Géométrie et cinématique de l’avant-pays provençal : modélisation par coupes équilibrées dans une zone à tectonique polyphasée / Geometry and kinematic of the Provence foreland : Modeling by balanced cross section in a polyphase tectonic area

L’architecture structurale et l’évolution du bassin d’avant-pays Pyrénéo-Alpin de Provence sont contrôlées par des failles profondes héritées du rifting de Gondwana au cours du Permo-Trias, par des variations d’épaisseur de la pile sédimentaire mésozoïque et par l'alternance d’évènements tectoniques compressifs et extensifs qui ont affecté la zone depuis la fin du Paléozoïque. La construction de deux coupes équilibrées d’échelle régionale (~150 km) montre que le style tectonique de l’avant-pays provençal est dominé par une tectonique de socle en Provence orientale et par une tectonique de couverture en Provence occidentale, associé avec du diapirisme dans les deux domaines. Les deux domaines sont couplés à l’échelle crustale et séparés par une zone d'accommodation dans la couverture: la Faille de la Moyenne Durance, dont la partie profonde est héritée du Paléozoïque. La structure actuelle de l’avant-pays Pyrénéo-Alpin de Provence correspond essentiellement à la signature de la compression Pyrénéo-Provençale Crétacé supérieur-Eocène (>90%). La part de la déformation Alpine est minime (9%). La phase d'extension Oligocène entre ces deux périodes compressives a été quantifiée à 1.7%. Les données de traces de fission sur apatite suggèrent une exhumation régionale à ~80 Ma reliée à la compression Pyrénéenne. Les chevauchements pyrénéens principaux ont joué simultanément, comme l’indiquent l’âge et la répartition des séries sédimentaires syntectoniques. / The structural architecture and evolution of the Pyrenean-Alpine foreland of Provence are controlled by deep-seated basement faults inherited from Gondwana rifting during Permo-Triassic time, by variations in the Mesozoic sedimentary pile thickness and by alternating compressive and extensive tectonic events that affected the area since the late Paleozoic. The construction of two balanced cross sections at regional scale (~150 km) shows that the structural style of the Provence foreland is dominated by thick-skinned tectonic in eastern Provence and thin-skinned tectonic in western Provence, associated with diapirism in each domain. Both domains are coupled at crustal scale and separated by an accommodation zone in the cover: the Middle Durance Fault, whose deep-seated part is inherited from the Paleozoic. The current structure of the Pyrenean-Alpine foreland of Provence mainly corresponds to the Pyrenean-Provence compression signature during Late Cretaceous to Eocene (>90%). The Alpine deformation proportion is minor (9%). The Oligocene extension phase between these two compressive periods has been quantified at 1.7%. The apatite fission track data suggests an exhumation stage around 80 Ma related to the Pyrenean compression. The main Pyrenean thrusts were synchronous, as indicated by the age and distribution of syntectonic sedimentary series.

Contributions à la prévision court-terme, multi-échelle et multi-variée, par apprentissage statistique du trafic routier / Contributions to the short-term, multi-variate and multi-scale prediction of traffic states based on machine learning methods

La maturité de la télématique et des technologies de l’information et la communication (TIC), ainsi que l’avènement du big data dans le transport ont conduit à des développements foisonnants dans le domaine des systèmes de transports intelligents (ITS), aussi bien sur le plan des technologies de recueil que du traitement innovant de l’information. Il est désormais possible de connaître les conditions de circulation et les états de trafic sur la plupart des sections d’un réseau routier sans avoir recours à des infrastructures intrusives de collecte de données, de transmettre l’information résultante via des réseaux sans fil et de traiter rapidement toutes ces données multi-sources disponibles. La constitution de grandes bases de données a naturellement fait évoluer la pratique de gestion du trafic et plus particulièrement les méthodes de prévision. Ces méthodes ont connu un renouveau en s’inspirant des travaux produits en apprentissage statistique. Néanmoins, la façon d’appréhender le problème de la prévision est restée à une échelle locale. Pour chaque section de route, un modèle de prévision est adapté et optimisé. Notre travail de thèse présente un cadre de prévision du trafic routier qui aborde la question à l’échelle du réseau. L’étude menée au sein de ces travaux de thèse vise à exposer et évaluer cette nouvelle approche, dite globale, au regard d’approches usuelles, puis à analyser sa sensibilité vis-à-vis de divers facteurs. Après un positionnement par rapport à l’état de l’art en théorie du trafic, le cadre prédictif fondé sur des méthodes de prévision multi-variées par apprentissage est détaillé. Une version multidimensionnelle des k plus proches voisins, modèle parcimonieux et simple, est évaluée sur divers cas d’études. L’originalité réside dans l’exploitation de données issues de méthodes innovantes de collecte (e.g. Bluetooth, véhicules traceurs, véhicules connectés). Par la suite, les performances de l’approche initiale sont comparées à d’autres méthodes d’apprentissage. Un effort particulier est porté sur l’adaptation de méthodes à noyaux au cadre prédictif global. Les performances obtenues laissent entrevoir une typologie des méthodes en fonction des caractéristiques spatiotemporelles du réseau. Afin d’améliorer les performances en prévision et de réduire les temps de calcul, une méthode d’identification et de sélection des sections critiques du réseau est proposée. Les résultats prouvent qu’un sous-ensemble restreint de sections est en effet suffisant pour garantir des performances satisfaisantes en généralisation. Enfin, la résilience du cadre prédictif est évaluée au regard des événements non récurrents affectant le fonctionnement nominal du réseau, comme des incidents ou des conditions météorologiques dégradées. Les résultats soulignent l’impact de ces conditions non récurrentes sur la prévision temps-réel de la dynamique court-terme d’un réseau et permettent de dresser une feuille de route pour l’élaboration d’un cadre prédictif résilient et opérationnel. Cette nouvelle vision de la prévision s’inscrit dans les perspectives actuelles en termes d’applications sur les modules embarqués et les objectifs des gestionnaires d’infrastructures. / The maturity of information and communication technologies and the advent of Big Data have led to substantial developments in intelligent transportation systems (ITS) : from data collection to innovative processing solutions. Knowledge of current traffic states is available over most of the network range without the use of intrusive infrastructure-side collection devices, instead relying on wireless transmission of multi-source data. The increasing use of huge databases had a strong influence on traffic management, including forecasting methods. These approaches followed the recent trend towards innovative works on statistical learning. However, the prediction problem remains mainly focused on the local scale. The prediction for each road link relies on a dedicated, optimized and adapted prediction model. Our work introduces a traffic-forecasting framework able to tackle network scale problems. The study conducted in this thesis aims to present and evaluate this new “global” approach, in comparison to most-used existing works, and then to analyze its sensitivity to several factors. The traffic-forecasting framework, based on multi-variate learning methods, is detailed after a review of the literature on traffic flow theory. A multi-dimensional version of the k nearest-neighbors, a simple and sparse model, is evaluated through several use cases. The originality of the work stands on the processing approach, applied to data collected through new measurement process (e.g. Bluetooth, floating car data, connected vehicles). Then, the performance of our primary approach is compared to other learning-based methods. We propose an adaptation of kernel-based methods for the global prediction framework. The obtained results show that global approaches perform as well as usual approaches. The spatial and temporal specificities of the methods are highlighted according to the prediction accuracy. To improve the forecasting accuracy and reduce the computation time, we propose an identification and selection method targeting critical links. The results demonstrate that the use of a restricted subset of links is sufficient to ensure acceptable performances during validation tests. Finally, the prediction framework resilience is evaluated with respect to non-recurrent events as incidents or adverse weather conditions affecting the nominal network operations. The results highlight the impact of these non-recurrent conditions on real-time forecasting of short-term network dynamics. This enables the design of a further operational and resilient prediction framework. This perspective of forecasting matches the current applications relying on embedded systems and addressing the traffic network supervisor’s expectations.

Vetting sources in social media environments: strategies emplyed by journalists of The Palm Beach Post

This qualitative research study explores the relationship between reducing uncertainty and assigning source credibility in the context of social media sites (SMS) and examines the effect of uncertainty reduction within the social media environment on the development of relationships between journalists and their sources. For this study, interviews were conducted with professional journalists to determine whether uncertainty was reduced and credibility was established with sources via SMS (i.e., Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn) and what theoretical strategies journalists used to reduce their uncertainty. The study also aims to determine if correlations exist between a reporter's age, beat, and/or personal adoption of SMS and the reporter's usage of SMS for source development. The interviews were conducted with 15 journalists of The Palm Beach Post (West Palm Beach, Florida), using a standardized interview protocol. Subjects were asked to voluntarily participate in a face-to-face interview with the researcher. Reporters were selected based upon their gender and cultural ethnicity, which was representative of the newsroom demographics of The Palm Beach Post at that time. This research aims to contribute to the uncertainty reduction theory in the realm of computer-mediated communications, specifically with regard to the use of SMS in forming and maintaining journalist-source relationships. / by Michelle D. The relevance of analyzing such a short period is justified for its peculiarities: accentuated fall of the inflation, maintenance of the valued fixed exchange rate, expressive increase of the tributary load and high interests rates, results of the implantation of a new economic plan, Plano Real, as well as, of the turbulences brought by the crises in Mexico in 1995, in Asia in 1997 and Russia in 1998. The analysis is made starting from picked data of the Balance Sheet of the biggest companies of Brazil, published by the Exame As Melhores e Maiores revue. The data are contained by economic sections and they show strong differences among them. The general tendency is of debt growth, with significant fall in 1996. The obtained results don't allow the establishment of clear relationships of this growth with the main macroeconomics variable. It is not also possible to obtain of there evidences that are indicated the increase of the debt elapsed of larger needs of working capital for increase of the production or of financial embrittlement of the companies / Esta dissertação analisa a evolução do grau de endividamento das maiores empresas do Brasil nos anos de 1995 a 1998. A relevância de analisar um período tão curto se justifica por suas peculiaridades: queda acentuada da inflação, manutenção do câmbio fixo valorizado, aumento expressivo da carga tributária e taxas de juros elevadas, resultados da implantação de um novo plano econômico, o Plano Real, bem como, das turbulências trazidas pelas crises no México em 1995, na Ásia em 1997 e na Rússia em 1998. A análise é feita a partir de dados colhidos dos Balanços Patrimoniais das maiores empresas do Brasil, publicados pela Revista Exame As Melhores e Maiores. Os dados estão agrupados por setores econômicos e mostram fortes diferenças entre eles. A tendência geral é de crescimento do endividamento, com queda significativa em 1996. Os resultados obtidos não permitem o estabelecimento de relações claras deste crescimento com as principais variáveis macroeconômicas. Também não é possível obter daí evidências que indiquem se o aumento do endividamento decorreu de necessidades maiores de capital de giro para aumento da produção ou de fragilização financeira das empresas

The corpus is composed by four cartoons published by Folha de São Paulo newspaper relating the period from January 2016 to September 2016, regarding Dilma Rousseff´s impeachment. We believe that cartoons provide rewarding experiences with issues related to language and humour as a social phenomenon which expresses an opinion leader character. The theoretical principles are based on humour concepts presented and discussed in the studies of Bergson (1993), Propp (1992), Travaglia(1990), as well as in the Discourse Analyses in media context from Charaudeau`s perspective (2005, 2006, 2009, 2014, 2015). Firstly, we proceed to present the corpus and historical aspects which involve the selected cartoons. We resumed the history, trying to understand how humour was explained by scholars and theoreticians chosen for this study. We managed to identify the linguistic elements of humour in cartoons and the effects of understanding of such cartoons. Finally, after corpus analyses, we realized that humour not only criticizes, but also derides those who distance from social standards / O presente trabalho tem como objetivo analisar a construção linguístico-discursiva do humor nas charges de Angeli. O corpus é composto por quatro charges, publicadas no jornal Folha de S. Paulo, referente ao período de janeiro de 2016 a setembro de 2016, a respeito do impeachment de Dilma Rousseff. Acreditamos que os textos humorísticos possibilitam gratificantes experiências com as questões da língua e do humor como um fenômeno social que exprime um caráter formador de opinião. A fundamentação teórica baseia-se em conceitos de humor apresentados e discutidos nos estudos de Bergson (1993), Propp (1992), Travaglia (1990), bem como na Análise do Discurso em contexto midiático sob a perspectiva de Charaudeau (2005, 2006, 2009, 2014, 2015). Primeiramente, procedemos à apresentação do corpus e dos aspectos históricos que abarcam as charges selecionadas. Realizamos uma retomada histórica, procurando conhecer como o humor foi explicado pelos pensadores e teóricos, escolhidos para esta pesquisa. Analisamos os mecanismos linguístico-discursivos do humor nas charges e os efeitos de sentido. Finalmente, após a análise do corpus, percebemos que o humor pode não só criticar, como também pode ridicularizar aqueles que se distanciam das normas sociais

Mais precisamente, consideramos uma função Hamiltoniana $H: \\mathbb{R}^4 \\to \\mathbb{R}$ que possui um ponto de equilíbrio do tipo sela-centro $p_c \\in H^{-1}(0)$ e assumimos que $p_c$ pertence a um conjunto singular estritamente convexo $S_0 \\subset H^{-1}(0)$. Então, mostramos que os níveis de energia $H^{-1}(E)$, com $E>0$ suficientemente pequeno, contêm uma $3$-bola fechada $S_E$ próxima a $S_0$ que admite um sistema de seções transversais $F_E$, chamado folheação $2-3$. $F_E$ é uma folheação singular de $S_E$ com conjunto singular formado por duas órbitas periódicas $P_{2,E}\\subset \\partial S_E$ e $P_{3,E}\\subset S_E\\setminus \\partial S_E$. A órbita $P_{2,E}$ é hiperbólica dentro do nível de energia $H^{-1}(E)$, pertence à variedade central do sela-centro $p_c$, tem índice de Conley-Zehnder $2$ e é o limite assintótico de dois planos rígidos de $F_E$ que, unidos com $P_{2,E}$, constituem a $2$-esfera $\\partial S_E$. A órbita $P_{3,E}$ tem índice de Conley-Zehnder $3$ e é o limite assintótico de uma família a um parâmetro de planos de $F_E$ contida em $S_E\\setminus \\partial S_E$. Analyses expérimentale et numérique du comportement de poutres à ouvertures d'âmes raidies / Experimental and numerical analyses of the behaviour of beams with stiffened web openings

La présente thèse vise à caractériser le comportement mécanique à la ruine de poutres métalliques avec ouvertures, de formes et de tailles variables, renforcées ou non par raidisseurs. L’étude s’intéresse à des poutres de dimensions réalistes et s’appuie sur une combinaison de différentes approches : essais, modèles éléments finis et modèles analytiques. Les raidisseurs sont généralement utilisés pour corriger certaines faiblesses au niveau du comportement mécanique autour des ouvertures. Autour des ouvertures rectangulaires, ces raidisseurs, disposés verticalement ou horizontalement, ont fait l’objet de peu d’études scientifiques publiées. Généralement, le comportement des poutres à ouvertures d’âmes est considéré comme étant similaire à celui d’une poutre échelle (ou poutre Vierendeel) chargée aux noeuds. Cette hypothèse permet de considérer que les membrures de l’ouverture sont soumises à un moment fléchissant local bi-triangulaire sur la longueur de l’ouverture. Cependant, la distribution du moment fléchissant, et de ses contraintes axiales, le long d’une membrure peut s’avérer être plus complexe et dépend de la forme de l’ouverture (rectangulaire, hexagonale, circulaire, sinusoïdale ou quelconque), de la position de l’ouverture le long de la poutre et enfin, du type de chargement (concentré ou uniformément réparti). Plusieurs études numériques et expérimentales ont déjà été menées sur les poutres à ouvertures d’âmes et ont permis de développer différentes approches analytiques en vue de décrire leurs comportements. Cependant, ces modèles montrent certaines imprécisions ou insuffisances pour différents types et dimensions d’ouvertures notamment les ouvertures rectangulaires. Les travaux présentés dans cette thèse font le point sur les principaux modèles existants de calcul de résistance des poutres avec ouvertures d’âmes. Ils présentent notamment leurs avantages et limites. Pour conforter les descriptions basées sur les analyses bibliographiques, une campagne expérimentale est réalisée pour valider un modèle éléments finis développé dans le cadre de l’étude. Les essais s’appuient sur des tronçons de poutres de dimensions réalistes avec différentes configurations d’ouvertures isolées renforcées ou non par des raidisseurs. Les mesures autour de l’ouverture utilisent des jauges de déformation pour analyser le profil des contraintes et son évolution, au cours du chargement, dans différentes sections critiques. Les essais sont menés jusqu’à la ruine qui s’est développée généralement par une combinaison de comportement élasto-plastique et d’instabilité locale autour des ouvertures. Certaines ruines se sont produites par rupture en traction-cisaillement de l’acier dans des zones critiques. Les analyses numériques et expérimentales ont permis d’étudier l’influence de différentes conditions sur la distribution des contraintes, notamment axiales, au sein d’une membrure d’ouverture, en vue d’évaluer son potentiel de voilement local qui reste un phénomène complexe à appréhender. Elles ont permis aussi de comprendre le fonctionnement mécanique des ouvertures renforcées par des raidisseurs de différentes dimensions et positions. L’étude paramétrique menée, en utilisant le modèle éléments finis validé par essai, a permis d’évaluer la pertinence des hypothèses retenues dans les approches analytiques existantes. Ces analyses ont permis aussi de proposer un modèle analytique tenant compte du comportement d’ouvertures isolées avec ou sans raidisseurs. / The present thesis aims to characterize the mechanical behavior to failure of steel beams with openings, with variable shapes and sizes, reinforced or not by stiffeners. The study considers beams of realistic dimensions and combines different approaches: tests, finite element models and analytical models. The stiffeners are generally used to improve some weaknesses in the mechanical behavior around the openings. Around rectangular openings, these stiffeners, in vertical or horizontal arrangements, have been the subject of limited number of scientific publications. In general, the behavior of beams with web openings is considered similar to that of Vierendeel beams with loads applied at the nodes. This hypothesis allows to consider that each frame around the opening is characterized by a bi-triangular local bending moment along the frame elements. In fact, the bending moment distribution, and their resultant axial stresses, along a frame can be more complex and depends on the shape of the opening (rectangular, hexagonal, circular, sinusoidal or any), the position of the opening along the beam and finally, the type of loading (concentrated or uniformly distributed). Several numerical and experimental studies have been conducted on the beams with web openings and different analytical approaches have been developed to describe and predict the behavior of these beams. However, these models show some inaccuracies or inadequacies depending on the types and dimensions of openings including rectangular openings. The work presented in this thesis examines the main existing models predicting the resistance for beams with web openings. It shows their advantages and limits based on the existing but limited results. To obtain additional and specific results to be used in the comparisons and to validate a finite element model developed within the framework of the study, an experimental campaign is carried out. The tests are focused on beams of real dimensions with different configurations of isolated openings reinforced or not by stiffeners. The measurements around the opening use strain gauges to analyze the stress profile and its evolution, during loading, in different critical sections. The tests are carried out until failure generally characterized by a combination of elastic-plastic behavior and local instability around openings. Some final failures occurred by tensile-shear fracture of steel in some critical zones. Numerical and experimental analyzes are performed to study the influence of various conditions on the stresses distributions, in particular axial stresses, within the frames around the openings. The stress distribution is mainly observed to evaluate the local buckling potential that remains a complex phenomenon difficult to predict. The results are also analyzed to understand the mechanical behavior of the openings reinforced by stiffeners of different dimensions and positions. The parametric study conducted using the validated finite element model allows evaluating the relevance of the assumptions considered in the existing analytical approaches. These analyzes made it possible to propose an analytical model taking into-account the behavior of isolated openings with or without stiffeners.

De la phénoménologie à la microscopie, une nouvelle approche pour l’évaluation des sections efficaces de fission / Challenging fission cross section simulation with long standing macro-microscopic model of nucleus potential energy surface

Les travaux présentés visent à améliorer les modèles de physique nucléaireutilisés dans l’évaluation des sections efficaces neutroniques de fission. Le résultat deces travaux donne les clefs pour une percée significative dans ce domaine et a permisd’étendre fortement les capacités du code d’évaluation CONRAD. Les sections partiellesétant naturellement corrélées entre-elles pour respecter la valeur de la section totale, cesaméliorations bénéficient à l’ensemble des sections partielles. Un cadre solide pour lamodélisation des processus concurrent à la fission a dû être établi sur le modèle du codede référence TALYS. Après s’être assuré de la fiabilité et de la cohérence du cadre, lesinvestigations spécifiques concernant la fission ont pu être réalisées. Les perspectivesd’applications offertes par les modèles macro-microscopiques FRDM et FRLDM ont étéanalysées. Ces modèles ont été implémentés et validés sur des données expérimentaleset des benchmarks. Afin d’obtenir des temps de calcul compatibles avec les besoins del’évaluation, des méthodes numériques sophistiquées ont été sélectionnées et une partiedes calculs a été portée sur GPU. Ces modèles macro-microscopiques peuvent être utiliséspour construire des surfaces d’énergie potentielle qui sont à leur tour traitées afin d’obtenirdes barrières de fission à une dimension, puis des coefficients de transmission fission. Cesderniers sont alors utilisés dans le cadre de modélisation des sections efficaces moyennesdu domaine statistique sur la base d’un modèle Hauser-Feshbach. Les résultats de cetteapproche seront présentés sur le cas du 239Pu(n,f). / The work presented here aims to improve models used in the fission crosssectionevaluation. The results give insights for a significant breakthrough in this fieldand yielded large extensions of the evaluation code CONRAD. Partial cross sections areinherently strongly correlated together as of the competition of the related reactions mustyield the total cross section. Therefore improving fission cross section benefits to all partialcross sections. A sound framework for the simulation of competitive reactions hadto be settled in order to further investigate on the fission reaction; this was implementedusing the TALYS reference code as guideline. After ensuring consistency and consistencyof the framework, focus was made on fission. Perspective resulting from the useof macroscopic-microscopic models such as the FRDM and FRLDM were analyzed; thesemodels have been implemented and validated on experimental data and benchmarks. Tocomply with evaluation requirements in terms of computation time, several specific numericalmethods have been used and parts of the program were written to run on GPU.These macroscopic-microscopic models yield potential energy surfaces that can be used toextract a one-dimensional fission barrier. This latter can then be used to obtained fissiontransmission coefficients that can be used in a Hauser-Feshbach model. This method hasbeen finally tested for the calculation of the average fission cross section for 239Pu(n,f).

Le projet vise à développer une nouvelle approche méthodologique dans le but d'améliorer l'utilisation combinée de plusieurs techniques de microscopies infrarouge et X lors de l'analyse de fragments de peintures. Historiquement et ordinairement, les fragments de peintures sont préparés en coupes épaisses polies et les analyses sont réalisées à la surface de ces dernières. Bien que cette préparation d'échantillon facilite sa manipulation ainsi que son orientation lors des analyses, elle limite aussi l'efficacité et la faisabilité de certaines techniques de microscopie. Par conséquent, ce travail propose d'explorer une nouvelle stratégie analytique : la préparation et l'analyse de coupes fines. Ces deux étapes ont été optimisées et validées dans le cadre d'analyses par µFTIR, µXRD, µXRF et µXANES. En parallèle, de nouvelles possibilités analytiques ont été testées dans le cadre de l'analyse des peintures, basées sur la technique XANES plein champ. Les échantillons de peintures se sont révélés être d'excellents candidats pour évaluer les avantages et inconvénients de cette technique pour les matériaux du Patrimoine Culturel en général. / This project aims at developing a new methodological approach, providing a more efficient and synergetic use of FTIR and X-ray microscopies, for the analysis of painting fragments. Usually, painting fragments are prepared as polished sections and analyses are carried out on the cross-section surface. This sample preparation is easy to handle, however ends into critical constraints regarding feasibility and efficiency of micro-analyses. We propose to explore a different strategy: preparation and analysis of thin sections. These preparation procedures were first optimized and validated with µFTIR, µXRF, µXRD and µXANES. Besides, new methodological capabilities based on full-field/µXANES were assessed. Paintings were ideal candidates for estimating pros and cons of this new strategy for CH materials in general.
