[en] GOLD RUSH: THE ROMANTICISM OF GILBERTO BRAGA / [pt] A CORRIDA DO OURO: O ROMANTISMO DE GILBERTO BRAGACLAUDIO FELICIO PIFANO SILVA 03 August 2010 (has links)
Celebridade (2003). / [en] Beyond the time limits that restrict the period between the late eighteenth
century to the mid-nineteenth century, Romanticism is a worldview that remains
in many cultural, political and social forms in a indirect or explicit way, but
always with a ambiguity sign that allows the understanding of the phenomenon
both as a rejection of the bourgeois society, and as a way to adjust to the capitalist
system through the scape from reality and individualism. Considering this
conflicted aspect of the romantic sensibility, the objective of this work is to
investigate its stay in mass culture, taking as its object the TV novel of Gilberto
Braga with an emphasis on money as an agent of the dissolution of values. The
work starts from the connections between the romantic phenomenon of
melodrama and the feuilleton in its original context, to think how is the recovery
of their traces in the peripheral modernity, highlighting how the novelist updates
the European patterns in dialogue with the José de Alencar’s writing
feuilletonistic models and also with other authors of radio novels and tv novels,
especially Janete Clair. As corpus for the analysis were selected the novels
Senhora (1975), Vale Tudo (1988) and Celebridade (2003).

Imagining multilingual spaces through scripted 'codeswitching' in multilingual performance: a case study of '7de Laan'Bhatch, Michael Shakib January 2010 (has links)
Magister Artium - MA / This thesis examines how multilingual spaces in South Africa are imagined and reconstructed through the use of scripted codeswitching in 7de Laan. It explores how the socio-political discourses and other ideologies from the broader South African context shape and influence the ways in which the soap reconstructs multilingual spaces and the identities that exist within these spaces through language and language practices. In the literature presented in this study I explore various theories and case studies that examine Afrikaans and its indexicality in our contemporary society, the conventions of soap opera in representing reality to society, the role of codeswitching in multilingual mass communication, the policies and ideologies that govern post apartheid television and finally the link between ideology, the media, language and imagined identities.. These five overarching themes often overlap throughout this thesis. My investigation of the main questions set in this thesis is based on a triangulated analysis of (a) a five episode transcript of the soap, (b) solicited viewer perceptions gleaned from questionnaires and (c) unsolicited social media commentaries. This analysis is framed by a poststructuralist critical analysis with a specific focus on how social practices and contemporary ideologies manifest in the discourse of the soap. This approach views discourse as the juncture where identity, stereotypes and power are negotiated, enforced, imagined and challenged. In this thesis I argue that the conspicuous absence of indigenous African languages and the use of standard white Afrikaans as the lingua franca in the soap creates an unrealistic utopian portrayal of the new South Africa that naturalises white Afrikaans culture and marginalises other indigenous cultures and languages. I argue that the soap puts middle class white Afrikaners at the epicentre of South African society thus enforcing the idea that non-whites still need to conform to white Afrikaans standards and norms at the expense of their own culture and languages despite the inception of democracy. The soap offers no depictions of resistance to this dominant white Afrikaans culture, thus misleadingly portraying it as the uncontested dominant culture of the new South Africa. / South Africa

Design and development of an on-line vending system for selling prepaid electricity via the InternetHearn, Gareth 07 March 2006 (has links)
The sale of prepaid electricity is prevalent in South Africa due to the current economic, social, and political conditions. The system currently used for the distribution of tokens for prepaid electricity, CVS, has a design flaw that leads to many security vulnerabilities. The design flaw is that the security devices that generate the tokens are distributed in the field and operate independently of centralised control. This was done because of the limited communication infrastructure in South Africa 10 years ago, but is no longer necessary. An improvement to the system is suggested that removes the security vulnerabilities by making the system on-line. By employing the communication infrastructure that is available today to provide access to the security devices, the security devices can be located in a secure environment. Changing the mode of operation to on-line also has other advantages such as simplifying auditing and removing synchronisation problems. This improved system works by communicating on-line with a centralised server and database for every transaction that a customer makes. By doing this, all of the parties involved are kept up to date with the most recent transactions. There can no longer be financial discrepancies and the risk of all parties involved is thus reduced. It is no longer meaningful to steal the vending machines because they no longer have the ability to generate tokens independently. In order to implement such a system, however, there are many security aspects that need to be addressed, such as the confidentiality of the information within the system and proving that a transaction did occur between two specific parties. To this end, cryptographic functions and protocols are selected that meet the requirements of the system. Public key cryptography was found to be a necessary ingredient in making the system work effectively and efficiently. In order to use public key cryptography in the new system, Public Key Infrastructure is required to manage public keys and provide authentication services. A suitable system is developed and described that employs certificate authorities and X.509 certificates. The procedures that are required from each party are listed. A set of messages that is required for the functions of the system is given. For each message, the contents of the message is given, the parts of the message that must be encrypted are defined and the parts of the message that must be digitally signed are given. Finally, the security of the individual parts of the system is critically analysed to show that all of the design goals have been achieved. Particular attention is given to the authentication of parties involved in the communication. The security of the system as a whole is also evaluated with respect to the X.810 security framework and it is shown that the system is robust from a security perspective. The result of the research is a system that meets the required functionality to replace the existing system, and at the same time meets all of the security requirements. It is shown that the proposed system does not have the security flaws of the existing system and thus is more effective in its purpose of vending prepaid electricity. / Dissertation (MEng (Electronic))--University of Pretoria, 2007. / Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering / unrestricted

Integrace programů do WCF webové služby / Integration of programs into WCF web serviceChladík, Jan January 2014 (has links)
This thesis deals with integration of separate .NET programs of photovoltaic power plant monitoring system. The main goal is integration of functions provided by programs into a single communication interface in the form of SOAP and REST compatible web service while minimizing cost. The integration is performed using a newly developed integration application that dynamically generates a web service using WCF technology. The thesis is divided into three main parts. The first part describes the current state of the photovoltaic power plant monitoring system, its problems and solution conditions. According to these problems and conditions is designed the target state of the system. The second part is divided into phases of the project according to the OpenUP methodology. Inception phase contains a selection of technologies and approaches that are used to achieve the target state of the system in compliance with solution conditions. Elaboration phase describes how to design and define the necessary tasks of development and implementation. In construction phase is described development and implementation of tasks of designed solution within integration application including object type serialization. Transition phase describes the individual tasks of editing existing programs to achieve integration. The last part of this thesis describes some possible directions for further development of the solution. The contribution of this thesis consists in the comprehensive elaboration of all main tasks of integration of programs.

A psychological enquiry into the processes that culminate in positive viewing experiences and subsequent audience loyalty to a soap operaDe Kock, Jani 05 August 2010 (has links)
The research was based on a secondary analysis of a qualitative market research study conducted for the SABC on the soap opera Isidingo. The data used in the study includes 10 focus groups, five diaries of loyal soap opera viewers who were asked not to watch Isidingo for a week and keep a record of their experience, a focus group conducted with these viewers after the completion of the deprivation exercise, the market researcher’s field notes, the market research report and the academic researcher’s own reflective diary. The analysis was conducted within a hermeneutic phenomenological interpretive framework. A model for the psychological processes that culminate in positive viewing experiences and audience loyalty to a soap opera is presented. The model illustrates how viewers use soap world knowledge and real world knowledge to interpret the characters and storylines of soap operas and that the degree of enjoyment the viewer experiences from viewing, is dependant on the quality of the mental models formed of these respective components. The role that transportation, realism, social influences and timeslot play in the engagement process is also defined. The study illustrates a hermeneutic phenomenological research pathway for qualitative research and demonstrates how market research can be explicated for academic gain. Quantifying Grain Boundary Atomic Structures Using the Smooth Overlap of Atomic PositionsPriedeman, Jonathan Lake 01 April 2018 (has links)
In this work, the relationship between grain boundary crystallography and grain boundary atomic structure is examined, using [1 0 0] - symmetric tilt grain boundaries in nickel. The structural unit model is used as a benchmark to evaluate the atomic structure description capacities of an emerging structural descriptor, the local environment representation, which itself is a refinement of the also-emergent Smooth Overlap of Atomic Positions (SOAP) descriptor. We show that the local environment representation encodes both the information of the structural unit model and additional information, such as distortion in the structural units and the arrangement of the structural units at the interface. The use of the local environment representation permits the use of a visualization tool known as SPRING to represent structural similarities between grain boundaries. With the SPRING representation, we produce objective evidence of a relationship between crystallography and atomic structure, at least for [1 0 0] - symmetric tilt grain boundaries.

Web Server for Protein Interaction Searching / Web Server for Protein Interaction SearchingHalfar, Martin January 2012 (has links)
