The impact of surf tourism on the community of Tofino

Jefferies, Mervyn 20 November 2018 (has links)
This dissertation explores the emergence of surf tourism as a significant aspect of rural communities. It uses an inductive qualitative approach focused on Tofino, British Columbia, Canada as an example to provide an in-depth exploration of a rural community effected by this phenomenon. Qualitative interviews were conducted with a snowball sample of key informants to address the following research objectives: (1) What factors have influenced the evolution of surf tourism in Tofino; (2) How might the evolution of surf tourism in this case study relate to the Tourism Area Life Cycle (TALC); (3) What is the impact of surf tourism on the broader community development of Tofino? Analysis of the Tofino data elicited following themes: (1) For some, surfing is a desirable lifestyle, reflecting in some ways the concepts of specialization, serious leisure, and community’s identity; (2) Surf shops are a community hub for local surfers and surf tourists; (3) Pacific Rim National Park plays a critical role in the region, contributing to surfing and the surf tourism industry, but has yet to fully engage with surfers or the surfing industry; (4) New and more affordable equipment technology has brought increased access to cold-water surf and surf tourism, reducing what may have constrained the early development of surf tourism; (5) Considerable increases in the supply and demand for surfing in Tofino have occurred, tempered by the increased number of surfing competitions and other new tourism segments that exist in the community; (6) Increasing safety issues may undermine the growth of surf tourism; (7) Limits to surf tourism growth are evident regarding facility and physical carrying capacity; (8) As a result of the considerable growth of surfing in Tofino, recreational crowding, and conflict are in evidence, as are coping mechanisms; (9) ‘Localism’ exists in Tofino, but perhaps less so than in other destinations which have a fixed beach break; (10) Surf tourism has the potential for positive and negative impacts on First Nations communities in the region; and (11) Local government plays an important role. These themes were then analyzed and linked to the following theoretical concepts: serious leisure; specialization; leisure constraints; localism; violence; conflict; crowding, carrying capacity, amenity migration, the Tourism Area Life Cycle (TALC); and, rural tourism. This led to some intriguing findings. For example, unlike most other popular surf tourism destinations, crowding is not so apparent in the surf because the surf breaks in the Tofino area are primarily beach breaks that constantly shift as the bathymetry of the ocean floor changes with tides and currents, resulting in constant wave changes. This contrasts with fixed break conditions found elsewhere, so in Tofino it is easier to avoid other surfers by simply moving to another part of the wave. When the Tofino findings were compared with TALC, some similarities and differences were noted. Factors that appear to be consistent with the TALC model are: increasing numbers of tourists, changing type of tourists (e.g. more mass tourists, compared to the early days of surf tourism), increasing numbers of tourism facilities, increased levels of marketing, increased levels of interaction between visitors and local communities (perhaps leading to instances of conflict, and localism), and increased economic benefits to the community. However, one possible departure from the expected trajectory is impacts on the natural environment, which have increased in some ways, but are improved in other ways. There has been some environmental change in terms of the growth in the town of Tofino, and with the development of lodgings near to the surrounding beaches. However, much of the larger landscape, remains largely intact or less impacted than what might have occurred without the presence of Pacific Rim National Park, and the Clayoquot Biosphere Reserve. Further, the TALC model suggests that the development of tourism will lead to lesser local control of development. The Tofino findings suggest that there remains a great deal of local control and that local government support the tourism industry, including surf tourism. It was noted that the emerging surf tourism refers to several concepts found in the general nature tourism literature, such as crowding, conflict and carrying capacity, but the surf tourism literature tends to overlook the complexity of some of these concepts. For example, future surf tourism research might consider more explicit examination of the various dimensions of conflict described in this study, including in group and outgroup conflict, interpersonal conflict and social values conflict. There is little evidence of the incorporation of these concepts in the surf tourism literature. Finally, the data exposed a high level of social capital within the surf community and also between surfers and non-surfers as a facet of a close-knit rural community dependent to a degree on surf tourism as a social driver manifesting in mutual cooperation, trust and reciprocity occurring in social institutions such as surf-shops. / Graduate

TURISMO E OS MEIOS DE COMUNICAÇÃO: A DIVULGAÇÃO DO TURISMO RURAL DO MUNICÍPIO DE SÃO JOSÉ DOS AUSENTES/RS / TOURISM AND MIDIA: THE MARKETING OF RURAL TOURISM IN SÃO JOSÉ DOS AUSENTES/RS

Jappe, Fernanda Miron 29 April 2005 (has links)
Two factors contribute decisively for the development of rural tourism. On one hand, the stressing way of living in big urban centers and, on the other hand, the economically depressing state of rural areas. Rural tourism permits the interaction of man with nature for the benefit of urban dweller and creates a new source of income for the farmer. In this dissertation, we look into the role of media in rural tourism development. The research was conducted in the county of São José dos Ausentes, located in the southeast of Rio Grande do Sul. To collect the relevant data we went through the written material and records available at the municipality and also made inquiries with tourists, farmers and the secretary of tourism of São José dos Ausentes. The data reveal that all media are important and that together they contribute to sell the image of a place. However, the decision to visit any given locality depends on the information passed by relatives and friends. In sum, the role of media is to inform the potential clients about the touristic attractions of a place. To sustain that information for longer periods adequate marketing techniques are required. The way visitors are received will be decisive for the continuity of the flow of tourists and their increase over the time.

Amaral, Gisele Ferreira January 2007 (has links)

Valentini, Andiara de Souza 31 October 2014 (has links)
Submitted by Ana Guimarães Pereira (agpereir@ucs.br) on 2015-03-06T16:52:09Z No. of bitstreams: 1 Dissertacao Andiara de Souza Valentini.pdf: 2549018 bytes, checksum: 910860e6bbd19fcdebf802abe95abc24 (MD5) / Made available in DSpace on 2015-03-06T16:52:09Z (GMT). As a parallel activity, tourism in rural areas has been helping rural families in increasing their income and diversifying their activities. Starting from this premise, we conducted a comparative study of tourism in the rural regional development councils (COREDEs) of Campos de Cima da Serra and Fronteira Oeste, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The survey was divided into two stages. The first was exploratory, assessing the number of active farms which received tourists. On the second stage, all these properties were visited for the application of a questionnaire with open and closed questions. Data were collected in 20 rural properties in December 2013 and January 2014. Te aim of this study was to identify and compare the potential of rural properties to the development of tourism in rural space as a cost-effective alternative, differentiate the farms practising agritourism from those practicing rural tourism in both regions, and establish the profile of the generation of employment and income in primary and tertiary sectors. Among the findings, it was identified that 95% of the owners started the tourist activity to increase family incomes. Agritourism is the most practiced in both regions, with 55 of the properties. Tourism-generated jobs are mostly temporary jobs.

Roteirização turística no espaço rural : estudo longitudinal da rota colonial Baumschneis - Dois Irmãos, Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil

Scherer, Lisiane 27 June 2014 (has links)
Submitted by Ana Guimarães Pereira (agpereir@ucs.br) on 2015-04-16T16:36:57Z No. of bitstreams: 1 Dissertacao Lisiane Scherer.pdf: 12546733 bytes, checksum: a621c75ec58b1c63aff46f4d71425d45 (MD5) / Made available in DSpace on 2015-04-16T16:36:57Z (GMT). Starting this context, this research is directed to the area of tourism in rural space and routing, though a longitudinal study of Colonial Route Baumschneis, with the aim of analyzing the construction and development of this route, in his fourteen years in operation, and seeking to discover the factors that contributed to the current situation on the route. To do so, aspects of the creation, organization and development of the route, which featured the attractions that have made and have still part of the itinerary, listing its tourist potential and motivation and his retention in tourism were identified, as well as reporting the factors that led to the current stage of the Route. The methodology that guided the research process was characterized by a case study with a qualitative and quantitative approach, developed through a survey of exploratory- descriptive. The Colonial Route Baumschneis, located in the municipality of Dois Irmãos, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, was created in 1998 and implemented in 2000, aiming to provide economic-social alternatives for the community, turning the potential found in rural as tourist attractions, praising German culture in this city, a result of the process of colonization. The route has seven kilometers, covering currently fifteen tourist attractions, categorized into natural and cultural. The results show that the Colonial Route Baumschneis was created by incentive of the Local Government, and at the design stage, there was the effective participation of the owners and the local community. During the fourteen years there were some inflows of new attractions, however, also other shutdown occurred. It was observed that the factors that led the route to the current situation is linked to the lack of interest of the families to continue the family activity, duplication of products and/or attractions in some cases, reducing the profitability of these, and especially the lack of economic return, disclosure, and management aspects that have generated frustration, accommodation and demobilization. However, at the same time it became clear that the route provided an improvement in self-esteem of the owners of tourist developments , which today feel valued by their customs and Germanic traditions, as well as portion of the participants has improved prospects routes and are optimistic about the increased tourist flow.

Klein, Angela Luciane January 2012 (has links)
Pedagogical rural tourism is characterized as a set of educational activities carried out within the farm as a teaching resource that uses the agricultural and cattle breeding activities, as well as the natural resources found there. This is a new socioeconomic alternative, that under the multifunctional agriculture, can promote both rural producers as it generate additional income, appreciation of their knowledge and practical skills, it allows the students a different kind of learning and experiences that happen in direct contact with different elements of nature. This research, however, had its main purpose describing and analyzing activities that distinguish pedagogical rural tourism, focusing on it as an educative practice developed in regular school. Two experiments carried out in southern Brazil are analyzed: Caminhos Rurais de Porto Alegre (RS) and educational tourism project Viva Ciranda in Joinville (SC). We have used bibliographic research, analysis of proposed activities and semistructured interviews accomplished with 11 rural owners who offer educational activities in their properties and 22 teachers, responsible for the class of students that visited these properties among September and November 2011. The results of this research show that are developed activities on these enterprises, in spite of showing their particularization (physical structure, resources, strategies and intention), regard similar features like: these experiences allow students to have direct contact with rural environment, helping the comprehension on issues as water resources, food origin, flora, fauna and sustainable production. These aspects can be used in different knowledge areas, inside interdisciplinary perspectives, with the indispensable presence of a teacher. The pedagogic rural tourism in this approach helps the rural development and plays an important role in education.
