The experiences of adult learners in distance education of SMS technology as a learning support tool

The purpose of my study was to explain how adult learners in distance education experienced short message service (SMS) technology as a learning support tool. The study focused on a single unit of analysis, namely a SMS for academic purposes that was implemented in the final module, Practical Experience, of the Advanced Certificate in Education: Special Needs Education. This course is one of three in-service teacher training programmes offered by the Unit for Distance Education at the University of Pretoria (UP). The theoretical framework and literature review were operationalised by the development of a questionnaire. A record of the text message response schedules, and telephonic interviews comprised the other two data collection instruments. These data were integrated to provide an explanation of how learners experienced SMS technology as a learning support tool. Participants who were able to utilise and access the SMS said that it seemed to: motivate them, help them focus on their work and set goals. They could check on their progress and found the creation of flexible learning environments an additional benefit. Interactive learning environments that enabled them to construct new knowledge by actively engaging in the learning process benefited the participants. Constructivist principles of teaching and learning are inherent in this. The SMS did not seem to facilitate the development of interactive learning environments characterised by two-way communication channels for all the participants, as it also establishes one-way communication channels focused on delivering course content. Although participants indicated that this was helpful in giving them more information, they also expressed a need for more contact with their lecturers and with other learners for learning support purposes. Barriers to communication included faulty cellular phones, the cost of the SMS, and the lateness of text messages in relation to the due dates for assignments and projects. An overriding barrier was the difficulty participants seemed to have in understanding the instructions in the text messages. Klusteranalys av språkgenrer

Målet med denna uppsats är att dela och undersöka 31 språkgenrer med hjälp av en klusteranalys. Hypotesen är att modernare genrer sprungna ur den senaste digitala utvecklingen är mer lika talspråk trots att de är skrivna. Av detta kommer resultaten från genrerna SMS, Supersynkron chatt och Chattforum att lyftas fram i studien. För att besvara frågeställningen används fem hierarkiska metoder Average-, Complete- och Single-Linkage, Centroid, Ward´s och en icke-hierarkisk metod. Uppsatsen tar avstamp i tidigare forskning från Biber (1988), Jonsson (2013) och Berber (2014) där även datamaterial för alla genrerna förutom SMS hämtas ifrån. Resultaten från de olika metoderna skiljer sig något åt varvid Single-Linkage inte bedöms vara relevant för studien. Inledningsvis stämmer den uppsatta hypotesen. Vid en djupare analys visar det sig att de tre genrerna inte bara är väldigt olika de 28 andra genrerna utan även skiljer sig åt sinsemellan. För att förklara varför behövs en viss lingvistisk förståelse och till det används både tidigare forskningsresultat och bakgrundsfakta om genrerna. Skillnaderna kan bl.a. troligtvis förklaras av att personerna som för konversationerna har olika slags relationer till varandra och att chattarna respektive SMS används för olika ändamål.

Automatická identifikace šablony generující spam kampaně / Automatic Template Pattern Recognition

Spam se typicky nevyskytuje ve formě samostatných zpráv, ale často bývá sdružován do takzvaných kampaní. Ty bývají automaticky generovány pomocí šablon. Díky tomu jsou jednotlivé zprávy sémanticky, ale ne syntakticky, ekvivalentní. Cílem práce je navrhnout algoritmus schopný z množiny zpráv jedné kampaně zpětně extrahovat šablonu, ze které tyto zprávy byly generovány. Práce se zaměřuje na spam v SMS komunikaci, ale navržené postupy jsou dostatečně obecné pro širší použití. Algoritmus je postaven na metodě zarovnávání dvou sekvencí, používané v bioinformatice pro nalezení podobných oblastí proteinových řetězců. Výstupem je regulární výraz popisující šablonu dané kampaně. Součástí řešení je také nástroj pro vizualizaci šablony pomocí HTML.Řešení bylo ověřeno na přibližně třech stovkách skutečných kampaní z celého světa. V naprosté většině případů je poskytnutý výsledek postačující pro identifikaci kampaně.

Mobile Text Messaging and Connectedness within Close Interpersonal Relationships

Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / Mobile telephones are impacting societies around the world and text messaging, short type-written messages sent via mobile phones, has also garnered international research efforts. Research demonstrates that text messages are being used primarily to commence, advance, maintain or otherwise impact interpersonal relationships. The present study probes relational benefits of text messaging within familial and fraternal contexts. Specifically, the study seeks to answer the research question: How does text messaging impact feelings of “connectedness” (IJsselsteijn, van Baren & van Lanen, 2003, p. 928) within “strong-tie” (Howard, et. al., 2006), dyadic relationships? Findings from nineteen respondent interviews show that texting becomes a channel through which dialectical tensions in relationships are played out. Respondents use texting to both assert autonomy and to maintain connectedness with relational partners. Several participants noted that financial issues were an important consideration but nevertheless subscribed to texting services. Users also perceived texting as more constant and more private than mobile voice interaction. Romantic pairs vis-à-vis non-romantic dyads perceived the benefits of text messages differently.

Syftet med studien är att undersöka marknadsföringskanalers attraktivitet i klädindustrin och se vilka kanaler som unga vuxna föredrar, samt vilka faktorer som kan utnyttjas inom dessa marknadsföringskanaler för att göra dem så tilltalande som möjligt till målgruppen. Undersökningen utgår från ett kundperspektiv och undersöker kanaltyperna sociala medier, digital direktmarknadsföring samt word of mouth. För att möjliggöra denna undersökning har vi valt att använda en deduktiv ansats med en kvantitativ metod i form av en enkät, där 67 svar från svenskar i åldrarna 15–25 samlades. Enkäten publicerades främst i Facebook grupper relaterade till studiens ämnen för att samla svar. Svaren har kodats och analyserats genom en univariat analys samt två bivariat analyser. Studien kommer fram till att den typ av marknadsföringskanal som tilltalar kunder mest inom klädindustrin är word of mouth. Därefter följer sociala medier, och sedan digital direktmarknadsföring. Ett ramverk presenteras för hur kanaltyperna kan kombineras samt användas av klädföretag för att göra marknadsföring inom dessa kanaltyper så framgångsrik och tilltalande som möjligt. / The purpose of the study is to investigate the attractiveness of marketing channels in the clothing industry and see which channels young adults prefer, as well as which factors can be used within these marketing channels to make them as appealing as possible to the target group. The survey takes a customer perspective and examines the channel types of social media, digital direct marketing, and word of mouth. We have chosen to use an deductive approach with a quantitative method in the form of a survey for this study, where 67 responses from Swedes aged 15-25 were collected. The survey was mainly published in Facebook groups related to the study's subjects to collect responses. The answers have been coded and analyzed through a univariate analysis and two bivariate analyses. The study concludes that the type of marketing channel that appeals to customers the most in the clothing industry is word of mouth. Next comes social media, and then digital direct marketing. A framework is presented for how the channel types can be combined and used by clothing companies to make marketing within these channel types as successful and appealing as possible.
