Fingidores em cena: a metaficção em Sérgio SantAnna e Rubens Figueiredo / Liars on stage: metafiction in the works of Sérgio Sant'Anna and Rubens Figueiredo

Marcelo de Souza Pereira 27 March 2013 (has links)
This thesis proposes the idea of amplifying the concept of metafiction and aims at investigating the functions of metafictional discourse in the works of two authors in contemporary Brazilian literature: Sérgio SantAnna and Rubens Figueiredo. Regarding Sérgio SantAnna, we investigate the relationship between metafiction and the following issues: the control of imagination; the aesthetic reflection explored inside fictional texts; and the debate concerning the avant-garde. As for Rubens Figueiredo, the discussion about the usage of metafictional discourse takes into account the three cycles which the writers work goes through. These cycles are singled out by the emphasis put upon issues like the following: the parady of detective stories, the problem of identity and last but not least the problem of social issues. The panoramic view of the works of both writers intends to throw light on how the different metafictional usages − as they attribute different values to the relationship that literature establishes with the so-called real world − signpost two almost antagonistic conceptions of the literary phenomenon

This research aims at analyzing bibliophily based upon the memories of Rubens Borba de Moraes and José Mindlin, thus pinpointing the importance of both theorists towards written memory preservation by the formation of rare book collection libraries, especially “Brasiliana” collection. The perspective of making the developed repository available to the public throughout the years present a new proposal of redefining bibliophily as informational heritage, thus idealizing an utilitarian sense to the collection with the USP Brasiliana creation, in opposition to the current practices of fragmentation and misuse of collections. As for the methodology, bibliographic materials were used due to the descriptive aspect of the research. Subjects concerning the history of the book, typography, collectionism, rare books, reading habits and collection digitalization were explained through. The bibliophile biografies helped in the formation path contextualization of rare book libraries. Informational theory corollaries towards selection and acquisition of bibliographic materials, collection formation and development, organization, availability, information recovery and organizational memory preservation so as to provide a crossroad between Information Science and bibliophily.

Habitat Associations Between the Northern Flying Squirrel and Red Spruce

Ashley L Archer (9191999) 31 July 2020 (has links)

Red spruce forests, one of the most critically endangered ecosystems in the United States
provides critical habitat for several endemic species or subspecies of the Appalachian Mountains, including the Virginia northern flying squirrel. Once listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act, the Virginia northern flying squirrel was delisted in 2013. Managers are currently focusing their efforts on projects that increase the extent and connectivity of the squirrel’s habitat through red spruce restoration. At present, there is a paucity of available data to assess the implications of the silvicultural activities associated with red spruce restoration on the movement and occupancy of the Virginia northern flying squirrel. In order to inform management activities, I measured home range, fine-scale habitat use, and estimated detection and occupancy for northern flying squirrels across a gradient of red spruce stands in the Monongahela National Forest. I concluded that home ranges for northern flying squirrels within this region are comprised primarily of red spruce and that northern flying squirrels were selecting larger diameter trees compared to the nearest available neighbor. Additionally, I found that microhabitat characteristics alone did not sufficiently predict northern flying squirrel occupancy and that acoustic methods for surveying northern flying squirrels will require further refinement. Future research efforts should focus on a combination of landscape-level and microhabitat covariates to best predict occupancy of this species across the landscape. Future red spruce management should be approached with caution regarding the potential impact on northern flying squirrel habitat in the short-term. I recommended using spatially-explicit modeling to assess the long-term effects of proposed red spruce restoration projects on northern flying squirrel population demographics, dispersal, and metapopulation connectivity prior to the implementation of silvicultural treatments.

Modeling Stem Taper of Southern Appalachian Red Spruce

Morrone, Steven 24 May 2023 (has links)
Red spruce (Picea rubens Sarg.) is a commercially and ecologically important conifer species that primarily exists at northern latitudes of eastern North America. During the last glaciation, its range extended down the Appalachian Mountain chain into North Carolina and Tennessee. Since the planet warmed over the subsequent millennia, only small, sky-island populations remain at the highest peaks of the southern Appalachians where their habitat continues to be threatened by a warming climate. While they have been recognized for the rare wildlife habitat they provide in the region, these populations remain understudied. This thesis aimed to provide additional quantitative methods for managing red spruce stands through regionally fitted stem taper equations and to examine differences in stem form between the northern and southern populations of red spruce. In Chapter 1, five stem taper equations were evaluated for their ability to predict upper stem diameters and total volume in southern Appalachian red spruce: a simple linear, a quadratic polynomial, a segmented, a variable exponent, and a geometric model. Based on past studies and our results, we found that the best equations to use were the variable exponent and segmented polynomial models. Users should consider their own objectives and practical limitations in choosing which equation to use. In Chapter 2, we examined differences in stem form using three methods: a sectional rate of change in diameter, a sectional form class ratio, and a region variable added to two taper equations. The results were mixed, with the rates of change showing significant differences (p<0.05), but the form class ratios showing a mix of significant and insignificant differences. The two equations also had contrasting significance results. This made it unclear whether there were significant differences in stem form between the two populations but supported the idea that localized taper equations would provide the best results. / Master of Science / Red spruce (Picea rubens Sarg.) is a conifer native to eastern North America. It primarily exists in cold, moist climates found in the northeastern US and eastern Canada. Additionally, remnant populations of red spruce exist along the highest peaks of the Appalachian Mountains southward into North Carolina and Tennessee. These trees have been separated from northern red spruce populations for thousands of years and subjected to different growing conditions at high elevations that may have affected their stem characteristics. Stem taper is the rate at which the diameter of a tree's stem changes from the ground to the tip. Many equations have been developed to estimate diameters throughout the stem using simple measurements like total height and diameter at breast height (1.37 m or 4.5 ft). These equations can be used to estimate diameters, heights, and volumes of trees which is helpful for valuing trees for wood production, carbon accounting, or wildlife habitat. Stem taper can vary among species and within a species, so tailoring equations to local populations is important for obtaining the most accurate estimates. Currently, there are no known taper equations fitted specifically for these red spruce trees in the southern Appalachians. This thesis aimed to develop stem taper equations specific to this population of trees and to analyze whether the stem forms of southern red spruce trees differed from their northern counterparts. The results showed that there is evidence both for and against the hypothesis that these populations have different stem forms, and further research is necessary to confirm differences. We also showed that a variable exponent equation and a segmented polynomial equation provided the most accurate estimates of diameter and volume for the southern spruce populations.

This sentence was given after 40 years of investigations into the crime against the parliamentarian. With different purposes and in different contexts, four state agencies performed investigations about the crime: the inquiry of the Army (1971), the investigation of the Federal Police (1986) then transformed into a Military Police Inquiry and conducted by the Army (1987), the survey made by the National Truth Commission and the Rio Truth Commission (2012-2014) and the investigation of the Federal Public Ministry (2012-2014). In addition, this research incorporated to analyze some specific periods of the Paiva family fight, as the request for investigation made by Eunice Paiva in the Council of the Human Rights (CDDPH) in 1971 and then in 1979. This reflection of the Rubens Paiva case procedures allowed to find representations of the paradoxes with which victims of human rights violations were addressed in different contexts since the military regime, exemplifying the cycles of this struggle.

Forest Change and Balsam Woolly Adelgig Infestation in High Elevation Forests of Mt. Mitchell, North Carolina.

Lusk, Laura 01 December 2009 (has links)
The Black Mountain range of western North Carolina supports some of the most extensive, but threatened high elevation forests in the southern Appalachians. Of particular note, the insect pathogen, balsam woolly adelgid (Adelges piceae Ratzeburg) has been present on Mt. Mitchell for over fifty years. In anticipation of potential changes in forest composition, vegetation surveys were first conducted in 1966 on nine one-acre plots near the summit of Mt. Mitchell. These plots were re-surveyed in 1978, 1985 and 2002. The purpose of this study was to re-census those plots and use those data to analyze long-term trends in forest composition for fir, spruce-fir, and spruce-fir-hardwood forest types. Since the 1960s and 1970s, all three forest types have experienced a transition away from an understory with a preponderance of Fraser fir (Abies fraseri (Pursh) Poir.) seedlings and saplings, to forests with higher densities of canopy and sub-canopy fir. Canopy red spruce (Picea rubens Sarg.) has similarly increased in density in the fir and spruce-fir types but declined in the spruce-fir-hardwood forest type. In all types, there has been a sharp decline in hardwood seedlings/saplings since a hardwood seedling explosion in 1978. The current analyses indicate that fir and spruce-fir forests have regenerated since the most severe die-offs and that each forest type will experience future impacts from balsam woolly adelgid but these will occur in a non-synchronous pattern.

The Grass Seed Pathogen Pyrenophora semeniperda as a Biocontrol Agent for Annual Brome Grasses

Stewart, Thomas E. 05 July 2009 (has links)
Bromus tectorum and other annual brome grasses have invaded many ecosystems of the western United States, and because of an annual-grass influenced alteration of the natural fire cycle on arid western range lands near monocultures are created and conditions in which the native vegetation cannot compete are established. Each year thousands of hectares become near monocultures of annual brome grasses. Pyrenophora semeniperda, a generalist seed pathogen of annual grasses, shows major potential as a possible mycoherbicide that could help in reducing the monocultures created by annual grasses. The purpose of this research was to identify the requirements for isolating cultures of P. semeniperda, search for a hypervirulent strain, and evaluate its effect in the field. The techniques for isolating the fungus have evolved and become more efficient. The first two years of working with P. semeniperda resulted in 11 isolates. During the third year of this study, we developed a single spore isolation technique that resulted in 480 additional isolates. Virulence screening resulted in detection of a range of isolate ability to kill non-dormant B. tectorum seeds. Ninety-two isolates represented a range of virulence from 0-44%. The variation in virulence was expressed mostly within populations rather than between populations. Similarly, virulence varied significantly within Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS) genotypes and habitats but not between them. When conidial inoculum was applied in the field there was no observed difference in disease incidence between different levels of inoculum. This is thought to have been due to applying the inoculum under conditions in which most in situ seeds were infected and killed by already high field inoculum loads. While additional field trials are needed to optimize the inoculum effectiveness, the overall results of this research provide a good foundation for using P. semeniperda as a biological control for seed banks of annual brome grasses.

Albuquerque, Fernanda Carvalho de January 2015 (has links)
This research investigates context-oriented artistic practices – the context taken in its institutional and political aspects mostly – and its critical articulation in the realm of an art institution. The idea is to enquire the limits and the possibilities of such practices, when comissioned by art museums, promoting a critical reflexion towards the institution they respond to. Can these practices bring any changes to the institution or at least articulate reflexions that might give rise to questionings able of provoking transformations? In orther to do that, the research undertakes a literature review on context-oriented artistic practices from the 1960’s until nowadays, putting in relationship the recent assimilation os such practices by curatorial programs with the so called return of institutional critique during the last decade. Therefore, the research seeks two study cases: one regarding contemplação suspensa (2008), an artwork developed by Rubens Mano to the Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo, and the other about Shibboleth (2007), an art project conceived by Doris Salcedo to the Tate Modern, London. The analysis points to the possibility of a critical articulation that manifests itself mainly during the art process that happens in proximity – and in constant negotiation – with the institution.

The objective of the present study was to investigate different mathematics teaching practices in a Municipal Agricultural School (MAS) located in Rio Claro, São Paulo. We identified significant periods in the school´s existence based on interviews with subjects who shared memories of their experiences in the school since it was established, in 1986, until 2006. Using oral history methodology, we portray an historical version of the school, providing evidence of different processes of subjectification. The MAS was not always an elementary and middle school. It began as a “project” for street kids supported by the National Foundation for the Well-being of Children. This federal governmental institution provided funding for the school with the objective of getting children off the streets and occupying them in agricultural activities during the periods they were not in school. However, as policies changed and the contract between the government and the school ended, it was developed into the MAS, with grades six through nine and a traditional curriculum, but which offered technical agricultural classes, as well. At that time, it was opened to the public and to those interested in its unique emphasis on agriculture. More due to its geographic location and its privileged space than to any particular value attributed to farmers, it constituted a new school community that, to this day, is undergoing changes that compromise its initial identity, resulting from changes in administration. We provide a retrospective of this scenario, of this school which still subsists in an adverse context, specifically investigating the mathematics teaching practices. We observe their influences in the school context, as well as reflections resulting from its past, remembering and re-composing the history of the MAS and the different discourses of truth...
