actors who were involved in the Roma’s issue since the journalists relied mostly on the official sources. This situation led to a more or less biased coverage of the issue where the voices of French authorities and official sources were overrepresented more than Roma people. Consequently, the Roma minority’s voice was not heard in media even though powerful institutions were involved in the issue by taking their side. Moreover, my study shows that it is difficult to have a balanced media reporting during an ongoing conflict especially between one majority group with power and access to media and another group of minority without power and access to media.

The good, the bad, and the Gypsy : constant positive representation and use of reversed negative stereotypes as ‘sympathy triggers’ in Gypsy cinema

Popan, Elena Roxana 19 March 2014 (has links)
Gypsies or Roma are one of the minorities frequently represented in film, whenever we talk about European or American film; within this context Russian and Eastern European cinema seems to offer the richest palette of portrayals, as in this region Roma represent an important and controversial minority. Film scholars agreed that from the moment when Roma appeared on screen and until the last decades when a shift toward a more realistic approach can be detected, their filmic representations were predominantly stereotypic and highly exoticized. Films from the last decades show more interest in the depiction of poverty, discrimination and marginalization, but stereotypical representation is still present and dominant. The purpose of this paper is to focus on several stereotypes generally perceived as negative stereotypes (theft, drunkenness, vulgar language, falseness, etc.) and to demonstrate that in relation to Gypsy representations on screen, these stereotypes change their function, trying to inculcate upon the viewer sympathetic feelings and accentuating the gap between the Roma cinematic image and the dominant ideology about them in the societies where they live. This thesis will examine negative stereotypes and their function in some of the most representative films of the Gypsy cinema: Skupljaci perja / I Even Met Happy Gypsies (Petrović 1967), Tabor ukhodit v Nebo/ Gypsy Camp Goes to Heaven or Queen of the Gypsies (Loteanu 1976), Ko to tamo peva? / Who’s Singin’ Over There? (Sijan 1980), Dom za vesanje / Time of the Gypsies Gypsies (Kusturica 1988), Gadjo Dillo / The Crazy Stranger (Gatlif 1997), Dallas Pashamende / Dallas among Us (Pejo 2005), and Baklava (Petrov 2007). Special attention will be paid to the relationship between the subjects of representation (Roma), their authors (the directors), and their consumers (the viewers). / text

Architectural practice and the planning of minor palaces in renaissance : italy 1510-1570 / Associate professor of the history of architecture

Pereira, Claudio Calovi January 1998 (has links)
This dissertation proposes to study how the commission and design of minor palaces contribute to the understanding of architectural practice in early 16th century Italy. The particular nature of the small urban palace as a reduced and less expensive version of larger palaces and its recurrent nature in the practice of architects malte this type of building very important in illustrating the changes in the profession at that time. Minor palace commissions also show architects dealing with a growing private market for the exercise of the profession: in Rome, the architect's clients belong to a lesser nobility composed of merchants and professional men (doctors, lawyers, notaries, artists, diplomats, bureaucrats) mostly connected to the Papal civil service. Moreover, the planning of these buildings manifest the increasing specialization of the profession at that time, when expertise in Ancient Roman architecture and the mastering of new instruments of representation (orthogonal projection, perspective, sketches) were added to the usual technical and artistic skills required of an architect. The dissertation focus on how architects define a planning procedure to cope with the new set of circumstances related to the commission of a minor palace (budget, site, program, recurrence). The design of a palace comprised different functions arranged in horizontal sequence with a few vertical connections; therefore, drawings of plans were the central instrument of their design. The dissertation is primarily based on the study of original plans that illustrate the working methods of 16th century Italian architects. Three of them were chosen (Antonio da Sangallo the Younger, Baldassare Peruzzi and Andrea Palladio) based on their activity as designers of minor palaces and the existence of a substantial amount of plans for this kind of building by them. A second part of this work presents a general view of the working procedures employed by these three architects in commissions of minor palaces. Through the study of their drawings and planning procedures, this dissertation intends to illustrate the establishment of the modern sense of architectural practice in 16th century Italy as shown through the design of minor palaces.

Assessment of knowledge, attitudes and utilisation of HIV post-exposure prophylaxis among adults, Roma, Lesotho

Lebona, Maselobe Anna 11 1900 (has links)
As the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) prevalence rises, uninfected Basotho face an increased risk of exposure. This necessitates strengthening of strategies that prevent exposure, and where exposure has occurred, measures that prevent infection. One such measure is Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP). Awareness and knowledge of HIV PEP is therefore of paramount importance. The purpose of this study was to assess knowledge, attitudes and utilisation of HIV PEP among adults in Roma, Lesotho. A quantitative cross-sectional study was conducted among 96 adult outpatients at St Joseph’s Hospital. Data were collected by means of structured questionnaire and analysed using SPSS version 23.0. Results were presented using charts and tables. Awareness of HIV PEP among the respondents was found to be very low and for most respondents’ knowledge of HIV PEP was either non-existent or very poor. Utilisation was also found to be very low. Attitudes towards HIV PEP were, however, found to be favourable. More studies should be conducted throughout the country to further explore Basotho’s knowledge, attitude and use of HIV PEP. / Health Studies / M.A. (Nursing Science)

Ethnicity Revisited: the Case of Higher Educated Younger Generation Roma in Contemporary Central and Eastern Europe

Remete, Anamaria January 2013 (has links)
Anamaria Remete TEMA EMMC 2nd year Ethnicity Revisited: the Case of Higher Educated Younger Generation Roma in Contemporary Central and Eastern Europe Abstract This research aims to explore the self perception of ethnicity of younger generation Roma in Central and Eastern Europe. The sample population is represented by two groups of higher educated Roma. First those who were beneficiaries of the university scholarships granted by the Open Society Institute's Roma Initiatives. Second those who are working in Roma-focused NGO advocacy organizations. The organisations are: the Open Society Institute-Budapest, European Roma Rights Centre also in Budapest, the European Roma Information Office in Brussels and the European Roma and Travellers Forum by the Council of Europe in Strasbourg . This strategy of the Open Society Institute and the above mentioned NGOs has only a short history, which will be discussed further in the study. The self perception dimension is going to be analyzed through the application of the concept of "everyday ethnicity" as developed by scholars Rogers Brubaker, Paloma Gay y Blasco and Carol Silverman in order to gain insight into the dynamics of the factors that come into play in the process of creating meaning for young and higher-educated Roma in countries from Central and Eastern...

SILVA, C. F. P. 14 April 2014 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2016-08-29T14:12:10Z (GMT).
