Civic Life-Styles in Dallas, Texas

Savage, Howard Allan 05 1900 (has links)
Abstract: The civic life-styles typology of Charles Adrian and Oliver Williams was tested as to its theoretical utility in explaining empirical patterns of civic life-style items, and its comparability to other forms of urban behavior. The data are from a 1970 survey of 3,025 families by the City of Dallas, Texas. An exploratory factor analysis was done on civic life-style items. The factor index scores were used as dependent variables, and demographic and associational items were independent variables in a step-wise regression analysis. Only two of ten factors were found to be civic lifestyles; both were interpretable using the Adrian and Williams typology. Civic life-style behavior was found to be similar to other patterns of differential participation in urban structures.

The social participation of children identified as having moderate learning difficulties/slow learning and the different ways of assessing such children in Kuwait and England (a comparative study)

Alqallaf, Bader January 2015 (has links)
This study addressed two main areas in the field of special education needs. First, it considered the concepts of MLD\Slow learning and the different ways to understand and recognise such terms in England and Kuwait. Second, it considered the stability of the social participation of children identified as having MLD\Slow learning in mainstream primary schools in both countries. The study utilized a cross-cultural design, which relies heavily on longitudinal and ethnographic approaches. In each country, two mainstream primary schools agreed to participate (i.e., four schools in total), comprising 22 children with MLD in England and 31 with slow learning in Kuwait. The results indicated that the concept of MLD was unclear to the participants, and that there was no procedurally objective way that could be followed to assess or recognise children with MLD in England. On one hand, this could lead to different assessment results for one child; on the other hand, it could also provide a flexible system through which MLD can be assessed in multiple ways. In contrast, slow learning in Kuwait is assessed objectively based solely on the IQ test as a main method, which could question the validity of the assessment. The results indicated that children with MLD in England were not found to be a homogenous group in terms of their social participation. Nonetheless, most of them displayed positive social participation with their typically developing children, as they were accepted to some extent by their peers and showed a good extent of friendship with their peers. Their social interactions were no different compared to that of their non-SEN peers. In contrast, the children with slow learning displayed no social interaction or friendship with their non-SEN peers who showed little acceptance of slow learning children. The results also indicated that the dimensions of friendship and peers’ acceptance levels were inter-related to some extent and could predict each other, albeit weakly with the dimension of social-self-concept.

An exploratory study on factors associated with participation in income generating community projects

Sithole, Thomson 10 April 2013 (has links)
M.A. (Social Sciences) / The engagement of local people in development projects has become a common phenomenon that development theorists and practitioners have emphasised for the past few decades. The debate was sparked by the realisation of the failure of the top-down approach to development which had serious consequences in project sustainability. Therefore, the bottom-up approach of community participation in development projects has been viewed as a panacea for sustainable projects at the grass roots level. The study is based on the understanding that community participation is central in community development, in order to ensure sustainability. It has been observed and acknowledged from the empirical evidence that, despite the acceptance of participation as workable alternative and useful approach to community development, there are many collapsed projects and blame has been shifted to lack of funding and other factors such as economic meltdown as the major setbacks. Today, concerns are raised on the ineffectiveness of community participation, which may lead to project failures. In many instances, local people have become recipients of pre-designed projects by outsiders and often the objects of administrative manipulation. This implies that development agents were determined to impose their own thinking and understanding of community participation on the community. As a result, development projects that local people were expected to take over in the implementation phase collapsed and such communities did not take responsibility for their failures. The question to be answered is whether community participation is the hallmark of project sustainability or just one of the processes that is necessary in development articulation. It is against this background that the study explored factors associated with participation in income generating community projects in Botlokwa community in Molemole Local Municipality, Limpopo province. The qualitative method was employed in this study.

This study aims to analyze the participation of family agriculture in the Rural Development Municipal Council of Cabrobó (CMDR) and their relationship to the local development of this municipality. For this, the theoretical-methodological perspective criticism in an attempt to demystify both the contradictions that pervade the democratic process and the social democratic control in CMDR to Cabrobó and the difficulties that permeate the process of participation by the family agriculture, taking into account the weaknesses, as well as the trends that can present in this Council. For the completion of the study, in addition to bibliographical and documentary research, field research was carried out by means of semi-structured interviews that had as purpose to identify the trends present in the daily life of participation of those social subjects, the characteristics of agricultural production, the means and ways of participation of family agriculture in CMDR of Cabrobó, taking into account the power relationships present in the same as well as associating – the local development perspective. The result made us realize that the emergence of the Council, as well as the participation of family agriculture in this instance has contributed to the strengthening of rural associations in view of civil society and the public authorities; to increase the number of partnerships for approval of projects for the rural area; as well as to the increase of investments of the benefits for family agriculture. Thus, we believe that the participation of agriculture in the municipality of CMDR Cabrobó contributes to local development of this municipality, since to the extent that this production segment participates in this instance, they also strengthen while category, the same happens to have more time and voice service to answer their demands, which contributes in a way to improve its agricultural production through the resources provided by the Government, enabling them to produce not only for subsistence, but also for marketing of their products in thus contributing to the local economy, as well as generate jobs and income, through trade shows, sales of products related to agriculture in the trades.

Introduction: People with leprosy experience situations of prejudice which, together with the stigma and discrimination, culminate in social isolation and the restriction of social relationships. Retratos, relatos e impressões de crianças moradoras da periferia de São Paulo por meio do fotovoz / Photos, narratives and impressions of children living in the periphery of São Paulo through photovoice

Larissa Bertagnoni 11 December 2017 (has links)
The group of children in vulnerable condition is the social group most exposed to constraints that make it difficult to know and belong to the city where they live. In this current context and guided by the sociological perspective of childhood, the objective of this research was to know and understand the perceptions of children living in complex conditions of vulnerability, living in the periphery, about their territory in the city of São Paulo, as well as to know the relations they establish with these spaces. It was a participatory research of collaborative character that used the methodological resource of the photovoice. Seven meetings were held with a group of five children between 08 and 10 years of age, without severe mental disorders, being followed up at a Child and Adolescent Psychosocial Care Center (CAPSij) due to the complex life situations and vulnerability to which they are subjected. It was proposed the collective circulation through spaces of meaning in the territory so that the children recorded in photography their daily perceptions of the space in which they live. In addition, a photographic exhibition was held open to the community from the individual selections of photographs and collective discussions about the experience, as well as individual feedback meetings with the children. The verbal and imaginary material underwent a thematic analysis in dialogue with the researcher\'s field diary. The results included the portraits of each participating child, the collective construction process of the research, the photographic material produced by the children from their views and the photographic exhibition titled \"Our World\". The photographic records addressed the following thematic categories: (1) Body: experimenting with oneself and forming a group, (2) CAPSij: revisiting a known space through photography, (3) Territory as place of desire and consumption, everyday paths and life histories at a physical and existential territory and (5) The subtleties amidst the concrete of the city: territory and nature. In a dialogue with the literature, theoretical reflections on the circulation of the collaborating children in their spaces of belonging were presented, organized in three ideas: (1) Existential territories: the body, places of life and circulation in the city, (2) Production of childhood cultures: the logics of consumption and the discovery of nature and (3) The photovoice as a methodological resource: protagonism and processes of social identification. Each participant in the study was able to contribute in an important way to the debate and analysis of the object of research and, consequently, to the process of reconstructing the understanding of childhood in society. The photovoice allowed the records of the significant experiences of children\'s lives, from their perspectives. The research revealed that children have a critical and complex view at their spaces of circulation and their relationships with the established ones. A view permeated by their singularities of life, attending to the beautiful and the subtlety of nature amid the gray concrete of the city, constantly dialoguing with mass cultures and hegemonic social values

Débora Navarro Rocha 27 October 2017 (has links)
This research was developed with the purpose of analyzing the meaning that the adolescents attribute to the strategies of health promotion and physical activity in the school and community environment. To do so, we conducted a qualitative, descriptive, exploratory study with adolescents of both sexes from the Federal Institute of Paraná, Campo Largo (PR). The first step consisted of the application of a questionnaire with open questions and the second by group discussions on \"physical activity in school and community\" and \"health in school and community\". Data analysis was carried out in a qualitative way, where the information obtained in the questionnaire and the discussions were analyzed using content analysis. The findings related to the analysis of the documentary material of the school physical education classes proposed by this research showed that the students mean that they attribute the meaning to health as a condition linked to their responsibilities, specifically derived from biological determinants such as eating habits and physical activity practices; however, the associations that perform between health and positive self-perceptions stand out. In order to promote health and physical activity, the students suggest that the school and the community have the role of encouraging them, they show disappointment in the absence of actions that make the school more dynamic, they are enthusiastic in identifying and explaining spaces and actions that are familiar and expect the development of health-related content through new methodologies, especially those related to the media

Desafios e perspectivas da participação social nos conselhos gestores de duas Unidades de Conservação na baixada santista do estado de São Paulo / Challenges and perspectives of the social participation in the managing councils of two protected areas, Baixada Santista, São Paulo

Felipe Augusto Zanusso Souza 02 October 2012 (has links)
The research objective was to analyze the determinants facts that contribute to the emergence of social learning processes and territorial dynamics changes in Protected Areas (PA). The scope of the study was defined in the Protected Area Management Councils and was based on the Xixová-Japuí State Park and Litoral Centro Marine Protected Area. Both PA are located in Santos Metropolitan Region, São Paulo, and inserted into a highly urbanized array with diverse interests and management challenges. Councils´ analysis identified the main characteristics of the arenas´ emergence processes and operation, verifying that both institutional design and skilled social actor´s presence assume critical importance on new institutions´ creation. The studys main conclusion indicates that clear rules establishment for the selection of civil society representatives and the adoption of technical process improve actors involvement in discussions and decision making for the protected areas management.

Äldres perspektiv på social delaktighet i ett digitaliserat samhälle : En litteraturöversikt / Elders perception of togetherness in a digitized society : A literature review

Lundström, Clara, Håkansson, Robin January 2020 (has links)
