Linear Algebra for Array Signal Processing on a Massively Parallel Dataflow ArchitectureSavaş, Süleyman January 2009 (has links)

This thesis provides the deliberations about the implementation of Gentleman-Kung systolic array for QR decomposition using Givens Rotations within the context of radar signal processing. The systolic array of Givens Rotations is implemented and analysed using a massively parallel processor array (MPPA), Ambric Am2045. The tools that are dedicated to the MPPA are tested in terms of engineering efficiency. aDesigner, which is built on eclipse environment, is used for programming, simulating and performance analysing. aDesigner has been produced for Ambric chip family. 2 parallel matrix multiplications have been implemented to get familiar with the architecture and tools. Moreover different sized systolic arrays are implemented and compared with each other. For programming, ajava and astruct languages are provided. However floating point numbers are not supported by the provided languages. Thus fixed point arithmetic is used in systolic array implementation of Givens Rotations. Stable

and precise numerical results are obtained as outputs of the algorithms. However the analysis results are not reliable because of the performance analysis tools.

Development of the Design of Eccentrically Braced Frames with Replaceable Shear LinksMansour, Nabil 23 February 2011 (has links)
In current design of steel eccentrically braced frames (EBFs), the yielding link is coupled with the floor beam. This often results in oversized link elements, which leads to over-designed structures and foundations. In addition, the beams are expected to sustain significant damage through repeated inelastic deformations under design level earthquakes, and thus the structure may require extensive repair or need to be replaced. These drawbacks can be mitigated by designing EBFs with replaceable
shear links. Two different replaceable link types with alternate section profiles, connection configurations, welding details and intermediate stiffener spacing were tested. A total of 13 cyclic quasi-static full-scale cyclic tests were performed, which included tests on eccentrically braced
frames with the replaceable shear links, to study their inelastic seismic performance. The links exhibited a very good ductile behaviour, developing stable and repeatable yielding. Additional inelastic rotation capacity can be achieved with bolted replaceable links when allowing bolt bearing
deformations to occur. The on-site replaceability of the link sections is confirmed even in the presence of residual deformations of 0.5% drift.

The aim of this study was to investigate possible applications of the modified Givens rotations on the solution of linear systems that typically arise in animal breeding problems. Two applications were considered: prediction of breeding values based on phenotypes and relationships, using mixed model methods; and prediction of breeding values based on molecular information, using genotypes from high density SNP chips. In the first application, the use of a reduced animal model, combined with a specific ordering of the system, made it possible to apply a multi-frontal decomposition approach. The frontal matrices were defined as the parts of the upper triangular corresponding to each herd. In this way, the problem could be partitioned into n subproblems, where n is the number of herds. A set of programs was developed in order to factorize the data matrix of each herd independently, and then combine the information from all of them while solving the overall triangular system, by back-substitution. The conclusion was that Givens rotations can be used as a numerical method for updating predicted breeding values under a reduced animal model, if dam effects are nested within herds. In the second application, the modified Givens rotations were compared to the Conjugate Gradient method for solving linear systems that arise in the estimation of SNP effects on breeding values. Givens rotations required less processing time but a greater amount of high speed memory. The conclusion was that, given the increasing rate of advance in computer power, Givens rotations can be regarded as a feasible numerical method which presents the advantage that it allows for the calculation of standard errors of estimates.

Bending moments in the support of slabs made by precast joist with lattice reinforcement.Fábio Lopes Magalhães 19 April 2001 (has links)
This work deal with an usual type of slab in Brazil: slabs made by precast joist with lattice reinforcement. The goal of this work is the structural analysis of bending moments in the supports of slabs made by this kind of precast element. Theoretical and experimental models analyze this type of slab. In the theoretical analysis, the non-linear concrete behavior is done by moment x curvature relationship of Model Code CEB-90 add incremental load technique. The theoretical model is compared with experimental results of continuous strip slabs designed with different degrees of bending moment redistribution. In these analysis had been noted: a) the theoretical model presents good results compared with the experimental results, b) the slabs present good plastic rotation capacity, c) with high negative reinforcement ratio in the support does not happen moment redistribution, d) the displacement is practically independent of negative reinforcement ratio and e) the ultimate load is practically independent of redistribution degree idealized in the design.

Ensino de isometrias na educação básica: uma aplicação didática em sala de aula / Teaching isometrics in basic education: a didactic application in the classroomDebora Costa Cona 18 May 2017 (has links)
In this dissertation we present a sequence of non-traditional activities, focusing on the teaching and learning of Geometry, in particular regarding the Isometrics in the Plan, elaborated for elementary school students, and the result of its application to eight classes of 9th grade , As a way to develop students\' reasoning skills. We used for this experiment the Design Experiment, a teaching experiment based on continuous improvement, and Van Hiele\'s theory based on Adela Jaime-Pastor\'s (1993) doctoral thesis, with a series of activities elaborated and applied by the teacher/researcher involving the translations and the reflections, through the phases of learning and levels of reasoning that the students develop with the application of this theory. This experiment was divided in two moments, application with four classes of 9th grade in 2015 and application with four other groups of 9th grade in 2016, subdivided into two other situations, activities on translations and activities on reflections. The data of this experiment were obtained through the productions of the students, who worked in doubles, in the classroom, recorded through photos, videos and audios recorded by the researcher herself. We also used the paper dolls of Brigitte Servatius (1997), with which we worked on translations and reflections. The students participating in the experiment finalized it with solid notions of the characteristics of the isometries and a visible progress in their level of knowledge. The way the activities were carried out brought reflexes to the routine of these students in the classroom, making it evident that the search for situations that arouse the students\' interest in an innovative way can generate better results and the motivation of continuous learning.

Magnetic fabric, palaeomagnetic and structural investigation of the accretion of lower oceanic crust using ophiolitic analoguesMeyer, Matthew Charles January 2016 (has links)
This thesis presents the results of a combined magnetic fabric and palaeomagnetic analysis of lower crustal rocks exposed in the Oman (Semail) ophiolite. This has long been an important natural laboratory for understanding the construction of oceanic crust at fast spreading axes and its subsequent tectonic evolution, but magnetic investigations in the ophiolite have been limited. Analyses presented here involve using: (i) magnetic anisotropies as a proxy for magmatic petrofabrics in lower crustal rocks in order to contribute to outstanding questions regarding the mode of accretion of fast-spread oceanic crust; and (ii) classical palaeomagnetic analyses to determine the nature of magnetization in these rocks and gain further insights into the regional-scale pattern of tectonic rotations that have affected the ophiolite. The extensive layered gabbro sequences exposed in the Semail ophiolite have been sampled at a number of key localities. These are shown to have AMS fabrics that are layer-parallel but also have a regional-scale consistency of the orientation of maximum anisotropy axes. This consistency across sites separated by up to 100 km indicates large-scale controls on fabric development and may be due to consistent magmatic flow associated with the spreading system or the influence of plate-scale motions on deformation of crystal mushes emplaced in the lower crust. Detailed analysis of fabrics in a single layer and across the sampled sections are consistent with either magmatic flow during emplacement of a melt layer into a lower crustal sill complex, or traction/drag of such layers in response to regional-scale stresses (e.g. mantle drag). Together, results support formation of the layered gabbros by injection of melt into sill complexes in the lower crust. New anisotropy data from the overlying foliated gabbros sampled at two key localities also provide insights into the style of melt migration at this crustal level. Fabrics are consistent with either focused or anastomosing magmatic upwards flow through this layer, reflecting melt migration beneath a fossil axial melt lens. Previous palaeomagnetic research in lavas of the northern ophiolitic blocks has demonstrated substantial clockwise intraoceanic tectonic rotations. Palaeomagnetic data from lower crustal sequences in the southern blocks, however, have been more equivocal due to complications arising from remagnetization. Systematic sampling resolves for the first time a pattern of remagnetized lowermost gabbros and retention of earlier magnetizations by uppermost gabbros and the overlying dyke-rooting zone. Results are supported by a positive fold test that shows that remagnetization of lower gabbros occurred prior to Campanian structural disruption of the Moho. NW-directed remagnetized remanences in the lower units are consistent with those used previously to infer lack of significant rotation of the southern blocks. In contrast, E/ENE-directed remanences in the uppermost gabbros imply a large, clockwise rotation of the southern blocks, of a sense and magnitude consistent with that inferred from extrusive sections in the northern blocks. Hence, without the control provided by systematic crustal sampling, the potential for different remanence directions being acquired at different times may lead to erroneous tectonic interpretation.

Buckwheat as a Cover Crop in Florida: Mycorrhizal Status, Soil Analysis, and Economic AssessmentBoglaienko, Daria 01 July 2013 (has links)
This thesis analyses buckwheat as a cover crop in Florida. The study was designed to demonstrate: soil enrichment with nutrients, mycorrhizal arbuscular fungi interactions, growth in different soil types, temperature limitations in Florida, and economic benefits for farmers. Buckwheat was planted at the FIU organic garden (Miami, FL) in early November and harvested in middle December. After incorporation of buckwheat residues, soil analyses indicated the ability of buckwheat to enrich soil with major nutrients, in particular, phosphorus. Symbiosis with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi increased inorganic phosphorus uptake and plant growth. Regression analysis on aboveground buckwheat biomass weight and soil characteristics showed that high soil pH was the major limiting factor that affected buckwheat growth. Spatial analysis illustrated that buckwheat could be planted in South Florida throughout the year but might not be planted in North and Central Florida in winter. An economic assessment proved buckwheat to be a profitable cover crop.

The report includes analysis of 15 different situations in Ice-hockey. The situations are hard tackles from different matches and leagues. The analyzed tackles did Not resulted to concussion, but similar situations can be concussions. The goal of the project includes creating a control group for the studies of concussions in ice-hockey. Previous or parallel studies have been down to situations that result to concussions. The report indicates short to head and neck anatomy that is scalp, brain and skull. The concept of concussion with its symptoms explained in this report. The selected video sequences were analyzed head kinematics and collision sequences between the head and the other part that may be another person's shoulder, head, arm or ice or glass wall. When the video sequences were analyzed attempted to controll the head speed, head acceleration and the tackles angle. The results should agree with previous works.
