Santos, Davi Siqueira. January 2015 (has links)
However his last contribution is a book of memories in two volumes named Solo de clarineta. We could consider it as an imperfect end because his death, that was not the author's desire, is responsible for interrupting the active of the writer. Faced with this situation, aiming to develop a propositional theory, we subdivided our approach in three parts. The first gathers the "family album" and the "travel album", trying to make an overflight that gets together some recordation of Érico about his life in the company of people and places. The second part focuses on the library of the author, with his readings of formations, his readings of confirmations and his own contributions in the bookcase of Brazilian literature. The third and last part tries to establish a comparison between the memory written and the fictional written. For this, using the mirror's metaphor, this thesis will try to approach things that are apart, that are separated by a reflective glass film, which we can call art speech. Through this division in three parts, the thesis tries to do a movement of tying the memorialist in the novelist. This way, our discussion sustain the argument that, in the end of his career, Veríssimo wanted to be transformed in a character of himself, trying with this to get the immortality, by literature, condition that his biological constitution couldn't provide / Doutor

Silêncio, sensações e segredos : o narrador e a personagem feminina no romance O lustre (1946), de Clarice Lispector /

Santos Júnior, Moisés Gonçalves. January 2015 (has links)
The study analyze mainly the development of the narrator and the main character Virginia, as the most expressive categories in the novel, as well as categories of disruption. The research has also the purpose of highlighting the avant-garde and modern aesthetics, especially of Impressionism, which reverberate in Lispector's writing this book. The whole investigation has the purpose of establishing O lustre as a work of great aesthetic and literary quality, demystifying the critical position which defends the little relevance of the book. In fact, in this book Lispector was able to transgress radically Brazilian prose in the 20th century / Mestre

The Effect of Shifting Cases from District Courts to Administrative Proceedings at the Securities and Exchange Commission

Grobecker, Reeve 01 January 2019 (has links)
Using a set of 4708 observations, we analyze the impact of Dodd-Frank on shifting cases from federal courts to administrative courts. Overall, we find that there is a higher probability of a case being an administrative proceeding post Dodd-Frank. In addition, we find a higher average total payment for administrative proceedings post Dodd-Frank, and a lower average total payment for federal court cases post Dodd-Frank. We also find a higher average disgorgement payment for administrative proceedings post Dodd-Frank. While this finding could be the result of the SEC shifting more complex and thus higher paying cases from federal courts to its own, we find that the SEC is not shifting cases strictly away from federal courts that have the highest average payments. Higher average disgorgement payments are simply the result of the SEC litigating more cases with higher average payments in general. Lastly, we find a higher probability of settling for administrative proceedings overall. However, settlement rates for administrative proceedings decrease post Dodd-Frank. This finding reflects an overall decrease in the SEC’s “home court” advantage and undermines the argument that the SEC is shifting weaker cases to its own courts.

U.S. GAAP Convergence to IFRS and the Risk Implications Involved in Convergence

Salzman, Benjamin J. 01 January 2011 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to examine in depth the process of U.S. GAAP convergence to IFRS. The thesis begins by providing the history of convergence, which include all the measures that have led to the FASB’s and IASB efforts today. Some specific accounting issues that the FASB and IASB are working on in their joint projects to eliminate the differences are explored. The issues that the FASB and IASB need to cover in order to complete their efforts laid out in the Memorandum of Understanding, and even possibly adopting IFRS, are covered next. The risk implications if the United States were to adopt IFRS as it stands today are examined. There are numerous short-term risks if the U.S. adopts IFRS immediately, many of which include increased expenses for companies and more room for managerial manipulation of earnings. After disclosing the short-term risks, the long-term benefits of adopting IFRS, which include decreased costs from consolidation and increased comparability for users of financial statements, are highlighted. The thesis then covers the opinions submitted to the SEC about convergence or endorsement of IFRS. The conclusion includes interviews of three Deloitte professionals on their opinions of convergence, and my views based on my research.

Julio Morán, Gemma 05 July 2006 (has links)
To evaluate the changes on the corneal epithelium asociated with a evaporative dry eye model.METHODS. Thirty-tree eyes of 17 New Zealand white rabbits were held open with an eye specula for differents periods of time (12 minutes - 3 hours and 15 minutes). Corneal damage was evaluated by scanning electron microscopy and the digital images were processed for morphometric information with free software program Image J. Finally the data were analyzed statistically with SPSS for Windows.RESULTS. There was significantly changes on epithelium from more than 1 hour without blinking compared with the undessicated eyes. The main features of damage were loss of microvilli density (mean ± sd on the control corneal surface was 48.35 ± 7.25 opposite 34.12 ± 16.74 after more than 1 hour) (p<0.01) and break of intercellular junctions (mean ± sd on the control corneal surface was 0.94 ± 0.11 opposite 0.78 ± 0.3 after more than 1 hour) (p<0.01). Moreover the cells underwent a small but significant (p<0.01) increase in their area and circularity and the cells electron reflex showed a slight but significant (p<0.01) tendency to get darker.By means of logistic regression we were able to predict the degrees of the corneal damage process and we found that the loss of microvilli was earlier than break of intercellular junctions.CONCLUSIONS. The morphometric and statistical analysis of the gradual damage that this dry eye model cause in the corneal epithelium has allowed us to establish an objective and useful method for comparing commercially available artifical tear preparations.

DI-SEC: Distributed Security Framework for Heterogeneous Wireless Sensor Networks

Valero, Marco 16 April 2012 (has links)
Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are deployed for monitoring in a range of critical domains (e.g., health care, military, critical infrastructure). Accordingly, these WSNs should be resilient to attacks. The current approach to defending against malicious threats is to develop and deploy a specific defense mechanism for a specific attack. However, the problem with this traditional approach to defending sensor networks is that the solution for one attack (i.e., Jamming attack) does not defend against other attacks (e.g., Sybil and Selective Forwarding). This work addresses the challenges with the traditional approach to securing sensor networks and presents a comprehensive framework, Di-Sec, that can defend against all known and forthcoming attacks. At the heart of Di-Sec lies the monitoring core (M-Core), which is an extensible and lightweight layer that gathers information and statistics relevant for creating defense modules. Along with Di-Sec, a new user-friendly domain-specific language was developed, the M-Core Control Language (MCL). Using the MCL, a user can implement new defense mechanisms without the overhead of learning the details of the underlying software architecture (i.e., TinyOS, Di-Sec). Hence, the MCL expedites the development of sensor defense mechanisms by significantly simplifying the coding process for developers. The Di-Sec framework has been implemented and tested on real sensors to evaluate its feasibility and performance. Our evaluation shows that Di-Sec is feasible on today’s resource-limited sensors and has a nominal overhead. Furthermore, we illustrate the functionality of Di-Sec by implementing four detection and defense mechanisms for attacks at various layers of the communication stack.

Credit rating agencies and conflicts of interest

Crumley, Diana G. 21 August 2012 (has links)
Credit rating agencies are controversial yet influential financial gatekeepers. Many have attributed the recent failures of credit rating agencies to conflicts of interest, such as the agencies’ issuer-pays business model and the agencies’ provision of ancillary services. This report identifies these conflicts; examines recently-finalized Security and Exchange Commission (SEC) regulations proscribing these conflicts; and suggests other possible regulatory measures. The strategies available to regulators are diverse and differ widely in their political and administrative feasibility. These strategies include outright prohibition of conflicts; removing regulatory references to credit ratings; enhancing agency liability; organizational firewalls; performance disclosures; demonstrating due diligence and its results; increasing competition; staleness reforms; internal governance; administrative registration; and requiring alternative business models. While the report primarily focuses on how the most recent financial crisis—and the related market for asset-backed securities—highlighted conflicts of interest at credit rating agencies, this report also examines how credit ratings—and their limitations—affect sovereign debt markets. / text

Moreira, Caio Ricardo Bona January 2011 (has links)
This work aims to develop an interpretation of the symbolist poetry survival in the contemporary poetry, having as basis the poet Dario Vellozo. We intend to read his poetry putting it in relation, taking it out from the province, and showing that the literary performance of Dario in the belle époque of Curitiba it is not so distant from the movements such as the pataphysics and acephalics. The gestures of Dario, feeding a mystic symbolist poetry, building the Muse Temple (#Templo das Musas#) and creating pagan festivities in which he dressed up like a Greek and marched with his followers through the city, are not provincial acts, since these acts are marked by the reading of French symbolists and decadents and by the outbreak of mysticism that invaded Europe in the nineteenth century. From the correlation of times and texts of late nineteenth century, earlier twentieth century with contemporary poems, as well as the reading of scholars such as Walter Benjamin, Aby Warburg and Didi-Huberman, I intend to investigate how poets like Paulo Leminski, Ricardo Corona, among others, develop a clever dialog with the symbolism, reviving it, and extracting from it a strength capable of leverage its own creation.

January 2007 (has links)
Abstract: The corpus of the dissertation is comprised of poetries of João Guimarães Rosa, assigned with pseudonyms, published in the hybrid book Ave, Palavra. Such compositions remain unexplored by the literary criticism, underestimated by the magisterial language of his narratives. It is aim of this work to analyze the referred poetry, standing out its esthetic quality and recognizing them not just as an accident amid the outputs in prose but as significant and integrated part in the writer's work. Beginning from the conception of "poetry of convergency" showed by Octavio Paz, we verify the presence of analogical poems - characterized by the searching of self-knowledge and represented by the myth of Narcissus - and compositions which focus is the literary doing. In the great extent of the compositions, an analogical view emerges accompanied of meta-poetics aspects, showing the correlation established by Guimarães Rosa between linguistic and human renewal. As theoretical abasement we used studies about poetic language and poetry conception, such as from Roman Jakobson, T. S. Eliot, Jean Cohen, Todorov and Octavio Paz. The Hugoþs Friedrich book , A Estrutura da Lírica Moderna, support us in the analyses of poems as well as studies about artistic outputs of João Guimarães Rosa, specially, those from Heloisa Vilhena de Araujo, Paulo Jorge Haranaka, Maria Célia Leonel, Eduardo Faria Coutinho, Manuel Cavalcanti Proença, among others. / Mestre
